Systemless root with 6.0.1 - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
Anyone using systemless root with any versions of 6.0.1? I am still on 6.0.0 because I did not find a systemless root version except the original one posted on chainfire's site from late last year. I know the version of the systemless root matters as the kernel version matters for it to build the correct boot image.
I am not asking how to do it, just if anyone has successfully done this and which files (file names would be nice, so I can google 'em) did you use, to do it.
I have done a ton of searches all over the place and can not find one way or the other out there.
I don't want to hear a bunch of systemless vs non-systemless root stuff, please.
Thanks!

Hello old friend! I don't see many folks from the Atrix2 around anymore.

I am using SuperSU 2.72 systemless with the latest stock 6.01. You could also use the newer BETA-SuperSU-v2.74-2-20160519174328.zip, I suppose.

Wow! Hey there, been a long time. Good to see you over here. Yeah I haven't seen too many of the old Atrix2 crew around the site for a while. It was almost as if most fell off the face of the earth.
This is my 4th Nexus device, and I will not go to anything else at this point. I am still working on the Ubuntu phone from a dev standpoint, plus a few things here with Android.
Hope to see you around here more often.

Hey meekrawb thanks for the info. I went to chanfire's site an took a look and the only boot image for the 6P is the mb08k image, which is the 6.0.0 release, and not a boot image for the later releases including the newer 6.0.1. I am guessing that since it is the boot image that the actual release verision is arbitrary, but just want to be sure. I plan on trying it anyhow as I can just flash a proper image if it gets into a bootloop.

You don't need those special boot images anymore. When you flash the zip it automatically patches your boot.img.

How to root now that bootloader is unlocked

I was wondering if there is any specific person or group we could reach out to to help root the Nexus Player. The bootloader is easily unlocked so all we need is root to enabled quite a few features that the NP needs (access to usb drives/keys from all apps, etc).
Chainfire is, of course, the obvious first contact, but is there anyone else that has shown Lollipop kernel experience to date on any other Nexus platforms?
You need to wait for the insecure-boot.img to be uploaded by someone.
Insecure boot.img
Insecure boot.img for Nexus Player tested and works, compiled from aosp_fugu-eng.
adb shell returns a #.
I imagine it is only a matter of time until we'll see TWRP for the NP. TWRP for the Nexus 9 was just released today.

can someone try this with supersu? Chainfire released 2.23 version for the 5.0 devices. I'd try it myself but my NP didn't manage to leave the warehouse yet.
I asked ChainFire on the official cf-autroot thread about autoroot for the NP earlier this week. He said he will getting a NP soon and would look at providing an autoroot package for it.
I like the TRWP approach a little more and may move to that for my Nexus 9.

link doesn't work - btw, is this an update for someone running 22.21.28 to another build, or is is from another build TO 22.21.28? if so, what build?
Correct link
My guess is the original poster meant to post this link:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95897840722648255
Based on the size, it looks to me like the OTA or flash image (from recovery) from 4.4.4 to 5.0.2 official/pure stock.
Link fixed.
This updates 4.4.4 to Lollipop 5.0. This was captured from an XT1064 model.

Yes, I've gathered that much but what build was the device on that this was pulled from. Was is 21.11.17? that's important to note because the OTA files are specific to that build only. Otherwise if it IS 21.11.17 I have also uploaded the same OTA file - I suspect it is based on file size (412MB).

no worries! you just got me all excited at first - thought it might be the OTA I need to go to 22.21.25 to build 22.21.28 on my Consumer Cellular xt1064 (unlocked and reloaded with stock firmware). As always, thanks for taking the time to pull the file and upload it! I'd rather have it and not need it... and that sort of thing.

definitely going to - I should actually clarify that I am sim-unlocked, not bootloader. I've managed to get up to this point using all signed firmware and the right OTA file, but since I've severly burned my bridges over at moto's forum, there's no hope of me doing MFN.... so I'm going to be unlocking the bootloader shortly - I was kinda hoping an exploit-based root might come about, but no such luck! Definitely going to be checking out the CM12 builds, as well as using this phone as my first foray into tweaking , and eventually building roms. It was a little intimidating at first, but now I'm wondering what the heck I've been afraid of all these years.

What is a systemless root?

As the title states, what is a system less root ? This is my first nexus so I'm getting used to the mods, ROMs and bits n bobs.
Cheers in advance.

Previous chainfire supersu writes in the /system partion, specifically in /system/su directory. This makes some of the security conscience application to reject phones that has /system modified. The newer version of chainfire supersu relocate the files to /su directory, and can pass the security check provided the /su/xbin_bind symbolic link is removed.

Would that mean that previously failed apps which require a non rooted system to work? That's amazing if that's the case.

Yes. As long as you are on stock, android pay will work with systemless root. You just can't use xposed.

I mean like my work email, (good for enterprise) barclays, Lloyds. Great about android pay.
Is there a workaround for getting Xposed to work or something similar that offers some tweaks?
A tip for someone new to ROMS and flashing. If you use Google Authenticator, or any other authenticator app, like Blizzard Authenticator, or Steam Mobile Guard, make sure you deactivate it before you flash anything.

Bootloader, recovery, SU, for some reason i get a flag on boot, apparently i didn't decrypt my data partition? Do i need to do that?

Marshmallow 6.0.1 security update released, April 2016 (MMB29X)

Available at:
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#shamu
At a minimum it should fix the CVE-2015-1805 vulnerability. If you see any other changes post here.

Hey all. Ive been off the scene since July. I finally got my replacement N6. As soon as I turned it on, It had this update rarin to go so I installed it. Is this going to have any effect on unlock, root, custom recovery? I ask because it is brand new stock untouched other than the update.
Thanks Fellas

So, I was on the 6.0 Build for a long time but finally decided it was time to update. I moved up to this build and have had some issues. Before I just replaced the Hosts file to get ad blocking. But with the 6.0.1 builds the System is full. Easy workaround was creating a symlink to a hosts file that is placed in /sdcard/ But in this build it seems like it isn't doing any ad blocking. Anyone have any ideas why?
Thanks
Basically I have 3 wants aside from stock, I don't root so I can keep Android Pay, I want ad-blocking, and edit the Build.prop to net.tethering.noprovision=true

No, its a Nexus. But look into the new SuperUser by Chainfire, it is systemless now. So version 2.67 or higher. Also the system partition is full now. You cant write to it without deleting a couple of items first like unused keyboards.
I have seen so many new versions of Viper, and as I said in my previous post I turned on my phone from brand new, fast boot, unlocked bootloader and rooted. I installed TWRP, version 3001. ROOT via CF-Auto-Root [SuperSU]

I generated Chainfire`s CF-Auto-Root, so you can try use it.
1. Download and unpack CFAR-taimen-default.zip.
2. Reboot your device into bootloader mode.
3. Install standart fastboot drivers.
4. Run "root.bat" file.
This batch file unlock your bootloader (if it`s not) and boot modified kernel.
Wait, when device automaticaly reboot. Then just install SuperSU apk.

I do not give any guarantees of it. If it causes bootloop - flash factory image.

And the magisk Dev just finally got the pixel one, so we maybe waiting awhile. I was thinking we might want to start a fund for either him or goodwin_c he's the one who built the unofficial versions of magisk most of this year for our og pixels. I have talked to him and he doesn't plan on getting one.
Firmware.mobi (Chainfire's site) has an option to automatically generate and download a CFAR package. Was the OP generated using this site? If not, someone should try that route.
Never mind. It was. Ignore me.

Apparently CCMT has been running SuperSU for the last couple years anyways: http://www.androidpolice.com/2017/10/03/chainfire-announces-end-involvement-supersu/
So it's possible that the CCMT team will update SuperSU for Pixel 2 devices.

They bought it a couple years ago, but Chainfire's still been actively developing with them, until the beginning of October when he finally "quit". He's still going to consult until the end of February though, so there might still be hope that he will be able to assist and speed things up for us! XDA Article About It Here
Boot to TWRP just fails in Fastboot. It just reboots the phone to bootloader. ?
Can confirm that this does NOT work. Will wipe your phone without giving you root. I have my bootloader unlocked as well. Seems we'll have to wait for a better solution.
Maybe it's just me but I feel like the title of this should be changed because it could be a bit misleading for many people. There is also already a topic for WIP Magisk so we shouldn't split topics on trying to get root into several areas.

lol. there are lots of posts from people who have no clue what they're doing, posting guides like they know what they're doing. and just as many who don't have the device, saying 'try this!'
i dunno if any REAL devs even got this device or have any interest, seems like no.
but seriously, like we didn't try cf-auto-root yet? lol. lol...
Magisk and CF Auto Root are 2 different things but I do agree this one should be removed or even say WIP.
