Charging port (plastic around it) - scratches - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Hi guys,
I know it's no biggie and it's my OCD forcing me now to post that but that's what i've noticed upon closer inspection of my charging port.
As you hopefully can see on the photo, the plastic around the micro USB port has a couple of scratches/grooves.
Now, before you blame it on me, let me assure you that I'm very gentle with my phone and everytime i put it on charge i never force anything.
I know the plug has quite sharp edges but the plastic shouldn't be that prone to scratches, should it?
What about you guys?Have you noticed anything similar on your phones?
Thank you in advance

I think you are going a little bit crazy. I can't see anything, and even if I could it's just the charging port. Just enjoy the device! ?

I cant see anything in the pic.

But its on the bottom of the phone you shouldnt see it.

I've got old man's eyes, but even with bifocals I can't see any scratches on mine. And if I could, I'd just ignore them.

I didn't think to mention that most of the time I use a wireless charger, but I do plug it in sometimes. Maybe after more use I'll notice scratches, too.

Mine has 2 marks in the same spot it's just a rubber water seal.. marks are from inserting the charger they line up perfect

Same here , there are two small grooves on mine , caused by the two spring retaining locks of the micro usb

Are you serious? Jesus ocd stop it.

Maybe I should try that too[emoji4].
My only concern would be battery health. I know it gives you this ultimate convenience and all , but from what I've read wireless charging is not as efficient as the wired one. Lost energy turns into heat, and your wireless charger can get quite warm during charging. This causes stress on the battery as it sits on the mat...
And that of course , is a red flag for a craaazy guy like me[emoji12]

I started using a Qi charging puck on my LG G3. And on that phone, it generated quite a it of heat. I'm still using the same (non fast charge) puck on the S7, and it doesn't get warm enough to notice. Maybe because the S7 is designed for wireless fast charge, the lower current of the regular Qi charger isn't enough to bother it.
I'm using an older version of this one. Cheap enough to try and see. You need to use a charger with at least 1.8 amps to run this. The one that comes with the S7 works fine.

yeh my one as well but too late i discovered it. now i use wireless charger whenever possible

I know what you mean with this. I don't use USB often on mine so it doesnt have anything on it. I would recommend wireless charging. Its what I have done since day one.

I guess we'll have to either live with that or switch permanently to wireless charging...One way or another, it's time to hit the bumpy road to acceptance

I was thinking about getting one, as it looks like exactly what I want to run this in the car; but with those reviews.... ??
I may try the one from ebay, does it seem to work fairly well?
Got the same product at Walmart $15.88 USD. Works fine.

I have, it works. The cable is super long.. enough to get to the back of a minivan.
But oddly enough, they sent me the wrong plug, they said maybe I had a different version of the A500.. ahha
But they did correct it and sent me a new plug that fits. However, it is a bit longer than Acer's so it'll feel a bit loose. No worries though, it charges and that's whats important to me. The battery icon will show charting when lower than 100% battery (e.g. 95%), after 100% the charging icon goes away and stays at 100%.
I bought the Walmart charger discussed here and it immediately blew the 20A fuse for my power port.

I've got that one as part of a set:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/160653018416?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
Same seller even.
The car charger fit, but it would only charge for about 3-4 seconds; then the red light went out and it stopped charging. I tried it on several vehicles. I think it might be defective. It's supposed to detect a charged battery and automatically disengage, but it does it even when my battery is 50%.
The wall charger does not work. Interestingly, when it is plugged in, it reports as charging, but does not actually charge. I suspect the connector might be too long, and the pin in the A500 can't reach the back of the connector hole. This makes the unit think it's charging when it actually isn't.
I'm currently negotiating to send these items back for refund, but the problem with ordering from China is that there is often a language barrier. The seller did get back to me quickly, but his reply didn't make a lot of sense. I get the impression that he is trying to help me, but it is going to take some effort.
Hope that helps,
-PW

I think this is the one I did buy too. I have had reported as it is working fine but unfortunately since few days now I noticed that visioally it appears as if it charges but actually not while in use. Otherwise, when the device is of, it charges very good.
I think I might need to investigate for some thing more efficient, but where?

I can confirm that this happens with the wall charger I purchased (mentioned above) and occasionally with the car charger too. The tablet will report as charging (lightning bolt), but the battery level will actually be depleting. I've come to understand that this is a common problem with aftermarket adapters.
I'm not sure if this is a hardware problem, or a software one. It's possible that the charger pin might not be making contact completely. It's also possible that there might be a provision in the firmware that prevents charging under certain circumstances. Thirdly, it just might be a crappy adapter that can't handle the amperage that the tablet is drawing.
I've noticed that sometimes rebooting the tablet causes the car adapter to start working, but the wall adapter never works. This may indicate a soft/firmware limitation.
It will require further investigation.

I think I'll investigate this behavior myself too. After reading your post I actually remembered it acting flakey in a rental car on vacation, while playing music off my A500. But I was also charging my phone with GPS on at the same time off the tablet, so imagine the power load on the thing... I didn't pay much attention as I was driving... I practically never use a car charger home, so will have to try and replicate the issue I guess...

Scumbag charger: says it's charging.... discharges your battery.

Heh that's pretty bad.. My only problem has been battery drain while running GPS and Pandora simultaneously in the car. The phone is capable of pulling more than 700mA when you utilize all of the hardware, so there is no way to keep a net positive charge current. Also when the battery gets too hot (above 45°C, I believe), the phone will stop charging to prevent the battery from exploding
Geez what kind of USB cables do you guys use? I dont even use the stock cable that Samsung gave me, i got a blackberry one. Works great. Rim isnt dead yet lol

I use the cheap long cables from Monoprice.. or the stock cable, or whatever I have laying around. I throw out the cables when they get flaky -- but my problem wasn't related to the cable like OP's was.

I had the same problem charging in car. if using usb to charge it charges at 300mah but a/c charges at 600mah. so if you are using usb and have an extra cable you can short the green and white wires(going to phone) and this will trick it into thinking its on a/c. have not had any problems since doing this. i can go on a 6 hour drive with gps and music streaming and still arive fully charged.
I would like to see pictures if you have some.
I've seen this symptom with a bad flash. Something was using a ton of charge. More than my charger could put out. Hence, battery drain when plugged in.

i do not have pictures. i use heat shrink on my wires so i cant take apart to get any but if i can find another cable i will modify it and take some. it is a simple modification. just carefully cut the black casing from around wires(anywhere along cable, remove about 2 inches) without cutting wires inside. you should have 4 wires(black ground, red 5v+, white data -, green data +) cut the white and green wires then splice them together(the ends going to phone) seal it back up and your good to go. this is just simulating plugging into your a/c adapter. all the adapter is doing is converting a/c to 5v d/c and shorting data wires to tell phone its plugged into wall. usb is already running at 5v d/c so you just have to provide your own way of shorting data. you can ohm out your cable if you like to verify. 4 pins on conector 2 center ones are for data. they are open until you plug into a/c adapter at which point you will get short.
The cable did the same thing on my girlfriend's phone, too. Phone thinks it's charging, therefor no deep sleep, and it just discharges. It may be the cable/charger combo, thogh, but I KNOW the cable is certainly fault; I tried it with other chargers.

I actually had the charger port on my phone stop working, but Android still showed it was charging. I tried multiple combinations of cords and chargers, only to take it into Sprint for a replacement.
When it first started, it only seemed to happen on certain cords and in certain positions, but eventually, it stopped charging altogether.

Hyperion 4000 mah Mini review!

Hey everyone,
i've been rocking this.
http://www.amazon.com/Hyperion-Sams...ywords=hyperion+samsung+galaxy+s+III+4000+mah
for about 4-5 days now.. ordered it off Amazon for a STUPID cheap price.. and i must say.. wow. 5/5
I normally like Mugen better, and i'm going to get a mugen battery whenever they make one..but this a GREAT replacement for the time being..
i have a PEBBLE BLUE T-Mobile galaxy S III as well.. and the White back actually looks really nice MIXED with the blue!
Also i love the FEEL of the back.. i actually like it better then the Stock GS3 itself.. it adds more weight and SOLID feel to the overall product and i LOVE IT! it's better then a stock GS3 by far.. actually feels like it's own new phone.
The battery life? definitely top notch.. i get by 3 days sometimes with heavy usage, texts, FB.. Sync turned on GPS.. all of it.
Highly recommend this... :good::good:
.......me want...IF there was a case, take some pics please? C:

The only problem with carrying it as a spare is you also need to carry the battery cover. But if you were to order two of them..... use one as your main battery and carry the second one as a spare and you don't need to carry an extra battery cover.
BTW, anyone know how it might compare to this one? It looks pretty much the same but comes with a charger. http://www.amazon.com/4300mAh-Exten...external/dp/B008ARDVM4/ref=pd_bxgy_cps_text_b

Don't do the Touchstone mod.
Go with the Qi mod.

I had a friend ask me to do this for his device - I watched the video, investigated the screen shots and gave it a whirl. It worked great on his, so I performed it again for mine - both of ours works great and haven't had any problems.

i saw that one and was going to go ahead and order one but they are more pricy then other method but as well i emailed them and they said it wont charge through my otter box, making the point of wireless charging more of a hassle if i have to remove the case everytime

I did not try it with anything like an otter box - the knock off case I have is probably half the thickness of an otter box and I have no problems with that at all.

Again, go with QI. The charging receiver for the phone can be had for less then $10 on ebay and I bought a couple of Nokia 920 wireless chargers from the ATT website for $25. They work great with these:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/QI-Wireless...S_Cell_Phone_PDA_Chargers&hash=item485b6bc6cf
http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/accessory.chargers-nokia-wireless-charging-plate-sku6290260.html
They work great together and the and the battery does not get hot. My S4 charges in 3-4 hours with this setup. The Samsung wireless battery door and charging pad make my battery get really hot.

I have no issues charging through this case.
http://www.spigen.com/galaxy-s4-case-slim-armor.html
I went this route because the Samsung door was too thick for my case. I was really happy when I saw that my battery was not getting over heated.

I found a case that works great and still charges it on the Touchstone. It takes a little effort to get it to stick but it works.

Otterbox is too thick and heavy so it won't work. The case I have works great and I got it in 2 days via Amazon. Sadly, I tripped the wire while charging it when I was working on the car and developed a small crack on the upper right hand corner. I go to the mailbox and find the case had arrived. Sucks!

ya im debating what to do, might just wait for a while since i just got my otterbox.... and might pick up one of those cases at the same time as the battery adapter
Samsung Wireless charger plus Otterbox Defender
Today i received my OEM Samsung wireless kit that came with the charging plate and the rear cover. I was scared that the new rear would not fit in my otterbox defender. It did fit, it was a tight squeeze but it did close with no mod to the Otterbox. and it did charge on the plate.
I hope this is clear for those who were looking for a clear cut yes or no.

Has anyone's charging port cover broken yet?

Saw a few people over at AC say theirs had broken already! Getting my S5 today so I hope it's a bit more durable than a few days!!
no issues here...only opened it maybe 6 times though since the 11th.

I think the key to keeping it from breaking is to pull it all the way out and rotate it out of the way. Otherwise, you end up bending the little plastic arm that holds it in and it will snap.
Hasn't broke yet, but I have a feeling I will eventually break it

Yeh pulling it right out and twisting it sounds like a good idea
Mine is still good. I just bend it far enough back to plug it in

Hi folks this is a big pain in the arse this stupid door mines closed i get notifacations saying its still open is there any setting anywhere that i ca turn off thanks for any help

Mine just broke!! no hard use, just opening and closing for charging!!
S5's charging port cover is curved. Be sure to pull out and push in the cover according to the shape of the hinge. If you pull/push it straight, the hinge will receive more force add more pressure.

My SonyEricsson X8 has something similar on it`s charging port and it works fine for don`t know how many years now probably 3 or 4. Don`t see why we should have any issues with the Galaxy S5 cover as it`s made in the same way.

It depends on how you pull and push it. I personally haven't broken anything out of more than 10 phones I've ever owned and used, no scratches either.
It's a bit fragile, but it will probably last 2 or 3 years with a bit of care.
If a replacement can be bought for $5 and installed with a screwdriver.. I don't think it's of much concern.

My wife's just broke after 2 months of use. TMobile refer you to Samsung who say they will fix it for free but it's a 2 week turn around. Don't know who would choose that option. They also say that fixing it yourself or another 3rd party voids the warranty.
Had it for 2 months now, no issues at least yet

Some people will have bad luck or some people are harsh in how they handle equipment. Mine is three months old without the slightest sign of wear on the USB port cover. Regardless the part can now be found for less than < $1 and it only takes two minutes to install.
Voiding your warranty? Only if you told them that you did it yourself. And if you really thought that was a good approach, then you have larger issues than your phone's warranty.

That would be nice if that is the case. I hope it doesn't require a full disassemble as the S5's waterproof design is a bit of a PITA to take apart and put back together unlike the S5 that takes under 60 seconds to take apart and reassemble.

Here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZB9aFOFqDU is a guide to replace the usb cover flap. If you use your phone with a bit if caution it will probably hold for a year until the S6 launches

Well, Booyah! That's simple.
Needs to be put on a sticky-thread that has all-in-one info for S5.
