MM update. Default apps issue. - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys
Just installed the MM update for my Note 4. Didn't notice any difference at first, then discovered that Allcast no longer streams to my Xbox DLNA, and also now in the gallery whenever you click on a video it gives you the choice of apps to open it with ONCE then automatically sets that as the default, so if I want to open a video in a different player I now have to go into app manager and clear the defaults. Then I can open with the app I want. But that gets set as default too so it never ends.
This is really REALLY annoying.
Please does anyone know of a fix around this?
Many thanks.

Indeed a very annoying update all around!
No fix, but an app called 'Better open with'.

+1 for this, been using it for years: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aboutmycode.betteropenwith
Basically you set it as the default app for opening a particular file type or link, and then within this app you can choose which other apps are allowed to open said files or links. You can also have a countdown to open with a default choice, giving you a few seconds to choose an alternative.

Been meaning to ask this since I upgraded to MM, always thought that this was a stupid MM feature, but now I see this is a bug right?
Thanks to that app anyway, don't like unnecessary apps, but still better than annoyance caused by waste of time.

It's not a bug, it's a further stupidity from Samsung. You can find this so called feature nobody wants on other devices as well (Note 5 and S7).

Thanks guys. Will try that app out.
This is without doubt the worst software update yet, so much to complain about!

update app without user interaction

Hi all
I would like to know if it's possible to update a third party application without user action.
I noted that the android market can self-update the installed apps. The user is not asked about an acknowledgment.
I don't want to offer my self-coded app in the market. I found a way to update this app from my homepage, but the user must this affirm.
you could make a service that runs when the phone boots up that checks whether a new version exists, and if it does it downloads it.

thanks for your help.
That's not the problem. The download and the install works fine. All I want is to get rid of the dialog asking the user whether he want to update or not.
sorry ignore, misread the question

oh I get you. I know it must be possible because like you said the market can do it, but I don't know how, sorry.
ill do some digging and see what I can find.

New Android Market

Title says it all.
I wonder if someone has the apk already.
http://m.gizmodo.com/5820593/the-ne...s-phone-app-which-means-it-looks-a-lot-better
Wondering the same thing, I posted a thread in the themes and apps section asking this also.
Here ya go. Copy to system/app.
You beat me to it I just saw this on another thread!
Fir those that has downloaded it how is it, and can we vibrant users play the movies?

Haven't tried movies yet but the UI seems nice and functional.

ty very much for that
Strange thing happened, the market downgraded itself. I guess its not the time to update yet.

A downgrade indeed... in terms of features. You can't view the permissions of the app before downloading now, updates don't seem to show up on top. There is a possibility that I might have missed those features since I'm new to this.
On the plus side, it's super fast now and there are more useful categories. I hope they bring back the old features if they've been removed.

I'll need to check that out. Thanks!
But how about the updates? I know there's an app that has an update because I didn't grab it yet. Lo and behold, the app does have an update button in the app details BUT it doesn't show up on top of the list. Maybe I'll try doing stuff like rebooting my phone.
Oh, and one more thing. There's no longer the auto-update check mark like before. Is it really missing or am I just missing it?

My two updates are at the very top and seperated. And of course you can see permissions. Click download and a seperate page comes up to confirm and shows permissions and more clearly I might add.
Also its only showing the updates of apps actually downloaded from the market. I too had two that weren't showing but they did in fact have updates. The reason is those two were backups from like November and I don't remember if I got them from the market or here.

All my applications that needs to be updated are on top also there's still an option for automatic updates.
This is really a good update. I just need a wifi at my house so I can now rent movies.

So it turns out that all of the features that appeared missing (uninstall, auto-update, permissions section) were mostly caused by my apps losing their market links.. and being too quick to judge for the permissions one. After rebooting, the list of all my installed apps disappeared where they were in the "not installed" section before. So I think I'll have to find a way to restore them. It's either with market doctor in Titanium and/or clearing the market data, right?
I hear rooted users can not rent movies though the new market. Is this true?

Yes. This is true.

(The author of that complaint is Supercurio, creator of Voodoo Lagfix)
Yup, rooted phones can't watch movies. I don't see them removing that policy because of piracy issues.
But it really sucks to be this way, maybe they should do what amazon is doing? Making sure that the movies will only work on the account that downloaded it?

Thanks EB for the link. working perfectly on SimplyHoney 3.9.1.
tried the market apk on the latest cm7 nightly, but when i try to open it i get the message "you must add an account to the device to continue. Do you want to add one now?" so i choose yes but nothing happens i logged in to google thru the browser but no luck there either any suggestions??
After spending about 15 min with this, I have to say that this market is a nice improvement. The issues I encountered were all temporary (missing update button, security permissions lists before download, etc). Sucks that they decided to stop rooted users from video rentals. I can see why, but in the end someone will figure out how to bypass that.
If anyone has issues listing their installed apps in My Apps my solution was to use titanium backup to wipe the data of the market app clean + using the market doctor. I also had two accounts in accounts and sync and had to get rid of the secondary one to get to load up my default sync data.

You have to accounts and sync in the settings and add an account. Quite weird that you can't do it through the actual market. I never had an issue doing that in youtube!

Battery update

Hi!
Does anybody know what this battery update is. I got it as an update and to unlock the full features, I had to pay 3€per month!
I immediately unistalled this.
Is it spam? Virus!

What are you referring to? No link.
It sounds suspicious though.
It came like a system update and then it installed a battery app that monitored my battery behavior and wanted me to pay 3€ per month ;-)
This is the first time I see something like this on my android phones!?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
I've never heard of anything like that. It does sound very suspicious.
As you say, probably scareware/malware.
Now I have to look for an app to remove what ever is doing this ;-)
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
It is probably related to an app you have already installed. Go through any apps you aren't sure are from trusted sources/devs.
Thanks for the tip, I will check my apps. All my apps are from market place, its sad if we cannot trust the market?
Regards
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
The sad thing is mate you can't trust the market. You have to be careful what your installing!
Always check what permissions needs the app you are downloading depends of the type you dl it should need the right permissions. So lets say you dl a game and it needs permission for your contacts and call services then it is up to you to dl it I would never. And as long the developers have no other way to get cash they implant ofc in their apps some advertises so be carefully all the time.
And market is like Facebook a no money platform that helps people to find things, but it moment check what it provides, it is on the user to report bad apps. So many people abuse that.

Thanks a lot, I will try to be careful, and read before accepting anything this time.

Lol that's one of the scammiest things I've ever heard of.
If I were you I'd factory reset, and in future only install well reviewed and tested apps.

As a rule of thumb, I don't click on any links from any app, except the browser
I use a program that lets you assign permissions to any app. Anything that I install that I don't think needs to access contacts, location etc, I just block.
It has a side benefit of blocking the stupid ads in the apps also.
Try to use "LBE privacy guard" from the market its free!
NEED ROOT!
With this app u can control every app u installed give and take permissions!

I get this when I play certain games.
its just an in game advert made to look official which links to an app in the market.
It reads something like " You have two Battery updates available"
Download addon detektor then you can see whats causing the the push ad
And remove that battery thingy its probably the one that steals your contacts for spam

Unfortunately you have been hit by a 'Scareware' attack.
As Android is becoming more popular and unlike Apple which has tighter control the Android OS is much more open to attacks such as this.
You really have to be on your guard watching for these malicious attacks.
Read the comments from PCWorld and 2Viruses for a greater explanation.

Hardware Privacy App?

OK, it is now out of control. I need to access Yahoo mail but here is one of the latest permissions just released:
RECORD AUDIO (Microphone):
"Allows the app to record audio with the microphone. This permission allows the app to record audio at any time without your confirmation".
I suspect the reason for this is to enable voice search, but the above statement allows a whole lot more.
In the past week or so I have been seeing a lot of these ridiculous permissions. I guess the battle to monetize on your personal information is heating up drastically.
So, can anyone recommend an app that they are using with the stock ROM, rooted, that I can either selectively per installed app or permanently disable access to the hardware (microphone, camera, etc.). It would be nice if the app works with all other non-hardware related permissions as well. I see there are apps for custom ROMS (Xposed, PDdroid), but I really don't want to install everything on my phone from scratch again, and the stock rooted ROM does everything that I need.
Xposed with app ops. Works great. xposed works fine on stock rom

I was wondering about that. I actually tried this out on a few, and the apps kept on working. The only problem I see with all of this is that most apps update automatically and the authors are constantly sneeking in new permissions. This is going to become a maintenance nightmare. Can I at least prevent apps from automatically updating so I can check them out one at a time before I update, which would help out a little?
You can disable automatic updates in the play store settings. You'll just get a notification of new updates available so you can check them first.

Great, I never even knew there were settings in there.
Today I switched from AppOppsXposed to Xprivacy. Because in AppOppsXposed the apps were spread all over the place under different heading categories, and repeated under different headings in some cases, it was a bit of a pain trying to locate all the apps. Xprivacy is better set up in that regard, has much finer controls, several global settings options, and in most cases instead of blocking data it sends fake data, thus reducing the chance of an app not working or crashing. It was incredible the massive amount of things I was able to block, with no affect on any of the running apps.

Anyone got a list of system apps we can safely disable?

For what it's worth: After I disabled these I booted to Recovery and wiped the cache partition.

It was either AudioConnectionService or SapaMonitor.
You can tell if you go:
Settings>Sounds>Sound Quality and Effects>Adapt Sound.
If adapt sound opens up then you are good. If adapt sound doesn't open after you tap on it, then you would need to re-enable one of the above. Sorry I don't remember exactly which one it was. But, its one of those. I actually have them both enabled with no change in performace or battery life btw.
Let me know if you need more help.
