I tether with the built-in "Tethering & Portable hotspot" using WiFi all day Monday thru Friday on AT&T, and I have gotten text messages from AT&T about data usage and "click here for the tethering plan". I have a grandfathered-in "unlimited LTE" plan with AT&T and they do throttle me to about 0.3m down 0.5m up.
I am considering switching to Tmo because it's much cheaper (60/mo versus 110/mo), I plan on staying on the same phone and just get a SIM card, get the basic talk/text plan and the unlimited 4G plan. Now my question is... in the unlimited 4G it says
"Adds Unlimited Nationwide 4G data on T-Mobiles network. Includes up to 500 MB of Smartphone Mobile HotSpot (SMH) service."
Does that means I will only be able to tether for 500mb using an unbranded N4 with android's build-in wireless tethering function? Or Tmo is going to be like AT&T just send me text message once a twice a year? My tethering usage is about 2G per week.

I have the $3/day unlimited talk/text/data plan. Does that allow tethering?
Try using foxfi. Att delisted it from market.

That depends on what you want to tether to. I have found that I can tether with tmo to other android devices, iOS devices, and my chromebook, but not to a windows or mac computer. I haven't really tried internet ready TVs or my PS3.

They send you a text at about 400mb telling you you are coming close to the limit, then at 500 telling you that you have used all available data for tethering.

So you are saying that even when it's an unbranded n4 Tmo can still find out if I am tethering or not. But with Fox fi I can tether without being caught? I have used Fox file for years until they stopped working on my Xperia TL.

Foxfi used to work before.. now they have implemented a new check for tethering which Trekkie's on the headers of transmitted data. There are fixes that rely on editing your browser string to appear like a mobile browser but your best bet is a custom rom that bypasses those checks.
On the note 2 killajoule and Jedi Master worked fine. Haven't checked for the nexus 4
Just change the user agent string on your browser and use the built in tethering.

tmobile has gotten really good at catching you while changing the browsers user agent. but you can get more than 500mb for tethering. the 50+20(unlimited plan) includes 2.5gb tethering, and you can purchase more. all the limited high speed data plan include unlimited tethering.

as of now, i have 2.5gb tethering with the unlimited high speed data plan. tmobile doesnt see when i tether my nexus 7, so that makes it easier to use the 2.5gb just for my laptop. i think they also offer 4.5gb for the unlimited high speed plan.
anyways, the last time i changed the user agent, i changed it to android(nexus 7 to be exact), it worked for half a day then they stopped it. oddly, i couldnt get data on my phone after, my phone browser kept sending me to the tmo hotspot page, and none of my apps could connect. i calked tmobile and they reset my data connection to fix it.

Oh, so you have the tethering plan. I have the T-Mobile $30 prepaid plan (unlimited data and text and 100 minutes) without an extra hotspot plan, how do I tether without the extra plan and without the tether message coming up?

I wonder if it really is the luck of the draw, and if so I guess I am "lucky". I never really gave the tethering much thought since I got my Nexus 4 last year. I haven't used it that much, once or twice while traveling and a couple of times at work to test stuff using an outside internet connection. I have never been charged or sent any kind of message from T-Mobile. I am on the $60 dollars a month prepaid plan, no tethering plan and I have never hit my 2.5gb data throttling limit. Rooted on stock with TWRP recovery, not that I think that makes much of a difference.

why are you on a $60 prepaid plan??
for $60 a month you can be on a unlimited calls/texts plan with completely unlimited high speed data and 500mb tethering, without any contract. for $70 total, its the same but tmobile also includes 2.5gb tethering.

That is the plan I am on (at least, I think so!). I have no contract, unlimited calls/texts, data that is unlimited (although they throttle 4G after 2.5gb is reached) but was not aware that 500mb tethering is included. Good to know, probably why T-Mob has left me alone so far.

thats not the plan i am talking about. the ai am talking about they do not throttle you after 2.5gb high speed data. the plan im talking about is completely unlimited high speed data.
edit.. i see they changed their plans slightly. for $10 more than you pay, you get completely unlimited high speed data and 2.5gb for tethering. your data speeds will not get slowed down at all.

First post on the Verizon side. I've been on Sprint forever but am looking at converting to Verizon for their better coverage and better customer satisfaction (at least according to Consumer Reports). We went to the local Verizon store and it seems like we could save money by switching to their 2 year contract. But I want to confirm a couple of things with the forum, as I know sometimes you get, um, incomplete info from the sales folks.
On Sprint, you have to pay an additional charge to make the phone a hotspot. It is THE reason I rooted my S4, to be able to do that for free. I was told it is a free include on the Verizon smartphone plans. So can y'all confirm that is true, and talk about any issues/details I should know about? It would sure make the deal pretty sweet if that is included and pain free!
It sounds like it's easy to change the plan we are on for anticipated data usage. Most of the time, we have very little data usage during the month as we're almost always on a wifi connection. But we own an RV and can use a lot of data (hotspot) when on the road, for up to 2 months at time. Is it as easy as they say to call and bump it up for a couple of months, and then back down when done? Any pitfalls or costs associated with it?
How about roaming data usage? I was told at the store that as long as 50% or less of the data usage is roaming, they don't care. True? Horror stories?
Yes Hotspot usage is included in the plans for everyone except people like myself who still have unlimited data plan. You can also bump up your data if you expect to go over your limit and also bump it back down whenever needed without any problem or extra charges. Your roaming question im not sure about.

That's technically incorrect. It's not free on the $60 2gb unlimited talk and text plan, it's $15 each device(not a more everything plan). In a more everything plan it'll be included.
OP say you get 4gb of data.
1. On more everything it would be $70 for data and $40 for each smart phone so $150 total. The data is one allotment.
2. You do it on the individual plans on a family account, it can be done, but it would be $60 for 2gb per line and unlimited talk and text, so $120 for two with 4gb total. Add $15 per phone for hotspot, if it's on both then the plan cost is equal.
3. Edge, a bit more complicated but if you 4gb just get 10gb as the cost is the same because of the access fee discount per line.

Another question about the hotspot. When hooked to the Hotspot, can the phone still make/receive calls? Assuming S5 and Note 3.

You're welcome, unfortunately I understand it all too well as I work at Best Buy and I'm fairly certain it wouldn't as voice is still a separate network frequency and CDMA can't use voice and data simultaneously. When they do VoLTE (voice over lte) it will work. They're suppose to be rolling out anytime.

If you're in a 4G area, you can make/receive a call and still use 4G data at the same time.

Hi, have a quick question. I am on a simply everything plan at sprint for 70 bucks a month. But they check if I use the unlimited data with my hotspot. If I tether they limit the data to 3 GB a month and charge if I get over that. Is there a way to get around that?
I don't pay for hotspot but use it uncontrollably... With Sprint. I've been doing it for years without any issues. Paying the phone bill is my only problem... LOL.

yes I know, but you are in an old contract. I have that 70 dollar everything contract. And my phone sends it to sprint, how I use my data. I like to know, if there is a way around or if there is a custom rom out there, which addresses this already?
No way to bypass carrier monitoring your bandwidth. Use of XDA to try to steal from carriers, no matter how unhappy we may be with them, is frowned upon too. :highfive:

Up to the carrier, I am assuming you're referring to these offers that allow the customers to stream from certain sites without penalty? Again, you would have to contact them to clarify.

No, they have free data on the phone. But limit to 3gb when streaming onto other devices. I have already paid for the gbs.
I am not sure how cdma carriers route traffic. I know that gsm carriers rought traffic through APNs. Tether data is sent through a different APN than regular data. The file /system/etc/apns.conf has your default APNs for your carrier. Editing the tether APN to match the primary APN will route traffic so that tether is not detected partially. Then you will need to change the user agent string in your browser or use a vpn to mask the user agent string so that the carrier does not detect Windows browsers. There is also the tether_dun_required=0 entry in a DB file that needs to be set. And finally in /system/build.prop add this line: net.tethering.noprovisioning=true

I am on the 60 dollar plan and they are trying to force me to the 70 dollar with the tethering cap because i have a nexus 6p I am beginning to hate sprint i just started to do this because where i use to live i got no service and had to pay 40 dollar a month for wifi now that i get service I figured id use the tether well they say im using too much data and is trying to force me on to this plan I think I will soon be on ATT PREPAID BECAUSE I Am not going to deal with this crap.

I'm reading as much as I can, but I'm pretty much green! I have never owned an unlocked phone, rooted anything, or know where to start or if that's even what I need to do.
Here is my situation. My wife and I started a small business and talked with sprint. I was told unlimited data. I asked specifically if that was including hotspot. The answer was yes. I also gave to 2 locations that we worked in and wanted to know about coverage. I was told coverage in both. NOT! I'm Roaming at one location. I have not roamed in years!! Seriously??? WOW!
My questions:
1- After talking to them, I indeed have unlimited data... but only 5 gigs is included in my hotspot mode. I called because I got the notification today that I was capped until the 29th of FEB. My phone runs fine. Youtube.. surf.. perfect. Hotspot.. nope.
What can I do to use the unlimited data I was assured I would get? What's an easy work around?
2- I'm roaming.... seriously.... What the frick? Is there a solution for that?

Yeah, they cap hotspot at 5GB. I was told this when they tried to upsell me a tablet. Try FoxFi with PDANet+, or root the device.

I installed PDANet+ and purchased foxfi. No luck so far. It never asked about vpn etc.. Is there a guide on that? maybe the one I followed was wrong
If you are new, they have a return window. Take it back and switch carriers.

I'm so sorry, bro. So, so, sorry. I currently am using this phone under an unlimited data plan. For the phone, the lte is in fact unlimited, and sufficient, for all 8-10 phones on the account.
Hotspot.... Well, everything about sprints Hotspot "plan" is an absolute ****ing joke. Want 5 gb Hotspot data per device per month? 60 bucks. Run out and want to extend it?

Makes total sense for an "unlimited data" account.
And don't think you'll get by on the "limited 2g speed." I don't remember 2g all that much, but this is not it. It is no speed. 100% unusable.
What I did: Got an inexpensive phone that isn't locked down, currently I'm using a nextbit robin and an iPhone 5S, switching back and forth. I buy a 65$/month straight talk prepaid plan - full high speed unlimited data. I use over 100gb a month just in Hotspot data. No issues so far. **** sprint. You use up your measly 5gb of data, and you havd to buy a gig at a time, untill your service month resets. No other options whatsoever. You can even transfer data from other devices.
I really regret this phone. I'm on nougat beta, and my battery life is HORRIBLE. My phone shuts off and dies at 7%, after going from 30% down in 5 minutes of web browsing. Need to revert back to regular build and root. I was able to get unlimited Hotspot on certain buulds if rooted, but the root method for this device is inherently unstable, so... There's no real ideal situation with this device.

You have 30 days to take the phone back.
As far as rooting and tethering goes, if you use too much data or roam constantly they will send you a warning letter and eventually void your contract. I know because it happened to me on a two year contract with my Galaxy S2. I rooted it and was using the hacked hotspot as my home internet (I was in school living in a tiny studio apartment). One month I used like 60GB of data. I received a letter telling me to stop which I did (for a while). A few months later I again used upwards of 50GB of data tethering without a hotspot plan. They sent me another letter but this time it was informing me that I had 30 days to find another carrier and that they were terminating my contract. The surprising thing was that in the letter it stated there was ZERO early termination fees and I was able to keep my phone with a clean IMEI.
After reading the contract it states that Sprint offers unlimited data, calls and roaming with a fair use clause. Excessive roaming or data usage out of the scope of what Sprint considers fair use will force them to essentially cut their losses with a customer who they feel is abusing that fair use by roaming a lot or using large amounts of data. It's basically an amicable parting.
18 months later I was able to walk into a Sprint store and open another line without any issues
People who have the grandfathered unlimited data plan and have an unlocked Nexus 6p can bypass Verizon's tethering restriction (ie tether without paying extra).
My question is for anyone who has an unlocked phone like the 6p and has the new Verizon Unlimited plan: can Verizon detect the 10GB of tethering then throw you to 3G? Or is it not detectable because there's no Verizon software on your phone?
In other words: is the 10GB tether limit detected locally on your phone or on Verizon's end?
I was actually wondering this exact same thing, if anyone happens to know.

I just switched from grandfathered to the new unlimited. They cannot detect tethering at all as they do not have their software on the phone.

How are you bypassing the hotspot detection? Are you using a simple Entitlement bypass the using the standard hotspot that is part of Android, or something different?
Are you sure Verizon is not detecting it? Because there are ways--other than using Verizon apps for the hotspot--for Verizon to detect that your phone is being used as a hotspot.

By simply turning on the tethering option in settings.
And you're sure this prevents Verizon from seeing it?

wow i was thinking about switching from tmobile unlimited cuz they be detecting me to bypass i use pdanet with cable to hide tether and it works 100%. But I wanted to make the switch to verizon unlimited it's just that I'm paying 50$ a month for unlimited tmobile
I was also just browsing the Pixel Q&A and it seems some of them are having trouble getting tethering on VZW with the Pixel. I'm on a "grandfathered" unlimited VZW plan and tethering works no problem for me, no hack or tricks need, just use the built in hotspot.
I wonder if some of the Pixel users having problems got their phones from Verizon, thinking maybe the phones that came direct from Google don't have the VZW software that tracks tethering.

It's probably phones from Verizon.
I tether with my 6P on 7.1.2 and have since I got it new with 6.x.
Verizon doesn't do what AT&T and other to do to detect tethering.
I have tethered all my phones for years without Verizon noticing..
Seems like they can detect it now. As of two days ago I received a text alert from verizon saying I've been throttled to 60/kbps for going over 15GB this month. I can confirm it has indeed been throttled, even while using a vpn in any configuration. (I've been on the "new" unlimited plan since it was re-introduced and never had an issue with tethering until now)
I can tell you Verizon can and does detect tethering no matter the phone or plan.... But can't really stop it on the grandfathered unlimited plans. It's usually small fish to fry for them at this point. With their stance on 100gb a month or they cancel you has pretty much eliminated the big abusers (I pass No judgment as I just last week finally ditched my grandfathered udp). In the pixel they provided block after block if you were not an early purchaser and used depixel8 to unlock the bootloader from firewaterdevs. @ Jan 17 a Google update finally put a stop to depixel8 (it was after all a bootloader security flaw) and if you purchased a pixel from VZW that had been updated to 7.1.1 you were SOL. There have been some tricks to pop the sim card in and out to enable tethering but many were difficult and the timing had to be precise. I am/was a pixel owner..... Back to my N6p. Daughter got my wife's S7, she took my pixel since the 6p is too big for her liking.
While the pixel requires a bootloader unlock to root and enable tethering or install a custom ROM done for you already.... The 6p is VERY different from the pixel as far as it never being a Verizon issued phone as well as not having the split A/B partition (you'll all find out about that on your next upgrade) VZW is well aware of your tethering usage. Just a matter of making an issue out of it....which unless you are using it as your home wifi.......there are fewer and fewer grandfathered plans left to bother with.
I tethered while traveling with the kids and the largest data amount I ever tethered was 25gb. Usually more in the 10-12 range. I finally gave up the UDP because to add a phone for my kid (middle school now) it would have cost 30 more for data and I would have only gotten 2gb for her. With 3 lines on new "unlimited" I pay $15 less than I was paying. I'm not upgrading to the higher unlimited plan until I need to travel again. Right now I've seen zero difference in my service but I'm definitely keeping an eye on it. Honestly on a 5inch screen it's not a big deal to have dvd quality vs HD. Once my wife's contract ends in March from the S7 subsidized purchase 18 months ago we'll upgrade to the higher UDP with the 15gb tethering cap.
My only question is that 15gb per line tethering or per plan?

I also received the text alert and email. throttling appears to be set at 600kbs as per the email. using pdanet to limp along till theres a better solution.

Me as well (using pdanet), I have satellite internet as I am outside of City limits. Frustrating Verizon is regressing rather than progressing. Mainly due to greed.

I ditched my GUDP last month based on the info from this thread. I used over 30GB of tethering last month, and Verizon shows I used 0GB for tethering. I was excited until this month, as I just got a text that I hit 15GB of tethering and I'm throttled at 600kbs now. Something else I noticed is that when I log into my Verizon account, it shows I'm currently using a Huawei - H1511. If I remember correctly, Verizon couldn't recognize it was a Huawei phone on my account up until now.
Can anyone confirm if using PDA Net or ClockworkMod Tether works around this limitation? The free trials are too limited to fully test them out, and I don't want to purchase the paid version of the apps if I'll be stuck with the same tethering limitations of the stock hotspot.

Ditto on this. I'm now really regretting having moved away from the grandfather plan.
Thank you all for posting, you’ve convinced me to keep gUDP. I am tethering in excess of 1TB per billing cycle. On contract of course. Now to extend the contract...

Edit: Nevermind. I'm not sure what I did the other day but I can't recreate this.
So I hit my 15gb hotspot tether limit on the new verizon " unlimited" plan , I then was limited to ~600kbps as described in the fine print , I however can confirm that if I connect pc via usb or wifi hotspot and place pc or other tethered device on a vpn such as Private internet access I am able to then able to get normal speed ~15mbs I also streamed youtube in 1440p for testing for ~10mins . I will test tonight with my 4k tv watching netflix and see if I can continue past the 22gb limit and still get UHD streaming . FYI im on ipad and iphone , host device does not seem to matter the trick is the device connected to the hotspot must be on a vpn that does not use split tunneling .
