Worth rooting and using xposed? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions & Answers

Seeing some threads seems like root is not stable yet. Can people share their experiences on if it is worth rooting the s7 edge and what are the pros/cons u notice after rooting and running xposed. Example - significant increase in battery life.
Debating if I should root or not. So far getting 4 hours of average SOT.
Thanks

Root for g935 IS NOT stable and the Engineering boot is ment for the repair of software issues. Most users find that the con of poor stability outweighs the desire to root the device. However. If you happen to not like the AT&T or rom of your carrier you can install the Samsung branded unlocked device firmware (G935U). The stability of stock for me is key, and until I get a rom like Cyanogen or similar custom rom and unlocked bootloader I'm personally not changing a thing about this phone. I love it! Though I am following the development, pretty closely at that.
Hope this is useful mate, cheers.

Honesty not worth it, I had it for about 1 week and random soft bricks started to happen, extreme lag, and many components becoming broken.
You should wait for a more stable root.

I'm just itching for a reason. I've been checking these forums incessantly (came from nexus 6) to see when root would be achieved at which point I'd make the switch. Loving this device, but am excited to get into flashing roms in the future. For now, I can wait.

I'm rooted, and aside from when unlocking my phone, I don't notice any measurable lag.
Smooth sailing with xposed as well.
IMHO, just take it for a test drive when you get a chance, and see how ya like it.

Ive been rooted for almost a month now. Using this Method :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...-to-notes-root-install-xposed-unroot-t3411039
If you root and use the DeBloat and Performance .Zip included in the OP it should work just fine. The only issues ive found to happen are when I installed the Xposed Framework. For some reason the libraries in Xposed dont agree with the Eng Boot. That being said once i rooted and ran the debloat and performance fix zip ive been running great so far. ive managed 14 and a half hours of steady, stable use with about 53 percent battery left at the end of the day.

I had Xposed installed for a week or so. Not sure if it was the modules I had or what, but it killed my battery life quickly. I wiped my phone, flashed stock, updated to new PG1 Fw, then rerooted. Since not having Xposed, my battery life has been phenomenally better. Just my experience.

How did you manage to install Xposed with FlashFire?

I've been using 935 U that used to be a 935 A ROOTED , flashed exposed with flash fire and enjoy a ton of fun modules , I finally have embraced my s7 into my heart, and if a new ota comes out for 935 U I can odin flash back then take the update , I will say adaway youtube , and background playback alone are worth it , many other great mods working with this as well, lag go's away after a few minutes and I have to sign in to my wi-fi after each reboot, first thing I did post root was freeze security agent log with TIBU.
---------- Post added at 09:18 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:12 AM ----------
i downloaded the custom 85.1 manam build and flashed it , used exposed installer 3.0 alpha 4 and bingo !

I will agree battery was up and down when exposed was installed, but 98% of modules ran flawlessly , anyone know when an ota update may be coming to 935-U?

I came here to say basically this. My phone is totally stable and fast. As far as the wifi password issue mentioned, refer to this post for the fix:

Make sure to thank the poster!
My battery life is also great. Standby drain is better than any phone I've had. I get just under 1% an hour with AOD ON. Best I've ever managed before was 1% per hour, I could never break it until this phone with root.

At the mean time, AFAIK, the only international version has an unlocked bootloader for custom roms.

[Q] Should i Root?

I receive my Nexus 4 tomorrow, Im still debating whether i should root the phone or just keep it stock, any recommendations? Thank you
Depends if you want to enhance your user experience or be happy with how it is
I say root but use it a couple days and once you find that you're installing apps that require su permissions then root it.

Ideally NO!
First use for a couple of days and check for any software or hardware related issues also check the battery backup with stock rom, kernel and then you are free to root.

Keeping the stock rom will not let you update to 4.3 if you have a custom recovery installed. //not true
I couldn't imagine using an unrooted phone, rooted mine within hours. But as suggested, you should check yours first for a couple of days for defects, then root.

Really? Well, one learns new things every day.
Idk why you would get a nexus and not root. They're made for that. Screen color calibration, pie for more screen space, smoothness and longer battery life, USB otg. The list goes on! I didn't even use mine stock for more than a couple of minutes

Of the few Android devices that I own, stock systems have a few disadvantages to my taste:
1. BLOATWARE UP THE A$$
2. SO-SO OPERATING SPEED AND SOME LAG
3. DULL "EVERYBODY-HAS-IT" STOCK SYSTEM => BORING
Advantages of stock systems:
1. Somewhat more or most stable.
2. Much simpler to adjust settings without too many new technical terms or technicalities.
3. Warranty stays if you have it.
I'm still new and still play around with custom ROMs, as I am heavy on eliminating of proprietary software staying on my devices, both computers and smartphones. If it's there, it has to serve a purpose; otherwise, it MUST be gone, not just DISABLED.
I'd definitely root it! To get all the extra goodies which stock doesn't have (like Pie, hide navbar, themes, tweaks, undervolting, underclocking, adblock etc). But try out stock vanilla android and see it root is actually needed for you.

G900V: Top / most popular CURRENT TouchWiz ROM

Hey folks,
New to the rooting game. Downgraded my G900V from 5.0 -> 4.4.2 NCG, towelroot, SuperSu, Safestrap 3.75, Titanium backup. Backed up via SafeStrap custom recovery for stock and pasted it to my desktop as well as a full Titanium backup.
I am ready to enter the custom rom game! I am sad that I cannot try Cyanogenmod because that seems to be the top dog.
I am hoping to retain these earlier KitKat OS versions because they seem to run infinitely raster than stock 5.0 pre-root. However, I've never had one rooted and debloated so who knows.
I am looking for max customizability. I was all about customizing my UI like crazy prior to rooting on 5.0 using apps. So highly customizable UI, battery life +, and stability if at all possible.
1) What do you guys suggest? Thanks!
2) Do all TouchWiz-based ROMS require that you flash another firmware version prior to installation?
As of right now, I am looking at the Alliance ROM but it was released like a year ago and wondering if there's a better or more updated version.
I found a link via galaxys5root dot c0m
Is this a safe download?

I revised my original post and apologize again. I am just interested in what my options are.
I haven't heard back on a working download link for Build 2 of Alliance ROM so I am venturing into the MOAR ROM territory. Just to be safe, I purchased Titanium PRO and it's being synced to Drive as we speak.
After it completes, I'm going to attempt my first ROM flash and nervous. From what I've gathered, I need to boot into SafeStrap, full wipe, install the zip from ex/int SD-card, and then boot into download mode. From there, I flash VZW_BOA8_RETAIL_FIRMWARE_ONLY.tar.md5.
Now, once I do this, the post says that SafeStrap won't work anymore. If I follow these instructions:
"7. Safestrap will no longer work unless you use odin and flash NI2_STOCK_KERNEL_FOR_SAFESTRAP.tar.md5 or any VZW KITKAT kernel. Then you can enter Safestrap. Once you flash file or whatever you need to do in safestrap remember to boot to download mode from safestrap and then use odin to flash VZW_BOA8_RETAIL_KERNEL_ONLY.tar.md5 or the VZW_BOA8_RETAIL_FIRMWARE_ONLY.tar.md5. Then you will be good to go. This process must be done every time you need to use SafeStrap!"
... will I still be able to run safestrap and retain the ROM? Or is that just in case I want to access my backed up recovery and revert back to my custom recovery pre-ROM?

XDA changed their stance on these kinds of threads and are allowing them to to stay open as long as they don't turn into a flame fest.
I am curious too, as to what is out there that runs well. I am coming from an AT&T LG G2 with lots of options to a this phone that seems to be much more restricted than anything I have seen in the past. This looks like its going to be far more work to get few results. Also it seems like it's easier to brick than the G2 was. Obviously I have a lot of reading to do, and probably a downgrade from OE1 if I want root. I just want to know if there is a ROM worth doing all this work for. Thank you!
It's complicated but worth it.
I'm not going to pick a favorite, but anyone worth their search engine can see what I'm using.
The battery life was horrible straight out of the box, and 'something' had to be done. I have flashed different phones from Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, etc. from at least 4 different carriers. Nothing compares with how much harder it is just to get root on our Samsung-SM-G900V variant with it's locked bootloader. CyanogenMod is not even an option, so I'm using a custom 5.0 TouchWiz ROM.
The debloating zip via ADB is what really fixed the poor battery life.
It is worth it.
My battery life is now 'amazing'.
The only other phone I had that even came close to battery life and screen on time like this, was my AT&T Samsung Galaxy S2, running CM10.2
Is it worth the effort? Even after trying a short cut and getting stuck in a loop with no recovery? Having to use Odin just to start over? Not having any success until I found a YouTube tutorial?
It's up to you. Perhaps you don't mind bloatware. Maybe you can always find a way to plug it in for a charge.
Good luck.

I forgot to mention that I am currently calibrating my battery using a Play Store app. I wonder if this will help
Also, I did it the manual way as well. What a serious pain in the rear lol. Afterwards, with my newfound confidence of rooting, I went to work on my wife's LG G2. What a joke!
Her battery life is unreal. At the end of the day, she sits at 60% battery life after hefty use. I am getting a bit jealous.

Possible to un-root a phone without a firmware flash?

Is it possible to "un-root" a phone without having to flash firmware? For example I'd like to use Samsung Pay which won't work because of a root check BUT would like to keep the debloated and optimized U ROM along with the non-provisioned WIFI-tethering, VVM, etc. that I originally rooted for. So is this possible? I understand that I will still be on the eng. boot kernel but that's fine.

You can try the unroot option in the SU app but I doubt it will work because the files are pushed to the system by ADB. I could be wrong though.
This is one thing I have been curious about as well. I just want to make a few changes to files that require root, then remove root to keep my Samsung Pay working but the changes still saved in place. I feel like someone has tried it, I just haven't ran across the post yet...
I'd like to keep the U firmware while having all of the Verizon essentials but without root. Even optimized with all battery savings, I'm getting heat just using chrome and having more battery drainage than when I was unrooted. I read it's something dealing with the eng.boot since it's not made for daily use.
So would it be possible just to factory reset U firmware and have the necessary Verizon apps to install afterwards? I'm guessing root isn't that beneficial for me at this point if it just drains my battery since I usually would have 3 hours of SOT by 50%, and now it's only 2 hours by 50%.

You can install most of the Verizon apps through the Play Store except for VVM, which requires you to write into /system and thus requires root and thus the eng. kernel. Also you won't be be able to patch the HD Calling feature without root as well. IF you need these features, then the eng. kernel is a must have in order to obtain root to install.
If not, you're good to go. I'm sure there's probably something else I'm missing.

Then it would already be pretty great to simply get a debloated stock Verizon firmware. Because I was amazed at how much free space I had for internal storage once I flashed the U firmware and the v15 debloat fix zip. If I could go all of that without the battery drainage that I'm pretty sure is coming from root itself.

Your battery drainage is due to the engineering kernel, not necessarily from root. It is not an optimized kernel at all. When I was rooted, the phone was 6 degrees C warmer at idle than stock and would lag. This is with all the V15 fixes from the S7 thread. And heat kills battery life.
I'm sure someone could do this. I'm from the verizon flat s7 forums and a person is suggesting getting on the rooted firmware then from that installing a debloated stock rom from there without root but with various cooked in optimizations. It's not out yet but I'm waiting to see what comes of it. Root hasn't settled enough for me to run it all the time just yet.

935v vs. 935u....what's the diff?

I have a verizon edge model sm-g935v....build # g9325vvru4ap13.
I see everyone talking about the 935u firmware. Is an update for my "V" or is it firmware for another edge model (and i shouldn't be concerned about it)?
935v is the Verizon version and the 935u is the unlocked version.
935v comes with all the bloat ware from stock Verizon, while the 935u comes with no bloat but you might have to do some configurations (apn,mms,etc...) for it to work with Verizon.
Hope that helps ya.
Ps: installing 935u won't unlock your phone (sadly)

I've accepted the OTA update when I got my phone last week.
So i assume I need to use this root guide...Verizon Root Guide (Knox still good)Verizon Root Guide (Knox still good).....http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-s7-edge/how-to/verizon-root-knox-t3410624?

I can also flash the U firmware sometime in the future once i've rooted the V firmware?
you can flash either and root both. I have the same phone as you with same base band ect. I first tried the root method for the 935v and had bad battery issues so i switched and flashed the 935u and ran it stock for 3 weeks with no changes and had no issues loved the no Verizon crap, the phone ran nice. I just rooted the 935u today using stang5litre edition 5.0 ver2 and so far it is running smooth with no issues. testing out the battery life now. It is up to you what you want to flash. they both do the same thing as far as root. however I had lot of issues with the basic root 935v... I like the stang5litre v2 its all set up and don't have to tweak anything.... so far...
I would stay away from the "U" firmware until you familiarize with the terms and root.
And well in theory both of the guides are good to follow, since the only thing you are doing is flashing the eng-kernel.
Now before you go on, what's the purpose of you rooting?
Flashing another Rom?
Have stock, but modified Rom?

you can flash either and root both. I like the stang5litre v2 its all set up and don't have to tweak anything.... so far...

Thanks a ton, Justin.ice!
I see that we no longer have TWRP. HOw do i make a nandroid backup?
Also, is there a way to backup the app installs i've done while my phone is stock? then, once i get root/install rom, I can just restore them?

Sadly no Nandroid Backups but, once rooted you can use titanium backup for the backing then again for restoring once in the new rom.
Im using titanium for my backup and my google account has my apps as well if I have to go back to stock.

Could someone please try..

No real way to do a nandroid backup. You can backup all your partitions with FlashFire, but the problem is if you brick your phone you can't get to FlashFire to do a restore.

In theory the U version should be slightly more snappy since it comes without the bloat and therefore unnecessary running processes, but Android's baked-in OOM handling is fine and the bloat has minimal impact if any. I've seen some people say they've had less root-related problems with the U, but otherwise there's not much of a difference.

So you flashed the U firmware following the guide posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...de-flashing-sm-935u-firmware-verizon-t3415145
Then you flashes stang5litre and all was good for you?
I want to do the same to my phone once it comes in the mail I just want to be sure. I also plan on using it on Cricket so I hope that works too.

Yep, everything went good and installed on first try. I played around with colors and apps...the link issue I had I think was with the xda app. Other then that. The battery was almost stock. System ran nice with no lagging.

Awesome. You give me hope lol. I don't suppose you know if the U firmware unlocks all the LTE bands so I have flawless connectivity with Cricket would you? Also after you flash Stang5litre did you still have fully working root? Cheers mate

Not sure on the band's, I think I seen something about it that it had all the bands... as for root with stang5litre yes it has root and everything is baked in the rom.

Beautiful. Thanks for your replies mate. You give me hope with this phone lol. I had a Sprint S7 Edge that I traded off of Craiglist and it was a NIGHTMARE to unlock it not to mention there is no dev support for it.
Sold it and got a sweet deal on a brand new Verizon S7 Edge. I sure hope all goes well with flashing.

Stock or root

My X compact is on its way!
Do you guys recommend rooting or keeping stock?
Important to me would be smooth performance, battery and camera.
Thank you

I recommend rooting the stock!
there is not actually many custom roms for this phone, and stock rom is really good if you just root it

Paranoid Android team recently added official support for x compact, but I don't know if they have a stable version yet.
You can't get better than rooted stock, custom ROMS always seem to have issues that prevent them from being a full daily driver.

The usual, debloat, new fonts, theme the system, couple of build.prop edits and that's about it for me.
My 2 cent.
Stock ROM is very good. You *could* root to debloat, but I have preferred to just deactivate the useless app (which are on the /system partition, so that you won't get a real advantage in removing them).
At the moment I don't see a big thing in rooting the device. On the other side, you could loose some interesting feature (e.g., vodafone wallet, or some home banking functions)..
Enjoy your Xc!

I actually did not change anything except for some build.prop changes
Stock rom is very good as is, I just recommended root so you can use some apps like greenify :good::good:
A very good thing about Xperia devices is the camera, and with a custom rom the camera app is always lacking (unless they can use/steal the stock camera app?)
Otherwise, I don't care about any other Sony apps.
Rooted stock is very good though I'm happy.
If PA has good camera and I can pass safety net, I might switch one day.
Thanks all! I'll look into build prop, to be honest not sure what this does

I'm in the same boat. Went from a rooted Z1 Compact to the X compact. It seems so tedious to root the X Compact so I haven't done it yet. However I can say I am missing having root, missing Titanium backup etc. We'll see how we go. Hoping for someone to release a guide to root nougat without having to go back to MM.
Mine came with N loaded. It is international version.
I've yet to try it out extensively.

Don't get too hung up on build.prop mods as a lot of them don't work anymore if they even did in the first place. The only two entries I have in mine are...
Code:
persist.adb.notify=0
fw.show_multiuserui=0
