Picking up AT&T Pre-Order today - LG G5 Guides, News, & Discussion

I'll update later with my initial thoughts, but I am pretty excited to finally be getting a new phone, and am excited for how different the g5 is. I was told it would be in store one the 29th, but at least I still got it before official store launch. Also, I went with Titan, anyone else go with that color?
Update: picked up the phone and I absolutely love it. Wasn't expecting to enjoy the aesthetic or default launcher as much as I am right now. The phone is just so smooth. Screen is beautiful, and can't even tell that its smaller than the g4 unless they are right next to each other. The battery slides out easily, but never accidentally (you have to want to press that button), and it goes back in with a satisfying click. Charges so freaking fast. Nothing but love for lg right now.

No need to make a new thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g5/how-to/pre-to-hand-lg-g5-discussion-t3328613
Post there regarding picking up preorders
Thanks

Small video review of the Evo 4g

Walked into RadioShack and asked to see a dummy unit just to look at the size and everything. A Sprint rep just so happened to be there and came out with a fully working unit, handed it to me, and said "have at it"! It was so awesome I made this very small video review (not covering everything, but we pretty much know everything about it). Hope you enjoy.
Hi Tyson
did it feel a bunch bigger than your hero? I have a hero and wish it was a tiny bit bigger, but not huge. Guess I'll find out on the 4th! Pretty excited to get my hands on one. Thanks for posting it up.
Sean
Well I have to say that I love the size of the evo. It dwarfs the hero's screen, and in a good way. I am very excited for this device, especially after playing with it for around a half hour or more. It actually made my wife want to change to it, which she will in September when her contract is up. She is unbelievably jealous that I'm getting it next week, so I guess I'd better hide it when I'm home.
Thanks for this. I've been wanting to see someone just play the phone (camera, market place, browser, etc...) and it's great to see that it lives up to my expectations.
thanks for the impromptu vid.....can wait to get my grubby paws on one, i actually almost bit on a HD2 from T Mobile.

Should I get the Aria or hold out?

Should I hold off on getting the Aria in the hope of ATT picking up a High-end HTC Android device like the desire? I just having a feeling that I could be waiting awhile and I am ready to move to Android right now.
I have the HTC Touch HD fully modded to Sense and WInMo 6.5 but I am just ready to switch.
I have played with the Aria and I am just concerned with the Screen size. Its smaller than the one I have now.
Another concern is the battery life but I figured I would flash ATT bloatware battery draining stuff off the phone. Would it make a difference?
I just need help making my decision. I ahve played with it and it is zippy and fun except for the super sensitive dedicated buttons below.

have you checked out the Samsung Captivate?
I've checked it out but the UI turns me off and since having an HTC Device, I don't think I could ever change. HTC has soooo much community support and the updating could keep the phone relevant long after it should be.
I read the post between the two. I just cannot get past the Captivates UI.
I'm in the same exact boat as you. I LOVE the packaging of the Aria - its rugged appearance with the rubberized grip, and the metal shiny trimmings on it. I think it looks a bit better than the Iphone 4 and way better than the samsung captivate. But the captivate kind of blows this phone away in terms of hardware, and when I was using the browser on the Aria in the AT&T store today, it seemed sorta glitchy. It wouldn't respond to double taps or zooming in sometimes and it seemed like it had to load a lot more than the captivate. I'm also really drawn to the Sense UI, as I currently have a TP and I like the sense. I don't know if I trust Samsung yet with all the HTC support out there... I'm also hoping for AT&T to pick up some slick HTC android device, but I doubt it'll happen anytime soon..
I was in the exact same boat a couple weeks ago. I ended up going with the Aria and I honestly don't regret it in the slightest. I'm not sure what your plans are as far as rooting and what not, but I have a clean eclair rom (No SenseUI) flashed and it runs even quicker than it did when I got it. I can't complain about battery life, I can always make it through the whole day (except the first couple, couldn't put it down ) and have some battery to spare, you may have issues when you initially get it, but you'll quickly see the reason is everything that auto-syncs does so VERY frequently and you can simply lower that time and see an improvement.
I have used the Captivate and it is quite impressive, but I also found the UI leaving something to be desired. And again, I don't regret buying my Aria over it (I'm still within the 30 day period in which I could potentially exchange my phone).
As far as waiting for another, I personally wouldn't hold my breath. I'm quite suprised AT&T has received what they have so far, I was beginning to think jumping ship would be my only way to get a decent android. My advice if you are truly torn, would be hold out as long as you can, keep an eye on any updates as far as AT&T and Android (I frequently use Google News sorted by date for this, quite effective) and when you can't wait any longer, go with the Aria/Captivate and hope you'll get lucky within those 30 days and get a release
aria has been my first jump to android from many years of htc winmo devices. Although the samsung has more impressive hardware, who's to say when it will be as customizable as HTC devices or rooted (if ever). The community support for HTC devices is unmatched and that alone is a selling point for me.
The aria is a SNAPPY device, I say it blows any previous devices I've had in the past and is by far the best phone I ever owned. I even like the small form as I was tired of carrying around bulk large devices (att tilt2). It's absolutely the best web browsing device I've owned to date. I've not experienced the lagged someone else mentioned and honestly am quite impressed with the speed of the entire device (including data speed.. clearly BLOWS away all my previous phones)
I got lucky, I was ready to ditch comcast so I when I walked into the att store I signed up for uverse (got a great deal) and ended up getting the phone for 99 bucks with no contract extension, so it was a no brainer for me.
I would just get HTC Aria!
I have been hoping to get an Android phone. However, many of the Android phones available in the market are just too big for my liking.
The HTC Aria is nice on size and specs. Definitely my choice. However, I do not live in the US, and HSDPA 850 and 1900 is not supposed in my country. Sigh... no 3G support for me.
I think there's nothing wrong with settling down with the Aria as many of us have. It's all user preference...if you like a big screen and high end specs, go with the Desire, smaller screen and lower tech specs (but not to be underestimated!), Aria.

[Q] Soliciting advice so I can make an informed decision.

I will be switching carriers shortly from T-mobile to Verizon and need some input from experienced users. I currently have a Cliq XT it is my is my first and only Android phone and even though it is a nice phone it is severely limited. I want to get something more powerful and up to date. I have decided to either buy a Samsung Fascinate or a Droid X. Can you guys give me some pros and cons from your points of view. I have seen multiple comparisons online but I wanted the opinion of XDA forum members. Thanks! (pardon if this is in the wrong section or has already been asked, its my first post)

I just left T-mo, and I miss my Nexus terribly.
I went with the Fascinate hands down. Better processor, better GPU, better display, easier root, better camera.
I was on the horns of the same dilemma, Droid X or Fascinate.
Background: I figured out that, except for a brief flirtation with a BlackBerry Storm, the last six phones I've had were all made by Motorola. The term "Motorola Fanboy" sounds really, really strange, but I guess that's what I was... I pre-ordered the Droid 1, and got it on release day, had it rooted the day the root process broke. There's more, but you see where this is going.
When the Droid X was announced, I asked "Where do I put my money?" Then I heard a frightening term: "E-fuse". Of course, that turned out to be something of an exaggeration, but the idea was troubling. This was followed by "Locked Bootloader".
With all this, I still wanted one, but I wanted to actually hold one before I plunked down my cash. I'm still waiting. My local VZW store, Best Buy, Costco, you name it, gets a couple in once or twice a month, and they're gone by lunchtime. I just looked at the VZW site, and right now they're saying the estimated ship date if you order today is the 24th.
So between being locked up and unavailable (okay, I'm being impatient here), I decided to go a different direction.
I pre-ordered my Fascinate, got it on release day, and had it rooted within 90 minutes (20 of which were confirming that the root was persistent). Less than two weeks later, we're on the verge of a custom recovery
This thing is SUPER light, and WAFER thin! It doesn't have that bulge on the back like the DX does. I also agree with the description that the SF is "Just the right size". My neighbor has an EVO, and I think phones of that size are actually a little too bulky.
Don't listen to much about the things people are complaining about with the Fascinate. Every new handset gets some of that, and it all gets worked out in the first few weeks.
The ideal thing, of course, would be to hold them both, one after the other, and see which one gives you the bigger smile. I tried to do that, but wasn't able to. It's hard to imagine the DX would make me happier than the Fascinate though...
And, of course, the universal disclaimer, YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY!
You're not going to go wrong either way, btw...

yes, its 14 or 15 min but worth the watch if your considering the fascinate or the X.
Fascinate. End of discussion.

Thanks guys
Thanx for all of your responses! From what I have seen and what you guys are saying the Fascinate sounds like the better device. I just have a few doubts... Mainly the GPS issues, Bing, and the fact that I don't trust Samsung when it comes to updates.
This thread has also helped push me towards the fascinate... I always thought the droid x was too big anyway.
But now I'm mostly concerned about the GPS just like the OP... The update thing is unsettling too... I would hope they plan on putting gingerbread on these phones :O

Dude get the Fascinate. I went from a Nexus, to the Evo and just came from a D2. I'm completely impressed. The battery has barely moved 1.5 hrs into my 1st day of use. The Evo gave me HELL had every ROM and could never get the out of box comfort and ease I've had so far.
Only things are the bottom buttons, I have 1 bar less of service in my house..haven't tested gps yet but these are all things I can live with and we're only on 2.1. Get it.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App & yes I'm a chick.
from what i have read it seems the GPS issue is hit or miss. thats not going to stop me from getting one. if the GPS doesnt work i will just keep exchanging them till i get one that does. of course it could just be a software issue but i think its to early to tell just yet.
Motorola + eFuse is the only issue you need to think about
Currently it hasn't been cracked, so if you want to install custom kernels, bootloaders, etc, I suggest you run far away from anything with the name Motorola
Not to mention the Hummingbird cpu/gpu blows TI's OMAP out of the water, as well as the SAMOLED screen
The only plus you get out of the X is .3" larger screen and HDMI out, which I'm sure we will get in a few months
"& yes I'm a chick"
LMAO, I love it!
My only qualm with the Fascinate is the bloat-ware. It's chocked full of it. I think it's to differentiate it from their Droid line.
You can easily circumvent it by starting with a launcher like ADW or LauncherPro and starting there.
Once you root, there's many more options. I would recommend staying away from the lagfix. You'll read more about it, but stay away from that one. It makes your phone act a little jerky which my phone actually has yet to recover from.
Other than that, it's awesome. You'll prefer it over the Droid X when the custom roms start coming out for it!
And it's super light, slim, and pretty sleek for a 4" screen phone.

Considering getting one, would like opinions...

So I am on tmobile with my SGS Vibrant and the sensation isn't getting me excited and the thought of waiting until near winter is killing me, and then I stopped and wondered why I didn't just get a tablet in the mean time?
The only thing my vibrant doesn't do that i wish it did was play dungeon defenders, and with 1gig ram and a tegra2 the transformer should play it easy. Plus I just want a tablet and being pretty darn cheap among it's competition without seeming to sacrifice much I just need the slightest push into trying to track one down.
Any downsides to getting a tablet and not upgrading my phone? Any downsides to getting the tranformer instead of waiting a month or paying a little more for something else?
Also I just read the pcmag review and was getting kind of annoyed. They kept saying it wasn't quite an iPad2 and complained about how the keyboard they got was buggy (iPad2 doesn't have that option, hell no one does), and that flash 10.2 is still in beta, but isn't apple pretty far behind in flash on their "mobile" devices?
Sorry, that almost became a rant. So opinions? Any one else who was like me (on the wall about getting a tablet) who took the plunge and now very happy/unhappy about it? I suppose I could order it on Amazon and would have time to return it, but I would like to know what I should be checking for at least so I can see if it bothers me or not.
Thanks for any and all help. I will now go look at the dev section and see if that gets me more excited or not.
I vote go for it! You wont be dissapointed. There are a lot of fun things to do with the tablet vs just a phone. Let your imagination run with this thing.
I was going to get the Galaxy Tab 10.1. But after finding out that it didnt have a microSD card slot that was a deal breaker. I then began to look at other Tablets. Then I found it. It had all the features I wanted and was cheaper than others. It also had an option for a keyboard that almost doubles the battery life. The decision was easy. I got my Transformer yesterday and I am super happy with my decision. Def go for it. Newegg had them in stock last friday at $499 free ship and no tax. I added a class 10 32 gig microSD. Came to like $570. Also tiger direct had the keyboards in stock as of monday. Have fun with your Transformer. Im very happy with mine.
Wow. When I posted this Amazon had stock of the 16gb model (which would be plenty for me), now they don't. Newegg does but there are no returns for refund (just in case).
I guess I will hold off for now since I am moving at the end of the month any way and shouldn't be splurging right now.
I ALMOST bought one earlier but so many people reported a lot of annoyances that I don't think I would get one without the assurance that I can send it back if I need to.
There's going to be annoyances with any device one gets, really. Especially with a first generation device like the TF. I really do suspect that some of the "problems" voiced are those of perception but, on the other hand, there are some bonafide issues that require addressing.
I've been fortunate, mine has been great. Rooted, Prime 1.4 and OC to 1.4. It performs quite well.
Shiznit... Amazon got more in stock, so I put one on my credit card... At least with amazon if I get it and feel stupid for having done so I get 30 days to return it... I think.
Otherwise I will be telling everyone how cool tablets are by wednesday and playing too much dungeon defenders.
However I already know to check for dust and screen bleed. Anything else to be cautious about? I probably won't pull out the magnifier glass or anything but I being a poor college student I don't want to regret my purchase (I will get the dock when school starts more than likely).
sound balance.
Flash is at 10.3 and Apple refuses to even consider it at the moment. The Android 3.1 update came with an update for the keyboard which it prompted me to install when I first connect to mine. No problems. Nothing close to a force close has appeared since I've had mine. Appreciate the product well enough I took some high resolution photos and did a blog post about it.

Does this mean like speaker placement, or speakers not being equal volume, or like imbalance in tones/pitch?
I've seen this a few times and am not quite sure what to not hope for. I guess I will have to pay attention to if the sound in general bothers me, but thanks.
And @4D, thanks, I will check that out. I hate how everyone bumps tech site reviews and makes it some what of a pain to find decent personal reviews (because, you know, I am not a tech site, I am just a person who wants to know what the device will feel like and not compare it to the ipad2)
see my thread "Still the new hotness".. I'm in lurve baby!!
I've had my TF for two weeks now. I have the 32gb with the dock. Bought it overseas in Australia (ended up being cheaper there than the US)! Apart from the fact that our company has complicated templates for MS Word and Excel, the machine is perfect. I've been able to VNC back into my full sized laptop several times, and it's really going to be a desktop replacement for me on the road.
I had an Asus EeePC prior, and loved that, and this is no different. My one annoyance is the right hand shift key, and that there is no keyboard shortcut for recent apps. However, the shift key is just a getting used to thing. As for the recent apps thing, if that's the only other issue, I'm doing pretty well!!!
Don't use up your upgrade right now on a phone. Wait till Christmas time when the nexus 3 will be upon us.

Not on contract at the moment, so I don't get upgrades. Maybe early next year I will go back on contract simple for a new phone (since the prices are getting pretty high on their own)

Time to Upgrade...

Well, about that time again. Had my ATT S4 for a year, and I had good and bad to say about it..
Hated not being able to get a bootloader unlock for it, being stuck on Touchwiz for a very long time gets irritating..
I have had a long list of phones since android came to fruition. I started with the G1 and never looked back. Hated apple and all they stood for and never wanted an iPhone, like most of us.
But its time for an upgrade and unfortunately AT&T doesn't have much to offer at this point in time. Just about the only phone worth getting with android has to be this phone right here, the G3. Ive never owned a LG phone, stuck with HTC until they burned the bridge, had the S4, and now I'm here.
My question, I suppose, is should I just get another android.. or maybe try that iPhone that everyone and their cousin has? I can't imagine going from android to Crapple.. but maybe it's a good change for a year? I hear mixed reviews about the LG OS, and it doesn't look too too unflattering. But it doesn't make me excited to get the phone, even with the fantastic hardware.
Can anyone here who has had the phone long enough to actually get used to daily life with it keep me grounded in the world of Android?
How is the battery life with the 3000mAh battery? How does the phone respond with the LG OS? How does the camera fare?
Irk.. I so don't want an iPhone but I don't want to be stuck in the same position I was with the S4, on a crap OS with nowhere to go, frustrated with myself for getting what I thought was a fantastic phone. I just want to be happy with my next phone. Cause Samsung effed that one up my last go round.
Cheers....

You're asking a bunch of questions that can all be answered with the many, many threads around here and by doing your own research.
I guess I'm just looking for one answer:
Do you think you'd be happier with another flagship device?
I'm reading through all the threads, but it's the usual, bickering and sifting through it all for one or two good posts..

Instead of crying answer his questions. He obviously did some research.
Anyways @OP
The phone is pretty good. The battery life will be better than the s4. The performance will be much better than the s4. The design is awesome.
The LG UI is very nice. Its simple and erogomic and does not look childish. It is also more functional with allot let bloat and gimmics. The phone feels really nice. The display is beyond sharp. Impossible to spot a pixel. The brightness is very good and the best part is that you get a 5.5 inch screen in a phone sized simarly to the S4. Its awesome. I had samsung for 4 years, will never look back. Its a nice new experience. Plus you get 3gb ram and 32gb storage standard. [emoji41]

Thank you for your response. I'm leaning toward the G3. Might hold my tongue for a week or two, so if I like it I can keep it, or return it in time to get the new iPhone on September 9th..
Or I might love the phone. Hoping I do. :good:

I personally love it. I too came from the S4 to the G3. The battery life is beyond anything I could of imagined (given I am rooted and have made cpu tweaks and removed AT&T bloat along with lg apps I'd never use). Bootloader unlock for this phone is looking very promising so hopefully that'll come soon (although an exploit has been shown that could possibly work on the S4 so I'd keep that one around for awhile longer if I were you). I didn't like the LG launcher at all so I switched to nova but then again I always use nova even if I'm on CM or AOKP. I made the switch to this phone purely for the specs not expecting to like the large size or anything else about it that much but I do love it. It won me over. Build quality, camera, screen res, battery life, again didn't expect to like it anywhere near as much as I do. I'd even go as far as saying I don't need bootloader unlock as I'm getting so much of what I want and need with stock firmware. One last word; don't switch to iphone. You won't like it, and you'll quickly notice its not even remotely capable of doing what you're used to easily doing on your android devices. For me iphones are nothing more than your pc desktop full of shortcut icons to apps that you feel are mostly useless. These are all my opinions of course and I don't treat them as facts nor do I expect anyone else to. And everyone's experience with their device is their own. Hope this helps you out on your decision.
Ps once Android L releases this phone is gonna be beyond what it is now and if/when we get bootloader unlock custom ROMs based off L are really gonna shine (especially CM).

I think you will regret getting an iphone after having an Android phone. It will feel a bit locked down. Like someone put you in a cage.

Glad I could help. I'm gonna see if this weekend I have some time to put a thread together listing everything I've modded to get the performance that I get as well as what I've don't to try and squeeze as much battery life as possible so definitely look for that.
