Auto Restart feature - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

I noticed with the 'Auto restart' feature (which is under Settings > Backup and reset) that it wipes the information in GSam that was gathered since last charge and GSam also stays disabled until you start the app again. It does not wipe the information in the graph charts section of the app.
When I manually restart my phone this does not happen. So far I haven't noticed other apps having the same issue.
Another thing I noticed is that Galaxy Apps updated itself after this 'Auto restart' even though this isn't supposed to be happening without Wifi active (Set in Play Store) and having the background syncing for Data connection disabled (Set in Settings > Data usage) for this app.
Weird behavior if you ask me so I disabled 'Auto restart' for now. Any one else noticed this?

3G always on?

I installed 3G WatchDog and its in constant use. I installed SpareParts to look at network usage and the first item is 0 and when I tap on it, it FCs. I am going to wipe and reflash the ROM later and take a look later but anyone have this problem or a solution? Or a way to see what app is using my connection constantly?
Not sure if this helps, but in Settings - Wireless & networks - Mobile networks - there is an option for 'Enable always-on mobile data' which I believe keeps your 3g running all the time.

That is probably one of the better explanations for what disabling 3G Always on does. Seems like it's a huge battery saver.

My Wifes EVO is having the same issue. Her phone is contantly downloading data. I got a clue when I looked at her data useage and she clock 14GB for the partial month.
I shut down services until I found the culprit. It was "People". I checked sync setting and all and it seems they are all set to 1 hour or more intervals. When I force a close of "People", the data access stops and goes to normal even if I restart "People".
If I shut down the phone and then turn back on, then it seems to start all over again.
As a bandaid, I have set Advance Task Killer to kill the "People" service automatically every 30 min.
I would sure love for someone to find a more permanent resolution.
Can't you just remove it from the home screen, and it will stop using the data?

Google Play Services using the most battery

I am on my 5th charge, and Google Play services is my number one battery sucker.
I have location services, BT, on 24/7. I only connect to BT when in my car though, so 5% of the day maybe.
If I let me phone sit idle for about 4 hours, Google Play services will be the only thing that consumed battery.
Any advice on troubleshooting it? So far i've tried disabling NFC, google hang outs, ambient screen. I am trying things one at a time to see what's causing it.
There are no wakelocks, because I click the graph and I show it's only awake when I am actually using it. GPS is rarely, if ever on. WIFI is never on, as I have green signal everywhere + unlimited data via tmobile. I also do not have any other always connected apps like facebook, or facebook IM, twitter, or whatsapp, etc.

I am getting the same thing right now. I didn't yesterday.
I know it shows Google Play Services if you have Google Photos backing up your photos and videos. It is defaulted to do it whenever you are on wifi I believe. I have mine set to only backup while charging. I still see the Google Play Services drain though even with it not backing up, so I think my drain is coming from some other place.
Yeah, I am going to turn off background data, and if that's the culprit. I will play with each of the back up options. I only have a few enabled. I do have google photo's set to sync when on cell network or wifi, because I have unlimited data I do not care when they go up.
I noticed an odd bug when I unchecked google+ and google+ uploads as OFF/not sync, my google photo option to sync was gone. I enabled it, and it showed up. I have since rebooted a few times, and disabled those (did this an hour or so ago), and it will still sync, so maybe that was it? Will report back.

I saw this after upgrading to the newest factory image. let things settle and it was back to normal on the next day. Also updated to play services 8.3.0.1
I actually tried to do a reinstall the other day, and it brought me up to 8.3.01 (2385995-440) ... which was what it previously had.
Are you saying you just wiped your phone and started from scratch again?

I didnt wipe anything. I flashed the system.img and vendor.img from the Nov. update and i then noticed that play services was eating up about 22% of battery on a normal cycle. Updated to 8.3.0.1 and after charging and watching on the second go around, it seems to be returning to normal. Down to 44% and play services has only eaten 4%.

4% seems solid for 66% bat used... i'll try that if this doesn't work. Does flashing just system.img and vendor.img muck with any data?
maybe try wiping the cache partition -
Nexus 6P Wipe Cache Partition
Power Down the Nexus 6P
Boot the Nexus 6P into Fastboot Mode
Boot the Nexus 6P into Recovery Mode
Press the Volume Down Button to Control the Highlighter
Highlight the ‘Wipe Cache Partition’ Option in Recovery Mode

What does wiping cache do again?
I disable.any Google apps I don't use ,which most if them,I have Google now always listening and I don't use chrome which seems to hit the battery,and play services is hardly ever in my battery list,but today a new play service update and reading reviews it's sucking battery by all accounts ,not seen it yet myself

After reboots it still is eating up battery like nobody's business. Bone stock not rooted too.
Wifi and bluetooth on, location set to device only. Google Now on, "okay google" detection from anywhere.

Battery Tips for Android
1. Toggle off High Accuracy GPS Mode, Bluetooth, NFC,
Hotspot/Tethering. Toggle on only as needed. (Set GPS Mode to "Battery
Saving" Mode).
2. Display Brightness - Turn off Auto Brightness and Reduce Setting
Bar to Minimum Acceptable to you.
3. Sign out of any unused Google Services like G+, Google Now, Hangouts, etc.
4. Disable Location Reporting and Location History.
5. Beware of constantly syncing in background Apps and Bloatware like
Facebook, Twitter, Weather Channel, Games, Google News/Weather,
Non-Push Email, etc. Set Sync interval for every 1 hour or more and
change settings to stop the syncing of data you don't need. Delete
their Apps and use their Web Page if acceptable.
6. Turn Off Hot Word "Hotword Detection" Always Listening Mode in
Google Search if you don't use it.
7. Turn Off Auto Camera/Photo Upload or at least set it for Upload on WIFI Only.
8. Turn Off Vibrate on Touch for Display, Keyboard, etc.
9. Turn Off Touch Sounds and Unlock Sounds.
10. Turn Off Ambient Display/Active Display Notifications if you don't need it.
11. Don't use a Live Wallpaper. Use a dark wallpaper if possible.
12. Set Display Sleep Setting to 2 Minutes or Less.
13. WIFI Settings - Advanced -
a. Network Notification - Set as OFF.
b. Keep WIFI on during Sleep - Set as ALWAYS if you regularly use
WIFI. OK to keep WIFI on if you regularly use it.
14. Scanning Always Available - Set as OFF - Wifi scans for networks
(location assist) in the background by default. Go to Settings >
Location > Overflow (three dots at top right) > Scanning and change
the setting for Wifi and Bluetooth.
15. Turn Off Always Vibrate in Gmail/Email.
16. Be careful of using too many Live Widgets and what/how often they sync.
17. Set MS Exchange Sync at 30 Days or Less if you use it.
18. Do NOT use a Task Killer App or Battery Saver App.
19. Uninstall ALL Apps that you never use. If you haven't used an
App in one month, uninstall it.
20. Reboot your phone at least once a month.
21. Wipe Cache Partition at least once a quarter or after every OS Update.
22. Consider a Factory Data Reset with a manual re-sync, manual
reinstall of all data and Apps after every major OS Letter Update.
Make sure that all of your data is first backed up to Google and
Dropbox, etc.
"I SUFFER NO HARDSHIPS DOING THIS" - this means that i personally am
giving up NOTHING with these tips. i'm not giving up any features.
there are no tradeoffs for me. a tradeoff or a hardship would be to
turn off PUSH email or use AIRPLANE mode during the day etc.
you have to find your own balance and the tips list is a start but you
must come to your own conclusion as to what's important. it's personal
preference but these are not a big deal to me at all as they do not
affect the function or operation of my phone. these tips do not
deteriorate my experience.
you don't HAVE TO do anything. the point is you if you want to
MAXIMIZE battery life you can turn things off that you aren't using.
it only makes sense. there is a FINITE amount of juice in ANY
battery. you choose how you want to spend that juice. by default most
of these devices have every feature set as ON whether you use them or
not. i prefer to change the settings in my phone to only use those
features that i personally use and need so i can maximize battery
life. i don't leave all the lights and TVs on in my house 24/7 - i
turn them on when i need them. i'm not giving anything up. my phone
does everything exactly like i want it to. i'm not missing out on
anything. it's no hardship for me. it's life. life is a delicate
balance. it's up to you to find that balance.

I am doing 70% of what you listed out, and google play services is currently at 3% of battery with 81% remaining, it's my highest user under screen with an hour. Don't get me wrong, great battery, but why is it using so much?
I wiped cache and it seemed to help a ton. Almost 3 hrs screen on time, 24 hours off charge, 35% battery remaining and Google Play Services is only at 3%. Much better.
its "Ok Google" "Always Listening"
I lost 12% in 7 hours overnight with it on and 1% with it off (On 4g)
Let me try wiping my cache then. Also, OK Google is not always listening, I never really use it anyway. I only use voice for texts sometimes.

Bluetooth is your problem. I turned mine off and immediately my phone starting to sleep again.
I leave my BT on all the time, it only connects in the car though (40 minutes per day). I do not see bat drain for that. I also left it disabled for a day, same google services % usage.

This has always been off, why would anyone even want it on. BTW, solid list, like I said, I do about 70% of it already.

Slight stuttering in every app on a brand new Nexus 6P

Hi!
I got a new Nexus 6P a few days ago, and I noticed some stuttering while using any app. I enabled the profile GPU rendering graph, and there are spikes regularly, which shows (I guess) that a few frames are skipped: http://i.imgur.com/9qEjRD3.jpg
Scrolling in the launcher (Action Launcher 3), Twitter, Relay Pro, sometimes the Settings app, produces the same result. It seems to happen in almost every app.
After turning the phone on for the first time, it received a bunch of updates that brought it to the last Nougat update (NBD90X, Oct 2016). Then I factory reset and transfered data from my previous phone during the initial setup. Then I noticed the slight stuttering, so I tried another factory reset, and then I set my phone as a new device and I installed a few apps manually. It didn't change anything.
Now I don't know what else to do. Any ideas?

Do you have any Accessibility Services enabled? Go to Settings -> Accessibility -> Services and see if anything is marked 'On'. I've found that some apps such as Greenify can cause extreme lag when enabled. This is a known issue with the Accessibility Service implementation on Android and Google has said they don't plan on fixing anything as it's not really a bug. If you don't have any services enabled then I'm not sure what's wrong.

New update brought back the battery problem

I got an update yesterday which was pretty small in size, around ~40 - 50 MB. The Android version was not updated to 7.1.2 so I presumed it was the monthly security patch and not the OTA beta. I'm on Project Fi and experienced my phone dying with 20 - 30% battery remaining with the Nougat update a couple of months ago. But today my phone died with more than 50% of battery remaining in the middle of the day. Is anyone else experiencing the same problem after the recent update?
So I just finished chatting with Google support person and asked them to raise a bug for this but they insist that I keep my phone in safe mode for at least a day and do a factory data reset before escalating this issue.
Here's the email that I got:
Hi sleekstrike,
Thank you for contacting Google Support Team.
As per our chat conversation, I'm sending you this followup email. Most phone and tablet batteries will drain quickly as the device is used more often or more intensively. If you feel your battery is draining too quickly, we need to determine if this is due to normal usage or due to a faulty battery. Below are some steps and tips that may help determine and resolve the issue.
You can also check out our Tips for making your battery last YouTube video.
Step 1: Restart your device.
Restarting your phone will clear temporary files and may resolve any app-related issues.
Hold the Power button until a menu appears prompting you to power down the device. When the device powers off completely, press and hold the Power button until your device powers on again. Step 2: Check for system updates for your device.
Downloading and installing system updates for your device can help prevent and resolve issues with your device.
Go to "Settings" > scroll down to "System" > touch About phone (or tablet) > touch System updates. If a system update is available, download it. Step 3: Check for apps updates on the Play Store.
Downloading and installing available app updates will ensure that the app is working as intended, which includes fixes for bugs and issues on previous versions.
Open the Google Play Store app. Touch the Play Store icon > touch My Apps to view your downloaded apps. Apps with available updates are labeled "Update." It's recommended that you select Update All, but you can individually choose which apps you want to update. Step 4: Settings adjustments and other actions.
a) Use the Recent Apps button to close unused apps that may still be running.
The Recent Apps button is the third touch button at the bottom of your device that looks like two rectangles on top of each other. When you touch the Recent Apps button, you can swipe left or right on an app to dismiss it. Some Android users are not aware that apps on the Recent Apps list are running in the background and may be contributing to memory and battery consumption. b) Temporarily turn off features not in use.
Location services and GPS: Settings > Location access > Turn off access to your location. Bluetooth: Settings > Wireless & networks > Slide the Bluetooth switch to Off. c) Use Airplane mode in low/no coverage areas if you cannot use or don't plan to use data over your mobile network.
Settings > Wireless & networks > More… > select Airplane mode. Although mobile network connection is disabled in airplane mode, Wi-Fi can be re-enabled: Settings > Wireless & networks > Slide the Wi-Fi switch to On. d) Enable auto brightness.
Settings > Display > Brightness > select Auto e) Reduce the delay before the screen goes to sleep. The screen is often the biggest drain on the battery, and this step will reduce drain when the screen is not in use.
Settings > Display > Sleep > Set small time frame (such as 1 min or less) f) Minimize use of graphic or memory intensive apps when you need to conserve battery. This could include video streaming, gaming, or camera use.
g) If you know you are going to use intensive features more than usual, such as when traveling, plan in advance.
Plug in your charge cable while using GPS navigation in your car, if able. Carry around your USB cable and plug into USB ports to charge, if able. Bring a backup battery for your device when taking many photos and videos, if possible. h) Disable application notifications from apps that are giving you unwanted or too many notifications.
Settings > Apps > touch the specific app > uncheck Show notifications Touch the Back button (curved arrow toward the bottom left of the screen) and repeat as necessary for other apps. i) If you're using a tablet and have multiple user profiles, switch to unused profiles and (similar to step a) use the Recent Apps button to close all the apps open on that profile.
Alternatively, you can delete unused tablet user profiles: Settings > Users > touch the trash can to the right of the profile you wish to delete. The main user profile can't be deleted. If your battery still drains unusually fast after going through all the above basic steps, try Steps 5-7 below.
Step 5: Use the Battery settings.
Visit our Manage battery life help article. Check battery level & usage details of your device to determine if any unused features or third-party installed apps are draining the battery quickly. Step 6: Enable safe mode on your device.
In safe mode, all third-party applications will be disabled. This can help pinpoint issues caused by third-party installed apps. To restart your device in safe mode:
Ensure your device's screen is on, then press & hold the Power button. Touch & hold the Power off option in the dialog box. Touch OK in the following dialog to start safe mode. To exit safe mode, turn your device off and on again. It's recommended that you try safe mode for a few hours or up to a full day, if able. If your battery continues to drain abnormally quickly while in safe mode, try Step 7 below.
Step 7: Reset your device to factory settings.
If your device continues to drain quickly, resetting the device to factory settings may resolve the issue. Resetting your device to factory settings will erase all local data on your device. Backup of your personal local data (pictures, music and video files) is recommended.
To backup personal data on your device To reset your device to factory settings After resetting your device to factory settings, continue to use your device normally to determine if your battery issue is resolved.
If your battery issue was resolved during these steps, great! You can help other customers with similar battery issues if you reply to this email to let us know which step best resolved your battery issue.
If your issue was not resolved and your battery still drains abnormally fast, call us or reply to this email and reference that you already went through all of our Battery Drain troubleshooting steps.

This is their initial steps they want you to try before they do anything. If you bought the phone through the google store they will replace it even if it's out of warranty. At least they did for me. All I had to do was call them back and tell them I followed these steps and the issue was still happening.

It's not the update- It's your battery getting worse. Keep working with Google until they send you a replacement, back up all your data, and transfer it to your replacement phone when it arrives. In order to simplify restoring to the new phone disable password/pin/fingerprint first before making a backup on your current phone. Good luck.

Notifications not being pushed since update to Android Pie

Is anyone else having this problem? A few apps – Gmail and WhatsApp that I've noticed so far – will occasionally *fetch* notifications, but otherwise I don't receive notifications until I open the relevant application. I've tried going into settings --> developer options --> standby apps, but plenty of apps are set to 'active' and it doesn't make any difference. I don't particularly want to do a factory reset, so does anyone have any alternative suggestions?
Adaptive battery - off.
Battery optimization - off on every affected apps.
Maybe look at data saving mode or something.
Check notification importance on those apps.
Clear cache (or even data if it's not causing too much trouble) from affected apps.
If those 5 options do not help, factory reset is probably the way. Or maybe I missed something.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I've tried all those things Adaptive battery keeps switching itself back on, but even so, I think I managed to keep it deactivated for long enough to establish it wasn't making any difference. Very irritating. Thanks for the reply though!
