Samsung Galaxy S4 Data Recovery Question - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Guys,
I have an S4 with a broken touch screen and USB port that won't be recognized by the computer unless in odin mode or download mode.
I was wondering if I would be able to recover data in this mode somehow from my PC.
Thanks in advance

You can get into recovery and backup the data and then transfer the backup file into your PC?
I'm not really sure on this one since I mostly use my SD Card to backup and restore data.

Yeah, I get into recovery but it's a TWRP recovery mode and it wants me to slide and unlock and use the touch screen as a method of controlling the recovery mode :/
Not sure what do there? Maybe flash another recovery mode?

Oh right, my bad.
Yes, flashing another recovery would be great, you mentioned that Odin worked, then you could flash ClockworkMod and use that, it uses the side buttons so that would work nicely. Make sure to flash the approppriate version of ClockworkMod.

By "broken touchscreen" you mean the touch doesn't work but the screen still displays images?
If so then you could use CWM recovery to backup stuff and then somehow extract the data from the backup.

Do you have adb + the drivers installed? If not, do so now and then adb push the files to the phone. adb will work even if you're in recovery. Should be plenty of write ups on the forum about how to install and set up the required stuff.
is been a long time since I pushed files useing adb Im sure it will come back to me. Should I change to clockworks to avoid this in the future? Why is it not mounting

It can't be on the Nexus 4. If you don't have the files on your phone it's your only option at this point.
Edit: CWM vs TWRP wouldn't make a difference in this case.

You cant mount it as USB storage in recovery mode. I normally download the new ROM I want to flash before going into recovery so that I don't have to use adb to push it.

No Recovery, No adb (Windows) connection, only Download Mode!

I tried this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2582142, everything worked as shown except it won't boot to recovery. The only thing it can do is to do download mode. No adb connection on Windows, it connects in Ubuntu terminal because I was able to do the instructions on the link above. But I don't seem to know how to do adb commands within Linux. Is there a way to fix my phone without going back to stock? Thanks!

Do you have a nandroid backup? If so the steps from stock to restoring a nandroid are moot.

SOLVED!
After redoing the root guide I found out that I can go to recovery by doing the down+power repeat combo. From there I was able to restore my Nandroid! Thank God! Fixed!!! By the way my phone got bricked by restoring an older dorimanx kernel using flashify app!

how do you root the phone in download mode ? Teach me im kinda stuck myself
@tmoneybird
What recovery did you have?
Have you tried vol down+power buttons combo? This is how it's done: Press and hold the two buttons at the same time till you see the lg logo then release for about two seconds then press the two buttons again at the same time. Then a white screen will show which has in it the instruction to factory reset your phone. It will lead you to recovery mode. If this won't work there is a guide in the General section on how to flash TWRP using Linux Ubuntu http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2582142. Do this first then repeat the instructions above.

I basically wasn't able to do anything in download mode. The phone has to be off or black screen (on) to at least do some tricks using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2582142. ADB couldn't detect the phone in Mac/Windows except Linux own Terminal. It's weird. Good thing I have an ISO image of Ubuntu on my PC. It's the only way I got to flash TWRP.

you can either format data in cwm or in stock recovery format data/reset
or if that doesnt sort the boot loop quickest way to solve it is just to flash stock rom via odin
Remember next time before you do anything like flashing a mod or trying out something different to always make a nandroid backup in cwm - this way if you get into a boot loop or want to revert what you have done you just have to restore your nandroid backup
anyway stock rom firmware is found on my thread below

follow the instructions fully on my thread
you need to install the usb drivers
you need to put your phone into download mode (vol down home button power button)
cwm is not required and not used to flash stock rom via odin - you must be in download mode NOT recovery mode

Bricked Note 3 using TWRP app

I'm on 2.8.5 TWRP and tried to go back 2.7.0.1 using the TWRP app from Play store., (the Nandroids on 2.7.0.1 are much smaller for some reason so I was looking to go back). I'm on NK4.
Once it rebooted it got stuck. My pc at work (Windows 7) is not mounting the phone which it has in the past. I have a Windows 8 laptop I can try later however I was wondering if there's a way to flash the 2.8.5 recovery via SD card or an alternative way anyone may know? I have a Nandroid backed up and etc but ODIN is a no go since pc cant read the device..
Thank in advance

What do you mean by not connecting? Not even download mode? Did you try to get into download mode? Do it and flash the twrp again. Do not use apps from play store to do those jobs. Lazy and less safer than via recovery or odin. No you can't flash a custom recovery with stock recovery. Odin odin odin

SM-J510FN Dual Sim Stuck in TWRP recovery mode

Can anyone help, I rooted my phone last year and installed TWRP as part of the process, I did a backup at the time which I have on my SD card
the phone is stuck in the TWRP recovery mode, I can restore from my backup and it goes through fine but then goes back into recovery mode.
This all started when I tried to reset the phone back to factory defaults. I guess I wiped everything. Has anyone got any ideas how to get out of this.
I am not too familiar with TWRP, if anyone could point me in the right direction with a simple step by step guide it would be most appreciated.

I did try that, I found a ROM j510fnxxs2aq14_j510fndbt2aq14_dbt.zip with size of 1,379,794Kb
when I tried to install it I get a failure could not find META-INF/com/google/android/update-binary in the zip file
Error installing zip file /external_sd/j510fnxxs2aq14_j510fndbt2aq14_dbt.zip
Which is why I asked for a bit more detailed advice on my problem. If you could point me in the direction of a suitable

I have tried several custom roms non of which work. What I don't understand is why when I restore from my one and only backup
it all goes through ok the size is 6036MB it reports restoring 7 partitions
then restoring boot then restoring data, at the end of it I get restore ok then it goes back to the TWRP recovery screen.

Is your stock rom android 5 by any chance?
I don't know what my stock rom is, I can't access anything on my phone apart from the TWRP recovery screen
I do have another SM-J510FN which was bought at the same time which hasn't been rooted running Android 7.1.1
I don't know if that would help to determine what the stock rom is.

I went into the TWRP recovery mode then to Wipe hoping to do a factory reset, that went through ok and came back into the TWRP recovery mode
I then tried Advanced wipe and ticked all the boxes except micro SD card. Nothing could get me out of the recovery mode so then I tried a restore from
an old backup and that seemed to go through ok, but it still came back to the recovery mode.
If it was me, I would remove the back cover and via TWRP menu turn off phone.
As soon as the screen goes black, remove battery.
Insert battery and power on and see what happens.
Have you tried that? Or how do you turn it off?

Okay... when screen goes black have you tried to quickly start pressing the key combination to enter download mode?
For my J500 it's Volume down + Home key + Power (keep pressing until download screen appears) should be same for J510.
If you can enter download you have the option to use Odin and flash either a stock ROM or a newer Recovery.
If you want, you could:
Advance wipe, everything except SD card and OTG Usb. (How much was backed up? Did you tick all boxes?)
Format Data
Restore backup from SD card again
Advance wipe, tick only 2 boxes, Dalvik + Cache
Restart
Report back
Oh, and just to clarify... when you manually go to Restart in TWRP, no matter what option you choose, the phone restarts into TWRP again?
Bare with me, I'm trying to understand and help.
Thats the problem, I can't get out of the TWRP recovery mode so am not able to use Odin, I presume when I did my original backup
I didn't tick all the boxes because it goes through a recovery with no problem I presume the boot sector is missing.
From the TWRP recovery mode I am able to go to install and select a previously downloaded file but then it fails.
I have searched for a suitable ROM to download but am struggling to find one for my phone

You can update your TWRP with a newer version from here:
https://twrp.me/samsung/j5xnlte.html
(Carefully check that I linked to your model!)
.img is what you want to put in your phone. BUT... I haven't done this myself, so it's your call.
In TWRP you choose to install img and locate the file on your SD card.
My thought is that your TWRP is too old for the ROMs you have tried... (anyone please correct me if I'm wrong).

You can. There is an option to reboot download mode from twrp (might be reboot bootloader)
That will put the device into download mode and you can flash with Odin.
Alternatively you could go to advanced wipe and wipe everything like you already did and then just flash a custom ROM. You wiped everything you said and then tried to reboot. That's why it went to twrp because you wiped system, there is no system to boot anymore.

Wow, that worked, I updated the version of TWRP and then installed a ROM that I downloaded "resurrectionremix-5.8.4-20190821"
and all seems to be working, both sims are recognised and operational all I need now is to get my head around the UI apart from that everything seems
good. Thank you everybody who helped me through this. I almost got to the point of binning an otherwise good phone.
Once again a big thankyou to everyone.
