SPYWARE FIX ! Fixed Lag and Wi-Fi problems by cleaning up Spyware from Rooting - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 General

I'm rooted on stock N910VVRU2BPA1 with the Emotion-TW-5.1.1-nightly-r21-RC1-SM-N910P Kernel
I've been reporting that KingoRoot corrupted my phone. The symptoms were swipes lags, typing lag delays, Wi-Fi lags before it turns on and more problems. I fixed the performance problems and it is too good to be true. I went through a lot of trial and error but here is a synopsis of what I did.
I used Root Browser to change the name of every file and folder inside the efs folder. I just added a 1 to the end of the names so I could revert back if needed.
I rebooted the phone, went back to check the efs folder and it had regenerated everything I needed to keep. And it didn't load the junk files. The phone runs like it's using AdAway on steroids. give it a few minutes and it will rebuild the advertising host files. But the best part is it didn't load the spyware left behind by KingoRoot and KingRoot. That keyboard lag was probably spyware recording keystrokes and the lags navigating were probably due to conflicts between the Google host file and the spyware. I don't know for sure but Now, Even the ESPN website loads fast on Chrome. I just did this today so I'm still testing but I haven't got a phone solicitation since I've done this. I don't know if it's a side effect or what. But that would be great
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NEXT: I found a fix for the Wi-Fi lag turning on and the phone forgetting the Wi-Fi password. I went to esf/carrier/HiddenMenu and changed it from off to on. Then I used the app Phone Info Samsung to do a RTN reset from Secret Codes menu. My Wi-Fi is back to normal.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I actually did the Wi-Fi fix first, then after I seen it had corrected that problem I Odin back to N910VVRU2BPA1 re-rooted, Restored my TWRP backup data then I did what I'm calling the SPYWARE FIX.

But the best part is it didn't load the spyware left behind by KingoRoot and KingRoot. That keyboard lag was probably spyware recording keystrokes and the lags navigating were probably due to conflicts between the Google host file and the spyware.

Is there any evidence that Kingoroot installed spyware? I used it and haven't experienced any of the issues you've reported.

Very nice! Is this in relation to and correct your DM-Verification problem?
Also do you know what files do not need to be in that folder/subfolders? It looks like there is a bunch of junk in mine, especially the files with very long alpha-numeric strings, but I am not that familiar with how the folder works and what may not need to be there.

What is the RTN fix for WiFi? I see it listed in the app, but not sure what it will reset.
I've been using a Note 4 Dev Edition for the past year, rooted and running MOROM. My issue is that the WiFi connection will just disconnect for no reason and it will not show any WiFi devices unless I turn it off and then back on. I have to do this a few times a day.

I read that the RNT reset clears more personal information than a normal Factory Reset. I did it without a sim card inserted.
I fixed the performance problems but it still says DM Verification failure in stock recovery. That doesn't bother me. as long as the phone works.

I was just curious if there's anything specific in EFS that would indicate spyware from Kingoroot.

I did a test and even KingRoot puts junk in the efs folder. KingoRoot is what caused my DM Verification failure.
your mileage may vary

Are there any specific files that either KR or KoR place in the EFS folder? I'm not familiar enough with the folder and what should or shouldn't be in there, it looks fairly junked up on my device, but then again all the files I have in there could be legit and needed.
Maybe we could all contribute to am EFS Cleanup utility to prevent the spyware mess of this convoluted rooting process? Haha.

best day ever

This has been the best day ever as far as performance. I don't know what it was but I deleted something that was really slowing the phone down. I started with a phone that I was going to crush then make a warranty claim because it was operating so poorly. I don't need to do that now. For the record, I call some Google and Verizon software " Spyware " it was not just the rooting process. It would be interesting to find out what was in those junk files but I have seen no adverse effect by renaming them. Then after I seen they had been regenerated I made a backup copy then I deleted them.

I have went ahead and used this method of renaming all files and folders inside of EFS, and it regenerated most of the folders and everything, the most marked difference was inside the SFS folder, in my old renamed folder I had about 25 files with very long alpha-numeric strings, now I only have two files in there. Can I, after backing up just in case, get rid of all of the files/folders with the 1 at the end? Will leaving them in there do anything like slightly increase RAM use, or are they just there but dormant?

I wonder how much space is allowed in the efs partition. I ASSUME my TWRP backup could restore it if needed. Also I made a copy of the 1,'s then deleted them. I see no reason to look back. Life is good.
Do you feel the speed? I have re-deleted everything inside the efs folder several times. Every time it regenerates.
EDIT: Another benefit I,ve noticed is the time of the post is correct now on XDA before It always would show the wrong time for a post.

Hard to say it's not placebo, but actions on the phone actually feel a bit faster, for instance the animation for unlocking the phone seems to go at a quicker speed and an already slightly laggy game itself, Star Wars Heroes, seems to run somewhat better now.

I noticed after I deleted the files the phone asked me again for my preferences on some things and Googles targeted ads have gone away. And I haven't received phone solicitation since I've done this. I'm wondering if there was a file in there that was advertising my phone number.

So when doing the RTN Reset, you're phone is reset (like doing a factory reset) and you have to set up all your info, settings and apps in it again? If so, I would hold off doing that, as that would take me a lot of time. But I could still try the ESF folder trick and see if that helps. Since I have the Dev Edition, it is rooted without those King apps, so probably no spyware on it.

yes it is a factory restore but you can save a lot of time with the TWRP data backup. If you're not having any Wi-Fi problems I think I'd skip it

The only WiFi issue I have is that the phone will lose WiFi connectivity a few times a day and I have toggle it on and off. But the phone has done it on every ROM that I have tried, so it could be an issue with the hardware itself.
I did edit all the files and folders in the efs, and the phone is working a bit smoother. Before, the unlock screen was always slow and stuttering, but now it is smooth and fast.

I don't even know why any of this is working but it is. Use your own discretion.

After some more testing I had to undo the renaming of a few of the files and place them back in their original folders to fix VOLTE/Wifi Calling/Bluetooth that stopped working, can't find any other issues so far though.

It would be good to have a list but I've fixed two phones that I was ready to trash just by deleting everything. Last year I had Verizon remove HD calling from my account because my calls were more distorted with HD calling. I have a separate Google number and it works on Wi-Fi better than my Verizon number.
Although now with the Spyware fix my Verizon calls are clearer. And This is day three without a solicitation call. UNREAL

Nice! Is there a way to get VOLTE without turning on the HD Calling function? With it turned off my phone calls go to 1x mode and I can't do any data related functions while on the phone. Maybe something is messed up on my end configuration wise that only allows that functionality with it turned on?
Second note anyone have any idea what all the files in the SFS folder are? I had almost 20, now down to 4 and everything is working as it should.

A virus of somekind.

Hi XDA,
I was browsing the web (On my mobile) and opened a page with a .gif
Then saved this .gif cause it was funny one.
But the moment i did that my browser crashed.. (Opera 8)
I did not think much of this at this time.
This same day i notice i keep having too re-input my passes..
Even just now on XDA i had to input my pass again twice..
First i thought maybe its the internet. But i checked all that..
Now im concerned it might be a virus. Maybe picked up from that .gif?

Maybe it's a cookies problem
check your browser's settings.
maybe clear all history and cookies.
Thank you.
Checked all that. And yet i had to log in again..
The strange thing is it remembers my username/pass i just have to keep logging in again..
I also notice that im being logged out periodicly..
And the fact that i had to relog into my Gmail is starting to concern me.
I have never had to do that before..
If its hard to determen the cause, i would like to know if resetting my mobile
to its factory settings in the settings tab truly formats my whole mobile.
And removes any possible malware or viruses..

Performing a hard-reset to factory settings,
would most likely remove any malware (assuming the malware has no way to write itself into the device ROM).
BUT -
if restore a backup you restore a backup - it might restore the malware as well (if the backup was created after the infection).
I don't think that someone made a .gif file which makes opera buggy. Maybe Opera crashed because it had problems showing the page. This could be the reason why Opera has problems.
Removing opera and installing it again could solve this error.
By hard-reset and back-up you mean two different things?
Factory reset looks like overwriting it with back-up could that backup be infected and contain the virus is what you mean?
Thank you very much for your quick responses Some03ne
Very much appreciate
Edit: Thank you too header2k
Thats also what i initially thought.
But still i have these passes errors which is suspicious..
Opera is buggy indeed. I have a similar problem, on certain sites it will jsut ask me to log in everytime I visit. Don't think it's related with the gif thing.

Yes, Hard-Reset and backup are two different things.
Backup - is backing up your data and files, so it could be restored later.
Hard-Reset - deletes all data and leaves the device only with the programs/files that are included in the ROM/Factory settings.
If you perform Hard-Reset you would lose all your data.
If you perform a backup (before hard resetting) you have a copy of your data and can restore it after Hard-Reset.
But -
your situation now is problematic - if you perform backup now - you most likely will copy the problematic file, and it will get back on the device when you restore this backup.
i've got that same thing just yesterday
all my passwords in opera are deleted
plus my wifi key is deleted
but i don't think it's a virus because my HD2 is still very stable

[Q] MTP ruined 3.2

It's my birthday and the day of a big problem. So please assist ;-)
Been transfering movie files from PC to Tab via USB/MTP. The process was going fine until the last file to be copied. Then Tab lost connection. Reconnected the cable. Tried to copy the last file. Then Tab hung. Absolutely.
I disconnected USB cable and rebooted the TAB. It showed the Samsung animation, then "samsung" title, some gargabe at the bottom of the screen and .. that last forever.
Well, rebooted once again. Same situation, but screem garbage moved to top.
Well, 3rd reboot and .. whoa, eventually it booted!
But ... it asked me to introduce myself (e.g. enter e-mail, ...) and enter Google prefeences (just like with a fresh new tab). Skipped it (Hacker's keyboard was already not working - couldn't type in).
Then the desktop arrived. My God, it's absolutely brand new. All my settings and icons disappeared.
Went to Applications - they all seem to survive. But don't work. Almost all of them crash when you start them. Some very simple and built-in apps work though.
The Contacts disappear as well. Just like E-mail.
Remember I started this message with that I was transferring files? Well, they're not visible. Even their new folder is missing. But the storage is used exactly to the size of those files. All 10Gb. I tried to delete its parent folder (say, "/sdcard/Movies"). Free storage barely changed (only for the size of existing files).
Well, it's ruined. My lovely and so customized Tab. Damn.
So the very dumb questions are:
- What's that? Broken filesystem? How came? How to check/fix?
- How to save app settings (that's ALOT, include data for my kids' paid games)?
- Where Touch Wiz and other settings actually stored? I suspect there must be a system database (saw an error from "SQlite" when FBReader crashed).
Well, I could wipe everything, but not sure it would solve the filesystem problem and would take muuuuuuuuch time. And we don't have ICS rolled out for Russia yet, so that would be a very time wasting process.
p.s. Titanium backup doesn't start too. Moreover, everytime I install something it crashes again ;-)
You might try setting up your gmail account, the initial thing that you skipped. I'm just guessing, but perhaps you need the account active to use apps that might be linked to your account on the market.
Also, again, this is just a guess, but if your movies are DRM protected, is it possible you can't access because it thinks you are a different user?
Just some thoughts. Quite possibly useless, but maybe worth a shot. Good luck!
Later,
Jason
Go to settings/ apps and force stop Samsung Media Scanner... Worked on mine a while back, hopefully that will fix the problem for you... Good luck!

Something very similar happened to me when I was trying to watch a movie off of an sd card with the adapter. I ended up having to re-flash a stock image through Odin and re tweak everything (Rom, re-download apps...everything. Sucks that I lost all my progress in games etc. but it made me re-evaluate what apps I really used and needed so now it's running faster and smoother than ever. I even decided against using pershoot's overclocking kernel (for now) as everything feels so fresh and so clean, and it seems unnecessary.

Something got corrupted. It could have been app databases like you suggest. Sounds pretty reasonable. I hate to say it but you may want to hard reset and see if the issue persist. If it does persist after a hard reset then you have a defective device
Do you have a nandroid backup of your setup?

SD Card contents deleted

I have a Google Nexus 4. Most of my files on the "SD CARD" have been deleted mysteriously. I need help trying to recovery these if possible or figuring out why it happened so I can avoid it happening again and/or remove the app responsible.
I noticed the weather channel app crash multiple times and now my SD Card is more or less empty, the odd folder has survived. But all the useful stuff is gone, most of it is recoverable. A pop up box kept appearing saying the weather channel has crashed, roughly 30-40 times. I was connected to it via my laptop while browsing the contents, I was also doing the same on the phone, using the DiskUsage application to find where my space was being used.
Any help is much appreciated. The phone isn't rooted or anything and is only about a month old.

Try the app called Diskdigger to retreive missing data from Play. Requires root.
Thank you for the suggestion but no luck.
I needed to root the phone to get it to work and I needed wipe the phone before rooting. When I eventually got around to scanning after rooting it found only the cached images of current apps. I expected as much after wiping it again. Now I've un-rooted and re-installed the stock google image. Now I have an issue with my phone not picking up time and date setting from my service provided but that's a separate issue I can deal with by manually setting the time zone. Somehow my phone thinks I'm in Ireland. I'm from there but live in Australia.
Lesson learned. Backup regularly. Thanks.

This phone has no sdcard, all the memory is integrated into one so when you wipe data you wipe all data off the phone including personal stuff.
Yep that's why it's in quotes and Capitals, "SD CARD" . The first line anyway.
The whole phone seems to be acting up a bit now. Previously, before the "SD CARD" was wiped any pictures on the "SD CARD" would appear in the gallery unless I had used a .nomedia folder or file but now it only appears to pickup pictures in the camera folder, screenshot pictures and picasa web photos. Even thought I have several other albums in the "SD CARD"/Pictures folder where the screenshots folder is.
I have the following folders on the "SD CARD"
/Pictures/Screenshots
/Pictures/FamilyPics
/Pictures/PartyPics
/Pictures/HousePics

All 113 other photos are visible when browsing the contents while the phone is connected to my laptop and when using a file browser on the phone. And I can open these pics with the Gallery app through the file explorer without any issue.
None of my videos in /Video are visible either and are accessible as with the pictures I'm having issues with.
I've tried clearing the App Cache and data and rebooting the phone but getting me nowhere.

All Pictures disappeared from gallery?

Like the title says, my wife is pretty upset. I got us both new unlocked s8+'s from best buy just prior to our cross country trip with our kids.
No SD card installed.
She took 200+ pictures and today they are gone. Only videos remain in the gallery, in my files, or even using a file explorer.
I called Samsung, waste of my time.
Google drive is the only cloud app being used (for documents), pics aren't there.
Any advice or thoughts? I've seen older posts on forums of this happening on android phones and not of the fixes have worked. (Clear cache, search for and remove .nomedia files)
Thanks,
Dave

Samsung has a junk file cleaner so you can get rid of unnecessary files. Your wife might have accidentally included her photos while getting rid of unnecessary files. You can ask her about this but besides that I don't know why the photos are lost (probably due to hardware error).

I'll ask her but I don't think k she did, it still says it can recover 1.5+gigs of space.
I used one of them file digger apps, I was able to retrieve all the smaller 200kb cached pictures from thumbnails and what not, but from what I've read you need root to recover the full size images...
There are a lot of stories of this happening to people when I search it and all different devices. So I hope it's not hardware. SD card going in and Google photo backup being turned on, just like the data thieves wanted us to do in the first place.....

If internal then she must have done something, if pics dissapear from sdcard its most like corrupt, best is to have that when u take pics it automatically syncs to a cloud service for backup.

3 Questions
What gallery app are you using? Did she hide or exclude any folders by accident?
Thirdly, try running a recovery programme. You can get for free on the net. So long as she has taken no further photos or put anything else on hard drive should be able to recover.
Finally check all folders on phone and also check camera app settings to ensure the folder they are saving too is correct.
This issue is not exclusive to the S8 and looking around the internet this is an existing yet unsolved issue on certain Samsung devices. I'll post here to add a bit of extra information.
My mom's Note 4 also had the same exact issue where the pictures just flat out disappeared. (Pictures, videos, screenshots). No traces of it in any folders even with a different file browser. Issue happens again and again with no pattern or known cause. I told her to buy an SD card for it this time so if it did happen again, I have full access to the storage medium. I then set the camera to save to the SD card and let her use it as usual. Guess what, the problem happened again today.
This time I took the SD card, popped it into my PC and ran Recuva recovery. I was able to recover a few intact pictures and videos from it.

No root available for S8 yet so none of the recovery tools work, your photos are really gone, that's so sad.
Suggest keep your Google photos sync on and regular backup of your entire phone with Samsung Smart Switch PC version.
See if this help to recover photos from Samsung Galaxy S8+.
Why do you need root to access recovery programme?

Exactly. I've tried multiple gallery apps, file explorers and android file recovery programs (which all end up requiring root).
I don't know why root is required to access the non-root folders for a deep scan, but they do.
I was hoping there was a way with ADB that I could make a copy on the computer to then scan, but I think it's probably a waste of time now.
And yes, it was internal storage like everyone days.
I'm hesitant to use any of the cloud backup programs because of some the vulnerabilities I don't agree with. We don't even put pictures of our kids on Facebook. Which is the most secure and least likely that I'm "agreeing to allow them to use the pictures for anything", because most programs say that in the TOS.
FOR NOW, we put an sd card in. If this seems to be a software issue, should we reset her phone or reflash the unlocked firmware with odin? I wonder if a specific app could be related to it.
I convinced her to not return the pho e, but now I'm not sure it's worth keeping if it's possible to happen again.

You guys can try a factory reset. I am actually going to observe this phenomenon happen. Also my mom doesn't like loosing her game saves. I told her to copy her pictures and videos frequently to her laptop in case it happens again (and it will happen again).

Try the below app from play store. This can help you setup an easy and automated backup to a local computer or a NAS.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=sweesoft.sweethome
The app can be set to auto backup on connection to the home wifi or when connected to the charger and your home wifi at the same time.

Root is now out on the S8 (snapdragon) variant so you may still be able to recover them if you haven't found a fix :good:
Galaxy S8 photos vanished
Many thanks for this post. I suffered from exactly same problem yesterday. This is the first time ever I had this problem with Samsung. I have been user of Samsung S2, S5 and now S8.
I am extremely disappointed that one of the most expensive mobiles has caused this problem. I am going to contact samsung about it because many important picture files lost.
The only precipitant was that my battery completely drained out yesterday and when I turned it on there was loss of photos last from three days.
This is completely unacceptable service from such an expensive mobile. I am very upset. My camera photos gets saved in SD card and are backed up by samsung cloud as well as in google drive.
Please help me with suggestions to recover the lost data.
Samsung s8 plus issues lossing pictures
Thought samsung is the best of the best in phones software and the rest all in one phone but clearly I was wrong I lost loads of pictures on my samsung s8 I sold yesterday and my samsung s8 plus now doing the same thing to lost 100plus pics to I'm going sell this one it's my contract phone but I don't care I just carry on paying it off but I get better phone then this that I can trust....best ones are Vodafone platinum 7 and Vodafone v8 so far are the best phones money can buy reliable to and trustworthy..... samsung makers are in software they need to do better much more improvements to
Please help me.
My problem was: suddenly my pictures disappeared from the Samsung Gallery App, but they do exist on several folders for ex. DCIM/Camera. Why arent they appearing inside Samsung Gallery? I did nothing different than what I usually do... I am so mad about this! I even did factory reset and I still cant see my pictures on Samsung Gallery
Same issue here. Just moved over from iPhone.
I've noticed that so far the pics affected have been in their own albums. One was hidden and one wasn't. 1 photo remains from the one that wasn't hidden. I think it only remains because I had texted the pic to someone.
Internal storage.
Developer Mode On.
Auto Update Off.
Have connected phone to a PC via USB prior to issue.
Images don't show in the file folders when I browse them from the My Files app, either. They're gone.
The other odd thing is this may have only started after changing this device name in About Phone.
Anyone else have a changed device name?
You guys should sync with Google Photos!

Trying to recover deleted "Gallery" folder from S8

Hello everyone
I'm sorry to be a pain but I'm having a bit of trouble.
I accidentally deleted my "Gallery" folder from my phone and had not set up a Cloud backup ie Google Photos, Samsung Cloud etc.
I tried several recovery programs however they could recover various stuff but not the Gallery folder or its contents (approx. 2000 photos)
Some of the software said I needed to root my phone which I did and then ran recovery again, but none of them found anything.
Doing more research, I am trying to go down the route of extracting the RAW data from the phone to look at it that way using ADB but I am pretty much stuck trying to find the folder or data in the phone.
Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas? Or should i resign myself to the fact I have lost my photos and put it down to my error?
Im not overly tech savvy, so if you do have a idea, please be gentle, Layman's terms
Anyway, Thanks you in advance and have a beautiful day
Tony
I have faced similar situations earlier, but everytime I have managed to recover atleast 70% of the images using the following apps.
* DiskDigger (by Defiant Tech)
* Undeleter Recover Files & Data (By Fahrbot PRI)
These two apps are far best (as per my experience) to get the job done.
Try and see if it works for you. Best of Luck.

I will also vouch on these I have used them to recover some photos before the key here is to quit using the device as soon as possible so those data locations of the pictures are not over wrote. If it is soon enough they still may be there,Under the marked for deletion state

Hi OP - How did this work out for you? Also I am in the exact same situation but I do not have my device rooted.. Any advice on a solid guide to root my device? Were/are you able to unroot the device later?
