5.5" screen on 5" body - ZenFone 2 General

Okay, so I got a ZE551ML and on the plastic that protects the screen there's that written:
5.5-inch Full HD IPS display in a 5-inch body
Now, how is that possible? How a screen can be larger than the phone body? Somebody knows what that means?

That's just marketing ! Just to promote a not-so-large design with a LCD that is "almost" same width than the body.

but isn't that wrong? there's no way a 5.5 inch screen would fit on a 5 inch body D:

That depends on your definition of "5 inch body". For example, you can probably put a 6 inch on the "5.5 inch body" of the iPhone 6 Plus .

But how is that possible? How are they measuring the inches of the body? They are measuring 5 inch minus the 5.5 inch of the screen?

It's saying the body of a 5 inch phone (Take an iPhone for example. They have HUGE bezels.)
They are saying for the same size as an iPhone with a 5 inch screen, you can get a 5.5 inch screen to fit in that same body, but lessening the bezels.
No phone that has a 5 inch screen has a 5 inch body. Typically they are around 6 inches. So, a 5.5 inch screen will fit in the body that a normal 5 inch phone would, due to Asus cutting back on bezels.

The screen is measured corner to corner lol

yeah and that's why I see no way in how a screen can have 5.5 inches inside a 5 inches body

That would be5.5" in a traditional 5" body. If you look at an iPhone 6 plus, we have the same screen size, bit the iPhone has a larger body.

what kind of glass is the HD2 screen made out of?

So my girlfriend has the motorola droid and I read that it has the gorilla glass but looks like it scratches pretty easily. so seeing how tough the screen is on the HD2, it made me wonder what it is made out of.
It's an Ultra-super-mega-scratch-resistance kind of glass
droid gorilla glass is verrrrry tough. I took my keys to it hard in a Verizon store when a rep tried to sell my friend a screen protector. Told him if i scratch it I will buy a droid and 2 screen covers one for me and one for my friend. Not one scratch. He was so impressed he was showing all the other workers. lol...if these hd2s are glass I dont think we would here any reports of scratches.
youtube hd2 scratch and see it in action!
Sapphire coated glass like on high end watches, rolex, omega...
Just don't carry diamonds in your pocket and you should be fine

nope, if it was when you turned the phone off and had a light shining on it the reflection would be blue. Hence the name Sapphire glass.. Its blue when viewed at an angle. My Invicta has it.
I read on boygenius that it had a teflon film
my omega doesn't have blue reflection but maybe i didn't turn it off lol
i don't think every watch with sapphire glass is going to have a blue reflection but even if it did, hd2's screen is flat
It's a top secret patent.....
All I can say is I hope the iPhone HD has the same glass!
Ya well guess what its not scratch proof. I have a nice scratch in the screen now from just rubbing up against car keys in my pocket... grrr.

As mentioned above, screen is not scratch proof. No need for diamonds either, I have 2 nice scratches on the bottom half of mine from Kershaw knife rubbing a little too close in the pocket.
Maybe I shouldn't put my high tech toys in the same pocket as my lethal toys...plus not wear them while at the the bar enjoying cold refreshments.
HD2 screen specs:
- TFT capacitive touchscreen, 65K colors
- 480 x 800 pixels, 4.3 inches (~217 ppi pixel density)
- Multitouch Screen
- Gorilla® Glass.
its the kind of glass that is SUPER resistant to everyday scratches ... yet SUPER breakable to everyday drops!
ive tried to scratch it with keys to show a friend ... flawless. the FIRST time i dropped it off my lap, from a seated position, wham bam broke screen for you ma'am!!! :'(

Gorilla Glass 2

Hi guys
As this is my first device with gorilla glass 2 i have no experience in this field. But on YouTube people rape their galaxy s3 screens without any damage. Is this for real? Do we need screen protectors or not?

It's scratch resistant but but scratch proof....it is resistant to materials that are softer than the screen such as keys. When it comes down to materials that are harder than the screen such as sand. ..it can get scratched.
So I would still use a screen protector if I was you.

Drop-Test on Galaxy Note II
AndroidAuthority carried out their 'Drop Test' on a Note 2 with great results.
The Note 2 is reported to have better build quality than the S3.
In the test the Note 2 was dropped 3 separate times ~ once from the pocket (2 feet), once from the midriff (4 feet) and finally from the ear (5 feet 6 inches). It passed all drop tests.
See video here.
I spit in the face of screen protectors. My Note has stood the test of time (well, 7 months or so) and the screen still has a wonderful sheen and no hints of even a hairline scratch or blemish. This will bode well for resale value as I still see this phone going for 500 bucks by private sellers.
I've had my Note II for about 12 hours and I'm blown away by how much attention to detail was paid to this thing.. the screen feels much more slippery, has an awesome feel around the edges where it's no longer 'sharp' feeling and blends right into the bezel, and the glass feels much more dense. Even the back panel has a grippier feel so I'm even less worried about dropping it (I didn't use a case on my Note either and never once did it slip out of my hands).
Of course, use your own judgement, but a phone this beautiful will not be covered up in any way by me
I agree with you. I never use any screen protectors too.

Android Authority is for me an undercover Apple fanboy site, Just like BGR :|
the amount of posts saying how amazing the iPhone 5 is, is getting annoying tbh
In the i**** 5 Vs S3 they kept making the S3 fall face down and the i**** fall on its side and the guy with the girly name, darcey or something? kept jumping from happiness from the AMAZING and TOUGH screen on the i**** 5 if you look up for any other video with both phones face first you will see both got absolutely destroyed in almost an identical way!
Just dont take any biased BS from them and go to other sites such as Android Police or Phandroid etc

Just do a bit of search...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1918008
Corning said this about their gorilla glass2.
" Gorilla Glass 2, a glass 20 percent thinner than the original material offering the same scratch resistance, the same strength..."
So its to help weight saving & help reduce phone dimensions, its wise NOT to interpret it as being a stronger or more scratch resistant screen when in a device.
use a freakin screen protector! there like 50 cents. obviously your worried about scratches. USE ONE. gorilla glass or not. why take the chance on a 700 dollar device. i wouldnt but thats just me. hell i bought screen protectors on my flip phone. lol. i just like my new phone to stay new

I hate screen protectors and never used them. I feel it like a condom. Much better and comfortable to touch a real glass than a stupid membrane. My galaxy note have only a few micro scratches after 8 months, but I almost cant see it. Only at sun and screen off I barely can see very tiny scratches.

I've gone nearly 2 years now on my Inspire 4G without a single scratch on the glass, and I don't baby my phone.
I don't use screen protectors, not because of the cost but because they ruin the feel of the phone.
Maybe I got a bad screen protector, but the film felt much more coarse than the gorilla glass with the S-Pen. I can't imagine using the S-Pen without that smooth glass. No screen protector for me.

with my experiences, i saw my wife's Samsung S1 don't have any scratch after 2 years :-O , so i decied don't use any screen protector on my S3 ( Gorilla Glass 2 , too)
But wtf ????????? , my s3 display have 2 scrach after 2 weeks ................. i don't put it with any metal or something like that, don't throw it from the air, i have no idea wtf happened to me
In my experience, GG1 (on the 0G Droid) was rock-solid by itself... and I've had no issues on my unprotected GNex (no GG). I still have yet to use a protector...

Note 4 Screen

It has been 7 months with this phone and when shine it under certain light,
I can see and use my hand to feel the minor scratches on the screen
Why is this happening?
Isnt this gorilla glass 4?
Gorilla Glass is nothing but a marketing hype. I didn't notice under sunlight but under an LED and was shocked too! At least a dozen micro bruises, which can't be felt, nor can be seen when display is on, so display experience is not affected in any way but just looking at the screen when display is off is not really a good experience, especially for someone like me who can't stand anything but a 100% perfect display.
So basically you can't do much other than not carrying your phone with keys, coins etc., and make sure nothing hard or sort of objects come in touch with the display, and just apply a protective screen, tempered glass will be a PITA for Note 4's display being a 2.5D one, so just get one of those plastic type ones, should do the job.

Yup the feeling seeing your phone screen having minor bruise is pain
Btw thanks for the tip

No tempered glass makes me a sad panda :(

Jesus these curved screen phones are pissing me off, I kid you not.
I'm a huge fan of tempered glass screen protectors , In fact it's a deal breaker for me.
I hate the feel of PET or TPU screen protectors with their magical self healing properties, they feel soft and sticky..not smooth.
I don't have particularly enormous hands so i want a small..ish 5.1" to 5.2" phone with a good Screen to body ratio.
I can't believe how hard it is now to find a FLAT SCREENED small..ish FLAG SHIP phone.
They are all huge 5.5" to 37" bloody screens.
I have an S6 EDGE and i love the phone, I love how fast it is, I love the Camera.
Don't get me wrong I'm not a Samsung Fanboy, I HATE hardware buttons , I HATE TOUCHJIZZ (Thank god for Xposed Framework, at least i can manage resolution) But most of all i HATE the freaking shape of the back of the phone (Hold it long enough without a case and it leaves a dent in your hand it's so sharp) and i HATE the shape of the curved screen.
Even with a terrible PET screen protector i find the keyboard is occasionally unresponsive.
I have a Z3 and a Z3+ (Z4) and they are just not in the same ballpark as the S6 speedwise and are considerably bigger in size.
I've used a Z5 and lets face it, Even the SnapDragon 810 falls behind the S6 EDGE.
However , If I'd known that there are no tempered glass screen protectors for the S6 Edge, I wouldn't have bought it.
I was super excited to learn about the huawei P9 , Small phone..Fantastic Screen to body Ratio , Big Battery, SD Card Slot, 4 Gig of Ram, Freaking Amazing camera's...And then they go and ruin it with a 2.5D curved screen that no tempered glass screen protector will fit on properly..They all have to be made smaller than the screen.
http://www.gsmarena.com/huawei_p9-7972.php
Then Samsung announce the S7 , fixing up all the issues with the S6, Bigger battery, SD Card Slot , 4 Gig of ram, Fantastic screen to body ratio ..and what do they do..Go and ruin it by putting a 2.5D curved screen on it so once again you can't have a tempered glass screen protector that covers the whole screen..they are made smaller , you can feel the edges , they interfere with typing.
Sooooooo, The S7 is a no go.
The LG G5 is just a little to big for my hands ..yet i love tap on.
I can't believe this , but I'm actually considering a standard 128 Gig S6 with a flat screen just so i can actually protect it and enjoy using it, and maybe add a Mophie
Juice pack or something similar thats thin and doesn't add much side bulk to the phone...at least i know tempered glass works with the Mophie since they sell one with it.
http://www.mophie.com/shop/juice-pack-galaxy-s6
I consider curved glass on phones like 3D movies , they are coming out all over the place, yet I don't know a single person that likes 3D movies or goes to see them.
I haven't actually ever used or held a standard S6 (In fact the only reason i got the edge was for the bigger battery *sigh*) but i presume they are totally flat and can have a normal glass screen protector put on them.
I don't know if this is the correct forum for this, but i don't think XDA has a RANTING and VENTING forum lol.
Well i don't know what you're talking about, there are dozen of tempered glass for the S7 edge that fully covers the screen perfectly. Check on Zagg website or on ebay. Although they are expensive. The annoying part though is that they have to color the top/bottom bezel for I don't know what stupid reason...they should make it just transparent
I don't get it either... Why the hell you bought an EDGE in the first place? You could have chosen a normal S6 that was same as an Edge but with a flat display.
You say you don't want huge (5.5") displays but you bought an S7 Edge that HAS a 5.5" CURVED display. Why haven't you bought a regular S7 instead (that has a flat 5.1" display) ?
Ok, I got it. First time you bought the S6 Edge you might have made a mistake, new phone, first one with a curved display, bla, bla...but doing the same thing second time and complaining about it...
Oh and a last thing. Read a little about "nanofixit" (or similar) screen protectors. It's liquid, increases the display hardeness up to 9H and fits any display (cause it's liquid). Glass screen protectors start to become obsolete

Ummmm , Do i need to point it out or should i just tell him to reread.
Fine for the slow ones.
1) I did not buy an S7 edge, no where in there do I state that I did... In fact I said the S7 was out with the simple phrase "sooooooooooo the S7 is a no go"
2) The reason I didn't buy the S7 is because you're actually incorrect.. They don't have a flat screen.. They have what is known as a 2.5D screen... Basically this is a useless tapered end of the screen.. It serves no function other than to look good... But what it does is stop tempered glass protectors from covering the complete screen since they've not (contrary to mnm372) developed the process to adhere the curved glass protector to the screen.. The coloured tops and bottoms he mentioned are to hide the glue.. They can only glue them on in the 4 corners... So far there has not been one good or favourable review of a curved tempered glass screen protector for the s6 or s7 edge.. They just don't make full contact with the screen.. I've tried 3 so far, all from different manufacturers, all applied by people that do this for a living (I'm not good at it).. All were a failure.
3) What I said was, I was considering an S6 flat version just so I can have a small but powerful flagship phone with a tempered glass screen protector.
You're referring to such products as Crystalusion, I do in fact have a packet in front of me right now.. But i can assure you it's not the same as a tempered glass protector.
Sure, it's touted to protect your screen against normal use, scratches, abrasive marks.. Even bacteria.. However on my nexus 4, it didn't stop the screen from cracking when it was dropped.
A tempered glass protector did exactly what it was supposed to do when my Z3 was knocked off a table.. It broke the tempered glass and protected the screen underneath 100%...that's its job.
My pet hate or pet peeve, people that can't or don't read... Next time read and comprehend.
Consider this your written spanking for not reading before replying.

How does the screen size feel from a traditional 5.5 inch 16:9 aspect ratio screen?

How does the screen size feel from a traditional 5.5 inch 16:9 aspect ratio screen?
Coming from a 5.5 inch screen, will it feel smaller?
Same height than old's 5.5 inch.
It is very compact in hand while the screen is bigger than traditional 16:9 5.5"
