ZenPad 10 Choked on an OTA Update. Unable to Flash Firmware. Halp! - Asus ZenPad 10 Questions & Answers

Hi all.
I goofed and didn’t completely unroot before applying an OTA update on my Zenpad 10 Z300C and I’ve got the classic “stuck on the boot screen” problem. I loaded up an elevated command prompt and applied the mod-recovery-z300c.img recovery image. Now when I try to apply the latest firmware update from Asus, I’m told that my file system is read only. I’ve google’d around and tried the usual fixes like
$ su
# mount -o remount,rw /system
but nothing seems to work with the internal storage or a SD card. Here are the errors I get.
Internal Storage Error
adb push "C:\adb\UL-P023-WW-4.7.5.0-user.zip" /data/media/0/ failed to copy 'C:\adb\UL-P023-WW-4.7.5.0-user.zip' to '/data/media/0//UL-P023-WW-4.7.5.0-user.zip': Read-only file system
SD Card Error
adb push "C:\adb\UL-P023-WW-4.7.5.0-user.zip" /sdcard/
failed to copy 'C:\adb\UL-P023-WW-4.7.5.0-user.zip' to '/sdcard//UL-P023-WW-4.7.5.0-user.zip': No space left on device
I’m following the instructions left by InvisiBot here and got stuck on step 3. I’ve gotten myself out of messes like this before on my phone, but I’m stumped this time. The SD card is completely blank. I've tried NTFS and exFAT file systems with no luck. Even when copying the firmware zip to the SD card from my PC, I'm unable to apply it with adb shell updatezip /sdcard/UL-P023-WW-4.7.5.0-user.zip
I sure would appreciate any help.
Thanks!
I've been banging away on this tablet for about ten hours now. Does anyone have any tips or ideas? I'm open to even the most far fetched ones at this point.

For anyone who has a similar issue in the future, I found the files I needed for flashing here. It resolved my issue.

Hero's Kryptonite?

I tried to flash the Hero rom by partitioning my stock micro sd (the 1 that came with the phone)
...yeah i know it says not recommended but my 16gb card is being mailed and i couldnt wait.
anyway...now it will show the boot image and play the sound and then it will just be a black screen and wont go any further.
would i able to salvage this when my 16 gig card comes somehow?
could i flash back to an older rom? is the app_s folder in the ext partition going to interfere with that at all?
Please help!!!

i would recommend to go back to your backup (you did do a backup right?)
just flash the data, system, and boot .img files back
since you're doing Hero im guessing you have the newer SPL
you might run into a roadblock trying to fastboot so if you cant get the fastboot to work then boot into recovery mode and then go into a command prompt and run the following:
adb shell
echo /dev/block/mmcblk0 > /sys/devices/platform/usb_mass_storage/lun0/file
Click to collapse
this will let you access your memory card
get the HardSPL from here
copy it into your card as "update.zip"
now apply the update with ALT+S
after its done you can reboot back into the bootloader with ALT+X and typing
reboot bootloader
Click to collapse
now you should be able to flash you backups like usual
nope didnt make a backup...i know..
but...
i was able to format my sdcard back to its original state and i flashed google ion back on the phone. question is are there any lingering affects to the phone itself? in setting up the ext2 or anything on the stock card might i have pushed or pulled something i shouldnt have from the internal storage if i didnt create a backup??
if so. how would i fix this?
if you Alt+W'd the phone there wont be any lingering effects,,,, its wiped and wont bother you no sunder!
I was having the same problem as you, as I too am only using the stock 1gb sdhc that came w/ the g1.
just did searching on here and I got it up n running.
I'm thinking maybe you did like me and pushed the /app_s/ folder while the SD was mounted to your pc, this is what I am guessing was my issue.
I've come to that conclusion since I've done the push w/o mounting the SD
Also I found that I had to be in the app_s folder on my computer to push it right, at first I was pushing it and it was going into /system/sd/app_s/app_s
Here's Haykuro's original instruction's
Installation:
1. Download http://www.droiddeveloper.com/hrbuilds/app_s.zip
2. extract "app_s" into your sdcard's ext2 partition.
3. Download http://www.droiddeveloper.com/hrbuilds/hero-signed.zip
4. Place on regular sd card.
5. Reboot into recovery, wipe and flash.
6. Enjoy.
--
for step 2... make sure you are in the actual app_s folder when you do the following command and make sure the sd card is NOT mounted.
adb push app_s /system/sd/app_s
--
follow the rest of the instruction's as stated and you should be fine.
now, to get it running smoother...
follow the tutorial here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=521251
also within the thread there's tip's on moving the Rosie.apk along w/ widget's to internal memory, I just focused on the larger widget's, the largest being the weather one.
hope this help's.
just one noob tryna help another noob out ;-)
please help

Cannot Get Phone To Start Anymore

So today i rooted my phone installed JF1.41, i partitioned my sd card IN MY G1, since i have a mac and for some reason it wont partition the card right. Then i did the apps2sd deal... Then i wanted to use a theme, well that screwed everything, and it wouldnt get back to normal or even start again. So completely formatted my card, which now has NO PARTITIONS(i guess just 1), and i think the phone is trying to read files on a partition that dont exist now, and NOTHING is working. Anyone on here that can help? I am rather smart with this stuff, but really am going to need someone to help me. I need my phone tomorrow.
Thanks.
How did you reformat your sdcard? Did you check in parted to see that you in fact only had 1 partition again? I suggest you flash a new updated ROM like Cyanogen 4.2.5. That has apps2sd script built into the rom. It will do it automatically so you don't have to mess with all that.
ok ill try it right now and see
I know FOR SURE i dont have a 2nd partition cuz i formatted it with only 1

you're going to need a second partition for apps2sd to work. I suggest you do that first before you flash a rom, or else you will just have to end up reflashing.
Ok Downloaded Cyanogen4.2.5
This is the problem i keep having when i try to apply the update it say
Installing from sdcard...
Finding update package...
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0)
(Invalid argument)
E:Can't mount SDCARD:update.zip
Installation aborted.
So i think it has to do with the fact it wants to read /dev/block...etc from the partition of the sdcard that is now non existent
problem is i have a mac and cant properly fromat the 2nd partition (ext2)
unless you know of a way
the way i first did it was using some code i got off of here to have the phone do it itself... now that i cant start the phone i cant do the partition
what recovery do you have? I suggest you put this one on your phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566669
It partitions your sd card for you.
Also for Cyanogen, you need to flash the htc OTA update one, then flash his update for those to work.
ok...
so i found some plugins for the new Snow Leopard OS for mac called MacFuse 2.0 along with its counterpart fuse-ext2 and i partitioned my card
you might want to upgrade to ext3. it's faster than ext2 and runs smoother
just tried to flash the recovery found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566669
with no avail and tried to start the phone(power+camera) and said no image
heres what it said for the recovery
/ # mount -a
mount: mounting /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 on /sdcard failed: Invalid argument
mount: mounting /system/modules/modules.cramfs on / system/modules failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /system/xbin.cramfs on /system/xbin failed: No such file or directory
I mean, what i want to know is how to build the file format back on my sd card so itll work, or build it so it will look on my actual phone... People put up the code to have it switch where it reads things from, there MUST be a way to switch it back manually as well
Use fastboot and write the recovery image
here's a link to fastboot
http://developer.htc.com/adp.html
then when thats running plug in your G1 and turn on holding Power and camera when the screen turns on you might have to press back to enable FB but once its enabled type in terminal
Code:
cd *where ever your recovery image is*
fastboot flash recovery *recoveryname*.img
reboot
can someone hook up a quick step by step on how to hook my phone up fastbooted? I have a mac and i can get the phone to say fastboot, but im lost after that... If you want to reroute me to a different thread, please verify that it REALLY has the info before posting it.
i have been trying to find the name of the device and im getting
/dev/tty.Bluetooth-Modem as the device name, but a Permission Denied thing... now i cant just go click something in the phone menus, since i cant get the phone to start, so is there a way to get permissions through the Terminal application?
that error you get when you type mount -a is normal continue as instructed:
flash_image recovery /(whatever your recovery image is called)
if you have adb you could try parted /dev/block/mmcblk0 and type print to see your parttitions.
so i can get it to say it flashes the recovery, but still not starting
so when i try to do any updates it says SDCARD wont mount
any input?
Looks like im going to go for a broken record, until SOMEONE can help me figure my phone out... I need to get it running, and i know someone can figure it out

Partitioning microSD card

After setting up my wife's A7 and using it for three weeks, I have decided to open mine up. I waited because I wanted to see if CES had anything I wanted more. I decided they didn't.
So, I am starting from scratch again.
The main issue I've had with my wife's A7 has been the lack of storage space for apps, especially the big games.
Bazbob seems to have a solution by partioning the microSD card and using Apps2sd.
I took a new Class 10 16GB microSD card.
I downloaded and burned Ubuntu onto a CD from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download
Put the card in my laptop, restarted it into Ubuntu.
Ran gparted.
Shrunk the Fat32 partition to just under 8GB and added another partion as ext2 primary.
When I restarted my laptop, my sd reader in the laptop doesn't work.
When I put it into the A7, it says the SD card has Total Space of 7.73GB.
At this point, I'm not sure what to do next.
Help is appreciated!

You needed to make a second partition EXT2 and format it. You then need to mount the partition. I did this by using the install-recovery.sh that it located in /system/etc. I used the following tutorial and it worked. I got over 12gb of space to install apps.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=832799
I did try to mount the new partition to /storage which is also /sdcard and i was still not able to use titanium backup to move apps. The only way i have alot of space is use this method.
I'm also mounting the fat32 partition to location /storage so that when i download apps thats where they are stored until you install them. Also Titanium backup dumps the backups here. This is done with a custom mod of Dexters 1.0c mod.
I did not use adb, i used a app called quicksshd which allows you secure ftp into the tablet and make changes. I suggest using a windows programs called winscp and putty.
Thanks for replying rfisher.
Turns out that my laptop lost the drive letter for the sd card. That's fixed now. When I insert the card into my laptop, it says that you need to format the card in the drive to use it. Any idea why?
I am confused by your instructions.
You said

I did that. First partition is FAT 32, and second partition is EXT2, primary.
Maybe I didn't format the partition? I just created it.
I'll install busybox and see how far I can get with it.
With the other A7, I was never able to work with ADB.
This device really makes me feel like an idiot.
Still can't believe I was the first to get Google Apps working on my wife's tablet!
no adb
Well, the hours of frustration have returned...
I can't get adb running on my laptop.
I installed Android SDK.
When I type adb in the cmd window on my laptop, I get
"adb" is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file"
I have tried moving the ADK folder to c:\
and
to:
C:\Users\Bucks HP
No luck.
I added the path c:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools
to the environment variables in my system properties.
My head is going to explode!
Well, I got adb working, I think...
Problem was in the cmd window. I had to change the path.
Now, I can't install busybox. I followed the instructions from the wiki.
When I type "adb push busybox /data/local"
it returns: cannot stat 'busybox' : no such file or directory.
I pasted the busybox file in the
C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools
folder.
Was that the right place for it?
Is the busybox file just a text file?
Also, mine is named busybox-armv6l
Should it be renamed? I tried "adb push busybox-armv6l /data/local"
and got the same result...
I gave up on installing busybox via the wiki instructions.
I installed Titanium Backup and installed busybox through it.
Now, when I type: cd /system
mkdir sd
I get :
mkdir failed for sd, read-only file system
What does that mean and how do I fix it?
Thanks
The saga continues...
With the busybox from Titanium Backup installed,
I needed to type:
adb shell
su
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk3p1 /system
exit
exit
Then, following the tutorial, I am up to step 12:
12) Now comes the tricky part: making Android mount your new partition at boot time. All the hard work would be useless if Android discarded the mount points every time we restarted our phones. To do this we’ll need to create 2 scripts and store then into /system/etc. Obviously the scripts should be started by init.rc and need to run as root. Fortunately Android’s init.rc have a gap that makes this possible. The scripts are named install-recovery.sh and init-sd2.sh.
My question is: How do you create scripts?
You would create them with notepad++ which is a windows program. Then using adb push them to the /system/etc directory.
I used a app called quicksshd and a windows program called winscp to copy the files to the directory. If you used my method you first need to make the /system directory rw before it will let you copy the files. It worked for me, the only thing i did differently is edit init.rc to mount the first partition of the sd card to /storage, but this was creating a modded 1.0c rom. So the result is about 4gb for my sd memory and 12gb for installing apps.

Hi rfisher
Thanks for replying!
While waiting, I opened Notepad++, copied the text in the tutorial window into it and saved the file as Unix.
Then, I copied it to a USB drive, put it in the A7, and copied to the system/etc folder.
Is that acceptable?
Then, I followed steps 13-15.
I think I did something wrong. I am not seeing it in Root Explorer. What should I be looking for?
Was I supposed to install Apps2SD already?
I got winscp and quicksshd working. YEAH!
Used them to copy the files as you did.
Restarted A7.
Still don't see the other partition.
PS. I was just rereading your earlier post and you mentioned:

Looking on my A7, I don't see a location that is /storage
My tablet is fresh out of the box, without any firmware updates yet.

Unable to write to ums lunfile (No such file or directory)

Hi every:
Recently and I don't know why my sdcard leave working as usual. I try to mount from recovery and get this message:

So I don't know how to solve it. I try to read the SD in another phone and it reads OK without problem so SD isn't the problem, also I did format from Windows as FAT32 but still having the same problem, any help on this? It's possible it's a SW problem or it's HW problem? I'm freaking out
I have the same problem.
any solution?
I got the same problem, but I noticed my s off was now on too, I have the files to turn it back on from UNREVOKED through CWM or even flash back to stock image but I'm concerned this may brick my device as I'm not the most experienced user, any tips, knowledge or warnings before I try would be appreciated.
I'm having the same issue trying to reload my recovery mostly trying to get into recovery to instally my gummy rom. I cannot access my sd card via cwm 3.0.0.8 on my droid charge gummy charged 2.1 rom. Please help!
Ok, finally and after a deep, long, tedious Google search I found a solution, at least for me works and for now my memory and my phone are OK. Here is the steps:
1. If you have any recovery rename it to recovery.img and copy to the folder where you have fastboot.
2. Extract your SD and run this command:
Code:
fastboot.exe -c board_sapphire.disable_sdcard=0 boot recovery.img
3. Insert SD again
4. Run this command from adb shell
Code:
#mount /sdcard
Run as many times you need in order to get SD mounted.
This works for me so good lock for every of you that have the same problem as me in the past

[Q] TF101 doesn't recognize internal sdcard

I have CWMR 5,8 installed. First boot automatically loads into CWMR [this is, as far as I've read, a problem with the recovery and I can handle it if I can fix the internal sd card]. Rebooting and cold-booting helps me boot up my ROM (I've tried multiple ROMs, currently on CM9).
Everything works, except for my internal sdcard (weirdly thought I cannot access my external micro SD from CWMR). It seems as if its not mounted. I got ADB access to the device, /sdcard is there and all of the files are there. I can adb push and adb pull, so the internal storage seems to be working fine, it just doesn't mount it. Maybe the issue is permissions? ls -la sdcard outputs: lrwxrwxrwx root root 2012-10-26 20:43 sdcard -> /storage/sdcard0
Any ideas? I've tried installing different versions of CWM recoveries (adb push zip file and then using CWM to actually install it), they don't seem to stick.
Does /storage/sdcard0 exist on your device (AFAIK this is the new location defined by JB, but I don't know what CM9 does)?
If not, you may find your files in /data/media.

ok first thing, your external microsd card should be /Removable/MicroSD/. also what do you mean when you say youre pushing zip files then installing them but they dont seem to stick? how are you connecting via adb are you using ./adb shell to connect and move files? theres a certain way you have to push files to the device when youre in recovery.
Fixed it
Hello,
Not being able to mount the internal sdcard
The problem was I installed CM10 then somehow rolled back to CM9. The sdcard location moved between those 2 versions and the CM9 version wasn't able to mount it anymore. After installing CM10 everything worked apart from the boot loop.
TF101 booted into recovery every time
I fixed that by flashing: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1213723
and running the command to actually load in the new recovery from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1530337
In summary
My tf101 works thanks to all the info available on xda
