[TUTORIAL][Tethering]+[Android Pay] How to have your Nougat, and eat it too! - Nexus 6 General

Obviously I'm not responsible for your mom exploding or your phone disowning you, but.....
I got tethering and Android Pay working on stock Nougat - that's Android N, folks - on a Nexus.
(confirmed will work on Marshmallow and up on 5, 5x, 6, 6p...etc.)
Thanks to @Chainfire, @ManHands and @interloper, and you!
click thanks if this helps, or buy me a beer or something.
prerequisites:
working adb and fastboot (from platform-tools in the Android SDK if you don't know where to find it)
twrp .img for your device
latest stable systemless supersu
1. be on Marshmallow or Nougat obviously
2. flash twrp
(volume down + power on nexus gets you into bootloader, then after flashing recovery, use volume buttons to scroll and power button to select recovery mode)
3. flash systemless root while booted into twrp (unsure if .supersu SYSTEMLESS=true in /data is still needed, but can't hurt - mine is still there from earlier.)
4. while still in twrp, go to mount and check system. Make sure you allow changes.
5. from your computer, do this
Code:
adb shell
echo "net.tethering.noprovisioning=true" >> /system/build.prop
6. reboot into Android.
7. Install Terminal Emulator from the Play Store.
8. Launch it, and in Terminal Emulator, do this
Code:
su
settings put global tether_dun_required 0
exit
9. go into Supersu, expert, scroll to the bottom and hit full unroot. No, you don't want it to patch you back to the stock boot image or recovery*. If it hangs, just reboot and try doing it again.
10. ????
11. Profit! You should have tethering unlocked, be unrooted, and have full Android Pay goodness working.
To take an OTA, do this, because Flashfire gets confused after you've done build.prop edits -
1. go to About Phone, scroll down. Find your build number.
2. download that Nexus Factory Image.
3. Unzip it all. ALL OF IT.
4. Make sure you have Android SDK & platform-tools (or just a working Fastboot and ADB)
5. just flash boot, system, and recovery - you can now OTA with no problems. Then repeat the above guide on your new OTA. Confirmed working 10 minutes ago, OTA'ing from Marshmallow to Nougat and then getting tethering working again
ALTERNATE IF YOU PREFER FLASHFIRE:
All the above steps, but you only have to flash the System image to fix the build.prop hash fail then flashfire should work for you. Wouldn't necessarily recommend upgrading version numbers (6.0.1 to 7.0.0) with Flashfire, but who knows, it might work great! Chainfire is a wizard.
*you can do this if you want, but when I let it patch my boot image I got the dreaded "device corrupt!!!!1" message at boot. Did not try letting it flash stock recovery image.

You're mentioning to do a systemless root but enable read/write on the system partition. Isnt't that counter-intuitive?

Nope! rw system is only for the build.prop echo, other than that you don't touch /system

Have you been able to get this to work with the latest factory Nougat images from Google's website?
I successfully did your process above when I was on an older version of Nougat for Nexus 6 (beta release), but when I try now with NBD90Z Google Pay won't work after rooting after a full unroot.

Yes i'm seeing this also and other not root methods for tethering don't not seem to work either with NBD90Z .

Hmm. Bummer. For a split second, I felt like I finally had a fully functioning Android
Almost regret upgrading to NBD90Z, but figured it would be less buggy. If anyone has figured out how to get AP and NBD90Z to work with a slightly modified build.prop file (to allow tethering), please update this thread!

Flashed back down to NRD90S and the method works again.

Where did you download that version?
The stock Nexus 6 images on the official Google site do not list that version as valid for the Nexus 6.
Are you using the Nexus 6P image?

May be a dumb question but I have a Moto X Pure running Ressurection Remix nougat ROM and I don't have WiFi tethering in my settings. Would this method work on it?

worked, thanks

With the current build, no methods work. SafetyNet check fails with the last 2 builds

Safety net now requires OEM lock, even fully stock with open bootloader never rooted fails

Ok great! Well at least I know I'm not missing some clever workaround. Isn't there a way to bypass SafetyNet and/or OEM lock? I thought someone was trying or working on something like this...

So I read that the March 2017 7.1.1 Update for Nexus 6 broke Android Pay even on non-rooted devices so Google released images with SafetyNet disabled. Would that version allow us to root AND use Android Pay since SafetyNet is disabled to make it work for regular users?

Had to do this but gaining root was going to be tricky (encrypted partition), and I didn't need root for any other reason. I unlocked the bootloaded, flashed twrp, and used adb to pull build.prop, added the line in (net.tethering.noprovisioning=true), pushed it back using adb (with twrp still running), and rebooted. Tethering is working fine now.
By the way -- this is so infuriating. When tethering does not work it asks your provider's permission even in airplane mode (which fails, it's airplane mode), so you can't use the phone to provide wifi to other devices. Such an amateurish disrespect for my rights as an owner of an unlocked device.

I flashed Vanilla rom 7.1.2, then flash stock recovery and locked bootloader and Android pay, Netflix and Snapchat etc all work. After I flashed Vanilla rom Android pay wasn't working stating I had a root, so I locked bootloader but was bootlooping into twrp. After flashing stock recovery it worked just fine

I discovered that you can you can have TWRP recovery and still use android pay so long as you have your bootloader locked. I am pretty sure you can still flash roms w/ locked bootloader in recovery but I am not positive

Updating To MM from LP (Moto X Pure)

So I wanted to create a thread dedicated to performing this function. I know as someone who does this quite often, I like to have all my ducks in a row to ensure everything works perfectly. I'm not big on fragging my phone and then frantically trying to find a way to undo all the chaos. I do a lot of research and ask a lot of questions before doing anything.
On that note I would like to first thank all the amazing people on here, whether they be developers or just experienced Tech Guru's, everyone is always a big help. I take absolutely no credit for any of the awesomeness that can be found on XDA, I'm just creating a thread that I hope will help folks find everything in one place for this function. So here we go, I'm going to explain the way I did it, which is the way I have been doing stuff like this for years. I have a preferred method as it has always resulted in perfect flashes and no bricks, not even soft bricks. So I feel it works pretty well.
Just so it is understood, this is for the Moto X Pure, which has been bootloader unlocked and has TWRP and root installed. Also it should be noted that you need to have Developer Options enabled and USB Debugging enabled. You should also be familiar with the ADB process, to some extent, maybe you have at least heard of it.
Steps to follow:
1. Use Titanium Backup and backup all your User Apps, NOT SYSTEM APP's, system apps will not restore across updates and will most often corrupt your new install.
2. Make a Nandroid backup using TWRP, I backed up system, boot, data, and EFS, but I don't think EFS is necessary.
3. Make sure you have the Motorola Drivers installed, get them from here http://www.motorola.com/getmdmwin
4. Get Shawn5162's Restore to Stock Tool, I know others have said it's not necessary to perform a complete restore, but this is part of my process that I have always done, and it's always worked. Get it here by using one of the mirror's created by patt2k in post 6, and don't forget to thank him for the mirrors http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-style/development/windows-tool-moto-x-style-pure-edition-t3199905
5. Unzip Shawn5162's zip to a folder on your desktop, and before you move onto the next step, make sure you have backed up everything valuable on your phone, such as pictures, messages, etc..., because everything is going to be erased in the next step, except for the stuff on your MicroSD. I'm so anal, I even remove the MicroSD before flashing. Connect your phone to your computer using a USB and make sure you have USB debugging enabled under Developer Options.
6. Inside the folder you created run the FLASH-ALL.bat, which will reboot your device to the bootloader and begin the restore to stock flash. This will remove root and TWRP, but will not remove the fact you have an unlocked bootloader. Your phone will reboot when complete and should boot back into your system within a short period of time.
7. Once you are rebooted, you may need to do a little setup before you get the message that a System Update is available. DO NOT waste your time installing any apps, wait until you have full root on MM before doing any of that. Once the Update message appears, accept it and download the MM update file, then install it once it is finished downloading and asks if you want to install.
8. The update takes about 20 - 25 minutes so be patient. Once complete your phone will once again boot back to system, now you have MM in it's complete unrooted greatness.
9. Now go into settings, about phone, and tap on build number a bunch of times to enable Developer Options. Then go into developer options and enable USB Debugging.
10. Next download a bunch of stuff from the following links, if you desire to install TWRP and regain root.
TWRP 2.8.7.1 here https://dl.twrp.me/clark/twrp-2.8.7.1-clark.img
Modified Boot Image from here, required to perform systemless root , not sure about the Cowboy hat dude, but click on him, it will download the file.
SuperSU 2.52 from here https://download.chainfire.eu/743/SuperSU/BETA-SuperSU-v2.52.zip?retrieve_file=1
11. Next copy the modified boot file and SuperSU file directly to your internal or external SD on your phone, either works fine, although I prefer my External SD.
12. Next copy the TWRP file you downloaded into the same folder you made for Shawn5162's files. This folder has all the adb and fastboot files you need to perform the TWRP flash. Now hold shift and right click and choose open a command window here. Then ensure your device is detected by running the command adb devices, it should show your phones S/N and the word device. If it doesn't, you may need to look at your phone and respond to the prompt about allowing your computer to have access to adb. Try the command again after that. Then run the command adb reboot bootloader, which should reboot your phone to bootloader fastboot mode.
13. Once it fastboot mode run fastboot devices just to make sure your device is still detected, then run the command fastboot flash recovery twrp-2.8.7.1-clark.img. That will flash TWRP to your recovery partition. Then type the command fastboot reboot twrp-2.8.7.1-clark.img or use the volume rocker to toggle to recovery then select the power key to boot to it. Make sure you choose the slider at the bottom to allow modification. Once on the main screen you can choose reboot and then select recovery. This makes sure that you have booted to TWRP at least once, and ensures by rebooting to it, you can get back to it.
14. Now perform a Nandroid Backup, using the TWRP Backup option, of your completely stock MM system, data, boot, and EFS partitions. Enable compression if you like and store it to your External SD if you have one. This allows you to have an unrooted backup on your SD, which is good for future updates. After the Nandroid is complete now flash the modified boot image zip using the TWRP Install feature, and when it's complete, then flash the SuperSU zip file. After I always perform the option to erase Dalvik and Cache, I just think it is a good thing to do, it's probably placebo, but I do it anyhow.
15. Go back to TWRP Home and choose reboot and select system. Your device will reboot and you now have a fully updated and rooted Moto X Pure on MM.
Thanks go out to all the folks who have contributed to the many threads that contain this information. Special thanks to Shawn5162, DaMadOne, Chainfire, and Hashbang173 for their awesomeness. Hope this helps folks that are concerned about performing these procedures. I can say that it worked perfectly for me with no issues at all, but of course I take no responsibility if it doesn't work for you and causes your device to fail. Again these are similar steps I have taken in the past with other devices and I have never had a single brick, so hopefully it works for others as well.
Enjoy!!
I have a Moto X Pure as described with the bootloader unlocked and rooted. The popup message to upgrade to MM comes up constantly now - what happens if you just let it try to update?
I think I am in way over my head. I am receiving my phone Friday and was looking to unlock to root but from the looks of it, I will not be able to do that.
I've never unlocked & rooted a phone before. So all that looks like the bible to an uneducated man "me".

Yeah, if you rooted already, you must reflash the original boot.img. Then update, and then restore your root. Read here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...t-moto-x-style-xt1572-br-marshmallow-t3259380
At the bottom of the post, you get the original file you need and it is mentioned here:
And enjoy!
Now you have a rooted MotoX Style Marshmallow. To apply any OTAs, you only need reflash stock boot.
K?
Why would you want to update without a wipe? You must like sluggish performance

So the last three posts complain of no wifi yet people keep using this method?
The modified boot zip breaks the wifi. You can root by flashing superSU 2.62, I think, or any SuperSU zip that is specifically systemless.

The partition always fails. Just ignore it. You should be able to downgrade the bootloader. I have been able to so I don't know why you would be having issues with that unless your bootloader is locked/re-locked.

** DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT A DEVELOPER. I DO THIS AS A HOBBY AND SHARE MY FINDINGS IN CASE SOMEONE ELSE FINDS THEM USEFUL. **
** THIS WORKED ON MY DEVICE BUT IT MAY NOT WORK ON YOURS. APPLY AT YOUR OWN RISK **** The following are instruction for installing Android N Preview image released by Google on 3/9/2016. After the installation you will have TWRP recovery 3.0.0-1 and the data partition will be erased and unencrypted if you use method 2, which means you will have ~ 3GB more space and ~ 10 seconds faster boot speed **Always backup your data before flashing something a total stranger gives you!
Method 1: Flash update through TWRP recovery
1- You need to have TWRP installed on your phone.
2- Download this flashable zip.
3- Copy to the phone internal storage and flash via recovery.
4- Reboot. Your data should still be intact and your OS is upgraded to N. If your internal storage is unencrypted before flashing it remains unencrypted. Your TWRP is also upgraded to 3.0.0-1.
Method 2: Flash update using a computer
1- ALL of your data including the internal storage will be lost so make a backup. (If you know what you are doing and you are coming from unencrypted Marshmallow you can modify the instructions to not lose data but I won't help you with that).
2- Download this file. Note that it is NOT a flashable zip.
3- Unzip into a folder of your choice on your PC.
4- Open a command window (cmd) and cd to this directory. then run the following:
Code:
flash-all
5- Wait until prompted, then press key to reboot the phone.
6- Your data is wiped and your OS is upgraded to N with unencrypted internal storage. Your TWRP is also upgraded to 3.0.0-1.
Technical details: this is a repacking of the Google image with a modified Kernel and removed userdata and recovery images. Everything else is stock.

About root
To obtain root after installing this update you should flash SuperSU 2.70 (or higher) in recovery. Get it from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/wip-android-n-preview-t3335726. Note that at least at the moment (as of SuperSU 2.70) the root method is a hack solution which requires a lot of further refinement. Many programs are still unable to acquire root and mount the system partition for R/W. However, it is possible to install the android terminal emulator, do an su, mount /system as rw, and do all the modifications within the terminal emulator. Of course you can always use TWRP to modify the system, for which you don't even need to root the device.
Hot dog! First for once... Thanks!

will this wipe internal storage ? or only data partition?
For anyone interested...
I enrolled in the Developer Beta program and the OTA worked for me even though I was rooted with SuperSU v2.68.
However, despite installing TWRP 3.0.1 and then SuperSU v2.68 again, root doesn't stick. Fortunately the only critical previously-root-only app I want is a firewall, and Netguard doesn't need root. I can live for a while without Double Tap To Wake, Wakelock detector, Quick Reboot, etc. And the only app that seems to crash is BBC Radio Player, though BBC News and iPlayer still seem ok (warning about libraries, but still plays). And Battery Bot Pro seems to have lost its status bar display...
So it does pretty much what the warnings say - it's stable but not everything will work.

if you only flash the boot.img and system.img, then yes. if you flash the whole thing, which includes a stock recovery, itll install the stock recovery. but all you have to do is type in one line into fastboot to reflash twrp.
It would be nice moving forward if Google just made SuperSU/root part of their factory image under developer options. So once you enable developer option, there's a little toggle next to OEM unlock that says "root/SuperSU".
Would make life much easier.

The zip doesn't include stock recovery so if you flash everything according to the instructions you will have twrp at the first reboot.

[marmite] Android 7.1.1 TOS118C fastboot/recovery images

For those that didn't receive the update yet, I've requested the links to the Wileyfox nougat support team, so here you can download the incremental, recovery and fastboot images of the latest upgrade TOS118C.
RECOVERY IMAGE (2GB) (works neat in TWRP as well as in Cyanogen Recovery / does not necessarily require open bootloader)
FASTBOOT IMAGE (2GB) (requires open bootloader)
INCREMENTAL UPDATE (OFFICIAL) (DRIVE MIRROR LINK by me) (from TOS089A to TOS118C / from decf3a575d to aa4d5d86bc)
In the post below you can have some information on how to grab OTA links from the WileyFox BSP server. Have fun, and don't forget to debloat your system
How to grab the official OTA from BSP's server
In the OP, I left a link to the official incremental update right from the OTA server (which I'll talk about a bit later). If you directly click it, it will return an Error 404, but that is not true since the file actually exists... But requires a special HTTP header to be visible.
Since I wanted to grab the OTA link now that, for once, I finally got an OTA in this phone after always upgrading through fastboot images, I used wireshark to determine the server where it fetches it and the full file route. It turns out the header sends a special UA string as you can see in the picture attached: rsotaua 1.0, which is, most probably, a randomly generated string.
Now here's the thing: if you want to switch the UA you'll need an extension to do so. I've used this one. As soon as it's installed, go to the Options of the extension and add it like here:
Code:
WILEYFOX rsotaua 1.0 Chrome Replace WF
Once the string is inserted, switch to it and hit the URL. The OTA should be downloadable now.
... Or you can just wait til someone mirrors it, like I already did
Lastly, as a side note, I'd also like to comment the following, regarding BSP:
Wileyfox's devices software is now in charge of this company, called BSP.ninja and that clearly defines themselves as a company to "launch an Android device without knowing where to start". It's said to be formed by former Cyanogen employees, or, at least Ricardo Cerqueira @aremcee (which btw, is also in charge of the Open Source code available in BitBucket for the Wileyfox devices), since he's the owner of the domain. In any case, what I want to say is that the code is being done quite possibly by the very same people that did the job at the now dead Cyanogen, so it shouldn't be a reason to worry. Also, it'd be awesome if the team released a working device tree so that the community could bring custom ROMs just like you (the team) used to do.

Correct. I'm preparing a new version of my debloater tool, and I'll briefly explain in it's thread how to move from TOS089A to TOS118C without losing anything in rooted and/or debloated devices. Stay tuned!
Well....I must say, that every "update" from Wileyfox shows me that it's the worst phone to update I've ever owned.
I can't proceed any update (OTA of course not, recovery via TWRP) on my rooted + some skin parts changed via substratum Swift 2 without wiping everything.

I also skin my phone through substratum (the default orange theme is disgusting), I use magisk and plenty of other tools both systemless or even require modifying the system partition (like Wileyfox debloater), and, using the instructions I wrote in this post here I've found no single problem upgrading my device from a debloated, rooted and themed TOS089A to TOS118C to then debloat, root and theme it again. It's true you will need to install your substratum themes again, but the rest should work perfect.
I've tried the recovery update on my Swift 2X but can't get it to boot. I have TWRP installed (3.1.0-0) and it's rooted via SuperSU. Do I have to unroot first?
Edit for more info: I did the OTA upgrade from the stock CyanogenOS ROM to 7.1.1 TOS089A. Then I installed TWRP and flashed SuperSU. The OTA to TOS118C predictably doesn't work. Flashing the recovery image via TWRP seems to go fine but I'm stuck at the white "Wileyfox powered by Android" screen. Tried wiping Cache/Dalvik but no dice.
Edit 2: flashing Magisk afterwards seems to make it work.
I try to install the ZIP via TWRP and after the process ends the phone reboots but it remains stuck at the "WileyFox" white screen.
EDIT: I tried the fastboot one and it worked. Sometimes is hard to understand our devices
I'm guessing it's some kind of dm-verity issue? Flashing in TWRP worked for me when I flashed Magisk 12.0 afterwards, which seems to take care of dm-verity. Linuxct suggested installing Magisk in his debloat thread and I thought "what's the harm". Now I'm a happy camper.
Yes indeed, it appears a dm-verity issue message. Actually, I managed to install 7.1 from fastboot, but then this flash restores the original recovery. If I try to install again TWRP it stuck again on the WileyFox white screen. I'll try installing Magisk.
Edit: flashed Magisk, all works. Awesome.

Thank You so much
Installed it via fastboot and now iam stuck in a bootloop :S
EDIT: Did a factory reset in recovery! Works now.
Swift 2 Plus on 13.1.5 Cyanogen. Which method is best to install Android 7.1.1 TOS118C manually. The phone is stock, not rooted. Thanks

Awesome.

If you use the
Code:
adb reboot "dm-verity enforcing"
can you remove the dm-verity menu on boot or do you need it left as after bootloader unlocked?
TOS373J?
Anyone have the images for the latest update?

what is your current firmware version?

Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet 10.1" BNTV650, working!

Just picked one of these up last week, and it has no restrictions on unlocking the bootloader. Boots AOSP 8.1 Phh-Treble almost perfectly. The boot animation was missing, but the wifi, bluetooth, and camera all seem to work just fine.
It doesn't seem to boot AOSP 9, though. Something about keymaster version mismatches, it seems like.

Make sure that Your kernel is using same security patch date as GSI. I think Phh GSI is supposed to adjust itself to any security patch but if it's not happening then open system.img (Phh Pie) and check security patch. Then use Android Image Kitchen (AIK) to unpack stock boot image and go to.. I literally forgot the name of that folder lol.. there should be 2 folders, ramdisk and something else. So open that "something else" folder then edit oslevel and change security patch to the one that's in Phh Pie.
Now flash image-new.img and system.img and Phh Pie should boot now :fingers-crossed:.
whats the default os version on these puppies ?
Could someone post steps to unlock/root? I've not used a custom ROM since KitKat. The default B&N software is trash.

I unlocked the boot loader of the Nook Tablet 10.1”, I installed Project Treble 8.1.0 and Project Treble 9.0, they both had WiFi connection problems.
I installed the most recent version of PHH's Pi GSI and it works flawlessly, even boots up quire quickly after the initial flash. To my knowledge everything works, boot animation, bluetooth, wifi, all of it. Very simple process, just unlock bootloader, get the GSI, flash, and go. Painless, simple, and flawless thus far.
I'm a huge noob to flashing and the thought of bricking scares me, but I'm trying to setup a guide I just don't have the gal to actually test it. I want to backup everything, rom and recovery included and be able to put everything back to stock I just don't know if TWRP works with it. If this is wrong, someone please correct me and I'll edit this post.
1. open developer options via tapping build in about tablet until it opens. Enable usb debugging and oem unlock.
2. install 15 second adb onto your pc, plug your tablet in via usb and with it off, hold volume up and power to go into recovery. select "reboot into bootloader". you'll see "fastboot enabled" on the bottom left of the screen. In a command prompt run "fastboot devices" to make sure its there (you should see a string of numbers popup) then run "fastboot oem unlock". on the tablet you'll see a "do you want to unlock your bootloader?" press volume up for yes. then "fastboot reboot" to go back to your tablet.
3. google for "frama root" and put it on the root of your sdcard. Use the boromir or whichever until root is successful. (you'll probably have to reboot)
4. (the part I'm not sure will work) install twrp manager from the play store and backup everything to your sdcard. partitions, etc.
5. get a gsi image, put it on your SD card, boot into twrp and flash.
To go back to stock
restore your twrp backup, run frama root to unroot your tablet, use adb and fastboot to run "fastboot oem lock" to lock the bootloader and uncheck the stuff in dev options .
I picked up one of these things a few months ago. I'm thinking about unlocking the bootloader, rooting it, etc. I did some work on previous Android versions (think KitKat), but 8.x is pretty new to me.
Regarding TWRP -- someone needs to actually port it for this device. At least that is how it worked prior to 8.x. I haven't seen one for the BNTV650 so far. Looks like the "Flash GSI without TWRP" steps apply.

Which one? AOSP 9 I presume, but can you confirm? I'm getting one of these babies and the first thing I will do is to try to install a good, alternate ROM on it (I never use the manufacturer's ROM if I can avoid it).

Fire TV 3 (needle/stark): TWRP

Disclaimer: If you go through with this and encounter issues, I (or the others here) will try to help you, but the risk is all yours.
I see a few posts mentioning TWRP for the AFTV3, so here it is for the pendant (needle): link. Extract twrp.img from the archive, copy it to /sdcard, and flash as follows:
Code:
adb shell
su
dd if=/sdcard/twrp.img of=/dev/block/recovery
Note: You will need a Y (OTG) cable to connect a mouse and/or a keyboard.
I have tested this on the pendant (needle), but it should also work for the cube (stark).
You can also boot or flash this from fastboot (reboot bootloader or run from aml_reboot in the root thread) if you so desire.
To enter recovery from a terminal running on the AFTV3:
Code:
reboot recovery
To enter recovery from ADB:
Code:
adb reboot recovery
For those interested, here's what I did:
-- Rather than build from scratch, I used an existing TWRP for Amlogic's S905X as the base. Quite a few of them are here.
-- You can't just use a random TWRP and expect it to work on the AFTV3 (due to hardware and partition mismatch). I first replaced (and repacked) the ramdisk with that from needle's boot image (using magiskboot).
-- While TWRP booted up, USB OTG was absent. Without OTG, TWRP is not of much use (w/o OTG, I used openrecoveryscript as a workaround). Turns out the random TWRP images lack the correct USB modules. I extracted the correct modules from the AFTV3, copied them to the TWRP image, and everything works.
If something doesn't work, please post here.
Great job, i flashed it from fastboot.
adb reboot bootloader (or install a app that will reboot into bootloader)
fastboot flash recovery C:\(this TWRP version)
Seems to be functional.
the old Firestick 1's you could control the mouse from a adb shell. I dont know how to make that functional for those without a OTG.
Confirmed, it works on the cube (stark) as well...
That's really a great job. As stated here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=78958467&postcount=165 I (hopefully soft) bricked my pendant trying to install Google services. Now it just reboot at the white amazon logo. Ordered a OTG cable to test TWRP but was trying random versions. Now this confirmed woirking version is a life saver to me. Now I just have to find a way to remove the offending google service apk.
Thanks again.
Sorry to bother again.
I still have my pendant in bootloop (bad google service installation).
Tried OTG cable but using it doesnt let me go in fastboot mode and I dont know how to navigate in recovery without it.
Since now the pendant is rooted and can recover OTA files maybe my next attempt could be to try to find a .bin rom file and flash it using fastboot?
If so does anyone know if there is such a file yet (pre rooted version should be great)?
Thanks.
Does anyone know where to get the updated firetv3 roms? with TWRP now i would like to attempt updates.

None available yet, but there are a couple of methods by which we may obtain them.
The first one has some risk involved. you would have to re-enable OTA updates and allow the device the check for and download the current version
and then again disable the OTA update apps. Then pull a copy of the update from the device before clearing the cache.
I have noticed that as long as the device is busy, say running a sideloaded app, it will not initiate a downloaded update.
The second is dependent upon if the individual will help us. There is a member on this forum who has modified the DeviceSoftwareOTA.apk for OS 5
that allowed update check and download to stay enabled because the installation procedure was removed from the APK. So you could simply pull the
update from the cache at any time. I will pull a copy from OS 6 and post it today and see if he would be willing to assist.
I'm with you, I'd like to update mine as well after seeing some of the changes that have been posted.

No, TWRP would be over written by an OTA update.

you sure about that? i just screwed up and was rooting my "tanks" and forgot to update one. Then i took the update, it ran the amazon update though open recovery TWRP and updated. Booted without issues, i know its a firestick2, but almost thinking i should test on a pendant...

There is a difference between writing outside of TWRP and with TWRP, it's hard to overwrite something that's doing the writing.
If you read in the first post of the tank rooting thread, the author explicitly states: "Only ever flash boot/recovery images using TWRP",
anything outside of that will not be root aware. Better to be safe, than sorry.
How may I get the "su". It said, I don't have permision.

Open Magisk Manager, Select the Menu in the top left corner.
In the sidebar navigate to "Superuser", you should see "com.android.shell".
Toggle the switch to right to enable it.

I assumed you were already rooted. Since you are not, start here:
[ROOT] Rooting the FireTV Cube and Pendant with FireFU
Anything from firmware 6.2.5.8 and up, the exploit has been patched.
This is the most complicated root method I have ever seen. Mine is 6.2.8. too bad.

This isn't the root thread. But yeah, it's the only thing we've got for these devices, so we make it work
Hi,
I was able to recover my Pendant using a finally working OTG cable and using mouse with your TWRP and finally delete the offending google.gsm app so thanks a lot for that.
The only thing I noticed is that adb doesn't work for me once booted into TWRP (I wanted to use adb backup to backup bigger partitions directly to my PC). Is that just my issue or it's happening for everyone?
Thanks.
Pino.
moving it to the right place.
anyone have interest in the update files? If i turn on my update, download the update, but before rebooting copy the .bin file to a different folder, delete from the cache folder then disable updates again. I can share the file if anyone wants it to see if we can modify to keep root and update? I am thinking i might download it, move it and change it to a .zip, then reboot into TWRP. Flash the update and flash magisk before a reboot. Anyone have thoughts about risk of a BRICK?
