Finally! It's ridiculous that it took this long anyway. Every other carrier has had it on both iOS and Android.

now the waiting game is on for the rest of the android phones finger cross for my s7 to jump on board

There is a thread in the AT&T Community Forums that lists updates about this. I'm not posting a link because I think you need to register on the forum to see it, but it should be easy enough to find for supposedly real time updates.

OTA updates. How?

If I'm ignorant, please forgive me. But let's just say that the rumored Android 2.1 update is ready next week ... or even the week after that. How is the update to be distributed?
On my G1, it believe it was distributed as an OTA update. Considering I bought my N1 from Google (without subsidy - so t-mobile thinks I have a G1, currently) and Google's N1 site is kind of bare, and that I never had an option to register my phone/phone number combination with anyone ... how would I even knkow when/where to get it if not for these forums?

A friend of mine bought a G1 unlocked and uses it as his main phone without notifying his network provider and still receives OTA updates.
Hopefully, we'll get a notify to download the ota update...
I wonder if we will get official updates to add the flash 10.1, Multi-touch enabling and so fourth directly from Google/HTC.
Or maybe its how HTC did with Hero, I remember when an update came out it would be posted on the htc site along with a link and instructions on how to install them.
Good god, I can only hope not. I can't even imagine the complaints from people trying to install their own updates. Google would be asking to shot themselves in the foot.
Have you read have the complaints on the Nexus forum. Half of them can't figure how to turn the phone on and the other half shouldn't even be using a 'smartphone.' Sorry, if I'm being patronizing but that is why the iPhone 'works.' A 5 year old kid and use that thing.
Not an applefan boy. I love my Nexus One. I'm just saying it wouldn't be ideal. Every phone as an ip address to the internet so I'm sure they would somehow send it that way?
Doesn't the phone do an update check? then the phone downloads it, as opposed to it being "sent" to the phones...

Yes. The OTA update is really your phone checking for a new release and then downloading it and installing it if it's available. There is no push.

Yes you are being patronizing....Nokia give their updates both over the air and via PC. The choice of download and install is up to the user. Even via pc is straight forward any 5 year old could do it,in fact any fool could do it.....even you!
yeah, I maybe a fool that can update my phone but I'm pretty sure my 5 year old neice is not likely able to and brick her little hello kitty phone and rant and rave on the nexus forum of why the phone isn't booting up.
Have you been to Best Buy and listen to the people paying their money at the Geek Squad at the help station? Sure, there might be plenty of peole who are tech savy but the joe six pack....yeah sure.

2.1 update NOT happening Friday May 7th!

http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/30479?tstart=0
I suppose you realize that the admins on the Sprint forums know just as much as the front line tech you get when you chat or call them right?
Either way, I don't care when (or if) it comes out. I'm perfectly happy with the customized ROMs we have now.

It's still slated for first half 2010 (according to the sprint forums), but the last post on twitter said early first half 2010, which would technically give them about 10 days.
They ARE still planning to push out 2.1 to the Hero and Moment.

I will be laughing my ass off if it did come out on Friday and that admin was wrong.
I'll be very indifferent whether the update comes out or not...
Second post in the topic totally refutes you:
They couldn't do that even if they knew.
The admins and staff on BAW can't announce something before the Sprint PR department officially announces it or OKs the announcement themselves.

Now that we have the 2.1 roms will it really be that big of a deal when it comes out other then for the people on unrooted stock.
who cares about the official update i have given up on phones that sprint are responsible to update lol, sprint sucks i am seriously considering going to verizon these days, verizon has always had the best phone selection, more smart phones than any other provider out there, just so freakin expensive is the only problem
I want that damn update just so I can have a ROM without the audio loss that keeps happening! I can't get away from it no matter where I go.
Sprint is the undisputed king of dropping the ball on updates, had the Hero not been rooted before my 30 days was up I would have gone to Tmo.

I kind of care because I would like to see an Official 2.1 ROM, this leak doesn't let me send emails from exchange just reply.
Your title is a little misleading...
like another member said before me, the admins did not say that. all they said was they don't know..
No one at the BAW forums has come forward and said "this update is not happening May 7."
This is very telling because in the past, they have directly refuted most of the rumored dates.

Im guessing you didnt scroll down and read post 9 when the ADMIN said
"I can officially (no, really) state that it is NOT going on Friday, May 7 2010.
When is it going? Sorry, no one has that information for publication.
I can confirm that we are continuing to test the 2.1 build for both Hero and Moment and we are committed to delivering the update in the first half of 2010."
IM definitely not sayin he is right or saying he is wrong.. Only showing that an admin actually did say this. Some people i guess cant read.
Will England (Wengla03) at BAW is usually well informed on these matters and was always forthcoming with info on Sprint's last red headed stepchild (Instinct) in the past. I trust his info over any other "leak", though I do hope he is wrong.

Its really funny over there on sprints forums.. Someone made an off topic "joke" post and everyone joined it and was just talking. One of the admins got her pantys in a bunch and actually deleted peoples post that were off topic. Yet there was no topic but joking. She locked the thread for it starting to get off topic. Even wengla the admin joined in and said something before it was locked. Its like all the admins over there are so desperate to get action and constantly delete and end threads.
And i remember going threw all the instinct updates.. They were at lease muchhh better at setting general times (within the week) of when an update would come out. If it got moved back they would come out and say, its been moved back, expect it on this date.
The hero update, Sprint has been just simply terrribblee at keeping the customers in the loop.

Use social media to stick it to sprint and samsung

Pissed off about the 2.2 delays? Yeah me too.
DK28 not stable enough for you? Yeah me too.
Have had it with neither firm taking responsibility or communicating the status of the project? Yeah me too.
Take action:
Comment on: https://www.facebook.com/sprint and tell their social marketing team that you want an answer, an eta, a statement of responsibility. Hit them up at http://twitter.com/sprint too.
Or even: http://investors.sprint.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=127149&p=irol-contact
Do the same for https://www.facebook.com/SamsungMobile
Both firms are more likely to see your voice and respond to it then they would trolling the xda forums.
Do the same for https://twitter.com/samsungmobileus
Or even: https://contactus.samsung.com/customer/contactus/formmail/mail/MailQuestionGeneral.jsp?SITE_ID=76&PROD_ID=2088
I like this idea. I'll be bugging them as soon as I get home from work.

Hey guys, this is my first post and I'm a long time reader, so bear with me . Anyways, I toyally agree with you except, I just got off of the phone with samsung and according to the lady 2.2.1 was already released to sprint on the 17th of december. So if she is correct, it would be way more effective to call sprint instead because they are the ones with the ball in their court now (IMO). Yeah, samsung took long, but I think we must now pressure the carriers bcause it WAS already released to them (idk about AT&T) and that's maybe why the galaxy s phones were listed as 2.2 on Sammy's website. The sounded like she thought we had it by now, but maybe she's just... DUMB? Again I may be totally wrong about all of this sooo.... that's just my current thoughts on the update drama.
*edit: but hey, I guess it wouldn't hurt to talk to samsung while you're at it xD

The strategy here is not to directly go to one or the other but to both in hopes that one will pressure the other to make a statement or take direct responsibility.
Although I am glad that this is the case and we now have an official statement from Samsung.

Added to my harrass list. Will note however that I doubt this will bring about anything. They could care less how we the minority of users savvy enough to know the difference feel. They've sold near 10 million SGS phones.
Personally I think they should have froyo out a long time ago, HOWEVER if it's unstable, why release it? DK28 is close to stable but not for prime time. I'm running it and need to restart the phone about once or twice a day.
I suspect it was a management decision to not release it because if there are big issues and they release it around xmas time, who is going to be around to fix it or support all the end users complaining? Most of the people take vacations around mid December until January for holidays... Most likely they have short staff.
I think we'll see something in January when they have developers ironing out the last bugs and have a full support team. Maybe for CES??
On another note, I think they "leaked" 2.2.1 out for a reason.. let's beta test on the hard core folks... Lots of people complained about GPS and some other issues, so best to fix it first from their perspective. These leaks happen to go to typically more advanced users that can figure out how to revert back to stock without needing to call support...
Is there a such app that would do the same as an app called sms bomber but it would do emails or tweets lol then you could blow them up literally.....sprint
Viper Rom
Done and Done!
Gladly... thanks for the links!
Was reading around the pages and you guys are doing it wrong...
If your posting on a Sprint page, blame sprint, no matter what others say blame sprint and give evidence that its sprint..(if people blame samsung prove that is sprints fault)
(for those wondering international sgs did get froyo updates..it is official..not a rumor...the ones in canada were taken down but they were reinstated a week later and everything works)
If your on Samsung's page blame samsung and if people blame carriers prove that its samsungs fault...
This may sound contradicting but if your posting about how samsung sucks on a Sprint site..sprint does not need to defend samsung..they can let them take the blame..
same way the other way..
*evil grin* lol
I'm not sure of the timing but this was posted to phandroid after we started:

It would be nice for a carrier or manufacturer to give an official response instead of pushing the responsibility off to the retailers or customer service reps at the bottom.
Keep it going. Maybe we'll see something next week when the big whigs come back from their holiday vacation.

People here are just so touchy o:
It states that the first three devices are the Captivate and those others, and says that "select" devices will receive the update. I see no good reason why the Atrix would not be a "select" device, being that it's still one of AT&T's major Android phones. Just be patient.

Not touchy. The OP is saying after reading this article that the Atrix is one of the phones. It is not mentioned anywhere in the article. Nobody is being touchy. People just need to stop posting "assumed" crap and post facts. Other people need to stop assuming that the assumptions are correct and posting not one iota of supporting evidence.

I suggest rereading that immense topic and post totally a whopping 6 words. I don't see "Atrix" anywhere
He's simply sharing an article showing that AT&T is becoming more open, which may mean a future update for the Atrix, and, while a bit far fetched, potentially even hints at them allowing a bootloader unlock.

I was glad to see someone not let their anger at AT&T fly back at the OP so they update some of their older phones that are probably easier to do at this point. This is obviously a sign that they have realized they cant treat us like Apple does. If we really want open phones we can and will have them. So they are going to just give them too us open. It will probably cut down on warranty claims from stupid people doing shoddy jobs of rooting and flashing their phones. Im sure motorola wont leave us hanging theyve taken good care of me so far. so just be patient.

Um, you can't get stuck on FroYo for rooting. If you deodex/install a P-ROM, you'll have to flash back to stock, however.
I haven't seen anyone get completely bricked by modding the Atrix. There's almost no risk if you understand what you're doing currently. It's not like the Captivate where you might get the black screen of death and have to make a jig.
Considering the extensive testing that AT&T requires before allowing firmware updates to be released, along with the fact that 4.1.83 was literally just released, its not surprising to see the Atrix not on the list.
I also agree with the bootloader thing, if AT&T was the reason it was locked, Motorola now has some incentive to unlock it. Not that they definitely would though, as other motorola devices on other carriers show.

Yep. It's really disappointing.
Why? Because f**k us, that's why!
Likely just an issue of them taking their sweet-assed time putting their bloatware applications into the firmware, and I'm sure they've been extra slow after the official 7.0 worldwide rollout started and was halted for a whole like 2-3 days after a couple of bugs surfaced.
I always get a new phone by the time Verizon gives me an update. I know someone that got nougat on his T-Mobile GS7 Edge and someone that got her GS7 update last night on Sprint.

I don't think it's related to Verizon bloat considering the turbo 2 is getting the update now. I'm really annoyed that one of the top selling, highest rated phones of the year is taking this long to update.

This! Get it together verizon, every other S7 is getting the update why aren't we? Kinda furstrating and makes me want to leave verizon or starting purchasing unlocked models so I can root them and get updates on a regular basis instead of waiting for Verizon to release an official.
