[SCRIPT] Debloat HTC 10 - HTC 10 Themes, Apps, and Mods

Although HTC 10 comes with less bloat than most other phones, it still has apps preinstalled that some of us probably will never use.
Some of those apps may even run at boot and consume RAM and CPU. For this purpose I made a small script that will remove those apps instead of doing it manually via ADB Shell.
This script is for Mac/OS X/macOS. I think it can also run on Linux but I'm not sure because I don't use Linux much.
For Windows, it can easily be ported to command line. If someone is willing to do it, PM me the script and I will add it to the repo.
Apps that the script removes:
Boost+
Google+ Sense Add-on
Instagram (placeholder app)
LinkedIn Sense Add-on
HTC Mail
Facebook (placeholder app)
Messenger (placeholder app)
News Republic
TouchPal Keyboard (SEE NOTE!)
Twitter Sense Add-on
Voice Recorder
Zoe
HTC Help
IceView Case support
HTC Speak
Transfer my stuff
Google Hangouts
Google Play Music
Basically what the script does:
Mount /system as RW
Delete above apps .apk and containing folder
Reboot after done.
DISCLAIMER: Although I don't see what could possibly go wrong by flashing this script, be sure to back up your ROM before flashing as I don't take any responsibility caused by this script. I have tested it on my HTC 10 and I didn't have any issues.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you plan to remove TouchPal keyboard, make sure that you have an alternative already installed before or you won't be able to type any text. In case you're reading this after you already screwed up, download your prefered keyboards .apk file and install it via ADB. The script will stop before removing the keyboard and ask if you are sure you want to remove it.
How to:
Enable USB debugging
Connect your phone
Execute "adb shell" and then "su" and grant superuser access to adb shell
(OS X) make script executable (chmod a+x)
Run script
I am open for suggestions and merge requests, happy debloating
The script can be found HERE.

Hoping someone works on the windows version cause i suppose totally run this.
Thanks for sharing

All this can be manually removed simply by hitting uninstall with root access right? Not knocking the script, just asking honestly.

Just double checking, but I take it that root is required?

Ive tried some apps for removal of system apps but it didn't work. And since I play around with ROMs reinstalling and uninstalling app by app takes just to much time.

Yes, you need root because you need to remove apps from the read-only /system partition.

Got it. Thanks for the reply. I haven't had an htc phone since gingerbread and I mostly had Samsungs on Verizon so I never bothered rooting. I didn't get my 10 yet but I hope to root right away and get rid of things I think are bloat. Probably gonna need this script I guess we'll see. Thanks again!

will you make it for windows please?

@gillim74 @razrlover @dj_chapz
I have made a working copy for windows and added it to a fork of the gitlab repo here: https://github.com/ibrokemypie/htc_10_pme_debloat/blob/master/htc10_bloat_remover.cmd
I will maintain this as long as @dj_chapz does and will pull in any changes he makes.

I usually make changes after a firmware update if I notice any new bloat, but there shouldnt be much changes.
Also, this list is by personal preference, because some apps that I choose to leave others may want to remove or vice versa, so everyone should take the script as a base and edit to their likeing.

After running this (windows), and going into Settings > Apps, I get a Loading screen that never ends. Same thing in Titanium backup when it tries to build a db of the installed apps.

nougat,
oh it did work o.o saw the apps for a second, thank you! could i just add the sense apks into the script and remove it the same way?

Dare I ask... why not make a shell script you run from the phone? I'll give it a shot. I wrote one that creates directories so I can use FolderSync to restore settings from the cloud.

Phone Security

I am having a problem with the security apps on the market like "MobileDefense", "SIM Checker" and so on. They are all great apps but can be easily uninstalled through the market with a little looking around. So what I need is to know how to install the .apk in /system. So basicly I figure that I need to move the .apk to "/system/app" so it is running in the system and cannot be uninstalled via market. So what I need would be the terminal commands to do this if anyone knows. Further more I was wondering if it would also be possible to go in and rename the .apk in "/system" to something like "systemapp.apk" to confuse the person trying to uninstall the app if they happen to stumble upon the manage applications section. Any help would be appreciated!
You can uninstall system apps too.
Yes but not as easy as going into the market and uninstalling. Is there any way to do what I am talking about in the first post? Btw I love your Rom.
Just go to Settings/applications there are the systemapps too...

Actually the Settings application manager cannot uninstall applications in /system. /system is supposed to be read-only on stock Android builds.
Installing something into /system/app is easy. Just install the app normally from the Market, then open your adb or Terminal emulator, remount system, and cp the file from /data/app into /system/app. After, rm the original copy. The downside is you won't be able to update the app from the market.

IIRC, this won't work anyways since they application will be reinstalled but your settings will not? Am I wrong? A wipe will still kill the application's usefulness even if it were built into the ROM.
Is there a way to setup a program default (your settings) so that short of installing an entirely new ROM, you keep your settings???

This is a good point; I hadn't thought about the matter of the settings. I have not installed any tracking/retrieval software before so I don't know how they specifically work, but it is theoretically possible for them to work without configuring any settings. It depends on whether the software needs to log into a remote server, but from what I gather some simply act on a sms message. If the action to take is already set by default then there should be no problems. However like I said I have no experience with any actual apps of this sort.

Even with a text message, it would need to be "set" for a default number. Mobile Defense however does use a central server to log into.
Hmm... Is there a way to pull the IMEI from the phone and use THAT as a login??? Then if it were to be incorporated with the phone's ROM, it would be pretty difficult to remove it and not have it send data to the proper people.
Just randomly throwing out ideas here, so pardon my ignorance

[Q] Removing apps that came with CM6

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this. Feel free to move it.
I am wondering how to remove some things that came with CM6 when I installed it. When I go to applications > manage applications I cannot delete anything other than the things I've installed. Here is a list of things that I want to delete.
Amazon mp3
The stock browser
Stock Camera
stock messaging
stock music player
Google Talk
Google Voice
All the wallpapers
Home screen tips
I don't have a use for any of these and would rather free up the space and keep down the clutter from things I don't use.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=735255
*************** NOTE ***************
Removing some of these may cause instability/FC issues with your phone. Just fair warning.
***
After reading that thread; the files you need to delete are... (located in System/App)
com.amazon.mp3.apk
Browser.apk
Camera.apk
(Not sure about messaging - might be mms.apk)
music.apk
talk.apk
I'm not totally sure about the others.
deleting mms.apk will remove your ability to receive texts. i know cause i tried to replace it with handcent at one point. removing music and amazon should be fine.
Thanks for the replies. I'm gonna try to remove the Amazon mp3 and Music now. What do you think would happen if I move the apps to my SD card and then access and delete them from my computer? Does this run the same risk of instability issues? In theory, I should be able to back them up on my computer and restore them if things go wrong, agree?

Here's what I did along with some instructions from attn1. (he's the best!) Maybe this information will be helpful to someone. I am running CM6 A012 on my phone.
I booted up the Ubuntu LiveCD that I used to root my phone.
Rebooted my phone into Clockwork Recovery... power & volume down > wait for system check > Recovery
Once in ClockWork Recovery I linked my phone via USB to my computer and clicked 'partitions menu' then 'mount /system'
I accessed the terminal in Ubuntu and I couldn't get permissions to access the phone's files
In terminal, attn1 had me type the following commands before I could access the app list.
1) echo $PATH
2) sudo su
3) cd /opt/android-sdk-linux_86/tools
4) ./adb kill-server
5) ./adb remount
After that, to list the apps type: ./adb shell ls -l /system/app
To remove apps type: ./adb shell rm /system/app/filename.apk
To check if they're removed type: ./adb shell ls /system/app/filename.apk
I removed Music.apk, com.amazon.mp3.apk, and Browser.apk. When trying to remove Gmail.apk, Ubuntu wouldn't let me do anything else. I am assuming that the LiveCD has a time limit on it for the trial version. I then unmounted my phone on ClockWork and the rebooted it. The apps that I removed are gone from my phone and everything related to them still works fine.
Here is a link I used to find out which .apk files were safe for removal. http://forum.sdx-developers.com/android-2-1/(list)-apk's-and-odex's-safenot-safe-to-delete/
I will do some more research and try to remove other .apk files in a couple hours. I didn't try the 'move to SD' method that I mentioned above and would still like someone's opinion on it.
I forgot to mention. It's probably best to do a nandroid back up before doing all this. I didn't do one that time and will do it next time. I will also leave a list of everything I removed for future reference. If anyone else has a list, I would appreciate seeing that. This is my first time doing all this so I am constantly bugging attn1 for knowledge.
It didn't seem right to complain about AT&T bloatware, but still have to deal with the apps cyanogen installed.
Correct me if I am wrong. I did it this way and so far haven't found any issue YET. BTW, I didn't delete mms.apk though. Use Winrar (or other programs, not tested) to open cm6-liberty-A0xx-signed.zip. Navigate to system/app and then remove the apk files from there. Close winrar and install the modified cm6-liberty-Axxx-signed.zip like normal. It saves me a lot of time dealing with adb.

You know, that's a much easier idea. Even testing by taking one .apk out at a time would be faster, I think. And my Winrar is expired and it still let's remove files! I would just have to remember to save a backup on the .zip before and after removing each .apk.
Anthony1s said:
1) echo $PATH
Not required. Only had you do that because I knew shad0wf0x put the tools in the path, but didn't know exactly where. Just made it easier for moving there once you did the next step.
2) sudo su
3) cd /opt/android-sdk-linux_86/tools
Required.
4) ./adb kill-server
Not required - only had you do it because the server was initially started from the regular user account and wasn't connecting properly.
5) ./adb remount
After that, to list the apps type: ./adb shell ls -l /system/app
To remove apps type: ./adb shell rm /system/app/filename.apk
To check if they're removed type: ./adb shell ls /system/app/filename.apk
This is fine....

FYI there is no expiration on the Ubuntu LiveCD. If it stopped working for you, it was for some other reason.
Thanks for correcting that attn1. I haven't tried to do anything further yet, but will after a nap. Does anyone know if you edit the ROM in Winrar, do you have to sign it or w/e?

When I modified both of N1 and Aria CM rom, I don't have to sign it again.
Ok here is the basics of what I did. I didn't modify the CM .zip from my computer because I thought it would take more time to nandroid backup and reflash the ROM. If I install a new ROM, I am more likely to do that. I loaded the Ubuntu LiveCD and proceeded with what I was doing before. I still had to put in every command that attn1 taught me.
Here is a list of everything I removed.
- Music.apk Successful. No problems.
- com.amazon.mp3.apk Successful. No problems.
- Browser.apk Successful. No problems.
- Gmail.apk Successful. No problems.
- CMWallpapers.apk Successful. No problems.
- LiveWallpapers.apk Successful. No problems.
- MagicSmokeWallpapers.apk successful except the 'Many' live wallpaper option doesn't load without this. I didn't care cause I was getting rid of all of them.
- LiveWallpapersPicker.apk Deleting this changes some things. When you go to menu >wallpaper it takes me directly to Astro File Manager instead of the wallpaper menu. I can still access and change my wallpaper though the Gallery app
I didn't remove Camera.apk because I read somewhere that it will mess up your camera even if you have another app install. I also didn't remove any Google apps yet. I might try those any other day. They aren't bothering me right now.
I was thinking about moving my nandroid backup to my computer to save space, but I didn't. I realized that if my SD is full, I won't have space on it to move it back when I needed it.
Thanks for all the tips.

For Music, I'm using Mixzing. For Browser, I'm using Dolphin HD. For E-mail, I'm using K9. For Messaging, I'm using Handcent. For Camera, I have a bunch of different apps.
I heard that your camera and messaging won't work without the 'Camera' and 'Messaging' that are currently on the phone. I'm assuming that your email won't work without the 'Email'. I deleted Gmail without any problems though. All the rest that I removed were just Wallpapers that came on the phone. I can pull up the wallpapers that I want from gallery still.
I don't think I freed up much memory space. My main concern was to get all those 'Music' widgets off my widget list and make everything else less cluttered.
So you can still get and send email from your email account after removing gmail or do you have to buy/download another email client. I am trying to figure out the differences between the gmail and email apps at the moment. The email app seems to have changed in Froyo to something less than it was. Are you using the standard "email" app after you delete gmail app?

I think I read somewhere that Skyfire is meant to run on top of the default browser, kind of like an add-on.
For the stock browser, download cm6 and unzip it. Then go into the unzipped file >system>app>browser.apk. Just push Browser.apk to /system/app on your phone via adb and you're good to go.
EDIT: just realized you might not be running cm6. Not sure if theres a difference between the browser in cm6 and the one from the stock rom. If there is a difference you just follow the same procedure from whichever rom you're running.

( Q) easier way to run a batch of applications back on the n1

hello n1 users, had a question i was hoping someone can help me with. im constantly putting new roms into my nexus one and with the almost daily updates, im getting tired of wiping and running a batch of applications on titanium backup back onto the phone. Right now i just check the boxes next to the app i want installed back onto the phone from a list of backed up apps but it requires me to press "install" and "done" after every single app installs. is there a method you guys use where you can push a button and it loads up all the apps at once that you backed up and wont require me to push "install" and "done" after each app ?
In Titanium, select menu, then batch, then restore all...
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
thats what i do already but as it puts each backed up app it asks me "install" and then "done".....pretty much i'd like it to be able to walk away from my phone as it restores instead of confirming each app restore.
I think the paid version overcomes this issue. The free version has you confirming after every install.
Sent from my Nexus One
oh ok, got it, thank you imperial. that alone is worth the 6 bucks and a tedious task. i shall make the purchase. thanks again guys
If you want to restore app data as well as your apps, Titanium Backup is your best option. If you want to install the apps only, use a file manager like Astro to back up all apks, save them to your computer, and when you're ready to install them, navigate to the folder in which all the apps are saved and run the command
Code:
adb install *.apk

[STICKY][Patch][Rom]Malware Exploit for all pre-Gingerbread devices

Who is affected? All devices pre-gingerbread
Who should act? Users and developers using pre-gingerbread roms
How do I fix? Flash attached .zip at the bottom of this post
What if I think I was infected? Completely wipe your device, format sdard, go back to stock and re-apply rom, then flash the attached .zip (before installing any apps)
Why should I care? read below...
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...your-phone-steal-your-data-and-open-backdoor/
Flash this with ClockWorkMod.... this is for any Pre Gingerbread ROM.... ie TNT anything, VEGAn 5.1.1 and below, Zpad anything, GAdam anything.
This is not necessary for any ROMS based off Gingerbread AOSP or CM7. Including VEGAn-TAB Experimentals.
Be Safe.
Even More Details here: http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...-android-nightmare-and-weve-got-more-details/
I checked out the zip and it just adds a blank text file (0 bytes) called profile to the /system/bin folder. So I am not sure what the fix is?
**EDIT** Nevermind it is a dummy file meant to prevent the virus. Thanks to the OP for providing this.

I'd curious to see what all the vendors are going to do about this. Granted, they could just say that the Market is not there, but regardless the security hole is still there and needs to be plugged up.
Hi,
I hope that this isn't too offtopic, but I was trying to create /system/bin/profile using a term and su, and when i went into root explorer to make /system/bin R/W, root explorer showed the dir as R/W already, and as mounted on /dev/loop9.
Is that normal?
I haven't installed dataloop, at least intentionally, so it seems strange that /system/bin would be mounted there, plus it being R/W by default?
FYI, I use z4root to get temp root. Could that be why /system/bin is R/W?
Then again, that wouldn't explain the /dev/loop9 mount ...

Hi,
Creating the profile file manually, it wouldn't persist,i.e., it was gone after rebooting, so I installed gojimi's zip usung CWM, and that worked.
I also did a mount w/o getting temp root, and /system/bin is not on /dev/loop9, so I'm guessing that when z4root sets temp root, it might be remounting /system/bin on /dev/loop9 itself.
Jim
You would have to download one of those sketchy apps to really be affected anyways, right? Who would do that?!
Appreciate the patch. This highlights the two problems with android though, google fixed this security issue in 2.2.2, but most carriers still haven't released that update. And the market needs some oversight, not authoritarian apple like, but some.

If infected what is preferred to do wipe the tablet or go back to stock rom??
Is there any manual for windows 7 noobies users?

Is there any manual for windows 7 noobies users?
Thanks.

Please read the thread completely, it is stated you can download lookout security to run a scan to see if you are infected.
downloading.....see what happens
There is a DroidDreamKiller app that allows you to check to see if you are already infected and install the patch. There is also a beta test app that gives you other information. Just search the market for DroidDreamKiller.
To devs: Thank You

What have you guys done with your rooted ZTE Blade ZMAX?

After a year since the release, the ZTE Blade Zmax is finally able to be rooted . I want to know, what have you guys done so far with your rooted devices? Any custom tweaks, used a cheat engine, etc? Have you looked into any custom ROMs that may possibly work for this phone? Comment below what you have done so far. Me personally, I tweaked my battery a lot and did a little modification to my kernel. With both magisk and xposed, I have been able to do a lot so far, but I want to do more. That is why I am curious to know cool things that you guys have done so far.
Removed SO much bloat, did the usual magisk modules, used SystemUI Tuner to make some visual changes in the statusbar, and noticed how heavily ZTE modified the system all the way down to the weather app. Currently looking into decompiling and recompiling the systemui to remove the annoying top left carrier wasn't successful in the first attempt so going at it again.

Interesting. What type of bloatware did you remove? ANy app specific used for that? For the last couple of days, I have been trying to change the boot animation. After may methods and attempts, it serves as no avail, so likewise to you, we both have things we are trying to accomplish. Hopefully, all goes well. Keep me updated on your status.

Facebook, metrozone, chrome, few other I can't remember. No app just deleted them from /system/(priv-)app via recovery.
For the bootanimation I found a megathread under Android customization, grabbed the zip for the animation I wanted, rebooted to recovery, setenforce 0 via adb, renamed the old bootanimation.zip to old.zip just in case, then pushed the zip to /system/media and rebooted.

Im going to try that, hopefully, it works. Why did you remove chrome though? Do you find other browsers better? I personally have good experience with chrome. Im trying to do as much tweaks as possible with the device itself, but I done so much already, Im confused on what else there is to do
Update: Bootanimations only work with soft reboots. Im looking for a way to have my custom boot when I hard reboot my phone.

I find Via much faster and love the customization. Chrome removal that was less about bloat and more about something I'll never use and if I ever do decide to use it or Facebook again it's available in the play store.
Not sure what you mean about boot animations I believe they're loaded and appear each time the system is booted regardless of hard/soft boot (assuming you're not going to recovery mode obviously)

Well, I use the app quick reboot that allows me to boot into recovery, quick restart, or full restart, etc. When I quick reboot, it will show my custom boot animation I downloaded, but when I full reboot, it shows the default metropcs screen which is annoying in my opinion. Maybe because I set my phone in permissive mode using Terminal and not adb
Well anyway, I'm still going to try and fix this because I hard reboot my phone a lot and I just dont wanna see that metro pcs screen anymore. Also, am I the only blade user whose power button does not know how to function I am really about to take this phone apart because my power button seems impossible to work unless I hold it a certain way, and its been like this for a while and I just dont understand why.
Ive spent over a year trying to make a gps spoofing app work on this phone.
Root really didnt help but twrp did.
Moved the app from /data/app to /system/priv-app
then I chmodded the folder and base.apk to 777
additionally I chowned the folder and base.apk to root:root

Bro! Not sure if you read the post I made on the other thread, but actually one of my reasons for rooting was achieving a "working" Spoofing method.
Rooting and moving app to system kind of works, but there it a better way and actually works great on this phone.
Just download Smali Patcher 0.0.4.2 from this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/module-smali-patcher-0-7-t3680053 (Thx to F0mey)) and follow the ADB method (Options 1 and 4),
then just flash the generated magisk module,
install your prefered spoofing app (Im using Ninja's) - **Remember to clone**
set as Mock Location
Everything unchecked on Spoof App (I just leave the distance info one on Ninja's app)
Enjoy!

im going to try this. Question, what were your reasons for spoofing? Why did you want to achieve this with root?
