Charging Galaxy S7 (Edge) - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Hi,
I'm currently looking for a new phone. I find the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge very interesting en beautiful devices, but I have one question where I cannot find an answer for through Google. With my current phone (Galaxy S3), after a few months the charging was going very slow. I know it is a common problem for a lot of phones. The solutions provided by internet: get a high quality adapter/cable, turn the device off while charging, use a battery saver app etc. etc.) are not reliable and/or expensive solutions. I see a little improvement if I use another cable/adapter but the only good permanent fix I had for this issue is using the boeffla kernel with a parandroid ROM. In this kernel I can configure a fixed charge current en I can ignore unstable power (so the phone doesn't negotiate with the poweradapter about how much current it takes, the phone takes just the current I set). I know it could probably damage the poweradapter/phone battery, but I'm willing tot take this risk when I can charge my device always quick, no matther where I charge my phone and with what cable/adapter.
Back to the S7 (Edge). If I google for "slow charging S7" I see lots of people that have problems with charging, simaler as I discribed above about my Galaxy S3. I know the Galaxy S7 (Edge) has quickcharge 2.0 support, but that only works with quickcharge enabled poweradapters. And for example, if I need to charge the phone in my car or with my powerbank (that doesn't support quickcharge), and probably even after a few months with the standard cable/poweradapter that comes with the device, I'm afraid charging wil go very slow again.
So my question is: Is there an solution to set also a fixed charging current for the Galaxy S7 / Galaxy S7 Edge? I'm planning to root my phone and I'm probably going to install a custom ROM, so I don't mind installing a custom ROM/kernel as long as it's stable.
Regards,

I have had my s7 edge since it was released here in the uk and I can tell you that it charges at the same speed and time as it did the first day I got it. I have not experienced any slow down . The only thing I have experienced is that the battery is lasting longer after each update the s7 edge recieves. It takes about 1 hour and 30 mins for my s7 edge to charge up from 5 percent.

Ok, thanks for your message! Well, I guess I'm going to buy the phone and hope that charging the device quickly won't be a problem.

Battery issue and possible replacement?

Short version: I'm looking at getting a Galaxy Tab 10.1 on Verizon which has a battery issue. According to the current owner, the battery only holds a 20% charge. My question is twofold. One, is there any chance this is a software or battery calibration problem that is fixable? The GT 10.1 seems a bit young for the battery to actually have worn down to that point.
Two, assuming it's not fixable, does anyone here have experience with replacing the battery? I've looked over the teardowns, and seen the type of battery pack it uses, but I haven't seen direct replacements available on eBay.
It's still under warranttee, why not have Samsung fix it?
Agree with Tabguy. Verizon version of the 10.1 tab is young in the tooth so I would think that if there was an issue with the device hardware wise the warranty would cover that. That the owner is selling it despite this is concerning IMO. If it were me selling it I'd at least go through the effort of having it serviced under warranty so as to not pass the problem on to someone who wouldn't be able to fix it. Perhaps they are a 2nd owner though.
From what I know, the Verizon version of the tab also hasn't had any custom ROMs that would have messed with the battery requiring calibration. I own one of these tabs and have flashed a few things including AOKP builds with no impacts to battery calibration. So unless the owner flashed something that us other Verizon owners haven't it's unlikely a calibration issue.
Just a heads up that the Verizon version differs on ROM support so right now you're stuck on Honeycomb 3.2 at best if you need LTE data until the ICS build is released by Samsung/Verizon or a developer develops the LTE modem support for the ICS builds floating around. If you don't need LTE data right now you're better off getting a wifi tab and passing on this one.
They may well be the second owner, I'm not sure. It's disappointing that the warranty doesn't follow the tab. But still, if it is fixable it'd be a great deal.

definitely is fixable...i opened mine up and its just removing some screws and a cable and popping the new one in...now just to find a battery
EDIT: FOUND IT FOR YOU! http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-SP...701630?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item2eba3799be
Gotta love this forum!
Indeed. Now sounds like an opportunity for him to grab a tab on the cheap and repair the battery himself. I'd lowball the price and see if the owner takes it.
Okay, so I got my hands on this thing. I haven't extensively tested it's battery capacity yet, but that's mostly because it came without the Samsung charger, just the standard USB cable. Without the Samsung 2 amp USB charger, even charging off a 1 amp supply it's nearly impossible to charge the thing. I left it plugged in for 24 hours and it's still only up around 75%. Which actually makes me wonder if that was the previous owner's problem, that they were charging it off a low current source which wasn't able to really supply the battery.
Either way, I need a 2 amp USB power supply. Does anyone happen to know if a generic one will do just as well, or is the Samsung charger wired specially for the GTab?
Sooo.... it's looking more and more like the former owner of this thing was simply a moron. And I'm not saying that just because he didn't even bother to delete his GMail account, password, and browser history of black porn and online gambling before selling the tablet to me.
Connected to a low-amperage charger, it managed to trickle-charge up to 98% before I unplugged it and started playing. That was a little over two hours ago, and two hours of solid use on Verizon 3G later, it's declining at a steady 10% per hour. So absent anything else ridiculous happening, I'm pretty much ready to call this a case of PEBKAC.

Before buying a second original Samsung 2A charger on occasion I have used a friend's "generic" 2A charger while away from home (the stock one is behind furniture and connected to the Samsungh desktop dock and was too much hassle to get), so a "generic" 2A one will do but seeing as it's not that easy to find good 2A ones and seeing that the Samsung original one is cheap enough I would simply buy an original charger (which IIRC also comes with a USB cable which may come handy).
(Availabilities and prices refer to Italy, the situation may of course be different where you live)

[Q] Latest firmware charging rate limit

Hi I have been viewing these forums for a long time now and wondering if any of you good guys could answer my question since I've searched google from top to to bottom with no joy .
Basically, I recently updated my firmware through odin to the latest xxubmea that incudes several fixes including the copy to sd option. As far as the performance goes etc everything is fine except, I was adoment the charging speed had got a lot slower. To prove this I downloaded 'galaxy charging current'. It was as I thought only showing 1200mah through the stock 2a charger while using the device. I then turned the screen off and noticed when I turned it back on you could just catch a glimpse of a 1900mah reading before dropping to 1200mah again. Further to this I decided to pop around my mates who is still on the original firmware and to my shock was recieveing the full 1900mah when using his device. It now appears that Samsung have physically limited the charge rate of the s4 by nearly half and in my eyes it's very noticeable. Now when I am getting ready to go out and have the radio streaming the battery life won't charge anywhere near as much as before meaning my battery is most flat by the end of the night.
I know one way of getting it to charge at full speed again is to just flash the old version again since I have folder mount and never really had many noticeable problems with it anyway.
Does anybody know why Samsung would have reduced this current? Since the speed it charged was a big bonus for me.
Also does anybody know anyway I can get it to charge at 1900mah in use by flashing a kernel or changing a particular setting or downloading an app etc?
Many thanks
Lee
are you really you sure that what you saw in your friend's S4 is correct? afaik charging rate will normally go down if you are using the phone
try other charge monitoring software such as battery monitor widget

On MEA (Omega 5.0) or even MF4 (Omega 6.0) software i was able to get 1900mA charging no probs, but now on Omega 7.0 XXUBMF8 i get only 1200mA. I`ve tried it on stock and custom kernels so the problem exists
Samsung limited the charging to 1200 when screen is on.
Screen off is still 1900.
This will limit overheating while using your phone with the charger connected.
Want the battery to charge faster, just leave the phone with the screen off.

S7 edge same battery defect as Note 7?

I noticed that there have now been reports of the S7 and S7 edge exploding in the same way the note 7 has even giving a guy 3rd degree burns. This got me thinking about the two s7 edges I've had and the quality control issues that may be plaguing our devices as well. My first s7 edge had great battery life, 6 hrs+ SOT, and ran cool all day. I then returned it because a better promo came out within 14 days of my purchase and got a new one. The new one has never made it past 3.5 hrs of SOT and runs hot all the time. This is with the exact same apps installed, the same settings, and initially the same firmware. I've tried running 100% stock, FDR's, freezing apps, rooting, and tweaking just about everything with little to no success which makes me wonder if this is a hardware related issue with the battery. Maybe this explains how some people are getting 8 hrs of SOT while others cant make it past 3. It's a definite possibility in my mind that we have the same or similar manufacturing defect in the s7 edge as the note 7.
http://www.sammobile.com/2016/09/11/samsung-sued-over-exploding-galaxy-s7-edge/
I've never gotten anywhere near that much screen on time. Mine's more in the 3 hours range maximum. If the screen is off, my battery seems to decently, but I've never seen the crazy high numbers that many others have.
My SOT is rather high, but I only experienced battery issues after rooting the first time with the 935V kernel. After moving to 935U, I went back to VERY cool CPU & Batteries, and better SOT.
Hot S7
Try turning off all of the Amazon crap if you don't use it. They tend to use up a lot of battery time when they are running in the back ground, and by default they are installed and set to run always. That might help a little bit.

Google any device and you'll find cases of a few burning. That's just the state of LiPo technology at the moment.
The Note 7 has had upwards of 30 cases in a very short period of time, and a known quality issue from a particular manufacturing partner. What you'll find with the S7/S7E is nothing near that severe, and on par with contemporary devices like the iPhone 6/6s.
Update: I called Samsung and I'm not even kidding here's how the first part of the conversation went:
Me: Hi I have a galaxy s7 edge and I'm a little concerned because it is draining quickly and the phone runs very warm and sometimes hot.
Agent: That is not good! Are you hurt?
Me: No I'm okay
Agent: Thank god! Please power the phone down and send it to us. We will fix it or send you a replacement within 5-7 days. What is your imei number and email address?
I got an email within 5 min with a return authorization and then called verizon because I don't want to be without a phone for 5 days. I told them the story and they are sending me a replacement and I just have to send the old phone in. Either Samsung is being super cautious or they know there might be an issue with our phones as well. Either way I'm looking forward to seeing if the replacement is any better. I saw that a couple of people have reported getting referb phones that run cooler/better.

i believe theyre over 90 now lol.. i doubt theres a defect in the S7/S7E, ppl are just wary now after the N7 recall even though unless you do anything crazy theresasmaller chance of it atually exploding..
i actually take my phone off the charger for a few mins if i feel it burning up lol
My phone has been doing this. Getting super hot and the battery goes from 100% to 0 in 2-3 hours. I'm gonna call them

If I remember correctly they had a factory issue and had to outsource like 10% of the note7 batteries to a different company. They didn't do that with the s7e to my knowledge so if there is an issue it's probably not related to the note7 issue.
I had this issue earlier this week.....phone wouldn't even last a normal 9 hour shift at work and I was down to under 15% by my lunch break. Lost my mind going back to stock and reflashed stang Rom 3 times...the third time I forgot to install greenify and the problem was solved. Reinstalled greenify and my battery drained like it was a countdown clock. Went back stock, reflashed and didn't bother with greenify, just rolling with forcedoze and have 0 issues. Currently at 32% and I've been off the charger for close to 12hours and even had to use my flahsight for a solid 10minutes
My original Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge ended up literally melting all USB cables and chargers that I plugged into it. This was roughly after 4 months of owning the device, it always got really hot while charging, but one day it started smelling like burning plastic. I successfully got a warranty replacement on that device, my current S7 Edge still gets hot after charging, but nowhere near the original device.
I would venture to assume that 'fast-charging' is the culprit behind overheating, as you are pushing 2 Amps to the battery (compared to your usual 700mAh - 1 Amp standard USB charger).
As the Doctor stated -- you will always have SOME defects in a very small percentage of devices. As the S7 Edge has been out longer, I would say we are okay

S7 edge bricked in pocket, no apparent reason.

Hello.
Today after i was back from town, I left my S7e in my pants pockets while i changed clothes and opened my pc. I tried to check whatsapp web from my pc, and it told me your phone is out of range(out of battery in this case). and i was like oh well ok, its ran out of juice. Tho i was a little suspicious about it, as it was at 20%+ while i was at town, out of experience i know that 20 lasts a long time. But, i forgot about it and was too lazy to get my charger out of my backpack.
Now after about 2,5 hours i quit the stuff on my pc, moved up and got ready to charge the phone again.
And HEH HEH its bricked. Or optionally the screen is totally dead, wich i think is not.
Have not flashed ANY roms on the device, have had a stable root and stable xposed and stable everything since note 7 launch. Never had any issues.
So, what do yall think?
If the battery dies can it cause this? Havent had any water contact or anything with the phone today.
its dead even when charging?
if yes thats not battery fault.
there is a sticky thread for bricked S7 edge, try that.
or maybe you hit your phone and it died?
Lithium-Ion batteries don't like having less than ~40% charge. You said that out of experience you'd knew that 20% left charge lasts a long time, suggesting that your device has been run below 40% of capacity quite often.
For me, this indicates a dead battery that is no longer capable of delivering/holding a sufficient current.
it should work on usb even without battery, like notebooks.
dead battery just dont hold energy and capacity

Not necessarily. Most, if not all modern smartphones will not turn on with a malfunctioning battery.
I tried it out of curiosity. I have a few devices lying around.
Trying to turn them on without a battery:
LG G4 - negative
LG Nexus 5 - negative
HTC One M7 - negative
HTC One M9 - negative
Samsung Galaxy S3 - negative
Samsung Galaxy S4 - negative
Samsung Galaxy S5 - negative
Samsung Galaxy S6 - negative
Samsung Galaxy Note 3 - negative
Samsung Galaxy Note 4 - negative
thanks we learn every day.
mostly devices that I repair turn on just on cable, but I dont ha e a lot of experience with modern smartphones - mostly lcd replace.
I had the same problem, I was sending a TX message on my S7 Edge and all of a sudden the screen just went blank. The phone wouldn't turn on or off and it was getting hot. So I booted into safe mode, now the phone is in safe mode and won't boot back into a normal operating system mode. Now my S7 Edge is stuck in safe mode. I can move through the different options, but the phone will not act on any of the power options

Replaced battery, still old bad capacity.

S7 edge exynos bought in Norway close to release.
So I finally got to replace my battery after using it for about half a year with minor swelling. Accubattery reported it at 64%health with about 2200mAh capacity (design capacity is 3600).
After about 10 charges with the new battery and some "manual benchmarks" (you deplete it totally and charge it to 100 and some additional minutes to see how much goes into the battery) I still only got about 2400mAh so I went back and got them to switch the battery again (not official Samsung service center, but it's original OEM parts).
New one (2nd replacement) seems to also max out at 2400 after a couple of charges (and yes I've tried resetting phone and wiping cache partition). When I go into the testing section in the samsung members app it goes through my phone looking for problems and it states that the battery health is bad and should be taken to a service center for replacement, but this battery is totally new.
Atm, I'm trying the re-calibration method of depleting it totally, on and off on and off, then to 100% and down again and up, but I doubt it will work.
I've also put in an order for the galaxy A70 which I get for basically nothing (1700NOK - 191$, normally costs 4700NOK - 530$). Unless the replacement battery sorts itself out I'm gonna have to admit defeat and switch from my dream phone.
My theory is that either my mobo has some weird ass issue or there's some systemcarememory that hasn't reset and it treats the new battery like the old not letting it charge as much as it can as a safety. Tried contacting samsung support, but no reply.
Any help/advice is welcomed with open arms. Also if anyone have thoughts on the S7edge to A70 switch I'd love to hear em
The only solution is if you are on Oreo you should downgrade to Nougat and then reflash Oreo and if you are on Oreo and have a binary say u4 and you could not find binary u4 Nougat then I'm afraid no solution. No custom Nougat won't do the trick.
