Did anyone else receive a free Alcatel 7" tablet when they got their S7? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions & Answers

I didn't even want the tablet, but they were like "it's totally free, there's not even an activation charge or a line assigned to it, so it'd be kind of silly not to take one for free", so I did. Wasn't even on my bill.
Anyway, if you have one of these like me, I just realized that the *latest* "Android version" (not PC version, though it might work as well) of KingRoot found here:
https://kingroot.net/wap
works perfectly fine. You'll install and run it, and then have to go to the Play Store. There you'll download and install SuperSU (you don't need a recovery to install it: it'll insert it into your system where it needs to go.) My device rebooted one time (the app warns you it will), and now it's totally rooted; no PC, no ADB, no wires, none of that. So, if you got the free tablet like I did, why not root it, since we definitely can't root the device we went in initially to buy...I guess it was like a 3-click root overall.

[Q] Some VERY BASIC (and I hope) simple question

I have owned several tablets, Augen ZT180, NC, GTAB etc.
Currently we have 2 NC in the house, one my wife has and uses 50% stock and the other 50% she boots off an SD card( shes not ready to commit)
the other is my son, his is a very happy 100% CM7
however, we just bought one for my mom (80+), mostly as an ereader, BUT with the ability to read emails and watch video of the boy and see pix.
Since it was a group by the rest of the family is not quite ready to let mom loose with Android, so its still stock 100%
However that being said there are somethings that I have been asked to do, to help prep it for Xmas that I dont have a clue on, and Im on a limited TIME budget.
I would love to install a file manager, for ease of navigation, no matter what I grab it either wont install or wont 'execute' (cant find it even though it says its installed).
Then of course there is the issue of installing ANYTHING else.
I LOVE XDA and have learned a GREAT deal here, so Im sure all my questions are SOMEWHERE but my searches havent found what I need. I guess most folks, boot from a card or go all in. Truth is with her arthritis my mom couldnt hold a card.
I REALLY like the NC, and think its a great device, if I "root" the NC will it boot as android or will it just be a 'rooted NC'? If I do have a rooted NC, what are the advantages?
I know most of you guys are busy writing new FW to make these tablets as awesome as they can be (and hats off), but if anyone can point me in the right direction I would be very greatful.
Thanks
J
The nook boots android whether you root it or not. Rooting just gives access to more of the features (a key one being market). I would probably set it to boot from the card and then load the apps and features you want her to use to the homescreen and maybe use parental controls to block the market, settings and anything else that she might get confused by.
You might consider MiUi from an SD card. It is a simple interface, reasonably large icons and runs well if you use a class 2 or 4 Sandisk card. It is an iPad-like interface, i.e. it doesn't use an app drawer. Everything is on the home screen(s).

VM Intercept root, then what?

this is for my girl friends phone and its stock right now and painfully slow so I convinced her to root but I'm used to seeing the ROM's for my phone so I'm not familiar with "what ROM will speed up her phone's response"? She only uses it for alot of texting, FB, and occasional calls. thanks!
Factory reset
I have an Intercept. And yes, it gets painfully slow. The problem is, for some reason, the ROM on the phone fills right up. Here is what I do. I bought a back up app.. MY BACKUP PRO.. $2.99 I think. I back up everything... and then do a factory reset. The phone runs fast... like new.... and then use the app to restore everything. Its a bit of a pain in the ass... but it works. I am sure its less of a pain in the ass than rooting.
I have a little checklist that I did if you are interested. Send me a PM if you want. But every time i reset the phone, it runs like brand new.
I recently picked up two VM Intercepts because, well, they were on sale and for $40 for the phones, it was hard to pass up. Not knowing anything much of the phone before I purchased, I was still surprised on how slow the phone responded at times.
Finally got tired of it and the first thing I did was check to see if the phone was compatible with any of the ROMs I had used previously. It wasn't. So I decided I had to at least try something.
The phone, first off, was a pain to root. I kept getting partial roots. Finally after Googling for a few hours I came across the InterceptRoot.APK and it worked like a charm. Has a built-in backup utility, too. After it finished rooting the phone I installed Titanium Backup and uninstalled the majority of the pre-installed Virgin Mobile Bloatware apps. The only two I have left are "Activate" and "My Account" -- obviously didn't remove any of the actual Android required apps, just the Virgin Mobile specifics. And yes, they were safe to remove, had no issues afterwards.
But man, after removing all the bloatware, the phone runs a good 35% faster. I'd say go for it.
I lost the link I downloaded the rooter at, but if you need it I can upload it and PM it to you.
You guys should check out the sdxdevelopers website. There's a lot more information about the VM Intercept there.
I would say to try using cuteromx, My daughters phone/my old phone, has it installed and using cm01 recovery along with the vampirefos kernel, it is working pretty smooth if i must say so myself.

[Q] Wipe, re-install without password

Here where I work I was loaned a Nexus 10 for some experimenting and installing apps that would be used by other employees out in the field. I'm not a developer, or for that matter, very familiar with android and it's capabilities. As a followup, I don't know why I was chosen as the tablet guy.
Why I'm here, though, is because 2 weeks ago the tablet disappeared from my desk. A colleague thinks another department wanted to do some work with it, but if that was the case I'd like to think they would have let us know by now. I found on the local craigslist a tablet that could be the same one. Low price, and just a couple days after it disappeared.
Said colleague thinks that if the tablet was ever turned on and connects to the internet, that it would check in and we could track the location. I'm not sure that's the case. If it was, though, could someone turn it off? If they didn't know the password, is there a way to wipe the tablet anyway? And finally, is there a way to spoof the serial number so any attempts to recover/identify it would fail.
So, I just realized how this could look like I was trying to do those things myself. If that's a concern, just answer in a way that could answer my questions without letting me or anyone know how do those things.
I don't know about serial spoofing, but whoever has the account password MIGHT be able to access it on Android Device Manager, if you enabled that before it went missing. Without that or some other anti-theft app you've PREVIOUSLY launched (an app won't run until you manually fun it for the first time), I think you may be boned
I've been under the impression that my office is a pretty safe and secure place. I regularly leave thousands of dollars of camera equipment in the open without a second thought, so a $400 tablet seems like an unusual thing to disappear. With that said, I didn't even think to install any sort of tracking or security app. If anything turns up, I'll post about it here.

You may be out of luck, sadly, then. The most yoau can do is change the linked Google account's password.

[Q] Work Phone Part Duex - Ideas?

Following up with my new work S5 (thanks to the guys in my other thread who schooled me on Knox). Bottom line, we moved from Blackberry to the (our) neutered version of the S5. I am trying to replicate some of the simpler functionality of the BB with the new phone. Now, I have a rooted G3 as a personal phone, so I know how Android works pretty much, but the work phone is pretty locked down. We use Knox for work email and stuff, and the Play store is whitelisted to select apps. No free downloading. Here's what I am trying to do...
#1
My BB has a stupidly simple magnet in the case, so when I put the device in the holster, it went to vibrate-only mode. When I took it out, it would go back to the normal sound profile. No fuss, no user intervention needed. So, TecTiles is one of the apps I was able to get installed, and I ordered some. I can program them to set the phone to silent mode, but am I correct that I would still need to trigger the device to come OUT of silent mode? It's not automatic when it loses connection to the tile?
#2 (bigger)
I have the wireless charging back plate, and I have two issues. First, the "DU-DUNK" sound when the device gets fully charged, discharged a little, then starts charging again. I can't install Battery Doctor to silence it, I can't root to silence it. Can I write a tag with enough specificity to allow sounds for text and phone calls (I have an on call job) and keep the rest quiet?
The other nut kicker is the simple act of going in to clock mode (like a nite stand). Samsung removed the clock from Daydream (FFS), and I can't install any from Play (all I have tried are locked out). Any ideas on that one? Silly as it sounds, I used the BB as my alarm clock, especially while traveling. Timley looks GREAT. Can't install it.
Any help from the pros here would be appreciated.

Question...
I didn't read your other thread, but do you have the ability to use outside Media sources? MicroSD or MicroUSB flash drives?
If so, perhaps consider locating .apk's that you want/need for your functions and side load them by running the .apk's from the external drive.
What I use... http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Andro...-fkmr0&keywords=sandisk+flash+drive+dual+mode
And I can't imagine them whitelisting the app to go with it, as it is a storage device, not something malicious.

Thanks for responding. I'm sorry for sounding like a n00b, is this functionally any different from downloading an .apk on the SD card and installing it through a file explorer? As an aside, the way the restrictions work, the apps will install for a brief moment, and then they are uninstalled by the device. Is this method any different?
Thanks

If you can manually put the .apk on the SD card, or microusb capable flash drive, it may work and stick. Not guaranteed as I have not tried on a phone like yours. GL

Yeah no dice, it works more like a removal than a block. It will install any app, then remove it when it checks it against the security policy. It's weird, some apps that seem just as innocuous (and are not on the list) install and work. Who knows. The whole thing feels very...unfinished. Like the whole Android enterprise thing isn't quite all put together yet. But I guess free it free, even if it's nerf'd free.

(Helpful Device First Run / Pre-Rooting Tip) Avoid Auto Update on first Power Up

As many of you know, the FireSticks and Fire Tvs immediately search for updates the first time you turn them on. This can be a catastrophe for anyone who was hoping to gain root access via an earlier firmware exploit. I discovered a little potential workaround that I am going to share here, but I want to start by saying that I have not tested this beyond what you will read below, and any issue you may incur trying to duplicate this is of course your own risk to take.
Today while setting up a refurb Fire TV, the device showed me a warning message about using an incompatible charging cord/adapter., stating that it may not be sufficient to power the device. However it still allowed me to continue. The device went through all the setup steps, and downloaded the newest firmware etc, and i assumed that it had update the firmware. Then as I was going through the settings I noticed the update had only downloaded to the device, it did not actually install it.
So apparently amazon wont allow the device to update when using a charger it thinks is too low of an energy source, presumably because it could brick its own device if the device draws too much power during the actual update to the device causing it to shut down mid way. This means you can possibly avoid the auto update feature by using a low quality micro cable, allowing you to attempt root or whatever you may want to attempt on your stock or older firmware.
TLDR
Using a low quality power cable/adapter could potentially stop your device from installing an auto-update at first boot. It will still download, but it will not install (or at least mine did not).
If anyone else out there has a new device and an older charging cable / adapter laying around maybe you can confirm if you get the same results.
I know this would have helped me out a while back, as I had a gen 2 fire tv I never ended up using for about a year and it was just sitting around in the box. When I decided to begin using it i thought I would also try and root it, but I made the mistake of hooking it up and connecting to my network and Presto, just like that the autoupdate on boot sequence jumped my firmware beyond a rootable build. So maybe someone out there will be able to save themselves from a similar mistake.
