Is it possible to get audio playing over the USB port from the HD2?
With the iPhones, the audio market have a line out dock which takes the proprietory plug the iPhone uses to charge and sync and outputs to a 3.5mm jack. This bypasses the internal amplification circuitry so that you can use an external amplifier for a better signal to your earphones/headphones/speakers of choice.
I was wondering if it was possible to do this with the HTC HD2.
Can anyone offer any insight?
I'm no expert however from what I know, I think the iPhones dock connector has more than just regular USB connections inside. It may have some audio connections and possibly even a video connection. So I'm guessing the audio actually gets sent through that rather than via USB.
However, I imagine that you could send audio via USB but at a guess I think it might require a processor is some description at the other end to take the audio and send it to the speakers.
This may be totally in the wrong direction but I believe it is probably along these lines

It's most certainly a question for those of the XDA Community who know the ins and outs of the USB port and what it can actually do.
I'd love to think that it is possible. Whilst I'm happy with the output of the HD2 sound quality-wise, the mere thought that it 'could' be better intrigues me.
Can anyone help explain if it can be done, how it can be done or if it can't be done, why it can't be done?
Just to get a bit more info, where were you thinking the USB audio would be used? Like through a PC and then to it's speakers, or do you have some MicroUSB audio dock thing? I imagine whether it is possible or not depends on where you want the audio to go to.
I imagine if it was through a PC then it would be a matter of software, and therefore be possible. But I don't know about a dock situation.

From the HD2's USB port into a portable amplifier (3.5mm jack) then onto a pair of IEM's.
I guess it is also plausible that it could go from the HD2's USB port to a USB DAC/Amp then out onto a pair of IEM's but that kind of DAC/Amp doesn't come cheaply and then there's a whole driver issue to contend with, possibly.
This is strictly to improve audio in a portable capacity, as iPhone users seem to have been able to do for quite some time.
Alright then, beyond my scope mate sorry we need other developers to check this out I think.

I do not understand your question and do not see how Bluetooth A2DP would help at all.

I know the following must be in place before USB class audio will work:
ALSA drivers in the kernel
USB host
USB OTG
and if all of that is in, then in theory USB audio should work.
Jelly Bean makes this official, which is nice. but many of us still use CM7, especially Tyween Typhoons, for stability, and it would be awesum if it worked in there, although to be honest I am waiting for the final CM7.2 before I test again.
Is it possible to reroute the headphone jack via software so it behaves as line in?

seems to be Mono sound + Mic; but I believe the Dx supports Stereo sound + Mic if you have the right Plug/cables.
Should just be a matter of making/finding the correct cable to work as a line in.
A little more information on what you are looking to do would be more helpful, recording from a wired input rather than built in microphones? Use your phone as a amplifier/speaker?
Well, I've been playin with 4-tracks lite and thought how nice it would be to be able to record some loops from another device. Then I got to thinkin about midi I/O as well thru the hdmi port or maybe the power port (hadn't asked that question yet
..thought I'd start small). Stereo isn't really necessary ...mono with panning is fine. I was toying with the concept of developing a nicely appointed music workstation app.
I have these brilliant ideas that turn into silly ideas after a nights sleep and the realization that software development will consume all my songwriter /production time. So thanks for the the tips...I was not aware of the mic portion of the hheadset...obviously proof of concept.

Humm, so i thought id ask something about what you can and can't do with usb on nexus 7. To start off with, i've built a simple rig on my car for this tablet, to work as multimedia interface. And it works awesome. The one thing that bugs me, is that the sound quality from the 3,5mm headphone jack going into my car stereo auxiliary input, isn't as good as the USB input on my car stereo.
This leads to the actual question, would it be even close to possible, to have a "virtual" .mp3 file or something like this, "mounted" as the usb? Like, when you plug the usb cord between car audio usb <--> nexus 7, the car audio would think the device has only one track, but that would be like a live stream of the tablets sound interface? I have absolutely no experience in anykind of coding and thus im here to ask you. I might be way out of boundaries on what can be done, you tell me!

Just got a Sony sbh20 stereo bluetooth headset (Review) And its great plays my music from my phone wirelessly, makes calls etc. It has 3.5 mm output so it can be hooked up to any speakers with 3.5mm jack.
However being a gutarist and an xda forum member im just not happy with what it can do out of the box.
Is it possible to turn the 3.5mm output into an input so i can use this for wireless guitar playing, perhaps with it paired to my phone which would then be hooked up to my speakers.
Basically i want a bluetooth guitar.
Any ideas or comments on how this may be achieved or if this is even possible.
Another concept that may work would be to use my phone itself as an amp transmitting via bluetooth. Probobly easier to impliment. Any ideas if this exists
No it is not possible, and it's also completely and utterly pointless, since you can buy Bluetooth transmitters for next to nothing more or less anywhere

Far from pointless. It is a mod that involves doing something cool. Just because some companies make a product that can do what the OP is looking to do and for a cheap price does not mean that the OP should not try. If we all just purchased stuff that just works then we would have a world with a bunch of idiots that know nothing. And just wants to be solely ammused via You tube videos of dumb garbage. Oh wait, that is the vast majority of this worlds population. This is an Android forum where people do things the hard way so that they can just know.
I could have purchased a great PC case for not to much money. And v en ry little time spent earning said money. But I decided to mod a MAC G5 case. Pointless? No, far from it. This is truly my computer. Here are some pictures.
And how about my cars factory radio? Sure I could have installed a low level converter. Or installed an aftermarket head unit. No, I found the low levels signal circuits and installed RCA connectors on the back of my factory deck.
Sounds like this is how the OP wants to roll.
So OP roll on. Ill look into the setup you are looking to mod and let you know if it can be done and how easily it can be accomplished.
Edit. Yes, it can be done. You will have to mod the input output circuit at the headphone jacknor somewhere on the board. I will say this. Be extremely patient and use a very very good magnifying glass. Or your phone when soldering. And lots of light. What I did was use an app called overlays and created an overlay that put a flashlight widget whennI opened my camera app. This allowed me to permanently activate the flash LED and use the camera as a microscope when soldering my LG tones to act as an incar bluetooth adapter. Sadly though I broke the setup. But, I just may get what you have there and use that in my car next. Though only of it allows for hi definition audio throughput. Any way. Good luck and take pictures if you go through with it.
And one more thing. Like you stated. You could mod a headset to connect to your guitar and then stream the sound from your phone to the Bluetooth headset that is connected to your amp/head.

Thanks for getting back to me these bluetooth units are going pretty cheap in vodafone stores in ireland right now (25 euro where evreywhere else including sonys website has them for 50) so i might puick up another one to mod, not much experience with soldering anything more complicated than audio cables but it will be a challenge, also propss on the g5 case its definately one of the best designed PC cases with the new mac pros coming out there could be a fresh influx of these second hand soon

I decided that a Nexus 7 car install is the best option for having Android in the car. At first I considered buying an App Radio 3 and using AR Unchained to just mirror my phone on the head unit. But after learning that Pioneer's AR3 head units are less then stellar I decided to abandon that option. Besides, who wants to connect their phone to their stereo everytime they get in the car?
Next I considered buying one of those Chinese made head units with Android 4.2 but for some reason they don't seem to make any that fit my car. Not to mention that after seeing some pretty decent reviews of them on this forum I still feel leery about buying one.
So that leaves me with the only option of installing a tablet in my car.
Right now everything in my car is completely stock. I figured the best way to connect the tablet to my car's speakers is through the replacement of the factory stereo through an aftermarket one, possibly the Pioneer DEH-80PRS which I'm currently considering.
This poses a few problems, the current stereo is a double din so I have the space to work with. However I would have relocate the aftermarket stereo somewhere else. Either behind the tablet like some others have done or in the glove box, something I really don't want to do.
But by doing this I would lose access to the physical volume control on the head unit, I'm trying to figure a way around this but I haven't come to any reasonable conclusions as of yet. I do have steering wheel controls so this is an option, however it doesn't really help much when you have a passenger that want's to control the volume.
Next is the sound quality, I was really hoping that I could plug the Nexus 7 in the head unit through the USB port and have audio transfer that way like with an iPod. But from what I've researched online it seems that this is not possible? Atleast not without a custom ROM anyways, please correct me if I'm wrong.

I've thought this over and over with the plethora of android devices that hang around my house. The best way I think, is to buy a midrange amp with 4chans and run a splitter from the 1/8inch jack.

Keep in mind that physically installing the tablet in the car without an option for removal will most likely expose it to extreme heat and cold which is highly detrimental to the battery health!
Throwing out bad batteries is terribly damaging to then environment in the case you would like to get a new device also.
Please consider having a stand/deck/clamp that allows you to remove it when you leave the car with you; as this will prolong the life of the battery and keep toxic garbage out of landfills!

Which version Nexus 7? 2012 or 2013, TIMUR's Rom seems to be the one everyone is using for a fixed install. I am in process of doing a fixed installation for a 2012 Nexus 7 in my weekend fun car, I am using Timurs Rom, I have a Direct HD Tuner and an app a guy on Rootzwiki made for it, I am using a Behringer UCA202 USB DAC to handle the audio.
I too have the Volume control challenge and I don't have the steering wheel controls, the other piece is with the HDTuner, the audio bypasses the Nexus for the tuner so I needed some sort of adjustment. I am still working it out, but many opt for the Clarion EQS746, and I have seen several other brands that seem to be the same..
I am curious how you plan to handle all the integrated info on your radio (Trip, Oil Life, etc) I know that is a stopping poitn for me on my 2007 Malibu MAXX SS, not sure how I duplicate that info and I think if I took the radio out completely I would have other issues

I'm planning on buying the 2013 version. Timur's rom isn't available for the 2nd gen Nexus 7 yet.
I'm not worried about losing the driver information center in the Malibu. If I really wanted to keep it I could buy a metra double din dash kit that includes the driver information center module but I don't feel like spending $240.

I don't really live in an area that has wild temperature swings. My car's windows are already tinted and I use a shade on the front windshield so I'm not too worried about it.
I'm more worried about thievery, making it removable especially in a 2006 Malibu would require some sort of modification to the bezel.

2013 LTE model
Timurs fi kernel + services (awesome and worth the 43.00, free in may iirc)
Uca202 usb dac
Amp will be alpine ktp445u (fosgate pbr 300x4 would be awesome too but I already have the alpine)
Joycon exr for steering wheel controls.
No need for aftermarket deck, unless you want fm (I haven't listened to fm in 10+ years)

I wasn't aware that Timur's rom was available for the 2013 Nexus 7 yet, I thought it wasn't going to be available til May?
The aftermarket head unit makes it's easier to integrate into my car's audio system without having to buy a whole lot of extras. The car has 104k miles, I'm not sure I wan't to do alot of modding to it at this point.
Plus, the head unit would serve it's purpose when I have passengers that wan't to connect their phone/mp3 player to listen to their own music. You can't do that with a tablet, atleast not that I know of...correct me if I'm wrong.
I'd also have bluetooth hands free calling with the head unit, not that I'd ever use it anyways.

I have factory hands free and I only use it occasionally (and I drive a stick!) I may get a parrot kit or similar, but undecided so far. The uca202 has an additional input that could be used for it. You can pick up the dac and amp for about 150 on Amazon and not have to worry about stashing it somewhere.
I can't argue your points about passengers, I usually just music we all like anyway.
Timurs kernel is up and running, there is a thread in general I believe. You have to pay now, 35euros with WiFi Mac (kernel linked to that device only) or 50euros w/o mac.
I was using it on the WiFi version, but returned it because Verizon had the lte on sale last weekend for 49.99! I contacted timur and he changed it up for me from wifi to lte within hours!. Been a few updates so far and he sends out emails with notification and a change log.
I think it was worth the 43.00 I spent for it, allows me to test everything, and get most of my stuff figured out.
I'm just stuck on a mount that would look good, I don't want to hack up my dash, because in 2 years I will probably update to something newer. I bought a cheap snap on case, but it fits too well!
All together I have spent only about 230 including the tablet. (I had the amp installed already)

$230? That's all you spent?! Perhaps maybe I'm over thinking this, that $49 you spent for the Nexus 7 LTE, obviously that was a two year contract right?
The reason why I'm thinking of buying just WiFi version is because I have a GSIII with a grandfathered unlimited data plan back from 2010 when Verizon was still offering unlimited data. My idea was to just tether that to the tablet considering that it's unlimited anyways. What solution did you use to keep your tablet powered while in use? It seems like that's the biggest PITA from what I've read.
Would you mind taking some pictures of your install if it's not any trouble?

I plan to build a box the same size the factory radio, put a spacer between it and the hard plastic case and I will just snap the tablet into it, plug in the cable and go. Timurs kernel lets you hotplug audio devices so no rebooting required.

Search for subaru nexus 7 install, there is one where they built an acrylic case, mounted a case to it and clipped in nx7. I plan to do the same, only the case will be on the outside so I can easily remove it.

5.1 surround sound setup
I'm doing similar in a 04 f150 .. Instead of my headphone jack I'm using the HDMI audio. Have a HDMI audio extractor, that has digital audio outs , I'm running the fiberoptic audio to a small surround sound decoder, 5.1 surround, the decoder has 6 sets of RCAs I'm running to the amplifiers. I'm using a small Bluetooth keyboard with track pad to control volume and what not.. The hdmi audio extractor has a HDMI out put also so I can add a monitor or a projector for a mobile drive-in experience. Between the tab, the slimport, HDMI audio splitter, surround decoder and keyboard, I have about 320-350 invested. Not bad considering the resolution, the navigation, and everything else you'd spend well over a grand or more with any alpine and not have near the capabilities. Do you have a like as to the steps to remove the bezel on your malibu? I have no idea how to remove that piece on my 2007 and the dash looks the same..

How do you have your Dac set up. I am powering my tablet from a usb hub and when i plug my dac in i get nothing, no lights nada. But my N7 charges just fine. Can you help out here . Also i am running my dac to an aftermarket head unit
