Battery drain issues - Xperia Z5 Compact General

The only working solution for now: flash Lollipop. It's not perfect but it heats and drains battery much less than Marshmallow.
I'm creating this thread so that we can discuss battery life issues and look for a solution.
There is a popular thread on this topic but it is marked as solved, and while the original poster's issue has been solved there are many others that remain.
For some people the issue was solved when rootkernel was updated to fix some bug. But that was a long time ago, and some bugs are obviously present even in the latest kernels rooted with the latest rootkernel versions. It's still unclear if the issue is present on non-rooted kernels.
I will create a poll, please consider answering it to help clear the issue.

By the way, has anyone encountered any issues on 5.1, or is it just a Marshmallow issue?

Partial solution: I installed OM5Z kernel and it has significantly improved battery life on Marshmallow.
While it's still much worse than what you would expect from a Sony compact, it's not awful anymore. The phone can go a day (no heavy usage) without charging now.

Stock or Xpower 4 ,rooted or not dosnt metter - i have a drain every night(8-9 h of sleep) about 5-7% in airplane mode.Try BBS and WD now but seems phone sleep good.Think i lost about 15-20% at 24 hours
On Xpower 4 lite as is...with andro kernel v36 same issue. And i dont have any other soft. Goggle sync and other garbage is off.
Dont now where is may be problem.

Try Xpower3, it looks like X4 got more problem. I'm running v3.0 Full(stock kernel), when I set it to airplane mode over night only drain 1~2% everytime but I've installed greenify donated and used xposed amplify.

For anyone reading this thread, are there any other things people can note about their setup?
Country? Carrier?
If you are having issues, what apps do you use? Do you have a microSD card and if so, what brand/model?
If you are not having issues, same question about apps and microSD card.
I have seen on my phone the higher Android OS CPU usage which is of course the black hole of power drain for many people. I still need to do more scientific testing of usaging or avoiding apps to see if anything is triggering the drain.
T-Mobile US customer here, typically on Wifi at work/home also with T-Mobile cellspot for signal strengh. Standard apps for messaging and social media including Snapchat (bad app for power usage) but avoiding Facebook for now. Google Now Launcher.

Stock firmware, rooted stock kernel, don't have issues
1) Z5 was incredibly hot out of the box
2) Wiping the system, rooting the kernel etc. fixed this but gave me awful battery life
3) Installing the modded kernel then fixed the battery life (found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z5-compact/general/9-battery-drain-overnight-97-deep-sleep-t3382145)
I can stretch it to 3 days with light use, a day of heavy use can put me back 50-60%
I'm from the UK with the UK unbranded official ROM.

I meant fake battery statistic .... If your cable or adapter starting to have problem, it told you 100% but actually only 50% so dropping real fast.

Ок i try.
I found software RealBattery and CaliBattery.Try this too.

I have also recently upgraded from Z3C to Z5C with stock Singapore Customized FW, but I live in France (ordered from eBay).
Weird thing is that during the day it loses may be 30-40% in 6 hours, but every evening after I come back from work, phone overheats with battery up to 50 degrees and drains 30% in 1 hour...
In stats, it shows Android OS using most of battery and keep awake being 80% of up time...
I had same issue on Z3C with last 6.0.1 MM.
During the night I usually lose 5-10%.
Any advice?

The problem is that I have E5803, and not E5823...
Will the HK FW work on it? It's only for E5823 I think (according to Xperifirm)
Also, what exactly should I do - I should wipe everything when installing using Flashtool right?
Should I also do reset after installation?
Can I restore my backup or you would recommend to make a clean install of the apps as well?
I don't want to lose data of apps.

Before reflash or do someting try to use clean frimware without your usually apps.Do factory reset.Dont forget to make backup of your current state phone i f you need.
I think problem exactly in your apps.
I have issue with night drain and i try HK frimware on my 5823 and i dont feel any difference.

Okay, now that I have gathered some statistics I take back my words about significantly improved battery life. It's slightly improved and still awful.

I'm using stock fw, but have deleted about 60-70 apps I don't have any use for. I also use OM5Z kernel. I experience no drain what I know of, usually have about 3 days with normal use.
The only issue I experienced is that the phone totally crashed a couple of times. I can't wake it up at all, and it doesn't take any charge (LED doesn't lid up). I have to use the reset button to reboot it. But so far, it's a small issue

"Android OS" battery drain, the device's achilles heel

The 'Android OS' battery drain seems to be the Achilles Heel of the Zenfone 2. I really like the device, the camera is even pretty decent when using 'Open Camera', but the battery life is definitely poor.
Are we holding out for 5.1 to fix this? CM? Any thoughts? I've tried a few things and not had much success sadly.
P
Yep, the Android OS battery drain is pretty terrible. I don't have any hopes of ASUS fixing it. Good thing is that CM for this phone is getting more and more stable with every release.
using root apps you can reduce the drain, and have almost zero drain for 5 to 6hrs..
and yes my hope is asus 5.1 or 5.1.1 should fix it.. i didn't have when i bought the phone in pre order but suddenly it came
I see it bad in the zenfone 2 but even on the Oneplus One its there on 5.0.2, so hoping 5.1.1 will fix it. Currently running cm11s on multirom as its that annoying, kitkat was great for minimal idle battery drain.
That is one thing due to which I've been holding off purchasing this phone. Will buy it only if either 5.1 update fixes the battery or CM rom is stable enough to be daily driver. Until then I'll wait-n-watch.
Best battery life I have ever had in a phone, after root and greenify. With the built in 2.0, its just about perfect!. Better than my G2.

The WW firmware has the drain issue I barely made 3 hours on screen time so I installed the CN firmware and the Google apps later, now I make 5 hours on screen time and about 4 if I heavy game.
My zenfone was the CN SKU with the WW firmware I don't know if that makes any difference, the point is that with the CN firmware there of no drain issue

I have the 4gb /64gb zenfone 2, CN SKU with the latest CN firmware.
I had the drain issue with the WW one, after installing the CN firmware I have installed only Google maps, play store, chrome and contracts sync I don't use anything else from Google.
I had trouble to revert from WW to CN but I managed it and got 2 more hours ost.
So my guess is that the WW firmware has something that the CN does not and kills the battery
I get 4,5 to 5 hours ost with optimal battery mode and no greenify out any other app everything stock, maybe I could get some more time with a battery management but I don't care since I make 2 days with moderate use 2 hours ost per day.
If you already have PowerNap, that's half the battle. There are instructions on setting up Amplify and Greenify on that thread, but here's another one that's specific to our phone:

Battery drain
I have to honestly say I'm not running into any major battery drain, regular daily use, I'll end up with probably around 40-50% left at night which is a lot IMO. I'm coming from a Galaxy S5 and I'm getting about the same amount of use out of it, if not better on my ZF2. Understand that the ZF2 is a more powerful unit then the S5 and with a bigger screen, so with those variations, it's actually doing well. I'm not rooted and I run a lot of apps/games on mine but I don't play games much, the odd time.
True, the Android OS drain is the only problem I have and that's the reason why I've gone back using my xiaomi redmi note 4g which can consistently give me 6 hours sot per day.
The zf2 only gives me about 3-4 hours sot with my normal usage, even though I've minimized syncing and other stuffs without rooting.
Meanwhile, I'll just wait for a couple weeks and hopefully Asus will have 5.1 for us to solve the Android OS issue. Otherwise, will be selling it off which I'm quite reluctant to right now...

Okay, can you detail out your setup... As in steps taken for reverting from ww to cn and from where did you get the gapps from?
I did it the same way as mentioned on the main thread to change from CN to WW but on reverse, I used CN boot, drodiboot and recovery with CN firmware.
I installed the gaps via the Google app installer is a simple app that you install as a regular app and from there you can install any Google app you want, I haven't used zip gaps for years.
If you can't find the files pm me your email to send then to you because I had some trouble finding them.
I often say to make a guide about it to help people improve their battery life but im to busy or bored to do it

Hmm... This makes me think that the kernel for the cn and ww are different as well... Coz even with the rom being replaced by the cm 12.1 or any other version made any such impact to the battery life in its own self... @TheSSJ can you kindly check as you've seen enough into this than any other dev so far...

Battery Life on Recent Nougat OTA

Question.. How is everyone else's battery life been so far on Android N? Mine has been atrocious and it's mainly due to Bluetooth. I did a clean install by flashing the recent google image (MTC20F) in ADB then enrolling my Nexus in the beta program and getting the N OTA. I charged my phone to 100% then left for the gym around 5am, got home at 7:40am and my battery is down to 46% from just listening to Pandora, Spotify via bluetooth. Here are some screenshots.. I was getting significantly better battery life on Pure Nexus Rom.. Also, I am stock and not rooted or using any custom tweaks. It's 100% Stock

Try installing the EX kernel and disabling touchboost under the CPU settings. I get ~40 hours battery life with normal usage. If you tweaked the settings i am sure you would get 2 days easy.

Mine is doing the exact same thing as the op's. Bluetooth is just killing the battery too but I am on stock, not rooted or anything. I went from 89% to 26% in a span of 3 hours with Bluetooth and Spotify on in my car and at the gym. I have taken out almost all 3rd party apps, which seems to have helped but this morning as the Bluetooth was on (for Spotify and Waze) during my commute to work, it went right down to 75% from 100% in a span of 45 minutes and that's with the screen OFF. On Android M, the most it had gone down to was to 88%. 75% is ridiculous.
With Bluetooth off, the phone seems to be doing OK ? Android OS and Android System are eating up the battery.
I will do the factory reset tonight and hope for the best but this is the worst battery life I've ever seen on my phone.

There is a thread for just about every phone that has MM.
Look around for Android System and Android OS.
Not in LP.
I don't know what Bluetooth and android system/os issues you are mentioning, but I did a clean stock restore with factory images from Pure Nexus then took the OTA through system update, all was good, did a factory data reset, pushed twrp 3.0.2-1 then then supersu 2.76 and took most of the Google stuff I don't use out.
No issues what's so ever. Battery is great. I'm losing about 10% battery for every 45-50 min sot. And the new doze is working flawlessly. I lost 1% battery overnight in 7.5 hours. Yesterday Gsam battery monitor showed my phone was in light or deep doze in 7:20 out over 9.5 hours of charge with 2 hours sot.
I'm only rooted with some debloat and TiBu and battery apps gsam and wakelock detector
It's not BT guys. It's your music streaming. Bet if you moved to an app that uses on board music and tested it you would find you have better battery life.
I'm stock and not rooted with any mods.. Just find it weird.. On PN Rom my battery life was fantastic with Elemental X Kernel..

I don't think that's the issue seeing as how you can download your spotify playlist to your phone which I do.. Not to mention in my screenshot, Spotify wasn't the root of the issue, the Bluetooth was at 20%.. Nothing else was close..

Look at the cell connection. There are 2 major factors normally to battery drain. 1. SOT and 2. Cell connectivity. As an example. It doesnt matter how big of a battery I use or the device. I can easily kill the battery on any phone within 4 hours without even touching it due to cell signal.
Normally I would agree with you but in the screenshots I posted (not sure why they're so small), my SOT was only 16 mins and my LTE connection was at full strength. I never had these issues when I was using Pure Nexus Rom and I was using that ROM since October of last year with the same exact setup and haven't moved from my current apt.. Literally haven't done anything differently from that Rom to Nougat and for some reason, bluetooth is killing my battery. In the pics I posted where it shows what's eating battery, it was at 20% and the next thing was 9%.. Spotify was at 3% and Pandora was around 3%..

Custom roms change how things work like that. Like I noticed on a few roms they will throttle the data when the device is off.
Those stats really are kinda misleading. What ever you use the most will always be at top. No matter how much it uses. As an example. for 30 min say you use youtube the most and the next 30 you use spotify the most. You will see them swap off when you look at what is draining your battery.
Also you have to remember that with the new update many things have changed system wide. If it were me. I would pull a logcat. I dont have the official yet for my nexus 6 so still on the developer preview and I run BT all day long using power amp and it bearly touches the battery. Mind you that could just be issue with the 7.0 update which is why they are already working on 7.1 to be released in a few weeks.
Very good point.. I'll continue to monitor it over the next few days, if all else fails I will just go back to a custom rom and wait for 7.1... Thanks for the info

Grab a logcat. Did you take an OTA or do a full complete redo for the update? I am shooting in the dark myself really. Just suggesting what I would do. I also dont use streaming music apps. I keep all my music on device for many reasons.
I did a factory reset. Thought it fixed my Bluetooth drain as I had Spotify on and Waze while connected to my car this morning. Usually by the time I get to work after 45-50 minutes, I'd be down to 88% from 100% (with a few 3rd party apps installed). Thought it was fixed as I only went down to 96% for the duration of my commute (with minimal 3rd party apps installed).
However, the Bluetooth drain showed up again when I connected my Bluetooth headphones for use in the gym. The drain was not as drastic as I reported earlier. However, it still took up a nice chunk and Bluetooth again is sitting at the top of my battery usage list along with Android System and Android OS. The phone is at least acceptable now but I have no idea why it is draining as quickly now when it never used to do this before when I was on Android M. It's not like I changed my routine or usage habits.
Also, I am on stock, not rooted or anything so really not sure what is going on. Maybe I will just wait for a patch or something.

Much better battery life on 6.0 than Nougat, why?

Hello guys. So recently, i've got an S5 (G900F). As soon as i get it, I installed LineageOS 14.1, the latest in order to have Nougat on my device.
The problem was that the device couldnt switch on Doze (or smth like this, i dont know), and the standby battery time is very bad, it discharges 1-2-3% / h standby.
I though that my battery was the problem so i've got a fresh, brand new S5 Battery for a fortune, and guess what? Its the same!
So i decided to install RR Nougat, and it's exactly the same. My last tough was to install an RR MM to the devie, and guess again what! The battery life is amazing, it basically stays the same % in standby.
Why do this bug has in Nougat, and how can I fix this?
Thanks!
Install the Boeffla-Kernel. Battery life with LineageOS and that kernel is much better than MM with stock.

Thanks. I did install the kernel, but right now I'm using RR Nougat. When I installed that kernel I haven't spot any difference with battery. What's your settings in that kernel?
I might consider installing LOS back.

Got stock MM now, and overnight with BT on I see no difference compared to LOS with Boeffla with the battery friendly preset. Haven't compared if one is more battery friendly during daily use.
Going back to LOS as the latest MM update from Samsung doesn't have the mobile ID banking apk which isn't available on at Play. Samsung sucks!

Embarrassed too! Thought I restored LOS, but then I saw Magisk was installed, and that didn't add up... Was RR I had, but couldn't get root for the Boeffla app, so I installed the latest LOS nightly, and it's awesome. Got the flat line this night with BT connected too! Haven't installed Boeffla yet.

Strange. Can you send me a screen shot from the battery usage?
My s5 is broken recently, i was using LOS and i noticed that battery is poor. Now, i'm using galaxy a3 16 with stock rom MM, 2100mh of battery, the battery is amazing than galaxy s5 LOS with 2800mh of battery.
hey guys, try to get latest baseband and bootloader for your devices. I've updated mine and tons of problems were solved (I've never suspected this would be the problem doe)

Okay. Tell me a ROM that:
- Doesnt lag
- Have a great battery life
I assume every rom that is Nougat based are excluded from this list.

Never thought about how doze worked in Boeffla, or understood, but it might be that unchecking it does that no apps are dozing, but checked only those that are white listed native in the battery settings are not. Right?

lollipop is the best of them all: I'm using S3 with archidroid 5.1.1 and it doubled my battery life (i kid you not!). I've tried RR MM and Nougat and it too but battery life was way way worse, in general 6 and 7 are worse OS-es than KK...
so to conclude, I'm getting S5 on Saturday and will install most optimized lollipop on it judging by my and you experience on other OS-es here

Ridiculous battery life - dropping rapidly when not in airplane mode

Hi,
Phone is running stock firmware and not rooted.
Im thinking its the phone and not software related as issue seemed to being happening out of no where after the phone for the last 9 months had been superb for battery life considering usage it gets.
Originally thought it could have been an app update that caused it so uninstalled all previously installed and updated apps but same issue keeps happening with rapid battery drop off. Next course of action was to format phone and start from scratch with nothing installed and only my gmail account added. The same issue with battery rapidly dropping when not in airplane mode. Issue is shown in screen captures below with phone basically stock and no apps installed.
First 2 images show a day where I was working and had phone in and out of Airplane mode which shows the graduall drop off of power but then the drastic vertical drop was when I put phone back into service.

Can anyone shed some light on this? is my battery fried?
On another note should this need to be sent back under warranty it was originally bought direct from Amazon spain - would it be ZTE UK I contact and if so whats the best way to do this?
Thanks for looking....
It seems some of us has this issue. It might be software like the modem! Since it drains so fast from a weak signal. I really hope there's a fix. I hope oreo fixes this too

Although if you look at my first screen capture even at times when the phone has strong signal there is severe drop off of power. Has there be any mention of ZTE replacing batterys under warranty?
I was telling on XDA that b08 is worst ROM ever. More people have this issue, its software related. Not hardware of any kind. Cant recall what is the name of android battery saving function. Snooze or something. It doesn't work at all. I managed to improve battery life by uninstalling some apps that maybe drain battery. But my phone can't manage to stay alive for more then 8 hours moderate usage. Same thing goes for mic echo issue. That is not user fault. Same goes here with German b08 ROM. I personally thing that German group is more like copy paste type of developers then actual European support.
For me best ROM so far in terms of battery life was MM B06
Whats most irritating is that i am back with old type of resolving issue about this phone. Disabling 2/3 of processes. But in this case for battery sake not processor or ram issue
this is getting crazy theres like 3 threads now of battery drains

Don't even know what it is. I'm really guessing it is A2017U Bootstack B35. Any custom rom under any kernel yields the same horrible battery life. I'm afraid of flashing an older bootstack. Perhaps the safest one is LineageOS universal bootloader B15 and Modem
https://imgur.com/a/sH17g
That battery usage is NOT normal. I believe culprit is the modem. The battery seems to take a hit more when the signal changes rapidly. I had a strange anomaly yesterday when I had 69% battery for over 40 minutes. The signal was more or less much more stable than that in another area. Those screenshots were taken at work. I've never had that much drain prior to updating bootstack
Edit: this is that anomaly from yesterday https://imgur.com/a/VnDBS the signal was more or less more stable and the battery was really good. Like normal. And that was with music playing from Spotify via mobile data and Dolby atmos and viper4a while browsing Facebook and using messenger. So yes, I believe it could be the modem
@DrakenFX whats your opinion on this?
Why would every user not be experiencing the same battery issues?

I don't know where to look up my version, but I'm running on the latest resurrection remix and I'm also getting like 2 hours sot max... It'd be really nice if there was any way to know how we can circumvent this or maybe update to a newer version of the bootstack - I'm on an A2017G

My question to everyone with this problem was if flashing a full stock image through MiFlash wouldn't solve it. I've had this problem; also random reboots which didn't get fixed even by updating from M to N, and MiFlash (or going LOS then back to stock) fixed it. I thought i had told you to use miflash, but it must have been someone else lol
What's the point in fragmenting the issue in like 3 different threads? Are the other ones dead?

So you're running on RR now again after going through this progress and you're getting a whopping 7 hours sot? When did you buy your Axon (or rather, how old is your battery)? 7 hours sounds like Utopia to me

Nope, not like that.
I bought my phone in February. I mostly used it with stock, but tried some custom ROMs although most were horrible to use back then. One day around May (i think) I had some trouble going back to stock, and I DFU-bricked my phone. So, 4th categ brick repair. After using MiFlash to install Marshmallow B10 I used it for a couple weeks (Xposed being one of the reasons), but battery life was around 3.5h SOT and I had random reboots, even without xposed... I updated to the latest N and it was exactly the same. Back to the drawing board then.
So I flashed RR, then a kernel, then added substratum + swift black to the mix, and I got 7h SOT.
Then I got bored of RR and returned to stock, and that's when I got the 3 hours of overall battery (not even SOT) so I used Nuclea for like a month. After that I went back to stock and had the usual 4-5h SOT.
You basically have to reinstall the system from the ground up and your battery life will get fixed eventually if it is a software problem. But better do it fast, because each charging cycle is bad for the battery

I don't know about the speakers but I believe they sound okay (way better than my friends' S7edge/S8/3T for sure xd). As of headphones you HAVE to flash the AK4490 patch or you'll be using the other DAC.
I recommend to use Viper4ARISE or the V4A magisk module from shadysquirrel. You'll learn to live without Atmos since the AK4490 will work on everything, so it compensates with soundstage.

Battery issues with custom roms

Hello everyone..... I have flashed 3 custom roms on my phone rr aex and lineage ..... In all three roms i had the same problem which i didn't have on stock rom, i.e. battery. In the custom roms i get 1%drop in every 3-4 mins while screen is on. And while the screen is off it is okay bur sometime while the screen is off too the battery drops 1% about evry 3 mins.... This didnt happen in the stock rom , on that i got about 1% drop in 9 mins plus the standby time was amazing..... So i wanted to ask why is this issue there? Is there a problem with the custom roms or there kernels? And should i flash the stock kernel on lineage os 15.1, will it make a difference??what else can i do for better battery? Thanx in advance:good:.

I believe its with the ROM itself. The way the ROM manages BG processes and deep sleep cycles, u can improve battery with the custom kernel ( ko kernel ) but you have to sacrifice a bit of performance , by twerking the CPU profiles using kernel adiutor , but even then it won't make a huge difference.
I'd stay if battery is ur concern, go with pure aosp or stock . I hope the issue is fixed soon , the dev have acknowledged it.
Im using rr rom with ko kernel, greenfly and amplify.it gaves me about 10 hours SOT.battery drops at 20% after 2 hours using SOT

Why is that ?is there a problem in my phone or is it just cos we use pur phones in different ways.

It does depend on how you use your phone. What is important is to figure out if your phone is using battery on something that you don't expect it to. Use better battery stats to see if your phone is using battery on unwanted stuff. Now I am getting 15h battery.

Nopes, it shouldnt be that much. Check your partial wakelocks or kernel wakelocks. Sometimes i have cdfinger_wakelock which is taking up battery. I also have ActivityManager-Sleep wakelock which is also consuming too much battery. When I restart things start working(sometimes). Sometimes I don't have a clue how to stop them.

This happens with me too..... Sometimes when i restart it after charging to 100% then it doesn't consume any battery while the screen is off even for hours but sometimes while sleeping and even when screen is on the phone consumes 4% battery in 12 mins. I hope there will be a permanent fix for this in the future.
