WiFi HotSpot - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions & Answers

I haven't activated it yet because I don't want to start getting charged. Since the OS has a built in HotSpot feature, will Verizon charge me as if I was using their Mobile HotSpot App?

What plan do you have? The newest ones all come with free mobile Hotspot.

I still have unlimited data.

As far as I am aware it will prompt you once you start it up or once you try to connect a device. Basically telling you this will add a monthly charge. I still have unlimited data and use FoxFi for tethering to get around this.

Foxfi works great. Use it all the time with unlimited data.

I'm on with Verizon with no Hotspot plan and I can turn mine on on my phone with no issues as it's included with my plan.
"Will I be charged to use Mobile Hotspot?
Depending on your plan, you may be charged monthly to have the Mobile Hotspot feature on your account. Regardless of which plan you have, you'll be charged data usage according to your monthly data allowance.
Monthly Charges
If you have The Verizon Plan or The MORE Everything® Plan, Mobile Hotspot is included for no additional monthly charge. With other plans, you'll need to add Mobile Hotspot to your account and you'll be charged monthly to use Mobile Hotspot on your device.
Data Usage Charges
The data used by devices when they're connected to your Mobile Hotspot will be deducted from your monthly data allowance.
If you need to increase your data allowance due to additional data use through your Mobile Hotspot, you can do so any time on the Change Your Plan page in My Verizon. For more information, refer to our Understand and Change Your Plan FAQs.
A great way to thank someone for sharing their Mobile Hotspot with you is to buy them the gift of more data. Refer to our Data Gifting FAQs to learn about giving data as a gift."

You can't use the built-in hotspot with your unlimited data plan, it will tell you that you need to subscribe first. Downloading FoxFi however bypasses this and will allow you to tether without paying for the plan.

Looks like I might be buying Foxfi today

It's well worth it. I do miss my Nexus 6P and being able to use the native hotspot, as it's a bit of a pain to open FoxFi, then go to settings and toggle the hotspot, but at least it's something. I've been using it for a couple months with no issues.

How long do I have to commit to Mobile Hotspot service?

I am interested in the optional Mobile Hotspot feature and its extra-cost service. I cannot justify that expense if I have to lock it in for a whole two-year contract, but I would find it useful sometimes.
For example, if I plan to be traveling in a certain month and want to add this service for $30 for that billing cycle but drop it later, could I do so?

If you add/remove the hotspot service before your billing cycle they should be able to change it whenever you want.
Personally though, if you just root your phone, you can have free tethering whenever you want!
You don't have to commit to it, you can add and cancel whenever.
I heard that if you want to use the full-fledged mobile hotspot funstionality to connect to multiple devices, you must pay the $30 mobile broadband service, but if you just wanna tether to one device using, says, PDAnet, you don't have to buy the plan. Is it true? There are EVO users who claim that Sprint cut it off once they know you're tethering w/o plan even just to one device using PDAnet.

I believe the official statement from Sprint is that this is allowed. However, the last time I used PDAnet, it wasn't very good, and I much prefer the root approach to it, as that way you can tether via wifi as well.
The only way Sprint will actually know if you are tethering is if you are using HIGH AMOUNTS of data CONSTANTLY. Which in that case, they have the right to cut you off if its obvious you are tethering on a constant basis.
But simply tethering a few devices to browse internet, stream videos/music doesn't use up TOO much data. The most I've ever used was about 200MB when I had 3 laptops tethered to my phone for about 1.5 hours.
$30 bucks a month for tethering is ridiculous unless you plan on being tethered for days on end.
The rooted tether works perfectly on my Nexus, to connect laptops, my DSi, friends iphones/ipod touches etc and is best of all free.

Nevertheless, there is a difference between what the terms and conditions might forbid, and what you might get away with only because it is selectively enforced at the carrier's discretion. From Sprint's point of view, reading the agreement you sign, you might be considered to be cheating them out of payment for a premium service. You might think that "ridiculous," but you signed a contract.
I know about under-the-table, rooted tethering and hotspot creation. I can go to the dev forums and read about that if and when I need to. My question is about the business terms and process for following the contract.
The hotspot is $29.99 a month. You can turn it on and off all you want. If you only use it for the weekend, that's all they charge you for. I do it like twice a month with evo. I just chat with them and it takes like 3 mins. Most of the time I use USB tethering. I have 2.2 and cant root yet so I use PDAnet. Awesome little program. I have a good 4G so I use the hell out of it.
I've talk to sprint about it and the USB and Bluetooth tethering is fine. Free
Use PDAnet and it will work 4G and 3G.
If I plan to use the PS3 or Wii. Ill chat with a rep and turn the WiFi Hub on for a few days.

Nexus 4 has free WiFi tethering?

My Nexus 4 from Google Play has free WiFi tethering through T-Mobile! I'm on their unlimited data plan with no tethering but for some reason I could tether to my Galaxy S III...Is this for real or is it to good to be true?

That would be excellent. Anything to economize the process and retain unlimited data. Please let us know if this is legit.
Would solve a problem or two.
Then why ask a question you already know the answer to? It's a well known fact that Tmo nexi are the same as the play store ones. Oh, and you paid for it by paying $500 for the phone if you ask me.

They want you to pay more for a separate tethering plan if you're going to use data on a different device.
your in the nexus, tether away ,, now if your trying to say on wifi tether on tmo they want to charge a diffrent device id a fee that makes sense to mua

It's not free, the tether feature has been built into Android for awhile. And after awhile T-Mobile will block your tethering, so change your PC's UserAgent to an Android device from T-Mobile.

Being on an unlimited data plan has nothing to do with being able to tether in the US.

Yes, actually, it does. The T-Mobile unlimited data plans do NOT include tethering. No one is receiving "free" tethering because they have a nexus. T-Mobile will eventually spot it and block them from tethering.
if you have a nexus with the tethering on it your not buying separate tether cause your using your phones same id and whatever your data plan is 2gig, 4gig, 8 gig, or unlimited, your using your allowed data to share to your own gooods, now if you sign up for carrier tethering you use whatever allotment or data you signed up for to share however you may want because your paying separately for the ability to share,,
I thought that after that lawsuit with Verizon, the FCC said that blocking tethering apps was illegal:
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Verizon-FCC-Settlement-Tethering-Blocked-Applications,16583.html
Unfortunately that only applies to Verizon.

here is my experience.
After been blocked from tethering by t mobile in sept, i have changed user agent to android on my laptop, as using the link that is mention in one thread above in this post, then in december t mobile figured it out and blockedmit again. However using fox fi paid version wireless tethering is working.
if anyone knows a permenant way around t mobile wired tethering detection please share it with us.

Because "unlimited data" is for use on the actual phone. Phone as a modem or pam, tethering and or streaming aren't part of the description and violation of the TOS... You risk throttling, additional charges or termination of services. YMMV

Note: Right after that posting 01/07/13.
I was throttled the next day after trying it on straight talk. Needed to access the net via my wife's iphone to download the apn app to get her data to work again. Less than 842k file.
But I did leave proxy settings in, as I was troubleshooting their suddenly slow resolve.
Previously on my sgs3 I used wifi tether on and off as needed. Tethering my n7 and other devices for minimal use. Without proxy settings in the last 6 months.
It's in their TOS, that your are ultimately responsible for device compatibilities and even if your phone has a certain feature, it doesn't mean you can use it.
So YMMV.

[Q] Tethering Google Nexus 4 on T-mobile

The phone is a Google Nexus 4 bought from Google Play store
I tether with the built-in "Tethering & Portable hotspot" using WiFi all day Monday thru Friday on AT&T, and I have gotten text messages from AT&T about data usage and "click here for the tethering plan". I have a grandfathered-in "unlimited LTE" plan with AT&T and they do throttle me to about 0.3m down 0.5m up.
I am considering switching to Tmo because it's much cheaper (60/mo versus 110/mo), I plan on staying on the same phone and just get a SIM card, get the basic talk/text plan and the unlimited 4G plan. Now my question is... in the unlimited 4G it says
"Adds Unlimited Nationwide 4G data on T-Mobiles network. Includes up to 500 MB of Smartphone Mobile HotSpot (SMH) service."
Does that means I will only be able to tether for 500mb using an unbranded N4 with android's build-in wireless tethering function? Or Tmo is going to be like AT&T just send me text message once a twice a year? My tethering usage is about 2G per week.

That depends on what you want to tether to. I have found that I can tether with tmo to other android devices, iOS devices, and my chromebook, but not to a windows or mac computer. I haven't really tried internet ready TVs or my PS3.

They send you a text at about 400mb telling you you are coming close to the limit, then at 500 telling you that you have used all available data for tethering.

So you are saying that even when it's an unbranded n4 Tmo can still find out if I am tethering or not. But with Fox fi I can tether without being caught? I have used Fox file for years until they stopped working on my Xperia TL.

Foxfi used to work before.. now they have implemented a new check for tethering which Trekkie's on the headers of transmitted data. There are fixes that rely on editing your browser string to appear like a mobile browser but your best bet is a custom rom that bypasses those checks.
On the note 2 killajoule and Jedi Master worked fine. Haven't checked for the nexus 4
Just change the user agent string on your browser and use the built in tethering.

as of now, i have 2.5gb tethering with the unlimited high speed data plan. tmobile doesnt see when i tether my nexus 7, so that makes it easier to use the 2.5gb just for my laptop. i think they also offer 4.5gb for the unlimited high speed plan.
anyways, the last time i changed the user agent, i changed it to android(nexus 7 to be exact), it worked for half a day then they stopped it. oddly, i couldnt get data on my phone after, my phone browser kept sending me to the tmo hotspot page, and none of my apps could connect. i calked tmobile and they reset my data connection to fix it.

I wonder if it really is the luck of the draw, and if so I guess I am "lucky". I never really gave the tethering much thought since I got my Nexus 4 last year. I haven't used it that much, once or twice while traveling and a couple of times at work to test stuff using an outside internet connection. I have never been charged or sent any kind of message from T-Mobile. I am on the $60 dollars a month prepaid plan, no tethering plan and I have never hit my 2.5gb data throttling limit. Rooted on stock with TWRP recovery, not that I think that makes much of a difference.

Based on what I read it pretty much never will work. It has to do with an exploit that was used to hijack a setting to get tethering to work.
Is there a way to prevent the phone from updating, or at least get rid of the nag screen?
me too....help
My kid and I both have S7, he unfortunately updated to Nougat. No foxfi for him. But we do have unlimited data, the new plan. Verizon is only carrier to give 10g of hot spot tethering, he uses it as if he still had foxfi. There are no overage charges. He games, Alot. No complaints.

I believe tethering is included when you have a tiered data plan. Those of us with an older grandfathered unlimited data plan, we needed FoxFi to tether to avoid the $30+- charge. Now Verizon requires us to select the new unlimited data plan (that throttles at 22gb) to even pay to use tethering.

It's not really throttled it just puts you second to lower data users on the same tower that you are connected to I guess I don't experience the slow down because of where I live but even in the big cities neer me I still get full speed but I understand being on the grandfathered plans I was too at one time then I got a family lol

Google Bought Pixel XL - VZW Tether

Quick question as I have been skimming the forums for the last 2 hours...
I want to get a Pixel XL from Google, and use it on VZW new unlimited data plan and will be tethering, a lot...
The threads I am reading indicate that the Google bought Pixel XL will not natively tether without silly workarounds...? Am I interpreting this correctly?
All I had to do on my old Nexus 6 was edit the build.prop and call it a day... What I am going for here is a permanent wireless hotspot at my home that has no access to high speed internet services other than Hughes Net Satellite. I have a working 70db amp with 700-900mhz yagi directional and an indoor antenna. Have gotten speeds over 40mbits
I currently do this with my nexus 6p at my hunting camp in the middle of nowhere on my grandfathered unlimited data plan...
Thanks in advance fellas!
10gb of tethering is included with my new Verizon unlimited plan. After that, it charges. I don't think that editing the build prop would get you around this, but I may be wrong.

It should work with whatever plans they have, but mine is the new unlimited.
There isn't a tethering limit, it just throttles after 10gb.
There aren't any additional fees.
With the new Verizon Plan Unlimited, you get a 10 GB allowance of high-speed 4G LTE data for Mobile Hotspot each billing cycle. Once you've used the 10 GB of 4G LTE data, your Mobile Hotspot data speed will be reduced to 3G speeds for the rest of the billing cycle. Data will continue to be unlimited while your Mobile Hotspot is reduced to 3G speeds.Source: https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/new-verizon-plan-unlimited-faqs/ (#9)

This solution works great for me on my grandfathered UDP on Verizon. It basically bypasses the provisioning check when you activate the native tether function like you normally would. It also survives most updates and other modifications. (A full unroot will undo it and force you to repeat the steps to implement.) I assume that this would also work on your new unlimited plan as it activates the tether without going through the normal provisioning check. But, you would need to test for yourself on your plan. Good luck!

If I have a Google phone, on VZW, rooted, unlocked with a ROM on it... Will the tethering problem still be there?
If you run the build prop tweak we are all use to, then it won't count against your hotspot data but rather your mobile data
