Hi, I'm currently thinking about popping an SDcard in my xplay and was wondering how fast the slot runs at?
I was thinking maybe I will be wasting my money getting the fastest card on the block if the slot speed is slower than the SD card.
Also am curious in the difference in speed of the internal memory compared to the fastest speed of the sd card.
If anyone has any info on the above would be grateful for your input.

I've just borrowed an SDcard out of another phone (Samsung evo (yellow)) and benchmarked against the internal SD card and got the following scores:
External - (read) 34.36MB/s, (write) 20.0MB/s
Internal - (read) 89.76MB/s, (write) 53.35MB/s
Has anyone found an SDcard that is as fast as the internal?

I don't think there are sdcards available with the same read/write speeds as internal. On my old moto g with LP ROM I always installed big games to my sdcard using apps2sd and the only difference i noticed was that it takes a little longer loading an app.

I was just looking at the benchmark results database for the "a1 SD benchmark" app and there are a few submissions that encourage me to think it may be possible with a card like the Samsung Pro series which can do around 80r/70w MB/s. Only thing that has me wondering is whether the card interface would be a bottleneck?

It also depends on the phone I guess as to how much speeds it can reach.

Not neutered - All SD card interfaces are slower than the actual memory built in to the phone, this is right across the board for all phones. It's a known bottle neck that's a fact of life. That is the biggest thing in favour of more memory in the actual phone. I'm not a gamer but I have a ton of apps installed on the SD card and don't find any negative impact on day to day use. That said if I could have bought a 32 or 64GB version of the Play I would have instead of the 16GB version.
Your never going to see the tested speed in the phone equal the SD card out of the phone.

Howdy, I tried to film the aftermath of the bizarre weather we've been having here in Scotland yesterday, but I noticed that when I played it back, even converted it to an HD Avi and ran it through VirtualDub that at certain points the video lags and freezes, the sounds remains the same but the picture will pause for a second. I'm assuming (based on some research on Google and here) that it's because the memory card I'm using was the basic Class 2 that was shipped with the phone. Assuming I buy a Class 6 or that, the card will be fast enough to write HD video to it? I'm just wondering if any of you have had these problems, and/or does a higher class SD card fix it? (before I buy one!). Or, is it for a separate reason on the Desire Z that the video is jerky? Thanks! Below is my video should you want to see an example!

Yes the class can have a massive impact on HD recording on this phone (and others), get a class 6 and you should soon see the differences.

Thank you, I shall, I just wanted to make sure! On a side note, if I change my memory card does Android get confused because of how it "deals" with the SD Card? (I'm coming from five years of Windows Mobile & I know they had no issues with SD Cards being swapped) but I noticed Android "Prepares The SD Card" whenever you unmount it or that.. Is it a straight forward swap and everything's working or is it a hassle of reinstalling certain things? Thanks!

Mine even stops recording after 13 seconds or so. Also have an older 16GB Class 2 card. I'm also getting a good Class 6 one.
Regarding files on the sdcard: Just copy everything from your old card to the new one. If you are using linux, be sure to also copy the hidden directories

I have a 16Gb Class 6 card and have noticed the same thing with my HD video recordings being choppy.
I attributed it to other things going on such as data downloading or the system splitting resources to keep other balls in the air at the same time.
I can live with it, but would like it to be better as well.
I don't think the Class 6 card will make a difference for you, but it can't hurt either.
As to switching microSD cards, there's no issue with that. I don't know what happens behind the scenes when it's 'preparing the SD card' but the only issue I had was on the G1 when I was using apps2sd and have all of my apps on the ext3 partition.
I use a couple of different microSD cards regularly, no issues with swapping.

I'm using a 8GB Class4 card, same situation.
I tried to disable Live Wallpaper, put the phone in Flight Mode, close all user background program, overclocked to 1.4GHz. still lags.
If you change to the resolution just below the HD level then the videos record smoothly even on my 8gb class 2 card.
Does formatting the SD card with a different allocation unit size increase performance? Can anybody with a spare mini SD card test this -- the higher the size the better the performance (but more space gets eaten up by small files). The general idea with this is if the aus is small it conserves file space but you get slower read/writes -- if the aus is higher you get faster read/write but files take up more space.
I wonder if there is a good alternative video recording app that would handle the recording better...?

For info i had bought a Kingmax class10 8gb, to swap with the supplied one but
after a 10 hours use of my desireZ, i had a message "sd card is read only"(corrupted files on it, in fact), at that time i used only googlenavigation/Layar/whatsApp as software "using Sdcard" and took 2 or 3 pictures with the camera for testing.

I got a 2GB SD CARD FROM SAMSUNG.
I have another LOCAL SD CARD 4GB
My question is will the SPEED Remain same to transfer or access data from both these SD CARDS.
I mean to say is will the LOCAL SD CARD BE SLOWER(since its not samsung branded) IN ACCESSING AND RETRIEVING DATA which will eventually slow down my phone or something like that.

i have noticed that when i changed sd card from samsung original (came with phone) to new transcend 8gb sd card, phone is now booting for 5 minutes....
It being a samsung card doesn't make the card more "compatible" with a samsung phone. A card is defined by the card, not by the brand.

yeah so it means that performance has degraded right.
Also i think booting is not much worry as its done from ROM
so apart from booting what else is buggy or degrading performance,comparing both 2 GB and 8 GB
its on a card to card basis, if it is slower for him it doesnt mean it will be slower for you.
You should use a Class 6 SD card. Slower cards are not adequate.

You can use a class 6 SD card, however, i do not think the phone is capable of handling such high speed cards, and thus the read/write speed of the phone will limit the speed.
Conclusively i don't think there will be an increase in performance!
With black friday coming up, I'm looking for a large micro SD card. My main debate is through speed. I want the 128GB Sandisk microSD card, but it's capped to 30MB/s sequential reads, while the 64GB extreme goes up to 80MB/s. Can the tablet take advantage of those higher speeds? I want as little a difference between the internal memory and the external memory as possible. My only concern is 64GB may not be enough, as I download a metric ton of games, and I'm blowing through the internal memory. Basically, I'm asking for buying advice, and this is all very specific to the shield tablet. I have no other intended uses for the SD card.

There's a new version of the 128gb that rated 48mb/s. But if you want faster card you can only get them in 64gb. Like the Samsung pro at 90mb/s.

I'm afraid to ask how much this new 128GB model is. I can't justify spending $200 on a micro SD solely for tablet storage.

I see. But I think even at 48mp/s, it's not gonna be the same as internal. If you want something close then the Samsung Pro 64gb with 90mb/s is your best bet. But you are only going to match the read speed. The internal memory's write speed is still faster by 2x. But I really doubt you're going to care about that much if you're just transferring 1-2gb of data to the sdcard. And I'm assuming these are game data? Once those are transferred, it's pretty much done with. Even with my 64gb card now with 11.73 mb/s write speed is plenty fast when I move files to the card. If there are game saves that needs to write to the card, they are gonna be small data. I have about 20 game data on the SD card using Folder Mount and I don't find any issue launching them. The only one that I noticed takes longer is Half Life.

Does anyone have experience with PNY sd cards? I saw one for $110 that's a 128GB card with 40MB/s sequential read speeds. How would the card perform, ans would it be enough?
Personally I don't think the extra speed will make that big of a difference. Those benchmarks provide controlled and consistent circumstances which are not realistic. Almost nothing you do on the tablet in normal use will push the read speeds. Tbh write speeds could be more important, as they are typically much slower then write speeds. I'm not saying read speed doesn't matter, but that there is certainly a diminishing return on speeds.

What about if I simply want to use it to load up and watch videos? No gaming nothing else. Is a SanDisk 128GB microSDXC @ 30MB good enough for that? Like say, this one?

Thanks for your help guys. Ended up buying a Sandisk UHS-3 64GB card for $100. So far so good. Although android's sd card support for apps is SO BAD.
Right I have a class 10 32gb card which I'm using as internal but any apps that are on it stutter and lag, if I buy another 32gb or 64gb like sandisk U3 will it be fast enough so that my apps don't lag?

I was just about to put up my own post about this. I have a 64gb sandisk xtreme SD card. Only bought it a few weeks back for £35 I think it was. I'm having major problems. If I try deleting some stuff from the SD card using say es file explorer it takes a really long time to do it. Even deleting an empty folder it take wayyy too long. Also if I try downloading files straight to my SD card using say google drive or a torrent program it locks the phone up completely and I have to keep resetting the phone to get it to become responsive. Really annoying. If I get some spare time I will flash the stock xt1572 firmware and try it if not I will have to contact MOTO UK and try and sort it. But I'm hoping they will sort a replacement phone so I don't have to send off for repair....?

I will have to have a look but its not right. Only phone I have had problems. The LG G4 I used it on worked fine. And works fine in my Z2 Tablet. I will have to try reformat it or I'll contact MOTO I guess. Thanks

Just a note that the phone doesn't support the second row of pins for UHS-2 (U3), so you're limited to UHS-1. Of course, the card could still be fast enough to max out UHS-1, but maybe not.
You could also look at changing the I/O scheduler for the SD card in Kernel Adiutor to something more suitable for SD, and playing with the read-ahead buffer to get better performance. Noop/512kB is a good starting point.
Also, why are the apps on the SD card? Shouldn't they be on the phone? Maybe use the external storage for non-time intensive things, like photos/music?
UPDATE, speed results from Sandisk 200GB MicroSD:
Seq Read - 79.85MB/s
Seq Write - 3.87MB/s
Random Read - 5.37 MB/s, 1377 IOPS
Random Write - 0.37 MB/s, 97 IOPS
SQLite Insert - 1192 TPS
SQLite Update - 664 TPS
Not the fastest card, but good enough for mass storage
My general consensus is that the apps will always be better on internal storage. Even if the phone can make full use of the U3 specs, it is still slower memory. Expect issues, especially with some apps.
Would someone with an an XZ2 Premium please run a storage speed test on the Micro SD card slot? The XZ2 is apparently gimped compared to last year's XZ1. Which is a real shame.
SD speeds seem pretty bad.
Using A1 SD Bench, running the "accurate w/reboot" test, it achieved only 19.26MB/s read and 21.52MB/s write.
This was with the latest Samsung EVO 128GB U3 card capable of near 100MB/s reads and almost 90MB/s writes as tested on my PC using USB3 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XWZWYVP).

Same for me, I also checked my EVO Plus U3 Card on my PC and it was fine, so there does seem to be an issue, the internal memory speed is insanely fast

There's an issue, alright. The issue is that they implemented a pathetic SD card subsystem in an expensive, super-premium phone. It's no wonder that it took so long to generate thumbnails for the photos I transferred over - the SD card read speed (and write speed) is thoroughly gimped.
