Exynos variant posts both better performance AND battery life? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Guides, News, & Discussion

So, Ars Technica just published its review of the Galaxy S7, which goes super in-depth. And in it, some things aren't surprising: the intl 8890 spanks the US 820 models, but here's the one that's surprising.
Not surprising
Rather surprising
Very surprising
So not only does the Exynos have noticeably better benchmark performance, it also lasts longer on a charge. And while the E8890 was tested in the UK labs, while the US labs tested the S820 version, the difference should not be that big. And with the early reports of the S820's GPU being noticeably better than the E8890's proven wrong in that same review (it is slightly better, but with differences of only 1 or 2 fps), it begs the question why Samsung didn't go all Exynos again, especially since it home-grows these chips, it theoretically should be cheaper for them to just use these. I know Samsung has a partnership or something with Qualcomm, but when your product is better than theirs in every way, doesn't it just make more sense to go with the better one?

I'm happy Australia gets exynos

sigh. typical.

The thing is, and always seems to be, that a quick search on Google for Snapdragon VS Exynos S7 performance shows plenty of legitimate tests that swing either way in favor of one or the other depending on which test(s) you believe. The above illustrated (in the OP) is just one of the tests. Many will show results in favor of the Snapdragon. Generally speaking, the pattern seems to support the Exynos being slightly better at intense gaming while the Snapdragon seems to be slightly better at day-to-day tasks.
That being said, I think it's ridiculous to split hairs when it comes to slight performance differences that 99.5% of most users will never notice. It's not a topic worth arguing about (though many still will). It just comes down to whose test do you want to believe over the next guys. Debating such small differences can be fun, but it won't make one variety of S7 any better than the other at the end of the day.
Here is just one of the many examples that show results a bit different than in the OP:
http://www.ibtimes.com/samsung-galaxy-s7s-snapdragon-820-vs-exynos-8890-preliminary-showdown-2334571
Again, for every site that shows one shine above the other there is another site that will show it differently. Either way, either processor, the S7 is a great phone (if your not a developer in the US).

Real world use there is no difference
Would love the exynos version

Performance: Similar
Batterylife: Exynos way ahead
It's obvious after reading the battery life threads, Exynos version is much better.

It's not a totally fair fight, S7 always has slight edge over S7 edge. I don't have any theory to support this, but I've read a lot of S7/edge benchmark and S7 always have 300->1k point higher than S7 edge
Still, 6 or 7 second lower in some game loading is a noticeable margin. Also, in this video, he only tested app loading time so it's not the end of the story. He said that he's gonna upload a new video about real FPS performance then, we shall see if Snapdragon can make a come back.
And one reason why Samsung use Snapdragon variant in US is due to LTE network spec that only Snapdragon chip support or sth. Also can't remember where I read that )

I have no clue what he is saying in that clip, is he running an SD-card on either phone and do he have any apps moved to those SD-cards?

He didn't say anything about that. He just install 20 same games and apps on both devices, and then use same 3G network carrier (which is Mobifone - Vietnam) and then speed test their loading time. I don't think he used SD card at all. Most of the time he just said that he though Snapdragon version should be faster but apparently it's not. Also, some app, like Dictionary and Chicken invader, the S7 Exynos doesn't restart the app, just normal resume, while S7 Edge SD820 need to restart the app. That's all about it.

wow, sd820 performance in that video is horrible.

You should ask that in the S7 Help section rather than take this thread off-topic.

That is literally one of the worst attempts at a comparison video I have ever watched (partially watched anyway). If people are going to do real world tests...they need to do them correctly.

Must hurt to see the device you own doing crappy and so very easy to throw out "O thats not a valid comparison".
Have you been under a rock ? Many many many have reported, lag, heat, jittery slo mo, crappy battery life, crappy audio for the subpar built in Qualcomm DAC. with the SD820 S7 implementation.

Sounds like you're losing sleep over it. I couldn't resist.

Exynos-powered Galaxy S7 appears to be faster than its Snapdragon 820 counterpart
If you take the two side-by-side comparisons uploaded to YouTube into account, it appears that the Exynos 8890 variant of the Galaxy S7 is actually significantly more powerful than the Snapdragon 820-driven Galaxy S7. Not only does this model boot and open applications faster but it also renders video at a significantly faster rate.

Side by side cool, but in real world use there is no difference. The exynos has better battery life

Are you 5 years old? Comparing a foriegn S7 against an American S7 Edge...knowing the Edge has more things running in the background due to "Edge" specific functions, as well as the modem limitations in a foriegn land and that is a good comparison?
Go troll elsewhere.

Why are you so salty?
The thing is both devices are Int versions (G9350 and G930F), so your argument about "modem limitation" is not valid.
And about the edge features, here is the evidence that it is negligible.

Battery life.. Expected, was never gonna be better than the S5. I use a 6 Plus right now and dunno if I can go backwards on battery life but so want the Edge.
On the other hand it looks good when you consider the display resolution and smaller battery.

I don't know, looks like the review is rushed TBF.
Display brightness shows lower compared to S5, when we know that S6 has higher brightness than S5. It has already been found by Displaymate, and also hi-tech.mail.ru did display analysis. Even Samsung mentioned this, so no way I can believe that they found S5 to have higher brightness.
GSMArena mentions better speakers in S5, which is complete nuts.
That review seems botched, I don't think their testing methodology is particularly accurate either. The S6 using similar firmware and a more energy efficient display should have achieved similar or better results as well. Either way, if this is a legitimate problem, we can see Samsung seeding an expedited "emergency" firmware patch.

Yeah I don't trust this review either. Need to hear from others. I am pretty sure the S6 speaker is much louder than the S5
The review mentioned no removable battery and no SD card like 7 times lol it felt a little tainted to be honest.
I feel like that review was written before they even got their hands on the S6. They mentioned the lack of removable storage like 18 times and all the factual information presented by Samsung at the release of the S6, they seemed to find the opposite result.
Bring on Annandtech's Review!
Sent from my SM-G900W8 using Tapatalk
It was a rather odd review for them with constantly repeated points and some of the testing seemed strange or rather a bit off. Certainly not one of their better reviews. Interesting they just reduced the Edge to a small note at the end, as it sounds like they might not do a separate review for it.
Agreed, poor review from GSM Arena.
I've begun to doubt the quality of their reviews recently and this review was just about the worst I've read yet.
It seemed to have a very negative slant, its as if they thought the readers would hate it because of the lack of microsd/not easily removal battery and wanted to side with them preemptively but didn't focus too much on the benefits those changes bring e.g. quite a bit slimmer than GS5, ultra fast storage speed, more storage size options.
As others have pointed out the camera review was also a bit lax, particular in regards to low light which is meant to be the main point of improvement over the GN4 camera.
As others in this thread have mentioned. Something is very wrong with parts of this review and that's not just being hopeful as someone who has a pre-order in for this phone.
Speaker volume, Screen brightness, Battery life. All seem very wrong.
They are saying that compared to the S5:
Not even 1 hour less each Web browsing and Video playback
But 10 hours less talk time?? That just doesn't add up.
They are saying close to S4 numbers for battery. That just can't be..
Yes, the S4 has a 2600mah battery close to the S6 but tech has come quite a long way since then and everything should be more efficient than that.
My guess. This is a buggy (I will mostly blame Google and their totally botched Lollipop, but some Samsung tweaks may be needed too) early device that should not have been reviewed as retail.
That might explain battery life but that still leaves speaker sound and screen brightness. Doesn't make sense.

For those who didn't like GSMArena's Review, what I'm going to say is, don't raise your expectations for AnandTech's one, especially on battery life, in fact, those of you getting the S6 I say prepare to forever defend the S6 battery life, I foresee many threads WRT Screen On Time and a flood of complaints. AnandTech did mention in the Note 4 Exynos 5433 review that despite the new architecture the 5433 was quite an aggressive CPU and the same may now be true for the 7420 despite 14nm.
With a tiny 2550mAh battery and QHD display there is only so much the 14nm Exynos7420 can do to save energy, put that together with Lollipop which isn't as efficient as Google claimed, and you end up with the sort of battery results GSMArena got.
Don't hold your hopes up for AnandTech, they will be brutaly honest (I love that about them), take note how much GSMArena candy coated the GS6 Review, its an absolute cause for concern, IMO.

Few repeated things gets mentioned time and again. It has been proven multiple times that QHD is not a concern for batterylife, yet every 17sec we see someone complaining about QHD and batterylife. I am sure if you would have followed the discussion you will find ample amount of posts explaining AMOLED QHD power consumption from various reliable sources.
As for Exynos 5433, it's not same as 7420. That should be obvious to everyone. That uses more than a year old GTS scheduler as mentioned by Andrei. And it was obvious that the software stack needed to be optimized on the 5433 to make it more efficient. heck, that SOC is even running on 32-bit even though it's capable to run on 64-bit. That's just lazy or some deliberate policy from Samsung. And it might be because it wasn't sold in many countries, even the Gear VR doesn't work on Exynos Note 4 (not atleast couple of months back).
Comparing 5433 vs 7420 is doing apples vs orange. Totally different motivation and stakes are much much higher for 7420.
There is no reason to conclude anything on 7420 based on 5433. They are different SOCs, and the motivation to optimize 7420 is much much higher than 5433.

I own a Note 4, I know how efficient QHD SuperAMOLED is, I get 8hours SOT daily, you don't have to tell me how efficient it is.
The efficiency of SuperAMOLED and a 14nm cannot do much though when the phone has a QHD display coupled with a tiny battery. THE VERY LEAST Samsung could have done is keep the 2800mAh battery of the S5, the S6 would have had incredible battery results with that battery, dropping battery size by 200mAh or more while throwing in more spec is going to cancel out the new super efficient CPU and screen.
I would love to see how the S6 manages when running Google Chrome for long periods, that browser will do a number on that puny 2550mAh battery, regardless of how efficient the CPU and screen are.

Exynos or Snapdragon

I'd probably sooner have Snapdragon if I was given the choice, although nowhere near as much as yourself it would seem.
As I've touched on in other threads, the only real reason to want Snapdragon is for Vanilla and CM roms. Well, why bother buying a premium phone with numerous features that require Samsung's framework if you're going to put a third party rom on it? No, I'll be sticking with TW anyway and that doesn't bother me after it's vast improvement in recent years. I've read the 820 Snapdragon on single core performance is better than the Exynos 8, and the GPU is marginally faster too. Woo, that means I'll miss out on a couple of hundred points in a benchmark test. But in real life, the difference will equate to the square root of zero so I won't lose any sleep.
The only concern I have is the heat these things run at. Will the Exynos run hotter than the Snapdragon performing the same tasks? That will bother me, even if the speed is effectively the same. We will need to wait and see, but I've heard nothing about that being the case and the Snapdragon 810 was known to be a melting pot in more ways than one. Perhaps they haven't completely overcome that and the Exynos will still be the better SOC in that respect anyway.
In short, I'm getting the Exynos, but I'm not concerned about that.

So is the Exynos.
My concern is ROM development, which one will get attention more ?
Snapdragon, as it's an open source SOC. But in terms of stock development (debloating and the likes) there will probably be little to choose between them.
Same problem here. Only Exynos-version available. After 2 years we won't receive any updates and aosp or cm based ROMs won't be available...

Won't receive updates?
Like the S4 or S3 or the S5 in the near future, these phones only get major updates for the first 2 years. The S4 didn't even receive Android 5.1 released in early 2015! Android 6 will probably be the last update for the S5 released in 2014.
But well: No problem. Snapdragon Chipset. Cyanogenmod 13 with Android 6 works better than any other Touchwiz based ROM before.
But what about Exynos-based S6 and S7? Very unlikely these will receive any third party support. End of life after only two years.
I've already covered my opinion on that, it makes no sense to buy a phone like this and put CM or AOSP on it. It defeats the object of paying the premium as you will lose out on the features that require Samsung's framework. Of course, people can do what they want with their own phone, but it makes no sense to me.
As for the updates that is what XDA is here for. For example, do you think the S6 won't get Android N even if Samsung don't release it for it? Of course it will, despite being based on Exynos. It just won't be through official means.
I've seen benchmarks there you actually see very good singel core performance from the new Exynos. I think it's a powerhouse both CPU and GPU, and TW have become much better. With a launcher and a couple of small tweaks there is really no need for vanilla Android. Rooted TW with some flashed goodies will do good for me. It also takes time to get a custom CM rom working well on the phone like the camera etc so I would like to enjoy this phone fully from release. The camera is just a beast.

Heat shouldn't be a problem, the s7 (edge) comes with some type of water cooling system like they have in gaming PCs.
As for me, I would choose Snapdragon because of the development, aosp, cm, tw all in one. I believe Exynos is closed source.
I'm aware it comes with a heat spreader, but given the size, I'm unsure how effective it will be. Hopefully very.
Exynos for me if i wanted cm i would buy nexus. As mentioned above tw has been getting better im running note 4 exynos 5.1.1 and it flies. Being nearly 2 years old i can only imagine the s7 edge performance for todays phones
It's also worth pointing out that one of the primary reasons to buy this phone is the camera. Well, if you put non-stock on it then you will never get the quality it's capable of.
@Beefheart, I don't want to start a heated debate here, but for me at least, it seems logical that people want the S820 variant because of the presumably better support from the development community. Touchwiz sucks in speed, no matter how you put it. I used many phones in the last year, including the Note5 and even if it's faster than previous Samsung devices, lag is still there : in multitasking, when launching various apps, etc. And you see it especially when compared with same generation phones that come with weaker hardware but (much) better optimized software : oneplus2, meizu pro5, even LG G4 which has similar "heavy" software on it. So I think it's logical to want a CM or AOSP rom on your S7 if you want your phone to have the speed and even some extra-customization. Because of the screen quality, battery, even camera (I know, Samsung camera app will always be better than on the CM, but I believe it will be bearable even on a non-Touchwiz ROM).
Just my 2 cents.
s7 edge in asia region will get snapdragon?

I don't believe anyone wants a heated debate, this is a forum and an expressing of opinions.
Touchwiz doesn't suck in speed, or at least not in recent models. There have still been a few issues, like the savagery of it's memory management, but from what I have read on this forum in the last few days that is far less of an issue on the S7. Touchwiz is now a very good OS regardless of what way you look at it, especially on powerful devices with a lot of RAM. Or 4gb in the case of the S7. I think a lot of people still judge it on the piece of s**t it was on the S2/S3 and to a lesser extent, the S4. But it's inevitable when something has a terrible rep it will take time to fix.
I simply find it a little strange that a fan of vanilla Android who doesn't like Touchwiz would buy a premium Samsung flagship device only to remove the very thing which provides most of the features that make it a premium flagship device in the first place. Especially given the numerous other options on the market which are more suitable. As someone said earlier, if they wanted CM or AOSP, they'd have bought a Nexus.
But to go back to the architecture, I myself would take the 820 over the Exynos if given a straight choice, I've already said that.

I always thought Android was about freedom. And you just can't say to anyone who wants a stripped down UI and a nice phone on the same time, to just go and buy a Nexus. First of all, the Nexus 6p is an ugly phone (subjective, I know...). Second, it's a big phone, which might be too much for some. Having had all the Samsung Note phones (and much of the S series) I can't find something really interesting in Touchwiz, something I can't live without or something I can't also have on CM. Maybe besides the camera app. I used the Note4 for more than half a year and most of the time it was with CM on it which was running great, miles ahead of TW regarding the speed and multitasking functionality. Of course, I can't talk about the S7, there are very few who have the device at this moment, but given my past experiences with TW (Note5 included) I'm not very optimistic.
I'm not telling anyone to buy or not buy anything. I'm saying that in my opinion it makes no sense to pay a premium for a phone only to remove the features that made it premium in the first place. But if people want to spend £650 (or the equivalent via a network contract) to do that they're more than entitled to do that and it's obviously their money. But I'm going around in circles here so I'll bow out.

S8+ vs S8 Noticeable Performance Discrepancy

Hello everyone, I recently purchased and S8 (Non + variant, I prefer the smaller size)
I have seen a lot of youtube videos demonstrating it's ability to emulate GameCube games at *near* Full speed.
When attempting to do so on my device I failed miserably, getting only about 15 FPS or less in some titles.
Before anyone even asks I do NOT have the Exynos variant.
My S8 was purchased in Canada and has the North American Snapdragon 835 SoC.
I was convinced this was simply an issue of getting the right settings so i tinkered endlessly trying to find the secret option that doubled performance until I eventually gave up.
My sister visited recently with an S8+ and i figured I might as well give it a shot on her device. Using the EXACT same version of Dolphin (Build 3418) and the EXACT same settings. (Compared the settings one by one to make sure they were Identical) with the ram cleared in both phones and performance mode turned on.
The S8+ DOUBLED the performance of the regular S8 and emulated any game I tried perfectly whereas my phone could barely keep up.
I have such a small sample that I'm not sure if this is an issue with MY S8 or S8's in general. I would GREATLY appreciate your help. If you have an S8 could you please post a video of it emulating at or near full speed? If you have access to an S8 and S8+ can you please compare performance and tell me the results? I will be posting a video tomorrow to demonstrate these differences.
If the performance discrepancy is as big as it appears, I may have to return my regular S8 and get the S8+. I really hope it doesn't come to this because I much prefer the smaller size. But I am not willing to sacrifice 50% of the performance during emulation.
Run some other benchmarks and compare the two, otherwise wipe the phone and start fresh, it doesn't make sense.

I agree, it doesn't make sense whatsoever. I will run Antutu and see if my phone is scoring lower than average.
Considering the S8 and S8+ Allegedly run identical hardware. Performance should be the same or at the very least within the margin of error.

I have seen the opposite of this. My S8 preforms better than my friends S8+
Is your sister's S8+ Exynos or Snapdragon though?
Its becouse trotteling and heat up the core. The s8+ have more cooling
I assume the resolution was set the same, both WQHD+ or both FHD+?

Exynos is NOT faster than SnapDragon.. sorry..

it's all a matter of opinion. I've ran circles around an s8+ exynos.. not sure where people are seeing this so dramatic an increase. it's barely anything that will keep up with this chip except maybe the new one..
Here I've pulled a basically idle SnapDragon from cpu info.. I challenge anyone to PLEASE post one that even remotely and FACTUALY supports this obvious absurdity...

I was actually a Snapdragon user always. And that's the first time i use exynos.
But history shows that exynos is better in the long run. Battery wise it is also better. And i see it now.
Your post hardly makes sense. I don't understand what point you are trying to make
My exynos s8 doesn't need to strain my as much at idle as yours does though

Omg its so slow, only 300mhz?!? Something must be wrong...
Why do some people make it out to be some sort of competition ?

I know right? I tried underclocking it but that just made it worse. I tried putting it in my car and driving really fast cause maybe it just needed to physically move fast, but I just got a speeding ticket. I submitted a ticket to Samsung but they just told me to by an S9+. I'm at a loss here.

Because e-peen is the most important thing in the world ok? So the real question here is why aren't you contributing to the competition??
no one claims exynos is faster they are on-par with each other. otherwise they would have sold these phones as different models. However, I believe if they were not forced to Samsung would sell exynos galaxy's to USA as well. exynos is a beter chipset for galaxy devices because its designed by samsung. snapdragon 835 etc is a generic SoC.

Positivity For the 990

Whilst I am NOT defending Samsung and believe there is much to be improved, I do have the Mi 10 Pro with the Snapdragon 865 for a reference point. The Mi 10 Pro as you will be aware runs at 90hz and for me and my observations battery life is comparable and I'm running the ultra at 120hz.
As for performance & heat issues I decided to play an hour of PubG on the Ultra and another hour on the Mi 10 and again maybe slightly more heat on the Exynos but nothing to worry me personally. I can't say I noticed a difference in Gameplay but didn't run side by side or done a FPS count, that aspect I guess the 865 would lead, but I didn't have any issues on the Ultra in terms of playability.
I do recommend Samsung take notice and use ARM architecture on the Exynos 1000, and hope that this will resolve the complaints.
Maybe I got lucky with my chip, but honestly I can't complain as I'm not experiencing the issues that seem to plauge others.
Just showing and sharing my experience whist not defending the 990 entirely......:good:

Aswell as i.Same i didn't notice any issue.
Me too i don't deffend Samsung. But it is cruical that customer don't have any issues.
Put in side fps variation in games or better score in antutu it just isn't necessery for regular customer. He will not notice it.
I played games, record 4k 60fp 8k videos absolutley everyting also played games on charger because i wanted to know it there is any issue with thermal throtling or anything else.
And for camera with every update is better as well as battery life.I'm satisfied with my S20 Ultra Exynosm Brutal camera btw and brutal zoom
This is mine opinion after almost month with my phone.
Edit:
Also i updated myself camera app from 10.0.02.7 to 10.0.03.4 and its superfast shuter and auto focus.Overall its much much better.

Yeah I get the argument between performance of the 865 vs 990 and same price point. All I am saying is that I have seen threads saying the Cameras are Garbage, they really aren't, but yes should be better (Autofocus) which has improved for me.
The phone heats up, well I play long sessions of PubG and haven't noticed anything erratic.
I'm not debating the 990, I would also prefer the 865, but I'm most certainly not experiencing ALL of the aforementioned complaints in regards to this SOC.

I forgot something.Last year i had S10 plus exynos.Battery was garbage so i traded it for snapdragon version. It was better. But after fev weeks battery on exynos improved as well. And i notice that internet on my snap is slow.(Sim internet)And i tested it my friend he has galaxy s8 exynos and my s10 plus snap.We opened ookla test he got about 80mb/s i got about 25.we are on same carrier.I tryed couple of times again and i didn't got anytime above 30 so.for everyone that eant snap keep in mind this.Lower badwith as well as singal reception because we are in Europe which uses diffrent signal. One are on GSM another on CDMA.

Don't have a device with SD to compare....all those issue that are mentioned i see on Youtube or read on various pages ... those 20% better in performance that are displayed on various benchmark tests in favor of SD processors i don't even notice in everyday use ... such tests mean nothing to me .... still my device with exynos that i use is super fast in any sense, smooth, etc....

There's a custom recovery now. Soon we'll see custom roms and kernels and both should improve performance/battery life for the exynos. Some, if not all SD will be stuck with Samsung updates forever..
Is there a way to install system apks like camera unrooted?
Personally i play pubg like 3 to 4 hours on one single time with my friends, framerates never drops and the phone is not hot like burning hot, its hot but normal.. as a référence i have thé iphone 11pro max heats more than my phone actually so i think its good..
Guys with positive feedback about exynos, where do you live? I live in Saudi and currently it's the best weather we had this year, and room temperature is 24°and my phone get warm during casual tasks and heats up really bad and drop frames while gaming (all of this while I'm on Wi-Fi), when I turn LTE it is much worse and much warmer, when I turn 5G it stay up for few minutes then heat up then fall back to 4G (I have excellent 5G and 4G signal)

I'm so tired of people falsely claiming exynos is fine in gaming.
You can see a lot of video proofs on YouTube that exynos is trash for gaming and there's no way it can maintain 60fps in pubg mobile for extended playing sessions
If you can't tell the difference between stable 60fps and frequent drop to 40fps it's your problem, don't say it's fine.
At this point I really want someone show me a video proof of exynos running pubg mobile at 60fps for 1 hour. Then I can shut my fxxk up. But until now I see none.

Same. The pro max also reduces brightness by 50%
Tbh, the s series is not a gaming phone. Get a gaming phone for gaming.
There is more to life than gaming. There is no perfect phones out there. Each has its unique qualities.
Gaming phones don't take photo well.
To this date samsung phones, at least s and note series is a well balanced phone. Not the best on gaming, photos, ui.. But it's well balanced and do each rather well.
Not to mention the dual messenger and excellent audio it can reproduce.. If you have a decent headset. The adaptive sound is perfect when tuned using the headset of your choice and I have several.. And a profile set for each device. When i change i change the profile.

When I was in saudi, yanbu, the phone is hot as heck probably due to the constant search for better network.
Was in mobifly or mobily or something like that.
