My Wifi doesn't show up after changing a channel - P8lite Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, so I have been using channel 13 on Wifi for a long time and everything was working fine but today I can't use channel 13 anymore :/ On the other phones (mum's and sister's) is the channel alright and everything works fine however I can't use channel 12 / 13 on P8 Lite anymore. I live in Europe so I think using channels 12 / 13 are ok. My wifi just doesn't appear when I change it to channel 12 / 13.
I also recently (1 day ago) rooted my mobile, (which I think isn't because of root).
I also chose region Czech Republic (it's located in Europe)
I also take a screenshot for a look - can you recommend me the best channel I could use?

I've searched through the forums, but don't think this subject has been previously raised.
So, just to simplify this problem, let me demonstrate with a specific example.
Let's say in my vicinity there are four Wifi APs.
Two running Channel 1, and the other two Channel 6.
Now, common sense will tell you to choose Channels 2, 3, 4, or 5, to prevent conflict with other APs.
But, this is where the problem starts.
Though Channels 2/3/4/5 are running on different channels, their actual frequency ranges overlap with each other, including with 1 and 6 (note that Channels 1 and 6 themselves don't overlap each other). Thus, this means that if I choose Channels 2/3/4/5 I'll have all four of my neighbouring APs overlapping with mine.
Wouldn't this be worse than choosing either 1 or 6, since if I choose either of these, I'll only have two APs conflicting with mine.
You are very much correct. Using the 2.4GHz ISM band, only use channels 1, 6 and 11.

Basically the channels bleed over 4 channels worth (I think) of frequency. 1, 6, and 11 are far enough apart to avoid this bleedover. So if someone has a channel 2 wireless signal it will affect channel 1. If someone has a channel 5 signal, it will affect channel 1 (I'm pretty sure, it's been a few years since my Wi-Fi college class).

The problem is that wifi is slow, i.e. speedtest.net app shows normal speed, yet ACTUAL performance is very slow. For instance, connecting to the same network and going to the same site, such as Cm 10 nightly downloads, takes about twice as long on my tab as on HTC Desire S or laptop. This goes for most sites and apps including BBC News, Pulse, Bloomberg etc . Even though I'm a newbie, dummy on tech, especially according to my children, I have run cm9 and have flashed every cm10 nightly since they started. Yes, I use it as a daily driver and whilst I got close to going back to cm9, I'm NOT.
So far the wait has been great. I love cm10 and everything I need now works, apart from WiFi tethering. (Does USB tethering work?) It's just this slow wifi that bothers me, if there's any help out there.
3G/HSDPA works fine, fast and smooth. Thanks to everyone for all the great work(cdesai, jenkins, many others)! Even us older, non-tech guys like bloat-free smooth OS'.

Wi-Fi Channels 12/13

Anyone having issues connecting to wi-fi networks on channels 12/13? On my device I'm unable to see SSIDs in these channels most of the time. Sometimes I can see networks in channel 13.
Am engaging with Google tech support, so will keep you posted.

I seem to be the only person on my street that knows channel 13 exists. No issues for me connecting. Although I run my phone to my 5Ghz connection normally, I can connect to my 2.4Ghz if needs be.

Good good.
I'm wondering whether it's down to me not activating the SIM in the phone as yet? Like a double check that the phone should be allowed to use 12&13 (rather than just selecting English UK as the language).

There's really no difference in using that over channel 11 in your case with the co-channel interference.

It's not just me then. Home router (2.4Ghz) is on ch.13 and when i return home the device will not auto-connect until i toggle wifi off and back on again. Wifi works fine until i leave again. connects fine to my wifi network at work but that is different channel and on 5Ghz too.
RMA'd my device and the new one was bad. Wouldn't see my network at all, but wouldn't register my Sim card either so I have just returned this replacement device. Replacement number 2 is on the way.
I switched to ch.12 and the same thing happens at home. Didn't try any other channels as they are too noisy. So I wonder if this is a software issue? I'm in the UK and the router is made by technicolor for Plusnet.

If channel 11 is noisy, then so is 12 and 13.

You might want to change to channel 11. With the current setup you are not only killing your own data rates, but also the rates of everyone on channel 11. These channels are not supposed to overlap, because that creates interference. Switch to channel 11.
This is my WiFi situation. I'm normally on CH.13, but switched to 12 as a test.
My 2nd unit arrived last week, and unfortunately it's the same issue as before - no channels 12 or 13, not even visible. I'll be back in touch with Google today.
Hopefully this is a software issue rather than Google/Huawei spec'ing a duff wifi chipset.
Google spoken to and basically it's a case of tough-titty - some devices aren't going to work with channels 12 & 13.
For anyone else reading this, I had this problem and 'solved' it.
If you find that you can't see channels 12 and 13 then it's almost definitely caused by the Wifi country code restrictions.
I got my Nexus 6P here in Korea and initially tried it out with no sim card. Even though the location is set in settings, without a sim card it doesn't get the wifi country code set, and I couldn't see those channels. As soon as I inserted a Korean sim card, I was able to see them.
If you are in the UK or elsewhere, using a local sim card and you can't see those channels then chances are either your country doesn't allow it or the code is already set. Either way, your options are just accept it or try one of the 'not officially supported' ways to getting around it. That's likely why Google said you were out of luck. It's possible but involves rooting etc. I think. Just search for 'change wifi country code android'. Good luck.

I am afraid that the issue is not as simple. I also have problems with channels 12 and 13, however my phone can connect to those channels, but only for a while. I quote the report I filed in the AOSP bug tracker (not yet assigned, though):
Before I continue, I am based in Switzerland, use a Swiss mobile provider (Swisscom), and I bought my phone through Google in Switzerland. This is relevant because in Europe 802.11b/g/n channels 12 & 13 are allowed, while in the North America they are allowed only under "low power conditions" with the effect that, AFAIK, many devices simply do not support them. My Nexus 6P however should (and shall) support those two channels.
Now, the problem.
I have two access points at home, both in the 2.4 GHz band: one on channels 4+6 and the other (normally) on channels 12+13. What I noticed is that my Nexus 6P would initially connect to the strongest signal independently from the channel, as expected, but then after a while (a couple of hours, maybe) would just stop seeing the signal on channels 12 & 13. Not just my own WLAN, but also neighborhood WLANs on the same channels. This means that the phone can be sitting a couple of meters from the AP in my office (channels 12+13) and be connected to the AP at the opposite corner of the building (the one on channels 4+6). I checked with "WiFi Analyzer" and the phone really does not see any signal above channel 11.
Disabling and re-enabling WiFi will make the phone see channels 12 & 13 once again. However after a while the problem appears again.
At home this is just an inconvenience: I moved the frequency of the second AP to a different channel and that "solved" the problem. On the other hand this might be a much more serious problem when I am in an environment where I can't change the WiFi settings. Maybe I want to connect to a public hotspot broadcasting on the "wrong" channels or I am at the office in an area covered by APs on channels 12 & 13. Tough luck.
Incidentally, I saw at least one report of someone who had exactly the same issue: he had to disable WiFi and enable it again to get the phone to connect to his WLAN (on channel 12 or 13, I can't remember). I also have to say that in our household we have a few other Android devices (2 x Nexus 7, 1 x Nexus 9, 2 x Nexus 4, 1 x Moto X Play) running either 6.0.1 or 5.1.1 and a few other devices (iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, laptop, 2 x Kindle) and none exhibits this behavior. It seems to be specific to the 6P.
I suspect that after a while the WiFi driver simply reverts to its default regulatory domain ("US", I assume) and stops listening to channels 12 and 13. Why it might do so is anyone's guess. Maybe doze interferes with the driver.
Same problem here. The only way to reconnect to WiFi channel 12 or 13 is to manually switch WiFi off and on again on the 6p.

Guys, there is a thread in the Nexus Help Forum and I reported the issue in the AOSP Bug Tracker. Add your contributions to those threads and star them. Let's try to bring this to Google's attention, otherwise we will never get any action on this topic.

I have been trying for a week to extract some information from Google and Huawei, but I must say that their support just doesn't know anything about this issue. It's even difficult to get someone to understand what the problem is: one Google support guy thought I was talkng about LTE channel 12, for example. Huawei support started talking about options in the WiFi settings that are not there, then they wanted to guide me through adding a new WLAN, and finally started clutching at straws, giving more and more fantastic explanations of why it might be so.
Bottom line is: nobody I talked to ever heard about this issue.
I would really like to understand if it could be a hardware issue (which I honestly doubt) because my RMA window is closing soon and I don't honestly know what to do: apart from this WiFi issue my 6P is absolutely flawless and I do not want to risk getting a new telephone only to find out that WiFi still does not work as expected and it's also got other issues. (And, yes, something like this already happened to me.)

Did you call the Google Store Support? I hope that if they hear the same reports repeatedly they will take notice.
If your telephone is unlocked (and if you are on XDA chances are it is), flash Franco's kernel. I did it today and now my problems with WiFi are gone. Plus Franco's is known to be very battery efficient. It's a win-win situation.

Random speed WiFi

The phone works fine, except that I feel that WiFi is crippled, but only through time ! When I make a speed test, I was about 1/3 of the available bandwidth (2-3 Mbps on the 11 available).
The problem is even trickier because the Play Store updates are no longer (continuous progress bar), and all the more strange that I am the only one to have this problem : Motorola Moto G2 x2, LG Fino and computers portable display normal results and no problems.
I tried to change settings of the box, without result (having graduated in Networks, I know about networking, but I may have missed a few things ).
Here are the "tests" that I made, and that did not work :
factory reset
Using Wifi N (20 or 40 Mhz)
Connecting to a WiFi repeater
Enabling / disabling IPV6
Using Conectify to create an access point
Test on another box
I therefore appeal for your help. If you have ideas (without root the phone, I want to keep the Motorola warranty), let me know !

i am on RR ROM abd i have the "not continous progress bar" in play store too. but i can live with it. maybe its a feature not an issue.
Hello, the problem of the playstore is rather a consequence of the WiFi problem. I think contact Motorola monday.

Le Pro 3 X722 - Wifi channels 12, 13, 14 not available ?

In my company, they changed the wifi channel to 13. Unfortunately my phone cannot detect it.
I am in Europe, where ch12, 13 & 14 are legals. My SIM is European too.
What I tried already :
- Change location in phone settings to China / Hong Kong / Other : no success.
- DL a fake GPS application and force my location in case my native GPS is bugged : no success.
- DL a wifi scanner and check the wifi around me : here there is something weird, some times, when I reboot my phone after changing my location, it detects a chan 13. But this chan is not detected by the wifi application, therefore I cannot connect it. This chan 13 disappears after some minutes.
Do you have any idea of where the problem is coming from ? The fact that the wifi scanner can detect for some minutes the chan13 let me think that there might be a solution.

Hotspot works on Android phones, not on Win or Mac?

Hi All,
The problem is that the hotspot (2.4 GHz, Device identification:default, security WPA2-Personal) is correctly seen by the laptops but there is no internet connection. I received the Mi 9T last week and it's a great phone except for the hotspot not working properly. I received it with the global version installed, I did all the usual updates up to MIUI V11.0.4 (QFJMIXM).
On the Macbook Pro (Retina 2015, Mojave 14.6) there is a very slow, barely usable, connection which is confirmed by the MCS index = 0, despite the strong signal (RSSI= -26 dBm). Under the WiFi information on the Mac, the country code is missing and the transmission channel is usually an unusaul value (3, 7 or 8 I noticed). For comparison, when using the hotspot function in another Android phone (Honor 8X with stock ROM) with the same SIM card , the MCS index is 7, the country code is correct, the transmission channel is 6 or 11, and the download/upload is around 20 Mbps.
When using a Dell laptop (Windows 10), the laptop connects to the MI 9T hotspot and has an IP but the pages are not even loaded. Funny enough, when both laptops are connected to the wifi created by the MI 9T, they can ping each other correctly.
The data rates on the Mi 9T over 4G are really fast (>40 Mbps). The Honor 8X works perfectly when connected to the MI 9T, with rates > 20Mbps.
Reading other discussions online, someone fixed it with

I checked the correct value after rebooting (zero as expected) but still no/slow internet on the laptops. Same with adding DUN in the APN type. I also tried to change the SIM from slot 1 to 2, no difference at all.
As a last desperate chance, I unlocked the boootloader and flashed the European version (QFJEUXM) with TWRP. The flash was perfect, but the problem is still there exactly as described above with the Global ROM.
Is anyone else having a similar problem? Do you think that other ROM (Pixel Experience, LineageOS, etc.) may fix this?
I'd really like to keep the phone because the hardware is amazing, but the overall experience is quite a pain with such a limitation on the hotspot function.

Used hotspot many times with notebooks, phones, consoles nad never had a problem. you could try to set cellular settings manually. I'm on 11.0.4 also Lineage worked ok
Yes thanks, I tried to use the same APN settings of the other android phone with the same SIM, still same problem.
Update: I have upgraded to the latest weekly ROM (MIUI 11.2 20.3.26), unfortunately the country code is still X3 when using the hotspot, both at 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz. The only difference is that at 2.4 GHz the MCS level is 0 (even if internet works normally) and with the 5 GHz setting the MCS is 7 or 8. In both cases internet works fine, but the country code is an issue with the firewall on other devices.
Any suggestion or help is greatly appreciated as I really need the hotspot function to work as per the other Android phone!
