Wifi speed no higher than 25mb? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions & Answers

Hi, so I recently noticed that when I run a speed test on my new s7 on wifi it won't go any higher than 25mb. my wifi has an actual speed of 50mb, whenever I run a speed test on on another device (G3 or s5) it easily reaches 50mb. even when I check my wifi through the settings I can see that it says the singnal is very strong and the speed is 56mb, but that doesn't translate to an actual speed test. is anyone else having the same issue? and is there a simple solution? btw my bluetooth is off so that doesnt change anything

Well I do not have an actual answer but I do know it is not a hardware limitation, there is some sort of setting that is off either on your router or your device. I am connected to my home Wi-Fi hitting constant 65-70mb speed test.

speedtest.net
PC: 235.64Mbps Down, 23.65 Mbps up
S7 BT On: 103.79Mbps Down, 23.36Mbps up
S7 BT Off: 108.91Mbps Down, 23.78Mbps up

SpeedTest reports lower speed

I used 2 apps to compare. SpeedTest.net and Xtremelabs Speedtest. I have a 2Mb connection and it test correct on my laptop both wired and wireless but with those 2 apps, my DHD reports ~223Kbits. I run the test several times (around 20 times) and it always shows similar results. Only one run which I did after returning home showed 2Mb. Never saw the same again.
Anyone noticed the same? maybe it's the way those apps measure or is it my phone?
You tested what ? Your phone connected via WiFi to your home internet, or your phone GSM/EDGE/HSPA connection ?
The home internet can be explained by downloading something else through other computers on your network or by lower wifi speed negitiated between your phone and wifi router.
If you measured your mobile connection, it could be that you simply don't have HSPA inside your house and it drops to EDGE or UMTS -> sub-300kbit speeds.

thanks,
I already know what you mention.
I test wifi connection. It is supposed to check data transfer rate between my local wifi connection and the Internet. I do the same on my laptop at same location and get 2Mbits.
My mobile connection here is unstable=(sometimes GPRS sometimes 3G) so I won't bother to test from here. I am only concerned about wifi results.
Are you getting those correct?
In case of WiFi, there are many factors which can slow it down. But since you are using the WiFi on your laptop too, we can exclude factors like interference from other WiFi networks or any other factors which could make your connection to your router problematic.
This brings it down to the phone itself. Now the questions is - do you use any kind of WiFi security ? If yes, can you turn it off just for test (yes, i'm asking you to have a unsecured WiFi network for a while). This way you can exclude the possibility that it's the encryption which slows you down. If it will speed up, your problem lies in encryption, and that brings up the question if you have USB debugging enabled or not - you should have, as it fixes the 100% CPU usage bug. If your CPU is used up thanks to this bug, then of course all encryption is slower, which means your data transfer is slower.

Strange, you know what? I connected to USB in order to sync and verify USB debugging (it was on anyway) but after sync, I run the test and it shows above 2mbits but one time it showed 1,2Mbits. The same goes with xtremelabs speedtest.
Now, I can't tell if it's due to the usb connection. I restarted my phone earlier anyway and it still measured slow connection at the time that my laptop was measuring high.
I ran the test so many times that I am 99% sure that the only difference this time was the connection to usb for sync.
I can't exaplain this, I don't know if you can
Then, after a while I try again and it goes down again. I sync but still stays down so that's irrelevant.
I perform the same test on my laptop right after this one and from the same location and it's always high.
I don't know how to explain this

[Q] Wifi Streaming Lags

Guys
I have not been able to stream 5 secs of the transformer video or any youtube video without significant stutter and lag. I have plenty of speed with my home wifi as far as i know. I have 20+mbs with Comcast and never have issues with my wifi.
what could be wrong...is it my N7 or my router?
I'm so happy someone else has this issue. Well not happy but happy to know I'm not the only one. I have 30+ download on my home WiFi and it lags when I try to watch YouTube also. Its very annoying. It can't be my WiFi because I have tried several other devices and they work great. Hopefully an update will come and fix soon because I'm an avid youtuber. But yeah your not the only one man.

I was having a issue watching transformers as well, I also rented a movie using my credit and never finished it because of lag.

try do a speed test see what's the through put you get on your device. Also, in the wifi setting, see at what speed you are connecting to your wifi router.
Speed test is 27mbps and my WiFi settings speed is 54mbps. I don't see a problem?

yea, doesn't seem like any problem with your connection. Did you try streaming via other apps such as hulu or only lags in youtube?
Some thing you can try:
1. wipe youtube memory and try it again. You can even try uninstall it and download a fresh copy from the market. If still lags, try #2
2. install the flash apk and try streaming youtube via another browser such as Dolphin HD and see how it works out.
what would you suggest I use for a speed test?
using speed test.net app my speeds are
1659 kbps DL
and
4592 kbps UL
seems like i might have a router problem if that's all i'm getting on the DL
my hardwired LAN gets 24 Mbps

If that's the speed you are getting through a router then there is a problem, perhaps router related.
Go to wifi setting on N7, tap on your current wifi connection, it should tell you the speed you are connected. Ideally it should be 54mbps or higher depend on your setup, but based on your numbers it seems it's connected at much lower speed, below 15mbps I'd guess. My 3g dl speed is even higher than that.
use your phone or another wifi device to do a speed test again, if similar low number then check your router's wifi configuraiton or change a router.
Last night I was on Netflix watching Weeds and the only time there were any hiccups was at the beginning of the episode when Netflix was adjusting the quality to my internet connection. By the end of the theme song there was no noticeable stutters and I believe it had upgraded to HD 720p. So Netflix seems to not be a problem.

My Cell phone HTC One S is even worse on wifi....352 kbps DL speeds.
I have a pretty new router. this doesn't make sense to me.
I just noticed the cap-out link speed of 65Mbps too. The manual says that the N7 is 802.11b/g/n capabile, so I figured I should see at least 150Mbps (if not 300Mbps like my laptop).
Anyone else noticing this low cap-out? Is this a software issue of the N7 or a hardware issue that I should have my unit exchanged for?

Something is definitely wrong with your wifi router.

Normal G router will have max of 54mbps so looks like you have a N router since you are connected at 65Mbps. Some wireless N router can only output 150mbps and some will do 300mbps. Most of modern mobile device's wifi N adapter is only rated up to 150mbps however. 65mpbs is really on the low side for N network but still sufficient unless you wish to do a lot streaming withing your own network. Keep in mind that, if you have both G and N wireless device connected to your router at the same time, the link speed will be reduced depend on your router's configuration.

I have verified that I can connect to the router\access points in my place at speeds between 242-300Mbps no problem. I have no G devices connected. It appears that the N7 is capping out a 65Mbps.
My question was whether anyone else (other than Rugged96 and myself) is seeing this in their WiFi connection info?

I guess N7 will have a max of 65mbps just like most of the phones out today mainly due to the single antenna. To get higher N speed you need multiple antennas (MIMO)
I won't be able to deconstruct my router until later tonight. I am working from home and need to stay focused....

So it is a limitation of the physical hardware...That is good to know. I was worried that something was wrong with my tablet.
Thanks!
Man that is BS!!!! Your telling Me I can't watch an HD movie on YouTube because the tablet went let me??? Why do they even have the option to go HD then? My internet pushes out 35mbps. That should be more then enough to run HD.

No problems here. Watched transformers Friday night with no problem. Sunday my wife used the timewarner app to watch NASCAR. I have even used the watch ESPN with no problems tethering from HOX. Not saying its not your N7 but it sounds like a problem with your network. Unplug cable modem for a min or do a reset through the GUI. Maybe reset the router while at it.

Wifi Speed test slower on phone. HELP

So I juse got Comcast 50mbps. Did speed test on Laptop and showing 57mbps max, did speed test on phone, showing only 34mbps. I even changed the channel on the router to the strongest signal and changed my phone signal to static in the adv wifi connection settings. Why is my phone not getting 50mbps also? Help
Just a guess here: power save...
A laptop can send more power to it's internal antenna to get better reception while the phone has a limit i suppose.
Have you tried your test with the phone being very close to the router?
Which software are you using to measure the speed?

I checked the power save option and I stand right in front of the router. At first my phone showed about 25 mbps and when I switch to static it went up a little. I'm using speedtest.net. Same speed test as my laptop. I would figure if my router is pushing out 57 mbps I should beable to get close to 50mbps on my phone. I can't get above 40 at all.

WiFi Speed Dependent on CHarging Status

I have discovered that my US996 Unlocked and rooted device has typical down/up speeds of 90d/55u when the phone is not being charged. When the phone is connected to a charger the typical speeds are 400d/270u. This is very repeatable. The phone is 3 feet from the router. am using speed.net and the ping is 4 to 5 ms for both configurations. If I start the test with no charger and plug the charger in during the test the speed increases dramatically to the higher values. The verizon.net speed test for the router on my gigabit plan was fairly consistent at 948d and 931u. Is there a way to get the higher WiFi throughput while not connected to a charger?
Which router are you using btw ?
90 Mbs down seems like single stream N, on 2.4Ghz
400 Mbs down is single stream AC at 5Ghz
Can you check what your link speed says in the wifi props on the phone
the single sim V20 is dual stream so you'd expect a doubling of that speed, should be able to do 800Mbs on AC and 180 Mbs on N at 2.4ghz with a dual stream router which most are these days.
The dual sim V20 is unfortunately single stream so my max speeds are 90 & 400Mbs instead of being twice as much
I don't understand why you get a difference in speed in the first place. Should not matter plugged or not
I'm using the Vz provided G1100 gateway router. Link speed on the phone says 866 Mbps. I'm at a loss too - probably a phone hardware problem. BTW, I'm still on US99610d deodexed ROM with Xposed and other mods that I wouldn't THINK would cause the problem, but....

Bolded bit implies your connection is good. Dual AC which i was expecting.
It's possible LG ramp down speeds to conserve battery. Not an issue with general use only with downloading
Bolded bit? Sorry, but I don't know what bit you are talking about. I remember seeing nothing bolded in anything wifi (settings). My router lists my V20 connection as "802.11ac" and I see nothing indicating any problem. But the phone still has the problem. I'm wondering if there could be an antenna problem and the charger conection acts as an extra antenna? Obviously l'm groping in the dark now.

Speed up phone's WiFi? Speedtest shows slower than actual internet speed

Is the phone's MODEM speed limited to about 50mb/s?
My internet speed is 70mb/s as measured on my computer WiFi connected to my router. The max speed the phone is showing is 48-49mb/s while sitting right next to the computer.
Is there a (build.prop) mod that can speed up the phone's WiFi speed? The phone is rooted.
Your computer could be using a different wifi band than your phone. Computer's speed often differ from the phone. Also both the devices have different types of antenna and operating power levels. I don't think messing with the build.prop would do much.
Let me ask the question differently. Is anyone getting faster than 50mbps on this phone? I am not.
The phone is rooted running 2/1/19 update OEM ROM Potter. Router b/g/n broadcasting at 2.4gHz only. Internet download speed is 90-100mbps on the computer. Phone and computer speeds measured 2 feet away from the router using the same Comcast speedtest app..
