LG G5 RS988 Firmware Update Released - LG G5 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hello,
I just received the Firmware update the Software version is now RS98811b it looks pretty stable so far anyone else received this update that wants to share anything?

Wife's phone got the notification the day we bought it (Sunday) and I told her to hold off in case a root exploit is found in the old firmware that is patched in this new version. (Assuming anybody is even actively working on it anymore - I don't even know who is now that jcase has moved on, I haven't been on IRC for a while.)

Hm, interesting, I already love how snappy it feels, the battery seems a bit more efficient but until I test it for days I can't say for certain. The one area that really stands out though is the touchscreen feels much more sensitive, which was never a problem, but now it feels so smooth I couldn't go back to the old G5's scrolling speed.

I'm really trying to hold off, but if it really improves performance that much, I might go for it...

Here is the changelog and it does feel much snappier. The auto brightness is also much better than before.

The update is for lg g5 europe or for T-mobile Lg g5?

I got this on my RS988, USA unlocked version.

For anyone holding of on this update do to worrying about it tripping the anti rollback counter it does not. My girlfriends phone rs988 just got the update and I went into the hidden menu and checked the anti rollback number and it is still at 0. This is for version RS98811b that was just released.

I just got my G5 RS988 today and I just let the RS98811b update proceed. Can you share how to access this "hidden menu" so I can see this rollback counter?
Thanks..

Yes goto your dialer app and type the following in:
*#546368#*988#
Then click on SVC menu, then click on version info and scroll all the way down and you're looking for the anti rollback version.

Does anyone know if new Android Nougat update increments the anti-rollback counter?

TMo G4 - h81110n running like a BOSS.

Maybe it's a placebo effect of a recent reboot, but I can't help but feel like my kickass G4 has become even more kickass with the h81110n update!
Its like going from regular Saiyan to Super Saiyan. Anyone else experiencing improvements in device performance, real or imagined?
Lmao yeah i notice the screen is more responsive
Sent from my LG-H811 using Tapatalk
Agreed. After the update it feels like a brand new phone.
I did disable the Tmobile and LG crap even before the update, but after the update, it seems much responsier...
Stock Keyboard is now usable (faster)
Very true the phone so way better now in all ways.
yes i noticed some improvements as well, even though tmo says 10n was a messaging update, i'm sure there is more in there than that
I have to say that's true, the screen actually works now, stagefight has been fixed as well.
Much snappier screen. The scrolls registered as taps before this was really starting to drive me nuts.
That's awesome guys. I'm hoping for an update from Verizon (I have the vs986) because my experience has been awful as far as missed taps and swipes registering as taps. I've tried every fix around. I'm eagerly awaiting an update or an unlocked bootloader so someone can fix this with a custom Rom.
But I'm happy the other variants are having success. It gives hope.
I'm on H815 but I assume this is the same update on Aug 17 which contains the stagefright fix and touchscreen fix
i.e. same fix as the EUR 10E or TWN 10C.
The swiping is more buttery smooth and the knock code unlock is working much better
Hopefully, it's only a matter of time before all G4 variants get the update. The touchscreen fixes really change the entire experience of the phone to the point where you're almost wondering if it's real, especially if a touch-deficient G4 has been your daily driver since its release. That's how badly conditioned we've become in the last four months. I can't imagine how warped the user experience of the OnePlus One must have been. Anyway, I'm glad LG finally figured it out, so now it's up to the carriers to expediently produce their update packages.
I had recently started becoming a silent detractor to any of these supposed touchscreen fixes that have been posted because none of them had worked for me. While I'm thankful for the efforts by everyone who has attempted and shared a fix, they were all at best 80% fixes that lasted for no more than a few hours, and very well could have been straight placebos for all we can truly tell. T-Mobile 10n finally breaks the :fingers-crossed: cycle.
I think they also fixed the video ois on 10n. I noticed it is smoother and not jittery.
Ssjgssj or it didn't happen.
Is there any way to download and install this manually? I'm still waiting. My phone is running horrendously and I need a fix

You can try this as well:

I just picked up this g4 and ran the update to 81110n on the way home. Then, like an idiot went to root (using these instructions http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/orig-development/root-tmo-vzw-intl-variants-soon-root-lg-t3164765) using a 81110h pre-rooted img.
Now, I get a "security error" and phone won't boot into system. How bad did I screw myself?

not at all, just redo it using this 10n pre-rooted system image
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62560535&postcount=1972
make sure you change the line from that thread that copies the system.img to your phone from this:
dd if=/data/media/0/system.rooted.H81110h.img bs=8192 seek=65536 count=548352 of=/dev/block/mmcblk0
to this:
dd if=/data/media/0/rootedsystem.img bs=8192 seek=65536 count=548352 of=/dev/block/mmcblk0
and make sure you put the img file on the root of your internal sd card.

How to return to 6.0.1 S7 from 7.0, ODIN

Hi! I see so many different answers regarding how to return to an older firmware but most of them are for people who are rooted or have custom Roms? I updated to Nougat and encoutered some issues with critical apps I need and now want to return to the stock firmware the phone came with. Do I just download the firmware and run Odin with one of those guides?

Hmm, surprised there were no replies to this query. I just unwittingly took the Nougat update today and broke FoxFi.....and have found the same basic thing...that there are lots of instructions out there for downgrading, but none seem to specifically refer to non-rooted VZW users.
I downloaded API3 6.0.1 firmware but ODIN fails when trying to flash.
Am I just stuck on Nougat? If so, time to sell this piece of junk!

Why not use the debloat rom and native tethering? More than one way to skin a cat.
Well that doesn't really answer the question, but I did the root thing a few months ago and it was way too much of a performance and battery hit to stick with.
Trust me, if I could root, debloat, and have close to the same performance, I'd jump back on the train. This is the first android phone I've ever had that I used without root... Dating back to the HTC Hero! I hate Verizon and Samsung for locking this thing down... And believe this will be my last Samsung phone.
But for now, I need to know if, how to get back to MM

The Hybrid ROM is not-rooted. You get the performance of the stock kernel with a very well debloated system. It also has the hotspot fix implemented. The ROM even passes SafetyNet. I haven't downgraded to MM from Nougat, so I can't give any insight on that part.
Okay then... That's very interesting.... I haven't kept up with XDA since I gave up on root.... I know nothing about this hybrid rom option but will definitely be reading into this!
Thanks

I have it running on two phones and have no gripes.
I too updated to Nougat, and I'm not happy with it at all. The calendar app, dialer/contacts app, and notification shade are all worse IMO. I'm really interested in going back to stock Marshmallow. Can I use the Hybrid ROM to do that? IS there any way to go back to stock Verizon Marshmallow, but also NOT get the OTA update reminder in the notification shade?
Thanks for any insight/help on this!

The hybrid rom is just 7.0 debloated for vzw and tmo, but working on all us s7 flay/edge variants. The only way back would be odin if Samsung didn't lock the bootloader to not allow a downgrade
So....in other words I'm up the creek without a paddle. Maybe I'll just buy an unlocked one and sell mine.

The unlocked ones aren't bootloader unlocked, just carrier unlocked. So, when they get the N update, they will also most likely not be able to downgrade. I would suggest the hybrid and staying with the demon you have than to worry about root and associated apps, but to each their own. There are free themes that can help with things and apps galore to customize most of the phone.

well that's exactly how I felt the day the update attacked my phone........but I gave the hybrid ROM a chance.........and these folks here were right.......I'm actually far better off now than I was before the 7.0 update.
Granted, I speak from the perspective of an unlimited data user, and having the ability to wirelessly tether with the native app alone is HUGE for me.
But my phone does seem considerably faster and smoother now.
Had to figure out how to get things the way I wanted them....like to disable "heads up / peek" notifications.
I don't love the white look either....wish there was a dark mode, but that's really my only complaint. This switch to the hybrid ROM, IMO, is a big step up from my MM days with this phone. :good:

Does this change the colors of the notification shade and such? I don't use any stock launchers, icons, etc....I use Nova Launcher
-EDIT-
Okay so I went ahead and looked into it a little further....perhaps I will find one that gives me what I want.....a little skeptical of custom themes in general....boy how I miss the simplistic Holo days!
Thanks guys for the input! I'll consider the hybrid rom. It might be what I do. Can the hybrid rom have the contacts app and calendar app from the stock marshmallow rom? If I had those I could probably live with the rest.
Just thought I'd update people who come here looking to do the same thing. You CAN use ODIN to reinstall the stock 6.0.1 image even after you've updated to Nougat. You have to turn on the hidden "developer options" in the S7's settings first, but after that it works perfectly. Then you just need to disable the packages that download/notify you about the OTA update.
Thanks goes to CVertigo1, and everyone else here, for helping me out with this! So happy to be back on Marshmallow! Maybe in a few months they'll change the apps/UI back and I'll try Nougat again. One can hope!
OK, here's the latest. I rolled back to 6.0.1 just fine, but unfortunately I believe Samsung locked the system with the late September update. That means I can't use ADB or Package Disabler Pro to hide/block/disable the OTA update packages. So, I can't disable the packages that stop the OTA update unless I rollback to a ROM before they locked the system. Unfortunately again, the baseband is different for the older updates, so I can't rollback that far.
So, now I have Marshmallow back, but I have the annoying notification update that won't go away too. Still looking for a way around it without root. If anyone has any ideas please let me know!
"Thanks Samsung for locking our phones!" -said no one ever
Alright... last update I think. I found a different app that gets the job done. It's called BK Package Disabler. After you install it you can do a search for "sdm". Disable both of those packages, and the OTA notification goes away, and it doesn't look for any new ones either.
Still on 6.0, but daily SYSTEM UPDATE to 7.0 occurring. Can I shut them off to keep 6.0 for a few more months?
S7 on Verizon
Yeah, if you download BK Disabler from the app store you can stop the notification about the update. Just search for "sdm" in the app. Two packages should pop up. If you disable both of them you should be set.
HOWEVER, I don't know much about this app, so I am not endorsing it. I used it and it worked, but I wasn't able to find a lot of information about it on the forums. So, use at your own risk.

Hi bro, does LG G5 H820 AT&T have update 7.0?

H990ds TWN Security patch?

I haven't received the last security patch in my V20. I have the H990ds TWN variant.

You probably won't receive it either.
Go to this thread:

From the given link download the following firmware to update:
H990ds10e_OPEN_SG_DS_OP_0314.kdz
Follow the instructions in the OP to update with the above firmware you downloaded. It's easy, but be aware the .kdz file is something like 2.8GB.
You will then have the latest security patch for your V20 variant, 1 March 2017.

This a way to update, but keep in mind that you will NOT get any OS updates anymore. That is because your phone is not original branded anymore.
Correct!
But we haven't been getting updates anyway.
So I'm happy with this, and occasionally checking for future updates and installing when found.

Most regions have recent updates till march/april 2017, except the TWN version. I am afraid that we are part of the very unlucky few..........
Yeah but we still have an incredible piece of kit.

But what are the differences between these software versions (a,b,c....,g)
As far as I know the only benefit I gained was the security patch update.
I've not had any official OTA update from LG.
Also I have no idea what the position is with other variants.

I compared the system files between the C(TWN) and E(SGN) version with FX Explorer. A lot of system files have a update. So it is absolutly more than just security updates.

OK, in a nutshell....
Having only read online reviews I liked the V20 more.
Then after picking up my G6 and handling it for about 90 minutes I wasn't so sure....
Until the owner of this V turned up. 5 minutes with this and I knew the G was going.
So, after less than 2 hours with my G I exchanged it for this V20, LG Quick Cover and £150 cash ?
That's my story. And I'm well pleased.
Only one thing would make this my best phone ever.... yep, root. The amount of stuff I've done with my rooted Z2 over the past 3 years has been awesome and great fun, and it's still a brilliant phone.
Maybe one day.....
V10e-TWN-XX arrived yesterday ?
But VOLTE which they mentioned in release notes for V10e-TWN is nowhere that I can find. Perhaps it is not showing since my carrier at this moment doesn't support it.
I'm not sure anyone has the VoLTE. I haven't.
Although it's not a priority for me its still annoying that LG's official description seems to be plain wrong. But sadly not surprising.
the feature is available if your carrier supports voice over lte future.
I personally checked with a Vodafone sim card

Jeez. Luckly im in WETA Rom 10k update i dont think im planning to restore to factory just to move to 10p. I have the feeling LG will becoming like Samsung and the Knox system. Given the fact that they are already making the LG V30 to be more like the other flagships (no removable battery and all that) or we dont have to go that far, we can already see it on the g6. They are practically doing the same thing that samsung did. From Samsung galaxy s1 to s5 it was removable battery and there were some features that are not present anymore from the s6 to the present s version. Same thing with the Note series. Now if we take a look at LG, from LG G1 to G5 it was removable battery among other features that are not found any more from the g6 to probably the possible g version. Same thing happens with the V series. From V10 to V20 it is removable battery among other features that wont be found anymore on the V30. Rumors are there wont be a second screen on the V30 (and i thought that's one of the things that made the phone different from other flagships). But well... If they are making changes to external and some internal things to make it look like other flagships, why wouldnt they apply somethig like knox too new updates or for the brand new LG V30 about to come? . Lets see when the V30 actually comes out,
got the kdz for 10p update will upload in a bit

I think can`t be only hope is Root
I might have the solution for root. But I need someone who can test it out for me.
If you are on "H91810p" and have your bootloader unlocked (if not I can tell you how to do it), let me know so that I can walk you through the steps. It going to be bit involved so not for first timers.

i think you should create a new thread asking for volunteers... not sure how many you would get from here, although, why can't you try it and see if it works?

I only need one person for now. I will try it on my phone but I don't have my bootloader unlocked. I could unlock it but it will wipe everything on my phone in the process which I don't want to do right now. I'm 99% sure that this method will work on 10p.
