Unlocking Bootloader/ Using Xposed may prevent fingerprint from working (may be Doze) - Xperia Z5 Compact General

There's a thread on the regular Z5 forum discussing this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z5/help/fingerprint-hardware-available-t3354800
Just a warning to everyone. This happened to me today. A reboot fixed it, but it sounds like once it starts, it keeps happening. I can't think of any rhyme or reason for this, but the one thing that seems constant is that all these people have unlocked bootloader and most are using Xposed
Edit: this actually may be due to marshmallow and doze

Well....now i know why.....?
I was actually wondering why was it sometimes not available, thanks for the info.

Actually,
The more i read about it, the more it seems like it might be a problem with Doze mode of marshmallow. Nexus 6p and 5x users are experiencing this too, and some people believe it's doze. I went into my doze settings and undozed the 3 items in there that were related to fingerprint. Hopefully that is it.

I have my bootloader unlocked, but I'm not rooted (can't figure out how to do it properly on this phone!) and I don't have Xposed installed, but I still have this issue. The fingerprint sensor will just randomly stop working. When the problem occurs, it says "fingerprint hardware unavailable" on the lock screen. I've just decided not to use the fingerprint sensor at all until this issue is resolved (if it ever will be).
I have to say, I'm really disappointed about the whole DRM thing. If I had known what exactly was going to happen with this phone I never would have unlocked the bootloader....

On lollipop using xposed for a while now and never an issue with fingerprint scanner.

are you on marshmallow? And if so have you white listed the three things that are related to fingerprint in battery optimization? If you'd like I can also help you with Rooting

I've had this happen once on my Z5C after 5 days uptime. It only happened after I upgraded to MM (185), unlocked bootloader, and rooted. No xposed. Reboot solved the problem at the time. Have yet to see it again, it's been a few days now.

Yeah, I'm on MM.
I didn't even think about whitelisting the fingerprint scanner. I'll give that a shot.
As far as rooting, I would appreciate your help. I've rooted and flashed my last three phones without a problem. I must be missing some step along the way.
Tell me how you rooted yours.

So, I sat down here and had another go at it. Got it rooted in 5 minutes. I'm not sure what I was doing wrong before...
Thanks again for your offer to help.

After 4 more days uptime, it happened again. Nothing out of the ordinary triggered it, except it was probably sitting untouched for about 1 hour, then when I picked it up again, I got the fingerprint hardware not available message.
I've now added the 3 fingerprint apps to the non-optimized list in case it's doze related.

I have the same issue, I'm making a switch to ZombieKernel (Zombie-b6) and will see if the issue persists.

I'm going on 4 days uptime now after un-dozing the appropriate apps, still working. However, after your observations, I am expecting mine to fail again. I will update this post or the Z5 post when/if it does.
There must be something unique to a small subset of our phones that is causing this to happen, since there is not a huge outcry of people complaining about this. I've wondered if it was the unlocking bootloader/rooting process that caused this somehow, but it still seems like there are not enough people complaining about this to be caused from that. One thing I am running that most others may not be is Android Wear. Anyone else experiencing this using Android Wear?

No android wear here. It has only happened me once after undozing, which was like 3-5 days ago, so it's nothing too bad. Before it was at least daily.

Hi guys,
Due to an issue with a button I got a brand new Z5C.
I've flashed .185 on it, it's still locked and unrooted of course.
Got fingerprint hardware is not available today, it seems to be an kernel issue and not BL unlock issue.
Edit: I had a chat with Sony Support (mostly to give them the message to fix .185) and she suggested a software repair with Xperia compagnon, did that, now I'm still on .185 but I completely lost my fingerprint manager. I'm manually going back to .163 now and hope that will fix the issue.
Edit 2: Never mind what I said, it seems my hardware is malfunctioning, I can't get it back online anymore, I'm returning it for warranty.

[Q] Nexus 10 screen flashes

I've experienced occasional very bright flashes on my tablet's screen, like a flash of lightning or a camera flashlight.
I'm on lollipop 5.1 now, but I think I've been seeing this since my jellybean 4.3 days.
Has anyone else had this? Is this a known issue? Is there a fix?
I've had this happen a few times, always when scrolling from one desktop screen to another, and only after installing 5.1. I'm using the Nova Launcher beta, and another user had the same experience and thought it was from the beta. Mysterious.
same here.. i had monitored the spontaneous flashing, this is almost every night around 10pm (at least in my local time GMT+8). I observed of course the sudden burst of light came from the led flash of the camera.
I suspect that this is some sort of an app permission that we allowed from installing a certain "malicious app" i dont know what app is that.. Maybe it took pictures of your sorrounding, data mining/gathering that is and Its kinda crossing our privacy and somehow creepy.
I hope someone would enlighten and help us regarding this issue.
I've had this happen since install 5.0, I've only ever used stock on my N10. When I installed 5.1 I did a complete wipe and only installed selected apps, I haven't even reinstalled the Amazon app store. Today I noticed it as I had the screen on but the brightness turned all the way down (for another problem I'm having) and I was just sitting here and it flashed suddenly for no reason. All it was doing was downloading a comic from Comixology.

That's exactly how it happens for me too - while reading, or doing something equally innocuous. Methinks it's a glitch in the hardware. I dunno how to report this to Google, or if they'll even listen.
Mine has been doing the same thing, I think it started with the first 5.0.x updates. A random flash, doesn't matter what I'm doing, can't predict when it will happen.
Running stock 5.1.0 rooted, no other mods.
Say Cheese!

Its 10pm Pacific and it happened to me. This is the second time. First time I thought I imagined it then felt a little creeped.
Now I'm full on creeped out. I tried recreating it by doing the same things. I had my thumb over the light sensor at the time so I thought...
But no that can't be it. My hands are always in the same place. I'm running stock. Anyone up for sharing apps that are installed and we can narrow this down?

Has been happening to me for the last couple of years, and in that interval I've installed several different ROMs and completely different sets of apps, except the basic Google apps that have been common. So if it is being triggered by an app, it must be one by Google.

I thought it could be AVG because I have the anti-theft enabled which takes a photo of the unauthorised user. I activated it recently to test it and my Nexus 10 had been flashing only since then.
I'm having this problem, too. I don't have AVG or whatsoever. It happened 3 times in a couple of weeks. Is somebody watching us or do they just need to supply their x-rated web sites?
Mine is doing this too. Did you find out why? Maybe there is somewhere a spy-app that has installed itself? Do you have a hint for me? I write from Hungary. Best regards. Eddie Taft

Sorry, I couldn't find out anything. And in any case it's nearing its end-of-life. Finding a good Marshmallow image for it was difficult enough; I don't think it will see Nougat, ever. The battery on my device is in poor shape, and I'm debating whether to invest in a replacement, or just let it run down and die quietly.

Weird camera effects

Anyone else have had their camera vibrate like crazy with audible sounds and the display for the camera shot showing sorta like a motion blur effect or like water waves?
Any fix for this if its a software issue? or hardware issue and i should get it sent back?
It seemed to be fine a few months back when i just got it and it was on B02, seems to have begun since B05 or B08 if i recall correctly, currently on Nougat 7.0 (2017G Version)
I think it's the OIS going crazy. I have the same issue, I think this is hardware caused. It doesn't bother me much because restarting the camera usually helps for me
Restarting camera is a temp fix, I would like a software patch from ZTE though
Here are my experiences with it:

There are like ten threads about this, and the only solution is an RMA. Or change the module by itself
I'm running in to the same problem with my device recently. It seems like the problem is occurring increasingly more often..

Was / is the same for me! But then again if OIS was completely broken, wouldn't it occure every time? But as I stated before this seems to mostly happen to me, when my phone is used in very hot conditions (hot day and out in direct sunlight for some time). I've tried using it in "cooler" circumstances and did not have this issue there so far.... So I don't know if I'm going to send my phone in right now... honestly I'd rather not. :/
Consider it to be faulty and return it. There isn't any amount of software that can fix it. I talked with ZTE and they said it was hardware related. RMA is the only way. My OIS slowly started to die. It would only happen 1/10 times and by the time I sent it in, it was happening 9.9/10 times.

PUBG Mobile on essential

Has anyone else here played this game on the essential phone? I have a couple of strange glitches. I initially thought they were associated to my original faulty device, but after receiving my warranty replacement that is not faulty the same issues still persist on PUBG Mobile. So I am assuming it's something with this phone in general.
First glitch is some artifacting during the loading screen on the notch end of the phone. I am assuming this is because of the screen resizing to accommodate for the notch. It seems like it starts to attempt to resize the screen a few times in a row every once in a while resulting in what looks like some screen glitching. I've noticed this in other apps while using them too like chrome and OfferUp. Looks like every once in a while the app suddenly attempts to resize back to full screen mode for a split second, then immediately shrinks back down again to cut out the notch area.
Other issue is while using both fingers on the screen at the same time. Moving while aiming for instance it will spin my character around a little bit.
Doesn't display any of this behavior on any other phones I've ever had. I already contacted the publisher of the game but Wondering if anyone else has these issues and knows a workaround.

Strange, I don't at all. I full wiped and flashed from fastboot though. Did you ota?
So you still have the graphical glitches?
How do I get P?
Also is it possible to force games and other apps to utilize the full screen pace around the notch? As much as I don't like apple I do notice in YouTube videos that it does fully utilize the notch area on the iPhone X.
Alright nevermind found the settings in developer options from YouTube video to force all apps to use the notch area.

Yes! God, I thought I was the only one with the multi touch issue..but I'm too lazy and stupid to get P so I suppose I'm out of luck.
There's a fix for the multi touch glitch bug. It's a magisk module called "Pixel 8.1 multi-touch fix".
Let me warn you, DO NOT install it if you are on the stock essential ROM, because it will fail to boot. It is only safe on AOSP based ROMs. I can only vouch for myself that it works flawlessly with lineage. If you are on stock ROM you'll have to wait until essential releases a fix.
I just read up on it a little. Apparently it's an issue with all phones running 8.1.0 Oreo witch I did not know. My original essential PH1 was faulty, kept crashing and rebooting so I thought this was part of the faulty device.
Looks like they plan to release a fix in June security update.

Nexus 6P horrible lag issue when rooted

So I picked up a 6P again after I got rid of my original a couple years ago. It arrived yesterday and I got it all setup, but then it started having issues that night. So I did a factory reset. I should mention that the very first thing I did when I got it was root it and install elementalx. Didn't bother with a ROM since Pure Nexus hasn't been supported for awhile (which is what I installed on my old 6P) and I was already running Oreo.
Today was going great until about an hour ago. I unplugged it from charging and the same symptoms as last night happened. When this happens I have to hold the power button until the device reboots.
What happens is that severe lag happens. The screen turns on after a few seconds when I use the fingerprint scanner or power button, but it's very slow and glitchy. Like it'll show half the notification bar and below that there will be a 2 inch long by 1 inch long rectangle in the upper left corner that shows the bottom of my wallpaper. The rest of the screen will show my wallpaper but it'll be glitched, where like the bottom is actually a section of the top. And trying to pull down the notification shade is just impossible. It glitches big time but after lagging of course. I really wish I had pictures to better explain. If it happens again I'll be sure to take some.
From what I've said though, does anyone have any idea why this is happening?
I have a few days where I can still return the device, but I really would like to keep it since it's in mint condition. Battery life is great still and there doesn't seem to be any performance issues when it's working properly. I really don't want to keep doing resets, which if I'd have to then I don't see any point in keeping it since it basically won't be usable.
Edit: 9:37pm
Just had it happen again so I took some pictures. It got to the point the screen wouldn't come on at all, so I had to hold the power button again to reboot. But I found out it still registers the fingerprint to unlock (I hear the sound) and hitting the power button twice still launches the camera (the phone vibrates). When this first started happening this time, after waiting for a little bit with the screen on, I got the popup that the System UI wasn't responding.
Just wanted to update that I flashed the stock ota from Google's site for the October 2018 update. Since doing so the phone has been working fine *knocks on wood*. So right now I'm thinking there was an issue with rooting, elementalx, or magisk. I'll make a backup and do those things one at a time and see when/if my issues return.
Just another update for those who stumble across this topic from Google or whatever.
Things were working great for a few days so I decided to go ahead and root but not install elementalx or anything. Did so last night and upon waking up this morning the phone was having the lag issue again. So it seems rooting is causing my problem. I used magisk, so I'm going to try SuperSU and see if that causes my problem as well.
Switching from magisk to SuperSU did not solve my problem. The phone started freezing up and lagging bad again, requiring me to hold the power button and reboot. So I guess I'll just unroot again and leave it that way.
Unless someone seeing this has any other ideas.
I dont recommend oreo. Im having a lot of issues like the worst of all not being able to install TWRP, lag, screen stutters and excessive battery usage
I love Oreo. Have zero problems with it, my problems are this specific phone. Don't root it and it works flawlessly. Oreo runs better for me than any previous version of Android ever, especially on older lower spec devices. There is zero reason something as powerful as the 6P can't handle it.
TWRP installed without issue, never had an issue with it and Oreo shouldn't affect it anyways. I've got the phone running kind of stock. I installed TWRP and ElementalX and left it at that. Using other apps and adb commands I was able to install a bunch of "Pixel only" stuff and get what I wanted without root. So I'm happy.
The thing's just a side project next to my Note 9 anyways. So long as the hardware issues stay at bay that render the 6P worthless, I'll stay happy.
Sounds like to me you need to do a full re-flash from the stock files on Google's Nexus site and start fresh. Or yours is starting to show signs of the hardware defects.
Either way, this topic is moot to me now I guess. Mainly just left it here in case others find it through Google searches. Good luck!
Whenever I do a major android version upgrade I wipe internal storage. I found that if I didn't do this would get all kinds of little issues. Internal storage carries over files from one android version to the next.
My 6P is doing very similar as yours is. Extreme lagging, basically totally freezing and sometimes half the screen is visible just like on your pictures. I haven't find a solution to it, but you are saying not rooting it fixed it for you? Seems far-fetched but I guess I have no other option. I have been using Lineage OS.
Yeah, removing root instantly fixed the issues for me. I made sure to clear cache and everything like that from recovery too. I'm still unlocked and using TWRP with Elementalx, setup however I like. I just can't root. Soon as I do I can actually feel a little slowdown in using the phone, and then after a day or so the horrible lag with freezing and stuff starts.
Not sure about using a custom ROM since like I said I didn't try it on this phone. My original 6P didn't have any of these issues and I could root, ROM, and modify my heart out.
So to recap, currently and since my last actual update here basically, I've been unlocked, using elementalx and TWRP, but running stock October 2018 Oreo ROM and all that. I used adb commands to get Greenify setup as close to root settings as possible, and to install some Pixel stuff to get night light and whatnot. Got immersive mode by using systemuituner app. And a couple other things to get it as close to how my original 6P was on Pure Nexus.
Hope this helps. I'll be glad to provide anything else I can.

Take your conspiracy theories elsewhere. Oreo runs smooth as butter on perfectly (or even in my case, not perfectly since it won't root) fine 6P's. Everything works as it should and I have zero issues and zero lag. All you're doing is cluttering up my topic on something that has absolutely nothing to do with Oreo. This topic is about the issues I'm having after rooting, nothing else. If you don't like Oreo, fine. If you think a device that's several years old at this point isn't running the newest OS as smooth as it ran older ones, that's fine too. Especially since Google has at this point completely disowned the Nexus nameplate. Just don't come into someone else's topic and run your mouth. I told you before I had no issues with Oreo and that it sounds like your device is showing odd behavior, if you didn't like that... well that's fine too. Why subscribe to this topic and keep coming back if it has nothing to do with you. Go away or contribute helpful info to the issue at hand here; rooting complications not Oreo.
Although at this point I'm not having any issues. My 6P has been running buttery smooth since I removed root on what, October 18th... that's about two weeks ago. And this includes installing and tweaking stuff on it that it's supposedly too obsolete to run and only Pixel devices can handle. It goes toe to toe with my Note 9 in daily activities, all while running Oreo.

It wasnt for you but in general, there are more users complaining about it. I tested oreo without rooting and it lags as hell. You can even check comparison videos too... this topic is about having lag issues so I gave you an answer, go back to nougat.

I told you the first time you mentioned that "solution" , Nougat isn't an option for me and shouldn't be because I'm pretty sure I made it clear Oreo wasn't the problem. I even made it clear I basically solved my issue before your first foray into this thread.
I made it clear again in my last post.
I really don't care if there are comparison videos, I have absolutely zero lag if I'm unrooted. That is what this topic is about, lag caused by root. Those who actually spend the time to read more than the topic title can understand that. I've been working with electronics for a long long time, I know how to diagnose everything and I think I made that pretty clear by providing updates as I did things. If not for the fact the thing is all setup and running great, I'd wager I could go back to Nougat and still have root lag issues. The 6P and the 5X for that matter, are ticking time bombs. They both have hardware defects that basically turn them into fancy paperweights. Those defects could be causing my issues, your issues, and edda's issues. No real way to tell that until the bootloops or early shutdowns start. I'm of course hoping this late in the game that maybe those of us with still functioning units don't have those issues, but my gut tells me it's always a "time will tell" issue.

If that was a hardware issue Id be having it with other versions of android but no, only oreo. And everything points out that oreo is the issue. Not only me but all the users posting videos and on forums

Oreo is crap on the nexus 6p. Seems.like google is slowing it down. Not only on the operating sysyem but also on its latest apps. The latest version of maps is too laggy but the one that comes with nougat is smooth. Thats why i went back to nougat is lile heaven and hell. Shame on goole being thay oreo runs very good on the 5x but not the 6p

I agree with you on that. I have had much better luck running Pure Nexus over any other rom.

I had problems similar to this and found out it was the immersive mode causing it, activating it with any app caused problems. If you download terminal emulator and use some commands that can be found elsewhere in the Nexus 6p part of the forum it works fine. Hope this helps. Currently on Resurrection remix with magisk installed. Running smooth as butter. Just waiting for pie to be more stable now

Thanks but I wasn't even messing with immersive mode at the time. Or are you saying just having it present because I made uituner visible in settings that it might have been causing it?
My issue very much seems to be straight up linked to rooting. If I used magisk or SuperSU (really the only two I'm willing to trust) I'd notice the phone felt sluggish soon as it would reboot after rooting with them. It wasn't a huge slowdown though so I thought nothing of it, until the horrible lag/freezing issues started usually within the day. Remove root, and everything went back to normal.
I've since been using immersive mode without any issue, but of course I gave up on root.
And yeah, I hear ya on Pie. Soon as it becomes stable enough I'll be testing it out. I had 8.1 running on my Note 4, just sold it about a month ago, and it was running great. Only minor issues that were still being worked on. Being a Nexus though I have high hopes this'll be a bit easier to port to.

Im talking about pure oreo on the nexus 6p. Ive installed it many times thinking coukd be a bad installation but its just that oreo is crap on the nexus 6p. I went back to nougat and its working like a charm again.

Anyone else simply happy not rooting this phone?

When I bought this phone two weeks ago I was excited at the prospect of rooting it so that I could install my "goto" root apps.
I pondered it for several days and was about to root yet another device and I changed my mind. I find I am enjoying Oreo just the way it is and for me this is a nice change. I tend to root/jailbreak everything immediately. In the end flashing rom updates and fixes actually started to give me anxiety. I found myself dreading updates and it was becoming a real chore and wasn't fun anymore.
Anyone else enjoy this phone without tinkering with or modifying it?
Yep same here, been having this from last year and half, the verizon variant.. Though rooting this is pain and all but just like you I was too. Much into rooting and flashing.
This phone as it is, is awesome enough.
But i liked nougot more

It is an amazing device. The only reason I rooted it was to remove the screen retention with a custom kernel and ckal support. :good:
One thing, is there any way to increase refresh rate without rooting? Just thought about this for some reason.
With Oreo I do not feel the need for root anymore.
On Nougat I used root for KCAL, build.prop mods for 16bit.pcm.offloading & zero shutter lag and also mods for stereo speakers & no throttle.
But I've yet to come across any burn in on Oreo, maybe they fixed it by recalculating the default KCAL values?
They've also fixed the issue of 44.1Khz audio being output as 48Khz through the DAC.
Could also be placebo but I find the DAC to perform better now on Oreo.
I'd love to have zero shutter lag & stereo speakers but that's just a mild annoyance hardly anything to worry about.
The weird thing is that my performance have seeming increased going to Oreo from having the performance mods on Nougat.
The left picture is on Nougat and the other one on Oreo.
Now that I think about it, silent camera would be nice for the default camera. If the setting is there I can't find it. Thanks for the side by side. Interesting.
Yeah, I don't need to root this thing either. I have had this almost a year now. Upgrade to Oreo, and now happier then ever.
May be in future once we Pie ROM with second screen feature, I will think about it.
I used to have a Samsung Note 5, and rooted and flash plenty of times. But, it was a pain to keep up with updates. I learned my lesson to not root Android.

I imagine this is how most get out of the rooting game.
There has to be a serious need to do so and not just for the sake of it.
Though i still believe unless you gain admin rights over your device you do not own it.

First time not rooting in about 10 years, running Oreo and so far everything is good (battery life, performance, features). I haven't even re-installed Nova Launcher, the home with app drawer has been good enough.
The one thing I'm missing is forcing it to 3g/CDMA since I'm on Verizon and where we live in Colorado, there is more and stronger 3g towers than LTE so I've always saved a lot of battery by locking to CDMA and not hunting/swapping for LTE towers. I'm mostly at home so I've got wifi for any real data needs. So other than that one thing, I haven't had a real need to root. So far...

If you have your msl you can force 3g or you can install Xposed and I think there's a module for that. Inteli3g
This is the first time I've rooted a phone for a while, due to the screen retention issue. Else, stock or AOSP unrooted is enough considering most features are available these days

Thanks for replying, I've been trying to get into the field service menu for the last couple of days but will probably have to call VZW and try to convince them to give it to me.
Re: Xposed, since that requires root, that was the one reason I miss having root (Xposed to be able to force 3g, that's how I did it on my old rooted phones).

That wasn't my experience with Oreo on my H918. Perhaps I need to try it again. As I recall, I still had screen retention issues, which is what ultimately led me to rooting my phone to use KCAL. I would really like for this phone to NOT be rooted.

Close to two months after my quoted message I can tell you that my phone do indeed suffer from screen retention. The first month i.e up to sometime in February I did not notice any screen retention - but since having sold my computer and using my phone for much more it has started to reveal itself.
It's only visible in one app, and that's Discord with its dark gray background and the 'retention' is that of the keyboard close to the edge of the screen.
Considering the circumstance around my screen retention, that for now, my V20 is my main 'machine'. I'm not that bothered by it, I have a PC coming in next week - and if I remember I'll tune in some weeks after it has arrived and update whether or not it's gone(with decreased usage).
For me I had had enough with screen burn and rooted this phone in last December.

Yeah, I realized I dug up an old post. Sorry about that.
I may have to try running my phone in a stock form to see how bad it really is. I'm running into some weird issues with, presumably with Magisk, and I want to unroot my phone. The only real reason I can't is because of the screen retention issue.

Oh it's no problem, sorry if my post came off as offensive.
It is really not bad at all, and I might elaborate om the issue that it's only really beginning to show later in the day.

See, mine will show retention minutes after being booted. For example, after a fresh install of a ROM, be it LOS or Stock, I'll start noticing ghosting before I can get into the color settings or Kernel Adiutor to make the adjustments... that's just from the time in TWRP and the booting. I guess everyone's phone it a little different.
