Tv box rom for i9505 - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, im wondering if anyone can point me in a direction of what I would like to do.
I have a Galaxy S4 GT-i9505 with broken touch which is currently set up with custom rom and root and various apks, pkugged in to my tv in the bedroom via mhl. This works extremely well as is a quad core phone I get much better performance than I do with the Amazon fire stick.
Now the apps ive used along with the custom rom basically put the screen to sleep and allow me to watch Netflix/Kodi very well, without any battery drain.
Im using various apps to control this and alter screen orientation when needed, using a fire tv Bluetooth controller.
Now this set up doesnt come without problems, which ill not go into in length but point out the main issues id either like to be fixed or gone with a different rom.
First, is there any android tv box/stick rom that is compatable with i9505? Even like a fire tv port or similar?
If not is there any way I can get the TV type apps to recognise fully the Bluetooth fire tv remote im using?
Is there anyway to make the apps im using run as if they were on an android tv box/stick?
I realise this is quite a strange setup/request but id like to know if anyone has any ideas on the topic.
1 thing to know, the rom im using has power options to draw more ma while plugged into mhl (700ma), this stops the battery drain.
Thanks for any pointers/advice in advance.

Hdmi output does not work

Hi all, fortunately I have my motorola Atrix but I have a problem when playing videos by hdmi to TV, connect the phone and it started the implementation of video on TV but nothing comes out, it is as if not detected, know if I have to do something special on the phone to work this out??
Thanks and regards
Do you select the webtop or media setting once you plug it in? If so, and you aren't getting anything, then your unit might be defective.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App
hello I am Spanish and do not quite understand what I say, I connect my phone to the TV by HDMI and then open the rocketplayer by example and not play anything on TV.
I've seen people talking about playing with the entertaiment center hd but can not find how to start that application. I've seen that in managing applications is a size 0.0B, may be why?
Where I can get this application??
Thanks and regards.

When you plug in the HDMI cable, a pop-up should appear on the phone asking to start the HD Entertainment Center. That's the only way to get video-out onto the TV. If this isn't popping up and you haven't done anything to modify your phone software, then your device my have a problem.
ok thanks for the help, the only modification I've done is to make the root software, nothing else has that something to do?
I have only tested on a old TV, I'll try another to see if that is the problem, my TV is the first that came with hdmi at best can that be right?
Greetings
My Atrix had something wrong with it's HDMI, I had to return it and get a new one. When I plugged it in to a TV the phone would act properly (the pop-up menu would appear, and the controls would be present when the media center was selected) but I wouldn't see anything but snow on my TV. I also tried a HDMI computer monitor to the same effect. I lastly went to the ATT store and tried a dock, same problem.
Interesting to know that it was more than just mine.
Oh, mine was stock, not rooted yet.
-Tom
Hi all, ultimately the problem is not the phone, I tested a friend's TV and it works perfectly, when you connect me jump hd window center and all good, so I have a problem with my TV.
If someone happens just as well try it on another TV in case.
Thanks for the tips and greetings.

HDMI to monitor not working

Hey all, I just got an A500, rooted it, flashed bootloader, recovery, custom ROM, all is good. One issue, I did not see anything on point in the Q&A section on this. I have a standard HDMI cable hooked between my laptop and second monitor. I did get a micro HDMI adapter. I pulled the cable from the laptop and plugged it into the tablet. Black screen on the monitor, although the orientation on the tablet does switch. When I pull the cable out of the tablet I do get a "check signal cable" message across the monitor, so it does seem to be "connecting". I've searched every setting on the tablet, there doesn't seem to be anything else I need to do on it. Am I missing something? The monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 940BW, fwiw. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Which ROM are you using for your tablet? ICS or JB? I have a Sony Bravia and when using ICS ROM, everything worked fine. But for the JB, only video but no sounds on the TV, only sound from tablet. It's a known issue for JB ROM. Is this the first time that you use the HDMI from tablet to TV? If yes, I suggest you check the TV's manual for set up option for HDMI. For my Sony TV, I had to use the remote control to select the input option every time I connect the tablet to TV.

PJ Sports 10/27, yes, JB. Sorry, I did not make it clear that I am trying to plug it into my 2nd monitor, not a TV. So, effectively it's a direct path from the tablet to the monitor. Does that help to clarify?

Software Updates — Fire TV v51.1.6.0 & Fire TV Stick v54.1.2.0

New software updates for the Fire TV and Fire TV Stick have been rolling out since July 1st. I haven't fully analyzed them yet to uncover all the changes, but we do know that apps and games can now be marked as "Favorites" in order to bring them to the front of your app/game list. Full overview of everything that has changed to come. Let us know if you notice any changes yourself.
Fire TV version 51.1.6.0_user_516009820 - Download Link
Fire TV Stick version 54.1.2.0_user_120060220 - Download Link
Attention @rbox
Could you please check if its possible also to set sideloaded apps as favorite? THX in advance.
Still using Anroid 4.2.2 so the update is a major fail. Any updates for the Fire TV that do not run Android 4.4+ will all be failures. Sure they may fix bugs or simplify the default launcher, but til they upgrade to at least Android 4.4 aall updates wil be worthless. They can add all the featurs to the Fire TV that they want, but it will never be as good as it could be unless they ugrade to a newer version of Android. Compatibiity issues are nonsense this day in ag with Android and I am hving several comptibility issues with the Fire TV all because Amazon refuses to upgrade the Fire TV t at lest Android 4.4. A month ago when the news of fire OS 5.0 came out I predicted that the Fire TV would not be running it in ten months and I hve nine months left to prove everone wrong that said I was wrong. Wait and see, nine months from now the Fire tablets and the Fire Phone will be running FireOS 5.0, but the Fire TV will be running either 4.2.2, 4.3 or if a miracle happens it might be running Android 4.4. I love the Fire TV and I am not jumping ship, but the Fire TV can not do what it should be doing if Amazon is not going to upgrade it to Android 4.4 I do not care about root or mods, but I do care about compatibilty issues, and more and more things are becoming incompatible with Android 4.2.2 and 4.3. Come on amazon, step it up and give us what we should've already had six months ago.
Nice update! Really looking forward to the shopping feature. Wonder if this feature will go live on July 15th with "Prime day"?
Looking forward to a flashable version of this.

No, only those downloaded from their App Store can be set as favorite.
You go into either "Games" or "Apps" to pick which ones you want to favorite, which brings them to the front of the Recent list in "Home" or the other mentioned sections.
Another change is they've added in the storage bar in Applications > Manage Installed Apps, now sit at the bottom of the screen.

Seems a new Fire TV Stick may be on the way running Lollipop 5.1 - http://liliputing.com/2015/07/amazons-next-gen-fire-tv-stick-may-be-coming-soon.html
This one will likely be left in the dark forever run on 4.2.2
Well, here is something...
For the longest time, when I hooked my Fire TV Box via Optical Audio to my Pioneer Elite VSX-21 (circa 1999-2000), SPMC/Kodi set for pass through did give me Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS (and show icons for each speaker). However, with the box set for Dolby Digital over Optical when playing movies from Amazon Instant, Netflix and Plex my Pioneer would always display only Dolby ProLogic (no speaker icons, indicating 2ch audio).
It looks like the v51.1.6.0 fixed that.
Today, playing a movie via Amazon Instant, I noticed Dolby Digital led on the receiver along with icons for each speaker.. Same with Netflix.
Plex however gives me no audio when playing movies from my server, but did give me stereo audio when playing a TV show via CBS channel in Plex.

Seems like just wild guess, and what spoils it is that there would be zero reason to put and accelerometor in an Android stick, which tells me that its not a new fire TV stick. I am sure there will be a new Fire TV stick at some point, but the page you gave the link to is 100% not a new Fire TV stick. You shold never link people to pages with unconfirmed info.
First up, it features WiFi and Bluetooth, but no GPS, compass, accelerometer, light sensor, camera, or SIM card. You’d expect most phones, tablets or other Android devices to have at least a few of those things.

Not sure what your reading but it states clearly it does NOT have an accelerometer inside, only bluetooth & wifi are ticked, certainly fits the bill of being a Fire TV Stick of some kind going off the other specs (or lack of), guess we'll just have to wait and see...
This is the page the article is about - https://gfxbench.com/device.jsp?benchmark=gfx31&os=Android&api=gl&D=Amazon+AFTS&testgroup=info

The specs fit the billing for many devices. Who knows it could be a new type of device, or it could be a tablet. Til there is proof the articles are just people making wild guesses. Like I said, go back and look at all of Amazons tablets and yo will be amazed at the features some of them do not have that almost every tablet mae by other companies do. They even took the gamble of leaving cameras out the first Fire HD tablet. Amazon does strange things with their devices. They have left rear cameras of some of their tablets and said their study shows that people do not use rear cameras on their tablets then released the next tablet with a rear camera. they have left out HDMI ports saying people with tablets barely use them then for some reason released other tabets with HDMI ports. I would not rule out that the device is a tablet at all. Its very likely that it could be a budget tablet. Their newer tablets have been getting more expensive compared to their older ones so it could be a cheap tablet.

And what would these sonsors be good for on an mediaplayer device?
GPS? I know where my TV is.
Compass? My TV doesn't change its direction so often.
Accelerometer? I hope it never falls off the wall.
Light Sensor? For a divice without display?
Camera? Would be nice for skype but better use an external one.
SIM card?
So where is the point?
Hmmmm and off topic anyway .. Sorry for that.

Yes, proof that this is likely the next generation FireTV or Stick, and not another phone or tablet from Amazon.
i've been unable to 'adb connect' to my unrooted fire tv box since around the time it received the latest update. i've rebooted several times - computer and fire tv. no luck. can anyone else confirm or deny this with their box? maybe something funky going on with my routers...
Probably you need to re-enable the ADB debugging within the FireTV System > Developer Options.

thanks, but i already checked that. i even tried turning it off, restarting, turning it on, restarting again. still can't adb connect to my box.
Probably the IP changed. Had this one time that my router assigned another IP than the regulary IP to the AFTV.
again, thanks for trying. firetv has a static IP. it has not changed. my router shows that the firetv is connected with the IP it is supposed to have. everything on my firetv works. i can't ping the firetv from my computer but maybe that is normal. i never tried before when adb connect was working. i tried doing a port scan from computer using nmap but it doesn't see the firetv at all. i feel like i'm losing my mind.
---------- Post added at 11:45 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:37 AM ----------
well, i've got adb connect working again. i told firetv to forget the network then i re-added it. this time i didn't specify IP/subnet/etc. i let it get it all from DHCP. now adb connect works. weird.

Mirror/cast content from Nvidia Shield TV to Nexus 6p

Hi. This is one of those things that must be so simple, but a Google search just comes up with pages and pages of totally unrelated nonsense. Hoping you guys can help me.
All I want to do is be able to mirror my Nvidia Shield TV to my smartphone screen. Not the phone to the NVidia Shield. Like a PS Remote Play but for the NvS TV. My room is within remote and gamepad range so an on screen pad is not necessary. Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks
(P.S if anyone knows of any Kodi addons with 4k content...that would be awesome! - there were 2 but they have been discontinued)
Any luck or good leads?
"Allcast reciever"?
What app or apps are you suppose trying to get to your phone?
I've been looking into doing the same thing but to a note 4. I think I found a few ways that seems like they would work for media streaming if your Shield had root access or unrestricted app installation options. Things like allcast reciever and other casting options. They all seemed to have too much latency for gaming if that is what you were wanting to do.
I'm not sure if a chromecast can output audio and video using the HDMI port but that might work if it can do that?
The other issue with pulling this off os that I think the solution needs to be some sort of universal screen and audio mirroring, like googlecast, that doesn't care about what app it is mirroring. Otherwise you'll have to rely on the app that is on the shield being capable of casting, and the Nvidia Hub isn't as far as I know.
I search for terms like: Android to android screen mirroring, android remote display, android remote access, etc....nothing so far.
My most promising hope for doing something like this now are:
1. Making my phone somehow act as or emulate a display, TV, Monitor in a way that can utilize the output from the HDMI port of a SHIELD device. This would bypass all the various issues and complications with specific application capabilities and restrictions, though it is just a idea about how to work around the app issues, I have no idea if this would even be possible. I also don't know if anything that is coming out the HDMI port has any sort of HDCP protection. I would assume that some things would but I would also assume that most of those specific things are the kinds of things. I would just be casting via media players anyway.
2. I have a really REALLY fast LAN network, and I know I am able to remotely access my PC in various ways that are low latency and high performance as far as display and audio are concerned. So, assuming the latency could be kept low enough I have thought about working on getting what I want to access on an Nvidia shield device to my PC running Windows 10, then I can just access that from my phone.
I don't know if you're familiar with that saying about engineering which basically says: "It's not a question of what you want to do but how much you can pay to do it." I say that because there seem to be a couple of fairly good high end Headset based displays out there. One is called the "gylph" or something like that and I have looked fairly thoroughly into one or two others that seemed to be high quality and have reliable reviews and testing available to find online. Some didn't seem available for another year or two, and even then you are going to be dropping $500 to $1,000 for them.
3. Using something like Tridef 3d and a head mounted VR headset based display. I was able to get that working pretty well without too much effort from my PC. The Tri-def software creates a side by side view of the application that you tell it to from your PC. So I can basically get a display output from just about anything on my PC and use it with just about anything they can recieve display output from my PC or remotely view my computers display with low latency. I haven't looked too much to see if something similar to this software is available that can run on a shield device. I would assume they are powerful enough even if you had to scale things down just a little bit.
The kind of set up that could send from your SHIELD, to your PC, to your Head Mounted Display or VR headset could be have some interesting advantages if the overall network latency was low enough. Having the rendering of the initial source on one device and the side by side display conversion on another could have a lot advantages. I own a Samsung gear VR innovator edition headset that I can use with my note 4, but if I want to use it for more than 20 minutes I need to pre-cool my phone in the freezer and to get any significant amount of time I think I would need to develop fairly high performance cooling system. That obviously isn't very easy to do when you need it to interface with a phone you use daily and also be small and light enough to attach to something you're wearing on your face. The point is that doing anything more than receiving and audio and video stream on your phone is going to be very resource intensive for it to handle. Even maxing out the gigabit Wi-Fi on my land for my phone makes it really warm and consumes the battery at a very high rate.
Whatever you do if it is helpful I have connected a pluggable USB 2.0 to Gigabit LAN adapter to the shield portable and it more than doubled the network performance. I'm not sure what the actual LAN performance is on the SHIELD
TV but even if you didn't need to increase it you might be able to reduce latency by by separating the total network load between the internal Gigabit Ethernet port and a separate USB 2.0 or 3.0 lan adapter. I don't know enough about androids capabilities to use more than one network adapter simultaneously four separate purposes to know if that is possible.
Well, congratulations if you've made it this far into my post. I have obviously been exploring this kind of thing for a while but there is a lot potential out there and a lot things that I don't know about or understand thoroughly enough. It's nice to know I'm not completely alone in this specific ambition. Hopefully we can gather a few more people and make some progress with this thread!
...wow
Wow that is an indepth reply. Thanks!
I can tell you've put a lot of thought into this. You obviously have a better chance of pulling it off than I do! (I did read it all lol)
I'm basically wanting to be able to mirror the screen like the PS4 remote play. Not just specific apps.
The only reason I know it's possible is that the Playstation 4 handles it remarkably well. No noticable lag as long as you have a good wifi router. Those guys at Sony must be using some kind of black magic. Unfortunately, I'm not gonna be the one who figures this out. I'm in no way a software or network engineer....I am an electrical engineering student though.
Anyway it's also good for me to hear that I'm not alone here. I wouldn't be surprised if Nvidia were working on this right now or at some point in the near future. And I sold the 6P and bought a Note 5 by the way. Wasn't a fan of the 6P at all.
Anyone get this to work or find another solution?
Thanks

Galaxy S4 Modifications (GT I9505) UK model

Hello guys and girls, im wondering if there is anyone in the know of what i want to try and attempt. Firstly, i have an old Galaxy S4 i9505, it was my old contract mobile which was put in a draw and forgot about as the LCD smashed and i upgraded anyway. I recently went out and purchased an Amazon firestick for the sole use of KODI, and it works fine (i would like to auto boot straight to KODI or even do away with the amazon operating system all together but ill save that for a future post). My questions are..
1. I have currently got the S4 with the smashed screen rooted, on a custom Rom, (OMEGA v21.1) usb debugging enabled and with a nifty program called Vysor i can connect it to my laptop and browse through the phone and add/remove install what i like. I obviously need usb debugging enabled to see the phone through my laptop but cant see how i could install another rom without seeing the custom recovery on my pc (as it only lets me see and use the phone when its fully booted up) Id like to use this phone purely as a media device linked to my TV with an MHL v2.0 adapter (which i have and works fine with an exception).
So first question, is there anyway of installing a Tablet type rom onto this phone without seeing the recovery menu (doing it blind is out of the question as the touch is also broke) but the rom i install (preferably with gaaps with it) as i need no function of a mobile whatsoever, only wifi and bluetooth i guess, but id need it to have usb debugging automatically enabled or enabled in the rom i flash as id have no way to access the phone because of the screen. any help on this would be a great help.
Now onto my second question..
2. While MHL works fine and i can use KODI ok from my S4, there is a massive problem i need to overcome, the battery drains faster than the charge gives, my understanding is that while the S4 is connected to an MHL lead it will only draw 500ma of power as its recognised as an USB device. So my thoughts are: as a fully charged LI ION battery on the S4 is around 4.3 volts with amp drawing what the phone needs (actual phone rated at 3.8v so at a guess a supply of 3.3v-4.3v is perfectly fine, im wondering if a voltage drop device (from 5v to 3.8) soldered straight onto the battery pins on the phone would keep the phone going without any type of drain, as in it would power the phone inevetably while runnin kodi or whatever else i decide to run on it, ive scoured the net for info on my project but cant seem to get any info about it. i really appreciate any help whatsoever as im quite stuck at the moment. Thanks.

1. I still don't understand why you want to flash a different rom. What will be the difference? There is to much risk imo. You will need a rom with usb debugging enabled by default and rsa security set off. Why not just find a different launcher that will suite your needs? But if you still want then make sure you have TWRP on your phone and use something to control TWRP from the playstore.
2. You need to find a kernel that supports usb fast charge. That will boost your charging to around 1000ma.
help
First thanks for the reply Lennyz1988, the only reason I wanted another rom flashed was is im in no way going to be using it as a phone, so would rather have a rom that is very light and very light on battery (as in background proceses). As for a custom kernel would that have to be also flashed through recovery ? As I've not flashed custom kernels im not sure on how to go about it, will any custom kernel work ? Sorry for the questions but is there any chance you can point.me in the direction of 1 I'd need ? Thanks.
