Android OS and Android System eating battery on Nexus 6P - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone! It's my first time posting here. I have a problem where everyday I have been getting both Android OS and Android System at the top of my battery stats.
I am running the Android N Dev 5 and getting less that 3 hours of SOT. The phone is only 4 months old.
I have tried to clear the cache and only did a factory reset only once. The reset helps a little but then creeps back. The cache clearing doesn't make a difference.. Something is eating up the battery and I have yet to try to place it on safe mode and hunt for the apps which I find such a time consuming process.
I attached a screen shot of my battery stats. I unplugged it at 11 and connected to wifi, fell asleep and woke up with 85%. Left for work and that's when I started using Data. I see that there are dots at the awake even when was asleep. It's odd and frustrating as I expected to have good battery life on the 6P but was bellow average on 6.0.1 and with N was better but not great.
Its a new phone of just 4 months and am just so tempted to have it checked out.
Any suggestions on the software side of how to fix this battery drain ?
Thanks :fingers-crossed:

For what it's worth my 6P is behaving the same way on the N5 dev build. I went back to M and the battery drain went away. I did a full wipe then downloaded N5 again today, will update if anything improves. I'm not too concerned as the apps are not optimized for N, nor is this the final build.

Keep in mind that Developer Previews aren't designed to be daily driver ROMs and are exactly as they're titled - for developers to get their apps ready.
Flash factory images (all of them; Recovery, Boot, System, etc.) and after things have settled down - an hour or so after all the app install/updates are done, reset your battery stats and confirm SOT from 100% is still as poor as you said on DP5.
With PureNexus July23, the stock settings and kernels and everything that come with PN, systemless root/xposed, Greenify Pro, and using Tasker to disable mobile data while connected to WiFi (and subsequently re-enable Mobile Data when WiFi Disconnects), I get 2 days of battery life.

Hi everyone! Thanks for the views and help.
I went back to M and it's been great so far. Battery life is better than N and got nearly 4 hours of SOT on average.
But thinking of the apps and how they're not optimized makes me think that I should maybe hold back on the next N update till the apps are efficient and work well on it. It sounds silly now as it's still in beta but makes me cautious in some way.
Should maybe root my phone soon giving it more options.
Anyways thanks again everyone. :victory:

Until it is stable release, you can expect all kinds of craziness. It doesn't mean something is wrong.
Google most likely has a lot of debugging going on as this is supposed to be the last beta release.
Expect the public release to be much better.

Happy with AOKP 4.2.2 on SCH-I500

A friend retired her Fassy, indicating that it was dog slow, wouldn't hold a charge, and took foreva to take a charge. She asked me if I wanted to play with it for a bit.
I got it, and kept it off to charge it up - seemed to top off in a reasonable amount to time - not too quick, not too slow. Once charged, I hopped on it and, woah, she definitely had something corrupted.
I went into eff it mode, pulled down all of her pics/vids/audio/dls/snaps/etc. and proceeded to root it and install a recovery. Having only owned my GS3, I have only ever been exposed to 4.x versions of android. With this device having a 2.x flavor onboard, I felt the rush of discovering something old and admiring changes for the better and observing trusted old ways of the wise.
I actually struggled a bit finding a good way to root it and get a recovery installed. I ended up following Section 4 herein and got CWM installed. From there, it was gravy getting AOKP 4.2.2 installed.
I ran some testing over the last few days, just to see how the battery survived this current generation version of Android on some older chassis' hardware. Frankly, I am really surprised that it lasted as long as it did. I kept WiFi on and have a reasonable amount of apps installed (the norm social media, gapps, etc.). I think it is safe to say that her battery and hardware are very likely fine.
Of course, real-world use will predicate a much shorter battery life. But, I think it will work fine for her, for now. And, yes, she wants it back... :crying: I was hoping she would say 'just keep it' as I was looking forward to having another droid to play with, besides my main phone (GS3) that I can't afford to be playing with too much, as it is my link to work here at the home office.
Anyways, wanted to drop a note confirming a positive experience with the Fassy and Android 4.x. Peace. Out.

i was running 4.22 based Jellybro version 7-17(the last one before they stopped developing for it) for a while. Without the devil Kernel, I got battery life of about a day and 8 hours. With 7-19 Devil Kenel I was getting around 2-3 days total. Granted I ran without mobile data turned on but I did use it with Talk and Text plus wifi so without the 3G radio to sap the battery, my results might be a little biased. Also I use 3500 mah batteries.
I am playing with Paranoid Android(4.4 based ROM) on that Fassy and battery life is even better. It;s got some glitches in it though but I like where it;s heading.

Hi.
I'm trying to resurrect my old samsung fascinate from verizon. It's rooted with EH09 but it won't charge my new battery. Can you post the link for the AOKP 4.2.2 rom you installed?
Thanks,
Devan

stay with the 4.22 versions, the 4.3 and 4.4 versions are more experimental and mobile data might not be working correctly or a littlle flaky.
I've been having an extended text issue with Geewiz 4.2.2 so I might give this a look. Thanks.

Horrible battery plz help me

I tried clearing the cache from stock recovery but it did not help me
I have updated to 2.1 and I can say that battery life was equally worse in 2.0.2 and 2.1

I wish I could say I have a solution but I have almost the same problem. With my opt, Google play services also is in on the battery drain. Would really like to have some tips. I've seen cases where one of these processes drains the battery, but not 2 or 3.
Very similar to my battery life. 2 hours screen on time, 12 hours off the charger, at 20%.
Do you have fingerprint scanner or tap to wake, and carry your phone in your pants pocket? If so, you may want to try having the screen facing away from you at all times to avoid accidental wakelocks.

Not OP, but personally I doubt it's that. I have charged my phone to 100%, then left it unplugged for 8 hours overnight for testing, and it will usually be at 80% the next morning. Most phones I have had won't drop below 90% overnight.
I just got my OP2 and it was at 93% when I started the initial setup process... after 44 minutes of setting up and downloading apps and the 2.1 update, it was at 52%. My Moto X Pure has "ok" battery life, but is much better in comparison... It only dropped about 20% during the initial setup, including ROOTing and doing a Nandroid.
So, I'm a little concerned about keeping the OP2 for this reason? Plus, the speaker sounds terrible.... But I've been using HTC dual front speaker phones for the past 2 1/2 years and most recently the Moto X Pure with dual front speakers. So the one speaker on the bottom is a bit of a let-down.
Guys, ok i charged my OP2 till 94% last night and left it. In the morning my battery was down to 54% and the major eatup of battery was done by MAPS. but my location was off and maps was not there in the running apps. SOT was 5 mins.
So, i am still trying to figure out as how to kill the Maps. But from morning (7 am) till now (3 pm), my batter was down only 23% and i have been constantly using my phone with SOT as 2 hrs.
Little weird but intersting.

6.0 users post your Android OS usage

Hi Guys,
Do I have an issue with my android os? Seems to be keeping my phone awake and downloading a lot over WiFi. I have no idea why, but I think it's killing my battery life. I am lucky to get 4 hours SOT.
Post yours for comparison

Yes true, the screen shots are from the same day and why would the battery percentage matter? the battery graph is to show how android os might be keeping my phone awake even when the screen is off.
it would instead be helpful if you could tell me what your Android OS usage is? Or how you get such good battery life?
I did a clean install using flashtool (wiped everything) with the RU firmware.
Do you have Google backup on?

Yes I did have it on. I have turned it off along with uninstalling Facebook and turning off google now. so I will see how my phone performs today..
I have the same issues. Yesterday my screen on time was 2.5 hours and the Android OS consumed most of my battery (more than screen) keeping my phone awake for more than 7 hours. I barley made it through the day

I performed a full software repair via PC companion and cleared the cache partition too. I am presuming it might be that because i am essentially "starting again" the phone has to re-adjust to my usage patterns.
But it should not affect the battery life by that much! I am so mad about this update.
my android os is 25% active
it seems like the radio mobile active bug is gone in MM, but we have now a "android os active bug"

Very high android system battery drain

Hi, I have my s7 edge for 3 months and my battery life is less and less big. My android system is taking a lot of the battery life but I let you see that in the screenshots.

I looked for the solution and I saw that some of the users of s7 edge reset their phone and the issue was gone bit it didn't work for me.
Thank you in advance.
This topic has been discussed ad nauseam in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/s7-edge/help/how-experiencing-android-battery-drain-t3327730
There has not been a clear solution that works for everyone. 18% seems to be normal for most. I am usually around that and can get above 5 hrs of SOT with 24 hours total. I would focus on other ways to improve battery life. There is other app or process that is causing your problems. For example, it looks like Good Lock is using a lot of battery in the screen shot you posted. When I used it, it only used about 2-3% battery. The location specific settings in that app can drain a lot of battery. I would also try and see if something is keeping your phone awake. There probably is something and that is what is most likely draining your battery.
First thing would be turn off google back-up if you have not. That was a major source of wakelocks for me. Also try a battery monitor like GSAM or Better battery Stats to get a better picture of what is going on.

Thank you for your help, I will try your solution. If the issue persists I will go to my carreer to see what they will they about that.
As already posted there is a thread for this here

so I'll close this one as it probably should have been in Q&A

What's up with the battery life and "Cell standby" percentage?

I bought this 9T a few months ago. I think the SOT I had at first was about 10 hours, which is OK but I've seen better, but now after 3 months of usage it barely achieves 5 hours and the "Cell standby" rating—which I'm not sure what it stands for—is always at the top of the battery drainage list.
What's wrong with this phone? This makes no sense.

This is the cell/modem connexion 4G network.
You made use 2 times 20% of heavy data use in very short time (check it on the curve).
Check the same application you did with a wifi connexion because it can be your network 4G that is weak and lead to this heavy drain.
There are some draining problems in Miui lately. Something is causing this, that's the reason I skipped Xiaomi this time after years of using it.
"TechTablets" review of MiNote 10 also confirmed this. Basically you buy a phone with a beefy battery, but not getting the expected battery life.
I tried everything to sort this out, but it wasn't giving me any results. This was not the case with previous Xiaomi devices, like Mi8...

You said "lately". Yes but latest android 10 eu rom have a much better behavior.
Nlp wakelock is almost stopped and standby drain is lower than 0.5%/h (without AOD)
AOD at day consume some 1% additional.
MiNote10 was reported heavy consumer because of the camera needs.
they will improve at Xiaomi, not overnight but surely.
You'll come back to MIUI.
