Marshmallow Battery Drain, Overheating - Tips for the Galaxy J7 - Samsung Galaxy J7 Guides, News, & Discussion

After updating to MM, I have a serious battery drain while surfing the net.
I looked on the net for some pointers and found this interesting article on Orduh
Fix: Samsung Galaxy J7 Battery Drain/Overheating
Comments welcome.

Thanks for your effort but it doesn't help at all.
I think the problem is with MM itself. From the first day of upgrade battery life is taken a hit and also has little heating issue.
Doesn't matter whichever MM rom or kernel I flash same result.
Now decided to go back to lollipop, any rom suggestion will be highly appreciated.

I can run some MM roms ok now. Not all of them. E.g the S5 Neo v1, MM stock graced and A5 (2016) MM port - these work ok for me.
Others give me overheating.
Some more tricks here .....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=68274575
Good luck!

Will report after trying.

I tried with the method you described but same result, battery drain on surfing and heating.
To check this is not a hardware issue I downgraded to lollipop and no battery drain problem at all. I've talked to my friends, some of them have same issue on MM and reverted back to LP, I've got no option to do the same for now.
Just one question do you feel any performance or battery difference between Optimax 4.0 and stock kernel?
Thanks for your help.

Sorry for your MM woes.
For performance Optimax 4.0 is tops, but you pay a small price. In my experience it uses slightly more but noticeable battery, say 10 - 15%. I end up having to recharge like 45 mins earlier than stock.
The whole experience is "zippier" without overheating.
Some questions for you - what J7 variant do you have? Which region MM are you trying to install? Is it the same as your "native" region CSC? Maybe you could try a different region MM update?
On my J7 my native CSC was AFR, but have a long list of compatible CSC's (see pic attached). Not all had MM available.
I first chose XFE South Africa and the surfing drain was horrendous.
Then I switched to XSG United Arab Emirates and I was good.
If you have problems downgrading I can show you what worked for me

Thanks mate for sharing.
I`ve J700F and CSC is INS, BPH4 (Baseband is BPH2) with August security patch. I`ve some sort of overheating and battery drain issue (while surfing and receiving calls). This is a rooted Stock with stock kernel.
Is it safe to flash another CSC and if so, then which one I should try ? Or I should try to downgrade to LP ?
BTW, I flashed stock MM with full wipe method (as you mentioned in your post).
Thank you once again for this info.

Install the app I used and check if you have multiple CSC compatibility. Info on the CSC tab.
Samsung Phone Info on playstore
Or you could install a slightly older MM e.g. J700FXXU2BPG3 and see if it behaves better with your fon.

Yap, it has multiple CSC (INS, BNG,NPL, SLK).
But sotck MM is available only for SLK (BPG3).
BTW, Can I downgrade from stock MM to stock LP safely ?

Uncle Sammy may take a VERY long time to push out MM for all CSC regions.
Try SLK - you lose nothing.
Otherwise - YES you can downgrade to LP. I did it for a short while.
I followed these steps
* Wipe in TWRP
* Install a custom LP rom in TWRP
* Then flash stock LP rom using Odin
Flashing LP a stock LP rom first will give you a blank screen at reboot.

Thanks mate for the valuable information.
I`ve flashed the J700FXXU2BPG3 build. Let`s see how it behaves. I`ll give you feedback. If the result remains same , then try to downgrade.
BTW, which rom are you using right now ? what is your feedback ?

My 2 favourites S5 Neo Port & MM Stock Debloated Graced.
I swap between them every 3 or 4 days.

Well - said mate. :good:
I too love to flash different roms, but prefer stock - flavored rom.
BTW, I`ve read in one of your post (in S5 Neo Port thread) that v.1 is much better than v.2. v.2 has some sort of heating issue. Hope you prefer to use v.1 - right ?
And what about the another one ?

Hey, don't get me wrong. The problem is with my fon. Not the roms.
Yes, S5 Neo v1 behaves well on my fon. Like >>95% stock like.
V2 causes heating.
Our Devs have helped feed our flashing addictions ?
Am not complaining, lol!!

@dodo2244 Thanks a lot for your suggestions. I've flashed Indonesian version Rom on J7-00F and it worked, everything back to normal. But after using Rom's like A5 2016 or graced who would wan't to go back to stock. So, by reading your comments flashed s5 neo v1.. and it worked similar like stock no heating issue and battery drain like Neo v2.. (Not complaining). It just has volume bug , Is there a way to fix it?
Also please give some feedback about Note V2 Rom.
Looks like I'm also becoming flashing addict now.
Thanks again.

Yay?!!
Say MM ?.
Bravo for persisting.
Volume bug - his fix was to give us v2. Sigh! We can't make demands.
Note v2 .... hmmmm.
I did not test it for very long, but its very beautiful. Aren't these Note 7 apps heavy? Will test again over the weekend.
Enjoy MM on your fon.

This build is better than the latest build. Heating issue reduces (though a little bit heating issue is there). I`ll try the S5 Neo Port v.1, and give you the feedback.

Can someone let me know right firmware to download?

I am running XtreStoLite (5.1.1 already). Can't see much difference in battery life and memory management (both were fine to me before), but RAW support is really neat . Shame that we have to use 3rd party app for it, but still I am happy that the API is there.

XEF CSC here. Updating now. Will try and look for changes. Battery I hope is one of them.
This thread is concerning stock roms so going on and on with your custom roms (xtrestolite or whatever) is kinda pointless here...

I tried something similar flashed XEF over my BTU phone but because my phone is MULTICSC it keeps on defaulting to BTU.
But in theory if you can flash XEF and get the CSC to change then it should get the OTA.

Users that installed the update said the memory problem is fixed. I have the stock 5.1.1. and i'm waiting for the update. I will get back with the details.
Would be nice of Canadian carriers to push this.. I need that bootloader.
I am running the update for a few hours.
Multitasking is not fixed.
I feel that it is a bit better though. Although that might be a placebo effect only.

Lollipop vs KitKat on YotaPhone 2

I have read some reports about bad battery life with Lollipop. Is this true?
KitKat has nicer system UI regarding the use of E-ink screen because KitKat menus, settings etc. use darker backgrounds than Lollipop. That looks better on E-ink on black YotaPhone 2.
What are your thoughts on KitKat vs Lollipop with YotaPhone 2?
I also read some reports about Wifi issues with Lollipop but maybe they were relating to wrong radio being flashed, I don't know.

Your post just crossed mine (http://forum.xda-developers.com/yotaphone-one/general/battery-life-ru-134-firmware-using-app-t3490355) but for me battery life on Lollipop is great and I have no WiFi issues. The latest RU firmware also has the september 2016 security update. For me it is Lollipop all the way.
Where did you download the latest RU firmware?
In here:
ftp://fw.ydevices.com/YotaPhone2/Firmwares/RU/
The latest is 5.0.0-RU1.1.124.zip
Where to find 134?

Am going to downgrade from Marshmallow to Kitkat.
There are issues such as more battery drain than its supposed to be, phone overheats too much (never happened on kitkat before) and Marshmallow's white theme makes me sick as there is no option to change it to dark so it doesn't really fit in Yotaphone 2 unless you have white version which is pretty rare one. YotaStore apps arent compatibile with MM 6.0.1 so..
There are new things that are improved or added but still wont use it

I have used mine with Nova launcher which allows you to make dark theme. But I am still going to do the same for especially overheating problem. Indeed i've faced lots of problems with MM:
- Overheating on almost every situation including EPD reading/browsing/maps etc.
- if (esp. extreme) YotaEnergy is activated, Mobile Network is killed/blocked until restart the phone. Disabling YotaEnergy again doesn't solve the problem
- EPD screen lock insensibility randomly
- very restricted settings on MM
- etc.
Update1:
I have installed KK (4.4.3-S01-003-RU1.0.3.61a). Findings:
- battery seems a little bit ok compared MM
- overheating problem is same i think
- EPD screen resolution is awfull
- As known, all apps are outdated
- KK interface is also offensive compared with my old KitKat installed Optimus G Pro
So, i have to try Lollipop
Update2:
I have finally installed LP (5.0.0-RU1.1.134 ). It is ok:
- battery is optimum, there is no drain and stable
- no unexpected overheating, it is ok!
- EPD screen resolution is good
- I wish i could launch the color screen directly from EPD screen like on MM shortcut. For EPD, MM is better.
Unfortunately even after downgrading to kitkat then update to lollipop (RU or EU) I still get the overheating issues
Before upgrading to MM it was fine, but from that point it began to overheat and I can't get it to stay cool again.

Since I did not want to wait for Samsung I installed the update myself by getting the already released version they seed in Italy since a few days.
Almost the same. Lte and German Sim card working, everything like if is supposed to. I think installing the Italian update is not a problem.
Works like a charm. Much faster then before. Some screens are following. I can recommend it to everyone that doesn't want to longer. St least for me there's is no problem.

Is your device a T715 or T715Y? Does it even make any difference? I have a T715Y (imported from China, I think) and have downloaded the Nougat ROM (which is noted as being for T715 (but not specifically fore the T715Y) from Sammobile and tried installing it using Odin 3.12 but it fails. I also tried using Odin 3.11 which also fails. Both ran as Administrator.
Current ROM Build Number is T715YDXU2BPJ1

I think you need a rom for your device (https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-T715Y/).
For me the update with the italian version worked great and I now have a german-austrian-italian S2
I have sm t 715 without y. Differences between the both devices I don't know but I'd suggest you wait until the proper firmware is release for your device. As far as I see there is no android 7 rolled out four your device.
Any ETA on Android 7.0 for the real SM-T715Y? Does anybody know anything?
I got the SM-T710 XSA Nougat update some time ago now. But I bought the 4G version off Gumtree and it is still stuck with 6.0.1 which means the lowlife carriers are probably halting the updates.
It is disgusting. With carrierless Samsung Galaxy smartphones, Samsung waits for the carriers in XSA region to start to release their crapware, before they release the official Samsung firmware. I do not know if this occurs in other regions.
FYI, the SM-T715Y is the real Tab S2. The SM-T715 has very few firmware regions and was probably made for dodgy countries with outdated cell towers. Look them up on sammobile.com/firmwares
Thanks people!

Don't update to Bootloader S7 ESL6 update (december 2019 security patch)

Just to tell the fellow users of S7 edge .. don't update to the newest december security patch due to huge battery drain by android OS, kernel and system (samsung process)
The new bootloader is also version 7 which means you cannot go back once upgraded..
Previous firmware S6 ESH5 comparison with S7ESL6
Avg battery life of 1 day (a bit more) / Avg SOT : around 7 hours
Usage: medium usage.. (no gaming/youtube/video.. mainly chatting , fb usage and whatsapp.. and light/medium browsing on chrome most apps put to always sleep.. no phone calls (only using wifi), no auto sync, aod and location services disabled and using dual sim - dual standby) on S6ESH5
Avg battery life of less then half a day / Avg SOT : less then 4 hours..
Usage : very light usage (occasional browsing/chat.. no gaming/video/youtube.. very little browsing on chrome.. no calls.. most apps put to always sleep, no phone calls (only using wifi), no auto sync, aod and location services disabled and using dual sim - dual standby) on S7ESL6
In my opinion.. this maybe the last and worst update for s7 series which samsung has clearly done that to push the users of this amazing device to upgrade to their newer phones.. I highly regret updating my phone.. and so i felt it necessary to warn others .. Good luck !
scheduled obsolescence is real and Samsung does it even with your best phones

BL got nothing to do with battery drains... it boots up operating system, if i'm not mistaken? Battery drain is related to CP.

Don't know about that version .. maybe its in eu region?
Really easy to get 7 hours SOT if you follow my usage scenario ?
Just put all apps which you dont want real time notifications to always sleep.. keep auto sync, bluetooth, location off unless you actively use any of them.. use more wifi instead of mobile data .. auto brightness always set on (quite low brightness on my phone) every other feature (whatever i forgot to mention here is also disabled)

people will infer all kinds of things from posts, thats the drawback about forums. you say something and think that the person reading what you wrote will gather the same information from what you said that you were intending. Doesnt always happen that way tho for an example, this post that im currently writing might be interpreted as mean, condescending or rude and it isnt intended to be like that in the slightest. Que ser a ser a, i suppose have a great day!
Hi, does anyone knows how to check the bootloader and firmware version? i'd already update like 1 or 2 moths ago and I've had the phone for about 4 months, so i can't give a properly opinion about battery performance.
I was doubting if i should root or not and when finally got decided to do it I'd found your post, do you think that this could affect the rooting process? Cause did read in one of the last post from Arona67's guide on how to root a8 stock rom, a guy saying he messed up his phone flashing twrp with a new firmware downloaded from sammobile. I had been stuck with a Galaxy Alpha bootloader locked for a few years and would be a shame if i can't root again
Sorry if i misunderstand something, english is not my native language, and the last device i rooted was a cooper(Galaxy Ace)!, so you can imagine how outdated i am.
Thanks very much for your help and have a nice day :good:

Yes , updating bootloader is not the thing to do if you want to root, makes things difficult..
Bootloader number is written after G935FXX or G935FOJV after these terms its either S7 or U7 where 7 is bootloader version , 7 is the latest version.. the problem you cannot downgrade to a lower bootloader number firmware e.g 7 to 6 or 5..
Its easy to find the firmware details , use about > software information.. good luck..

Good luck !

Just so I understand, today latest official rom is on S8 not S7 right ? How is this compared to S7, same bad drain and performance as S7 ?
As a total noob,Im asking, can we revert to S6 somehow ? Isnt the bootloader something thats flashable with ODIN if you have the correct AP,BL,CP,CSC?

S8 binary if not worst, is the same as S7 one, same battery drains, even on a debloated stock rom..
And no you cannot revert to old binaries like s6 because bootloader cannot be downgraded..
But i read somewhere once that using bootloader and csc of new firmwares with ap and cp of older firmwares works (i never tested that myself so can't say if you could downgrade using this method)
The biggest problem of updating to a higher binary is that if that binary has serious issues like performance / battery drains then you couldnot downgrade to older binaries (no guaranteed methods) and oems sometimes cripple performance / introduce battery drains in older devices on purpose ..
Plus if your phone gets messed up, and you need combination binary to recover it then you are out of luck as latest combination binaries for s7 series are also not leaking into internet/or in general availability..

Interesting.. I dont understand anything about binaries but i will attempt to install the following firmware looking at updato for reference firmware, so i can download it from SamFirm in a attempt to downgrade bootloader to obtaint that battery life youre talking about. It seems like this is what I need right ? It has S6 after the XX name. Can you please confirm? Also how do i check my current bootloader version ?
This is what I will attempt to install
Country / Region Romania
PDA G935FXXS6ESI4
Product Code ROM
CSC G935FROM6ESI4
Phone G935FXXS6ESI6
Later edit 1:
Interesting, I cant find the XXS6 firmware, even tho i input the correct data in SamFirm. It keeps giving me S8

Later edit 2:
after much researching it seems like SamFirm will only provide the latest firmware there is for your phone, nothing older. Since updato download speed is still trash I ended up on a website called Samfrew that has the older firmwares available for download at decent speeds (40minutes instead of 12 hours)
Will attempt to flash this:
PDA/AP Version G935FXXS6ESI4
CSC Version G935FROM6ESI4
MODEM/CP Version G935FXXS6ESI6
Region ROM — Romania
Build Date 2019-09-17
Changelist 14843133
OS Oreo
OS Version 8.0.0
Later edit 3:
Yep, it failed.
Attempting now a combination of "using bootloader and csc of new firmwares with ap and cp of older firmwares works" but i dont know exactly which is important out of the bl ap cp csc to have as XXS6
Later edit 4:
Total failure, nothing works. I lurked the forums and google for 2 hours now, no one said it concrete how they did it.. Where did you find the information ?

Binaries are just another word for the firmware , binary number means the bootloader number which is after G935FXX which is 8 at the moment..
About that combination of using different parts.. yes i read that here on xda..
You cannot downgrade bootloader to a lower number, but they described how they used newer firmware bootloader and modem with older ap and csc..
Maybe try using older g935fxxs6 ap and cp and g935fxxs8 bl and csc..
Or using g935fxxs6 ap and csc and g935fxxs8 bl and cp
Or try with g935fxxs6 ap, csc and cp and g935fxxs8 bl
Or lastly try with 935fxxs6 ap and g935fxxs8 cp, csc and bl..
I still suspect this trick is not gonna work for newer firmwares..
Edit : use samfw for firmware downloads
Edit2 : samfirm only downloads latest firmware
