Unlocked Bootloader - Moto Z Force Questions & Answers

I am not all that familiar with unlocked bootloaders but after skimming some of the posts on the Moto Z Force I am seeing a lot of discussion about, I replied to one thread decided perhaps I should start a new.
The bootloader is able to be unlocked from the settings menu.
First you must go to settings then about phone. Go to build number and tap it 7 times. This will enable developer options.
Again go to the settings menu, go to developer options and there is a toggle for OEM unlocking.
Hope this helps as I am new to xda(new member, long time reader)

Dude you rock! But will this allow root? Using known methods like ping-pong or towel root? I've been with Samsung for 6 years, so this Moto z force thing is still new to me. And I'm just starting to dig through the threads on this.

I just made the switch from Samsung myself so I am not entirely sure. I happened to stumble upon that accidentally and saw a few questions about unlocking a bootloader. Now I am not sure if it makes a difference but my device is not under contract as I paid full price and activated on prepaid.

This will not unlock your bootloader

This will not unlock your bootloader. This will not allow root. There is almost zero chance of this phone ever having its bootloader able to be unlocked and you can call Verizon at (800) 922-0204 to thank them for it. They are tyrants and I will never give them a dollar.

Yeah its the same for me, it will allow you to unlock the bootloader, but it will void the warranty so I haven't done it yet but I will later on. Hopefully it works! It make it really easy to root with Verizon.

Please read everything in this thread. Thank you.

Checking this box will NOT unlock the bootloader. Anyone that has had a phone where you CAN in fact unlock the bootloader knows this.

Would quadrooter exploits work on this phone? This phone is running the snapdragon chip set and has the following vulnerabilities:
CVE-2016-2503, CVE-2016-2504 and CVE-2016-5204
Y'all should be able to check your phones as well using the quadrooter scanner app from play s.

It would take an experienced dev to turn those exploits into a root avenue for us. I doubt that person will show up for this device.

They may very well show up. This is a new phone and somewhat a power house. A lot of people leaving Samsung and coming to this device. I just left the gs6. So I am still holding up hope. It's still new and may take a little time.

This will be one of the few Verizon phones which will get the Dev love it needs to be unlocked and rooted.Being now in my thirties and running Arch Linux for years I really don't care anymore,..there isn't a need for me ..I get my Rock's off on my box and keep my phone working .

I can clarify, my Moto Z Force does have those three vulnerabilities.
These vulnerabilities are global for Android MM, so perhaps someone, somewhere can use the exploit to gain root on Android - we'd be able to use that method on our phones. Here's to being hopeful!

Not gong to happen, so I'd stop worrying and thinking about this.
We're still hard at work, but we've still got a ways to go. We're still in the research/discovery phase. I'd just update.

I was about where you were at in October. I've got a decent chunk of Linux/C experience, but most of it is just reading/learning/searching and putting the pieces together. It's just really time consuming
It is sad how quickly people are dismissing it as impossible. people said the same thing about the Razor...
Unfortunately there are currently only two devs working on this @ryanbg (he is mostly working on N3) and @Surge1223 (he is mostly working on S4).
Here are the things needed for any phone to be unlocked.
1. Large userbase.
2. Most (if not all) variants of the phone has locked bootloader.
3. No developer edition phone.
4. Ungreedy dev who is not going to sell off the exploit to the oem or carrier in exchange of money.
5. Nice enough "guaranteed" bounty for it to be worth dev's time.
6. Dev who is not scared to be sued by the carrier/oem for releasing unlocked bootloader/exploit/signing key.
And in this case we are missing most of the above requirements, if not all.

Well from what I understand there have been a few posts on other forums about Adam Outler posting a picture on his G+ showing Secure boot off but he later had to delete it because people didn't understand that Sboot being off isn't the same as a bootloader unlock. So maybe if he can get that far there is a way for everyone to do it and the right hole just hasn't been found yet. I am very very proud of our devs and think if anyone can do it it will be someone on XDA. I am hoping for a bootloader unlock but I have to agree it does look a bit grim.

Nah. It was actually @ryanbg who achieved that secureboot:none status and it was his picture that he sent it to adam AFAIK adam doesn't even have note 3 (ppl where trying to crowd fund it but mods kept deleting those threads for one reason or another..so he actually never got N3 in his hand).
P.S. I'm just hoping that some dev has already cracked the bootloader but is waiting on S5 release before posting it. :fingers-crossed: @designgears already has the S5 firmware but hasn't posted it yet.

[Q] HTC one m10 Verizon unlock?

When the HTC one m10 hits for Verizon, it better get root!!! And unlock! I swear Verizon is really pissing me off the way they're locking their devices down. Pretty excited about this phone and I just don't want to be disappointed like I was with pretty much every other Verizon phone
I don't see Verizon knocking off their ridiculous lock-downs anytime soon. That being said, Samsung and Motorola on Verizon have tended to be the worst combination for rooting and unlocking. HTC Flagships have generally gotten a fairly good method within six months of release. Not ideal, but there.

Is it confirmed that it can be unlocked with the java cards or clip? There was an ominous warning by jcase about java cards and newer HTC devices but I never saw any other details.

With the way all snapdragon 820 devices have been so far, I wonder if HTC will use Qualcomm secure boot as well to block S-OFF. Qualcomm is really proud of their secure boot. I have T-Mobile and even the S7 and S7 Edge have encrypted bootloaders with Qualcomm secure boot as well as dm-verity. The G5 acts like it is unlocked but it uses dm-verity as well as Qualcomm secure boot also. T-Mobile traditionally has always been alright with rooting but unless HTC changes things up, it's going to be a rough year of phones. I should start saving for the Nexus...
Is it possible that the Verizon HTC 10 could get root before S-off, or will S-off be necessary in order to gain root access?
Thanks.
According to jcase's thread they have ordered a few 10, so s-off is likely. But I don't think it's ever been done without root.

To my knowledge S-OFF is releated to downgrading/upgrading using unsigned RUUs.

For Verizon, it's a little more. Verizon doesn't allow you to unlock the bootloader via hrcdev.com. So the only way to unlock the bootloader on the m9 was to be s-off. That's where it gets tricky. In order to s-off with Sunshine, you had to be rooted, but the only way to root was to unlock the bootloader. Being that you could not unlock the bootloader on the Verizon m9, you couldn't root and therefore couldn't s-off. Quite a vicious circle.
jcase and the Sunshine team have recently been able to make sunshine work for the Verizon m9. I'm not sure if they were able to achieve a temp root of sorts to allow s-off, but either way, it works now. This allowed you to unlock the bootloader and then root the device. Hopefully, they will be able to do the same thing for the Verizon HTC 10. I know many people had to resort to a java card and/or xtc2 clip to achieve s-off on Verizon. Many who had a card or clip helped out by offering their time to s-off other members phones. Either by mailing the phone or meeting up with them.
@jsaxon2 Thanks for clarification.
Thanks to our devs who put time on those things to make us free from carriers ****, people with contracted phones really have hardtimes waiting for exploit to be founded and getting software ready for doing great things ie unlocking/rooting etc...
On the other hand the international variant almost always got loves from everywhere but at the end it depend on the community/manufacture/developers who want to produce a dev friendly phone/experienced devs who want to make great roms/mods/and all the push we the community give to our devs.

Yep we use temproot to get root then s-off it like any other phone. We have a few projects for other variants and models underway now that we have non verizon m10 done.
XTC2Clip/javacards will not work on m10, at least not until the 2nd gen javacard keys are stolen from HTC. We may end up offering mail in for Verizon m10 (we dont use the stolen HTC keys/javacards so our methods will still work).

What about this bootloader unlock process using AutoRoot tools?

I don't have a Droid Maxx 2 because I only use rootable phones but I stumbled on the instructions on the page at the link below and wondered if this could be a valid method. I know NOTHING about the site, the tools, the instructions, etc. I'm just curious and look around for a breakthrough from time to time.

Doesn't unlock the bootloader, sadly. This phone is on lockdown until Motorola / Verizon decides to give customers the unlock key or until someone figures out a way to hack it but seems doubtful.
This phone is getting nougat though!

Not sure, man. Hoping soon though!

Unfortunately, that website is just full bull s***. There's no auto root tools, its just click bait.
You go through all the hoops of "click here" and you google all kinds of things trying to find out whether this is malware only to find that when you click on "download" its the age-old scumbag scam of "complete one of the 3 surveys to activate link."
Don't fall for it if you have no idea how to spot a scam. If you do know how to navigate that crap, by all means check it out to see if I'm wrong as I often am. Should you be able to download this alleged auto root tools, reply with instructions, and i'll try to use it on my droid maxx 2.
thanks

Any Root Update for Sprint Variant?

I look through the threads and mostly what I see is T-mobile got a root. Other updates show regular roots but no mention of it applying to Sprint. Threads directed to Sprint don't say nor show much. Anyone can assist in getting a link or update for the root. I am looking very forward to it and also a mod for the DAC audio. For some reason it seems like an over rated feature as audio isn't that high as advertised and mind you I have the earphones that come free with the purchase.
I'm sure you'll see word either in the development section or in this thread. They'll need to get around a locked bootloader first.
Thanks Doug

The Note 7 was rooted without unlocking the bootloader. I don't understand the under the hood specifics, but where there's a will...
Patience people. Contemporary Android is a maze of security protocols in order to get root. Not just the bootloader, but also SELinux policy, capability bounding, file-size checks, and so on. When an OEM tries to lock down a device. Really tries....It becomes hell. The phone only went on sale a week ago.
I'd suggest reading the following tale one fellow posted about his weeks long effort to chroot his Asus tablet. NOTE-his tablet had an unlocked bootloader and fastboot command access. Both are things we don't have.

[PSA] Read before relocking your bootloader

I'm not sure what is up, this isn't a new thing, but people keep coming to me (1-2 a day) with this issue.
If your phone isn't stock, DO NOT RELOCK your bootloader. You will 'soft brick' it, and at this time there is no easy route to fixing it.
If you are on EE UK, Verizon or another carrier blocking bootloader unlocks, and you used dePixel8 to unlock it, DO NOT relock your bootloader unless you are sure you don't want it unlocked again.
Finally, dePixel8 is UNSUPPORTED. Don't come to me if you can't get it to work, don't come to me if you used it them messed up your phone by flashing something bad or whatever. Its on you.
What's the fix if this does happen?

Interesting.. glad this didn't happen to me. I did relock my bootloader once because i was having issues activating my SIM card. I wanted see if that was the reason. Once i did manage to get the SIM activated i went through the process of unlocking using the dePixel8 method again. I guess i won't be doing that again.
Hah this would have been nice to see first. I ended up soft-bricked on my pixel xl. I hope a fix comes soon. Even a jtag or direct method somehow.
Flashing needs to be done directly since fastboot reads oem unlock and denys it.

This isnt a new warning, its pretty much standard "Dont relock with non stock firmware".
JTAG is a no go, would have to attack to the ufs and rewrite at the best least the boot.img

First of all, I'd like to say thanks to all the hard work put into the dePixel8 BL unlock.
With that said, I would like to say a couple things about this particular statement.
1. It is slightly misleading, you can relock your bootloader and still unlock it again under the right circumstances. If your software is all stock and you use dePixel8 after relocking, it will unlock again.
2. This statement contradicts the previous one. You should probably avoid telling people "they can never unlock their bootloader again if they relock it" if there is ANY possibility that they can. After reading this statement from you in the unlocking thread I spent about 2 hours scouring threads to find out if this statement was always true, which it is not.
Again, thank you for all the hard work on getting this unlock out. The intent of my post here is only to help improve communication of potential problems.

The next security release should rollout tomorrow... And with that there will be a fix for VZW models preventing depixel8 from working. So IF you relock your bootloader after taking this update, we'll you'll be SOL. It's only misleading if you don't have prior knowledge of pretty much anything android.
I mean of course you can lock and unlock as many times as you want right NOW. Tomorrow will be a different story I guarantee.... But go ahead and be our guinea pig. I for one just say thank you @jcase and @beaups and listen to their advice. They've been around a long time and given us lots of goodies. I don't question them.

I'm guessing you dont understand how depixel8 works.
I'm guessing you dont realize that google could remotely nix this in the butt any any moment
I'm guessing you are unaware of NDE63X at this point and it's effect on the situation.
Why don't you lock your bootloader for a few days, then try? or just sit back, watch ppl ignore the PSA, then start compaling about being stuck locked.
