Dim/Lifeless Screen - Fire HD 8 and HD 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone's Fire HD'S 8" screen become quite dim & lifeless over time? I can crank the brightness up real high but it still looks washed out.

IPS screen is warm

It seems like my screen is is warmer than ideal. See attached screenshot with an LED backlit laptop screen at 100% brightness, a Nexus S at 50%, an iPhone 4 at 50%, and the N7 at 50%.
Anyone elses warm like this?
Does anyone think this can be correctable/adjustable via kernel tweaks?

I remember my nook color was able to create all kinds of funky screen colors/temps. So yeah
I noticed that the colors are a little off on the nexus 7. Supercurio released an app before for the Tab 10.1 to calibrate display and hopefully we will have one soon for the nexus 7

I tried an app called "screen adjuster" and it helped a little bit but the problem is it uses quite a bit of CPU when it's turned on, animations become noticeably sluggish so it's only really good for testing. Anandtech did some tests on the display and found that greens are a bit undersaturated which kind of makes sense. This is why yellows in particular don't quite look right and makes the colors overall look washed out, the tint is a bit warm as well. With CM7 on my phone there are a few preset settings to choose from for display calibration that were made for particular phones like the Nexus One, it would be great if someone could fix this, either with an app or via root, or a custom rom.
Also, if you are going to try the app, I suggest you set the blue to about 6% and you'll see the tint is much less warm afterward, but it won't fix the saturation.
Actually, I think the other devices you have are particularly cool. The IPS screen like my Nook and Nexus have is much higher contrast, and doesn't exhibit the somewhat blue look I've noticed on many TFT LCD screens which use LED back lights. For example, my Droid 4 has a VERY cool shaded screen because it isn't just RGB, but rather RGBW and the cool-toned light of the LEDs shows very clearly.
I much prefer the warmer color temp of the Nexus 7 to the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0's coolness. The N7's whites are white at much lower screen brightnesses, rather than the frosty blues of the Tab 2.

Why colors are not vivid in this screen

Why colors are not vivid in this screen they look a little wached out
What u guys think?
They don't appear as oversaturated as the ipad 3/4 or OLED screens but it looks so bright that it makes up for it. I know the actual nit ratings are not the highest but this thing looks BRIGHT on the auto setting.
With the brightness all the way up it seems washed out. Just turn the brightness down. It's overkill for the most part, and seriously cuts down the battery life. Compared to my galaxy nexus, the blacks aren't nearly as good, but I'd say the color is more natural. Cheers.
When more kernels are released i'm sure there will be color controls. I'm personally waiting for franco kernel. He just posted on his google+ inquirying about releasing a test version of his kernel. should not be too long until we have the ability to change gamma and color density patience!

Thats cause this uses an actual LCD screen, unlike the Galaxy nexus. Honestly the blacks are one of the only decent things about the GNex screen. Custom kernels had to fix some major color issues with most people's devices. And as the person above me said, we will soon have kernels for this device too that allow color, contrast, and gamma options so anyone who is unsatisfied with colors at default can tweak their settings around.

I second this. Stock colors on the gnex make it look like a cigar stain. Think I stole that line from somewhere. Anyway they are bad. I've tweaked the colors on my gnex and now the diff between the two devices is less. I personally like oled, but the n10 screen IMHO is far more color accurate which may at times make it seem washed out.
Its kind of like too much bass. An untrained ear might say too much bass sounds better then a flat curve.

The colours are fine.. Its the colours on your oled screens that are overly saturated
I have to agree with the OP. Blacks are really bad. Also is everyone else screen on the warmer side (slightly yellow)?

The screen produces a very poor rendition of the NTSC colour gamut. I have professionally calibrated equipment at home to compare. Gray scale is good. Gamma is OK. Color accuracy is poor. Very antique looking. This is similar to how Panasonic used to calibrate their displays. The contrast is average. Overall the screen is simply mediocre with minimal glaring issues. This screen isn't for showing off; its for getting work done. Bright, sharp, and bland looking. Hopefully a dev unlocks some mdnie hacks that offer control over the displays calibration. A couple tweaks could definitely improve the perceived contrast and improve color accuracy. I've had a number of nexus devices over the years. They're very no frills. So I don't think we'll see many tools for improving the screen. Maybe some wonky color gamma tweaks.
Supercurio I'm calling you out for some assistance.

BTW I have a galaxy nexus with an amoled display. With some adjustments its a superb screen. The gamma is too high and colours are over saturated, however the colour rendition is far more accurate than the nexus 10. The blues and reds on the nexus 10 are way off the mark. Blues are more cyan, they are washed out, not deep enough. The reds are very under saturated. The greens are muddy, slightly brown. Yellows are over saturated and magenta is slightly under saturated. The display just doesn't compare to the new iPad in the slightest. Oddly enough, sharpness is the least important display characteristic for a quality display. Humans are much more sensitive to contrast and colour. The nexus 10 display has its priorities mixed up. On the other hand, I still love this thing and wouldn't trade it for any other tablet on the market. Its graphics performance is beastly and just outclasses most other tablets in regards to build quality.

There's an app called Screen Adjuster to adjust rgb and contrast. Root required. I wonder if that may help. I'm not rooted so I can't really try it. And I may end up returning it so didn't wanna muck with it for now.

Calling the ipad 4 oversaturated is just ignorant.
Not sure if its placebo but I updated to 4.2.1 and my build # is JOP40D and the screen isnt as dull anymore. Blacks are darker although still not as dark as my tf700. Anyone else notice this after the update?

Autobrightness increases max brightness?

So I've read a bunch of reviews of the S4 and they ding it a fair bit for its screen brightness. Anandtech, AndroidCentral, Engadget, Giz....they all say the screen is dim compared to newer LCD. I'm sure some of you have seen Displaymate's review of the S4 screen. They gave it an excellent review, but what stood out to me is that the screen is MUCH brighter on autobrightness than whats possible by adjusting it with the slider (from 355 nits to 475 nits, iphone being 556 nits). I have not seen any other S4 reviewer point this out, not even Anandtech, who are usually very technical with their reviews and go to great lengths to discover and point out all the caveats of devices. Im wondering, did most reviewers miss this or is Displaymate somehow wrong about there assessment. Those with the S4, or better yet an S4 and a iPhone/HTC One, care to shed some light on this?

It is much brighter on autobrightness under very strong environmental light. You can't achieve the full brightness under normal condition.

If it reaches maximum brightness only under sunlight, I'm ok with that, and I would imagine most people wouldn't mid as well. What I don't get is why reviewers seemed to have either not noticed this or left it out of their articles. I don't really think Samsung did the right thing here by limiting the brightness level when set manually, but Its also misleading for all the reviews to say that the maximum brightness of the S4 is around 200-250 nits lower than the competition, if its in fact about 100 nits lower under conditions where it truly matters
Subscribed. Also, per the Anandtech review, then screen mode affects display brightness as well.
Currently in auto, adaptive until I learn more.

Does anyone know if we can tap into the maximum brightness through root or otherwise?

Yup, Anandtech pointed out that "Movie" mode is brighter and has the truest colors
The movie mode looks like crap, lol

Personal opinion. I actually prefer movie mode since it makes it look more like an LCD screen. To each their own, though.

I've always preferred LCDs too, but going from standard to movie is tough.
I'm all for natural colors, too. Either way, even on standard, colors are more natural than my s3.

did anyone notice a purple/pink ish haze on the bottom portion of the screen? or is it a defect?
Nope. Mine is uniform. Pics?

If we root the S4, is it possible to reach the same brightness allowed by the auto brightness? Is there a utility to make it so we can get to the Mac brightness without the auto brightness or by modifying it somehow?

How's the screen for everyone?

Everyone who's owned a SIII knows the screen is completly useless when it comes to the sun being shined at it. Cannot see anything. What about the S4? Same issue? Just curious about to buy one
Also how's the screen for you all? =)

I haven't found it too bad, I have found the auto brightness to adjust really well. It hasn't been too sunny here though

I don't have an S4 yet but a report by displaymate a couple of days ago showed that when you have auto brightness turned on the AMOLED screen is just as bright as the brightest LCDs out there (around 475 nits). Of course you can't set this amount of brightness manually since you would overheat your phone and cause screen burn in if you did. That is why Samsung only allows this for when you have on auto brightness. Since as soon as you go back indoors it will lower the brightness back down.
Long time S3 user (launch) and just picked up the S4 yesterday. The screen, in terms of quality, offers a noticeable improvement over the S3. I migrated everything over from one phone to the other and there's no mistaking which is which. The total difference, however, is less than the difference we saw going in the S2->S3 IMO.
In bright light, unfortunately, they're basically the same as far as I can tell. The auto-brightness setting seems more conservative on the S4 (possibly to help with thermal issues), but I haven't had a chance to crank it up all the way out in the sun.
If screen brightness matters a lot to you, I urge you to take a look at the EVO. The LCD screen on that is much improved, extremely bright as usually, and the blacks are getting considerably blacker (see anantech review). I myself played with it for a half hour but quickly jumped back on the S4 since it fits me better.
I've owned every galaxy phone since the galaxy epic. (Sprint qwerty phone) AMOLED screens are great despite no anti glare features.

Screen is great until your moving grey on a black background and then you have weird purple smears going on. Not sure if it's a faulty display or just 'how it's meant to be'

The screen is stunning! Extremely sharp with smooth text and eye popping colours, its basically like Apple's Retina display on iP5 but with AMOLED benefits on top.
In sunlight it fares well from my experience, better than S3, IMO, its a lot less reflective.
Stunning!
6 Stars.

My screen gets mega bright randomly

I have a sprint edition note4, when I'm in the sun and auto brightness is on, it looks like the contrast on my screen gets cranked up drastically, distorting any colors on my screen. Anyone else gettin this?
Yea, I would assume that this is a feature that allows the screen to be more visible is direct sunlight.
I think it helps.
I think it might be a defect, it only happens some times. I would love to hear from other people tho.
It could be the screen mode. Under display settings > screen mode > try basic instead of adaptive
Interesting, the colors seem more washed out on basic.
Basic is meant for artists that needed accurate color reproduction. The next two increase color saturation and contrast, and adaptive is meant to be used in full submit bright days. Ththe color suffers, but you can see the screen much better.
Mine does it to, I think it is a feature. It goes back to normal when out of extreme light

It is known feature. It raises brightnes almost twice of nominal in direct sunlight when auto brightnes is checked.

Feature and will also happen on any screen mode when auto brightness is enabled.
