Moto X Style updates without cell carrier? - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm thinking about getting a Moto X Style just for use everywhere I have wifi coverage (I'd have no cellular service/carrier at all). Does anyone know if I will still get all of the security/OS updates or can they only come from a carrier?

Moto Maxx's own Forum Section

Help the Moto Maxx (XT1225) get it's own forum section!
The Moto Maxx is the international variant of the Droid Turbo but differently from other phones variations, the Moto Maxx has many things that set it apart from the Turbo.
Connectivity is one, for example. The Turbo is CDMA based, since it's from Verizon and the MAXX is an International all-rounder. Don't even make me talk about the name, it doesn't even
look remotely the same. THEY ARE DIFFERENT and they deserve to be treated like so.

If the moto maxx is an all rounder wouldn't that male the hardware exactly the same in the turbo? I take this as good news because I want to switch networks eventually.

Just the fact that one is a CDMA phone while the other is GSM is problematic. One is unlocked, the other is not. There will be different methods used in order to unlock the bootloader and root for each device. Some files will be ok to flash on one but death on the other and vice versa, read about the various bricks between the Find 7 and Find 7a if you want to learn how this happens. They do not have the same stock software payload and will require different roms which will get confused with one another and problems will happen because some people cant be bothered to follow simple instructions.
You can by the way make this request in the request thread up in general. I did.
The Moto Maxx XT1225 is just more dev-friendly than the Droid Turbo. It deserves its own section.

Wouldn't be easier to PM some forum moderator and ask for a different thread?.
There are many other phones that are carrier-exclusive that have their own section/forum.
Why not maxx/droid turbo?
I think new forum should be great

Who says that the Turbo is CDMA? I have a Verizon Turbo and use it in Germany with Vodafone GSM, G3, H+ and LTE without any problems.
Cheers

I think they meant to say that is CDMA based, as well as Verizon network is, but Turbo still has support for GSM, and if the bands are correct, it can have LTE also in other places.
I believe we should get our own forum, but not right now.
We still share many things. We have so little content that many of our posts in the general section should be in the Q&A or at the Original Dev, but we don't produce that much content.
I'd rather have one or 2 sub forums here differentiating. the Original Dev, for example, should be split in 2, one for each.
Having at least a couple of sub-forums would help a lot finding and sharing content.
I still don't own a Moto Maxx but it will sure be my next device and I'll surely unlock its bootloader.

Here in the states phone variants designed to run on CDMA networks are called CDMA phones, phones designed to run on GSM networks are called GSM phones. Nowadays of course the terms don't have the meaning they once did when a phone either was one or the other and did not possess broad multi frequency support but the terms still carry forward to denote variants built for either one network type or the other. In the states only on Verizon can you get full carrier support with the turbo, on any other network you will at times lose LTE depending on which carrier you use it on.
The importance here is that these phones will diverge in their development. Like it or not the vast majority of all Turbos sold will be used on the largest CDMA network in the world, Verizon, which is also the most intrusive and meddling carrier in the US and that alone means all these users will face problems particular to that network one of which is a locked bootloader. Whatever process sees that bootloader unlocked will be very different than simply going to Motorolas website as Maxx users will do. The recovery will be different, the roms will be different, etc.
As I said, you need only go to the Find 7 forums to see what happens when two every similar but different phones share the same forum. Users flash the wrong modems, the wrong recoveries, the wrong roms, the wrong frameworks, its a long list. In truth this could be overcome with ease simply by users employing common sense and reading before they act but the reality is many many people come to this site green and then flash without understanding that one little letter in a name can mean the phone isn't going to boot up. Then you get all the help me I bricked my phone, I'm in infinite boot loop, and so on posts. People usually find their way clear of whatever mistake they made but not all do, some learn the lesson the expensive way.
IMO its better to at least split the development sections and rename the sub forum something on the lines of Droid Turbo/Moto Maxx forum. There will be less problems and it's been done here before when this situation came up. I'm just an old man though and maybe overly cautious...
So theoretically speaking according the stats of the supported bands the droid turbo rooted and unlocked would be a better phone to have then the moto maxx?
It appears turbo has all the bands the maxx has AND more...
This being said, if the turbo gets its boot loader unlocked its a more versatile phone to own in terms of supported bands and network capabilities.

Theoretically and In paper, yes, it would be a more reliable phone.

Here is (from the FCC filings) the Droid, LTE bands 2/3/4/7/13 and the Maxx, LTE bands 2/4/5/7/17 so not the same and not more. The 3G isn't significant because almost everywhere either one is going to work. This means neither is better for any one person, which one will be depends on which carrier you employ in your home area, not the hardware. I say this because almost no phone will have 100% coverage (if a carrier is using a freq your phone has it) for more than 1 or 2 networks in any given area. In the states for instance the Droid has this on Verizon but no where else and the Maxx has it on AT&T but not any other carrier. If you for example use either on Tmo you will sometimes be without LTE because TMO is not fully covered by either phone.
Once you have the best phone for the carrier of choice at home you usually have a choice of several carriers when abroad so you simply get a pre-paid sim on one that supports your phone the best or is cheapest depending on what you want. I usually just go cheap since 3G is fine for short periods when a good savings can be had on a pre-paid which often vary wildly in price depending on various sales and promotions.
I don't see one being better than the other in theory and with the hardware being a push and user needs dependent the differentiation that stands out is the bootloader. One can be unlocked now, one cannot. I don't consider the small bit of bloat on the Droid a factor since it can be easily gone around.

Droid Razr for CDMA and international shared the same forum section and the development for both phones was fantastic. I think it was because they shared the page that the CDMA development was kept alive. No I don't think they should have separate forums, but that is my opinion.

Mobile WIFI Hotspot does not work on stock.

I bought my G4 just over a month ago and am extremely happy with it. But for some reason I am not able to enable the Portable WIFI Hotspot. It tells me "Your current rate plan does not support this feature." WRONG! I verified with my provider (Consumer Cellular) that this is incorrect. Not only that, I had the capability on my Moto G2 (for over two years) and it works now on my wife's Moto G3 (same plan, shared data and phone service).
To complicate matters even more, I tried out Resurrection Remix for about a week and I could enable it in that ROM. But because of other issues I returned to stock with Element-X kernel.
Anybody have any ideas?
This is the G4 Plus forum. Are you using the system hotspot setting or a different app?
The system setting does work for me, but I am on a different provider.

I realize this is the G4 plus forum. But given that all of the ROM's and kernels for both devices have been merged in this forum, there is little or no response to posts placed in the G4 forum.
I am using the system hotspot setting in all cases, both stock and Resurrection Remix.

Fantastic! It works like a charm. This was the only issue I have with my Stock/Element-X combo. Now I can stick with it. :good::good::good::good::good:
just see if you have consumer cellular app in settings it doesn't show up in app drawer but it is installed check in apps in settings and force stop it and disable it and check if it solves the problem i saw it my self in my phone XT1643 indian moto g4 plus we don't have consumer cellular in our country and that app is still installed so i disabled it.it is installed default in every moto g4 stock rom
There are many others. They are not "installed" actually, just provisioned for.

Moto G4 Play on eBay?

I have a Moto G4 Play with a cell plan on it.
I like it a lot, and am thinking of getting another one. eBay offers this phone for around $50-60 new, and these are Verizon locked.
Suppose that I don't care about using the phone to call people, but instead, want to use it for WiFi and for experimental purposes like rooting and for catching the Nougat update when it comes.
Does this type of cheap offer make sense, or am I missing something somewhere?

Can't unlock the bootloader via official Motorola method on Verizon branded handsets.
The verizon variant xt1609 is cheaper because it supports limited LTE and CDMA bands specifically for the verizon network, no GSM bands, unlike the xt1607 US retail version for example. See https://www.frequencycheck.com/models/GL1Wr/motorola-moto-g4-play-4g-lte-xt1609-motorola-affinity and https://www.frequencycheck.com/models/AzWPV/motorola-moto-g4-play-td-lte-xt1607-motorola-affinity for comparison.

Does the Moto X Force (Droid Turbo 2) on Android 7.0 Nougat support VoLTE?

I've actually asked this question on a few existing threads but I haven't received any answers.
I just picked up the Moto X Force running 6.0 here in India on a sale, but it currently doesn't support VoLTE. I don't mind the wait, but it'll be absolutely useless for me if VoLTE is still unsupported post the upcoming Nougat update. If anyone could help me with this question, I'll be very grateful. Thanks in advance.
No. As far As I know for both Quark and Kinzie only Verizon VOLTE is supported on the Verizon stock firmware.
A lot of India people have tried to get VoLTE on the Moto Turbo XT1225 (India version of the Droid Turbo) and it doesn't work.
Same thing with Moto X Force, the international version of the Droid Turbo 2.
When Motorola updated the Quarks and Kinzies to Marshmallow they could have added general VoLTE support, just like the Verizon variants had on Verizon network, but they didn't. If they didn't a year ago they won't with Nougat either. They want you to buy a new phone, not give more functionality to an older phone.

Is it still worth Im getting a used one for 8k?? How it perform after 7.0 update??
where are you getting it for 8K! Im using one and will buy another.
As for the VoLTE is concerned im using Airtel 4G and use my phone on 3G to save battery VoLTE will not add some extra MBPS to your device.
Its performing as fluid on Android 6 no complaints

It works beautifully with the 7.0 update, I however sold it off as it was useless to me without VoLTE. 8k is a very good deal if VoLTE is not important for you.

Unlocked firmware to Verizon firmware for WiFi calling

I have an unlocked Moto g7 that I bought from Best buy. It is the stock firmware, and I know it is unlocked firmware because there was no bloatware.
The only problem is I live in a basement where my connection is spotty (at best) and Verizon doesn't allow unlocked firmware to use WiFi calling.
Is it possibly to get WiFi calling by flashing the Verizon firmware onto my device? If so, where would I look to get that firmware? All I can seem to find is lineage, which I don't think would solve my issue.
No such thing for Moto G7. You can either flash RETAIL, AMAZON, or RETUS firmwares from lolinetmirrors. They all work for Verizon
Sad day. I know this may be a dumby question, but is there a Verizon stock firmware I could flash to the Moto g7? Like, from the Moto g7 play/power? Or is that a big no-no?
No-No. Firmwares are not interchangeable between models.
Aight. Looks like I am doomed to live a life without WiFi calling.
I have Verizon. Moto G 7 river. Currently running Lineage. I have WiFi calling.
Interesting. Maybe I'll have to give lineage a try

@Phalanx7621 could you verify that WiFi calling actually does activate? I've read another forum that said they had the option listed, but when they switched it on, it would have switched back off when they returned to the setting. This makes me wonder if maybe LineageOS supports the option, but it still won't work with Verizon.
This is one of the other forums I read: https://www.reddit.com/r/LineageOS/comments/ah6290/enabling_wifi_calling/

I've installed a few hacks to and gotten as far as entering my address but wifi calling never actually works.
I tried to flash the vendor.img from the Verizon ocean version and no luck. I tried to extract the files form the vendor img from the Verizon ocean and make a magisk module but could not get it to work.
If WiFi calling actually works with LOS, please let us know. I would flash in a second as i have to use an old 1x extender at home because i live in the boonies and am too cheap to buy a new one.
