Private mode?? - AT&T Note 7 Questions & Answers

Love the phone so far, but the main thing i miss is the toggle for "private mode" from my S7 that would take select apps, photo albums, etc and make them invisible until you turn Private Mode off with your pin or fingerprint. Now its under lockscreen and security with a "secure folder" option to put all those things in. It's a little user un-friendly, and i liked better just having the toggle where the selected items simply disappear/reappear. Is the Private Mode setting still there and i can't find it or is it just gone altogether?

Secure folder can be placed as a app on home screen so I can do it like that
Cracked out N7

Yeah I kinda get that, but it sucks if you're trying to add a pic or something to an email, an app, etc, and you can't just "toggle on" your private stuff to have access. I have to go to the secure folder, remove those items, then reopen what you're using, add the pics or links or whatever, then exit out, find those pics again and move them back to the secure folder. It's too many steps to me.

I agree. I could bookmark the private folder with solid explorer and access directly for file maintenance. Hopefully it comes back in a future update.
edit: after playing with the feature some more I think it's closer to a virtual machine than an actual "secure folder". Overkill for my needs.

I do miss PRIVATE MODE of "Note 4". In this Private Mode, just turn it on, I can put whatever I want in the "kind of private folder" (this folder can even be accessed from the PC when my Note 4 connected to PC with Private Mode ON).
Now, "Secure Folder" much much more restricted.

For pattern lock: Settings > Location & Security > Security Lock
From there you can do a passcode or the pattern. I personally use pattern because it can replace the slide to unlock all together while keeping it secure.
I got the pattern lock....but what about adding a note or your personal contact information, thats whats missing...thanks
If there is a way, I haven't found it. I know you can do it on rooted devices, depending on how the rom is set up, but as far as the droid x, I haven't seen a way to do it. You can download an app from the market that will call your phone if you lose it. Also there are apps that will find your phone on GPS. I know this isn't really what your wanting to do, but it will help you if it gets lost.
after many hours on the net I found the answer. you get this by installing the antivirus program from the apps market. you change the "this phone belongs to:" by going to the antivirus program and pressing the menu button form there go to settings, then remote management and finely lost message. you can change the whole message

That's just specific to that app. There is no way on the stock rom to set this information you are looking for. Just add a contact called Me to your contact list. That way if you lose the phone, somebody may call you (If they don't keep the phone)

Too much work for something too small I think.
One way is to update your wallpaper image to have the text you want (using your favorite image editor). Of course then it'll show on the normal home/launcher as well. But a short "Belongs to John Doe, (555) 555-5555" towards the bottom-center should work.
just found WidgetLocker Lockscreen. I havent tried it yet but I guess you can put widgets on the lock screens so I can put a note there with all this information...worth a try

How to use and functions:
The first step: selecting apps
Various apps will greatly enrich your cell phone, so firstly let’s select the apps to your taste. Use the Android Market and download what you would like. If you are using a backup app and restoring apps from a previous ROM, only restore the apps and not the data. Otherwise that will create a lot of force close issues.
How to copy files from the computer to the phone? First connect your phone to your computer via data cable, pull down the notification panel from the top of the phone, click “USB connected”, and then click "Turn on USB storage”.
After copying, do not forget to select the option of “Turn off USB storage”, otherwise "File Manager” in the phone will not be able to find the sd card, as it is being occupied by the computer.
Now I have a lot of apps, how to put them in order?
All apps successfully installed are listed on the desktop, however, they may not be in the order you want, how to put them in order?
Long press an app icon and then you may move it freely. When it is moved to the screen border, the screen will automatically switch to the next screen.
How to add a screen? Use two fingers to pinch on the desktop to enter screen thumbnail mode. Then you may add or delete screens.
How to delete an app? Long press the app icon you want to delete, drag it on top of the trash box and click OK to delete it.
The second step: let's make your phone different.
A phone without style is nothing remarkable, so let’s make your phone different!
Changing wallpaper: Click Menu button on the desktop, select “Change Wallpaper” to replace the wallpaper. In addition to the existing wallpaper in the phone, thousands of pieces of wallpaper are also available online.
Changing theme: Themes make great changes to your interface style. Click “Theme Manager” on the desktop to select the theme you like. Also, more online themes are available online.
Selecting ringtones and more: click “Settings” on the desktop to set call and notification ringtones. In “Personalization” under “Personal” tab, you may find more options.
The third step: it’s time for some advanced techniques!
Adding widgets on the desktop: press the Menu button on the desktop, select "Edit Mode", and then click the icon on the upper right corner to access the interface of “Add Widgets”. Choose your favorite widget on the top, and then drag it to the screen below.
Using folders to manage desktop apps: in the interface of “Add Widgets”, drag [Folder] to the desktop. You may drag multiple apps into folders to classify them. After opening the folder, you may click the edit icon in the upper left corner to rename the folder.
Using toggles panel to improve efficiency: drag the notification panel down from the top, click "Toggles" to go to the toggles panel (It goes to the toggles panel in default of notice.) On the panel are listed the most commonly used toggles, you may click to quickly enable or disable a toggle. Long press on the icon will launch the settings for that icon.
Guest mode: enable the “Guest Mode” toggle in the panel, and your calls and text messages logs will be hidden, and all installed applications cannot be removed. You may have a try when you need to show your phone to guests or children.
Importing contacts or binding accounts: you may use some apps to import a batch of contacts, or bind Google account directly in "Settings"> "Personal"> "Accounts & Sync Settings" to sync contacts at any time.
How to print screens? Press "Menu" key and "Volume Down" key at the same time to print a screen. The printed image is saved in the directory of MIUI in the SD card.
How to copy files from the computer without using the data cable? In case of a Wi-Fi connection, enter “File Manager” on the desktop, select the tab of "Remote Administration" to start the service, and then you will get an address. Enter the given address on the computer, then you may copy files without using a data cable!
Tips/Tricks [updated 2/24] - New tips are at the bottom of this post!
1. Long press on the icon in Toggles to launch the settings for that icon.

2. Built-in Screen Capture function
One of the lacking feature in Android is the lack of a built-in screen capture feature (like in iPhone). Not anymore. With MIUI, you can press the “Menu” key and “Volume Down” key at the same time to capture a screenshot. The printed image is saved in the “MIUI: directory in the sd card.
3. Press Home key to preview screens
Pressing the Home button once will bring you back to the Home screen. Pressing the Home button button will show you all the screen thumbnails. You can also ad/remove screens from here.

Note: System processes will not be cleared so as to ensure the normal running of the system.
11. Switch the Battery UI to show percentage
The default battery UI can be switched to display percentage of left battery capacity. To do so, go to “Settings -> System -> Battery Settings -> Battery Indicator Style -> Percentage“.
12. Long press on the Home button to show History
Like any other Android ROM, long press on the Home button will show the recently used apps. However, in MIUI, there is also an App Killer and App Manager button. Swiping the popup left will show the search form.
13. Setting up IP dialing
If you need to add an IP prefix for a particular number in a strange land, you can set it in Settings -> Common -> Calls Settings. Turn the “Auto IP dialing” ON and set the IP prefix and current area code.
14. Send SMS for rejected calls
When you are not available to answer the phone, you may slide up the panel to reject the call and to send a message to the caller at the same time.
15. Enable 720P to record a video

18. Important SMS: As for those important messages you want to add to your favorites, you may long press the message in the pop-up menu and select "Favorites". You may switch to "Favorites" tab in the main SMS interface to view collected messages.
19. Quick Delete SMS: You may slide from left to right on the item and click on the red "Delete" button when it appears.
20. Backup settings, wifi, themes, apps, data etc.
MIUI comes bundled with some MIUI apps. One includes Backup. This tool allows you to backup app+data, theme, homescreen layout, etc.. This is a very handy tool!!
21. When you hold down home, and bring up your taskmanager, you can long press on the app and it'll bring up extra info!
22. BATTERY SAVING TIP: IF YOU DON'T CARE FOR LED NOTIF., do the following:
a. Press the search button on your phone.
b. Once the miui search box comes up, press menu button on your phone, and hit settings
c. In the searchable items list, turn on "settings" and go back.
d. Search LED. Scroll down till you find LED pulse notif... click that and turn off LED notif. You'll notice decent battery increase!!!
Themes, themes, and more themes!
IMPORTANT TIPS
-Some times when you download themes, the browser changes the .mtz extention to .zip or .txt.. you have to rename it back to .mtz before next step.
-PLACE THEME (.MTZ) FILES ON YOUR SDCARD: /SDCARD/MIUI/THEMES
-You can backup your theme setup, which saves it as a .mtz file in the above directory, and share! --> There is a thread in the Android Theme section for this.. see below.

One of the best threads in the General area! I LOVE me some MIUI!
What are the improvements of Ics Miui over Gb Miui?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
It includes some holo UI aspects, a better task manager that combines ics task manager and miuis, better browser, really, everything is better. And its getting better than it is now every week. new music app this week.
Idk if it can be implemented on ics at the current state even without source or not. I'll ask the nexus dev. He's been busy though. He's looking into it I think. On gb without source it is not possible though. Great guide by the way

[Q] Secure Viewing: Password Required To Enter And Exit!

I'm looking for a way to handle reasonably secure documents. The idea is: I open the app/document, and the viewer has a few minutes (doesn't have to be timed). In order to give a reasonable amount of protection to other data, in order to leave the app, a password is required. So...a password is required to open the app, and to close the app.
I can encrypt the device to avoid restart and external exploitation. Extra Brownie Points if I could have the app open upon turning on the screen, and after leaving the app, you're sent to the lock screen where a password would be. In this scenario, this "mode" or app requires a password to enter the app, and if they try to access the rest of the device by exiting the app or pressing the home button, they're brought to the locked lock screen. I suppose this particular one would protect against the user simply restarting the device as well, but it would let me know that they tried to exit the app, and might have tried to access your data.
Also, while I'm not so worried about USB exploitation, it'd be nice if there was a way for me to turn off USB recognition.
I suppose this could be accomplished via some combination of an app locker and lock screen.
Just as well, it'd be uber cool if I could have this app be a secure, password protected launcher protected that only shows this one file or one app.
Maybe some type of kids-mode? Or store mode? But I want to protect against force closes, app closes, restarts, and turning the screen on and off.
If you're having difficulty imagining the scenario, just imagine that you wanted to show a PDF (perhaps proof of insurance) to a police officer, but you didn't want them looking at your photos or other text messages Like these guys:
http://www.cnet.com/news/cop-charged-with-stealing-nude-photos-from-suspects-iphone/
SO....how on earth do I do this?
*EDIT*: I suppose if I could password protect a launcher, I could then install an app that password protects all appslauncher, and then hide all apps but one...but it would have to require a password to change the launcher or enter the settings app. I'd then have to figure out a way to protect the device.... and hide all files and apps except the one document and the one app, sandbox style.

Guest mode button on lock screen

I've been looking for an app or xposed module but no luck. I've been out the Android game for awhile with the iPhone 6 but now I'm back. On the iPhone there is a tweak to allow you to have a guest mode button on the lock screen.
I find it to be more convenient when someone picks up my phone. They can enter guest mode without the back and forth handling. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's not right in the keypad like that, but if you turn on the locked display and can see the notifications (not the PIN pad), you can swipe down the notification shade and tap the user icon at the top right, but it doesn't have guest mode as an option. Sorry this isn't a direct answer.. not sure if there is a way to enable the guest icon there. Maybe create another account to be used as a guest?

How-to: enable adblockers on Verizon w/Samsung Browser

If you've been able to download the Samsung Internet browser from the Google Play Store, you still may not have the ability to activate any downloaded ad-blocking plug-ins, due to not having the menu item needed to enable and manage them in the Samsung browser's settings menu.
Note that it could be that you *do* have the appropriate menu item available, as some folks have reported that they have it.
I was not that lucky, and had to resort to a work-around to make it appear.
If you also need to do that, here is one way to do it:
In the browser's address bar, enter the following pseudo-url (do not include the quotation marks): "about:contentblock"
Then, visit the advanced settings menu ("More->Settings->Advanced") where you can now see a new entry ("Block content"), *if you have already installed one of the available ad-block plug-ins from the Play Store*.
Two decent ones are "Adblock Plus (Samsung Browser)" and "Crystal Adblock for Samsung" - they must be downloaded and installed separately from the browser itself, and must be installed before the browser will display the enable settings, even if you've already issued the "about:contentblock" pseudo-url.
Advancing to the "Block content" settings will show a switch to allow adblocking plug-ins to function, and will show a list of all installed adblock plug-ins, and allow you to select one of them to be active.
If, like me, you find you must use this work-around to get the "Block content" options to show up, then you will have to do this each time the Samsung Browser is restarted (easier to just leave it running, but, you know, stuff happens).
Therefore, it might be handy to set up a bookmark to perform the "about:contentblock" procedure. Just go into the bookmarks menu, tap the Add button, and type a name for your bookmark (I used "Enable Block content menu"), and enter " about:contentblock" as the bookmark's URL.
After clicking on this bookmark whenever the browser is restarted, you will, unfortunately, also still have to go into the "Block content" settings and turn on ad-blocking and reselect an installed plugin.
Hope some of you find this helpful.
