Performance test Mate 8 VS S7 Edge - Mate 8 General

Great video. Mate 8 is a beast

Yes! Absolutely a beast with great battery

i expected as much based on the geekbench scores thus far, the s7 edge top multi score is only 2.5% above the top mate 8 score, so yeah, in everyday operation they should be operating exactly on par!
very nice comparison video indeed, what i find intereeting is the insanely high contrast of the s7 edge display, compared to that the mate 8 display looks almost washed out *lol* and thats crazy considering how brilliant it actually already is imho!

Huh look at this:

Just returned my s7 edge. Screen was too small and the curved edges have an annoying blue hue when looking at it from the front. Battery was really bad in comparison to my mate 8 so gonna stick with this beauty. Camera was very very good though.
The gear vr was really good but just not enough to warrant keeping it.

dont worry mate 8 screen is great

Lol read the comments in the videos, so much butthurt from Samsung fanboys. They're the iPhone users of the Android world

I have had this phone for about 24 hrs. But so far it is the best phone I have ever used! It's what the nexus 6P should have been. Nothing slows it down. And the battery is insane. I have been using quite a few phones that don't have an app drawer. So I even like and am using the stock launcher. I downloaded the stuff needed to unlock and flash a rom. But I think I will just use it stock. Great phone!

In the video, the blacks on the S7 edge look really deep and on Mate 8 it's just ok, which was expected as S7 Edge has an amoled dosplay. However the whites on the S7 Edge look also much more clearer brighter and accurate compared to Mate 8, which isn't white enough. And colours and contrast overall look much better on the S7 Edge. I want to buy a Mate 8, I hope the difference in the display quality isn't as pronounced as it seems in the video. For me a gorgeous display is just as much or more important that the speed and performance.
I am looking for feedback from folks that have held both the devices up close.

I've owned both and trust me the s7 edge just can't compete. The screen on the edge is nothing special. The edge itself causes a blue/green hue down either side and made me feel nauseas. Its ALOT smaller, it felt tiny in comparison.
I have never stuck to an older phone when new stuff comes out. That was until I've had a mate 8. The battery life on this is much much better than anything else I've used.

S7 Edge has much better camera than Mate, but that's really it. Everything else is better in Mate. Battery life and overall usage are much better in Mate. My honest opinion.

Thank you manook and sobelixtus. I have one more question though. I have a Mate 7, and am pretty happy with it. Is the display on the Mate 8 significantly superior to the one on Mate 7? I guess it is, because the display on Samsung Note 5 is so much more punchier compared to the Mate 7, and I see comments here indicating Mate 8 display is just as good if not better compared to the Note 5.

I had s7 edge for a few days and decided to sell it.
S7 edge (820) version still lags, both gaming and ui. And battery life is just average. Mate 8, on the other hand, is a fast, smooth, long living beast . I don't ever regret selling my S7 edge for Mate 8.

samsung problem
not the sd820
touchwiz is crap

I have both the Mate 8 and S7 Edge (Exynos) at the moment. However my S7 Edge will most likely be returned.
Benchmarks is one thing. Real world usage another. My Mate 8 flies compared to the S7. Mate 8 is much more responsive and faster in general operation. Samsung still has its lag from time to time and generally is hesitates a lot more when doing things. Delay on things that Mate 8 does not have. Also the S7 lags in games even Monument Valley while they run perfectly smooth on my Mate 8.
You can't tell the S7 Edge has so good specs because it's bogged down with bad software.

However... observed Samsung S7 lags and delays might be partially due to its display resolution which is QHD (1440x2560 pixels) compared to Mate 8 FHD (1920x1080 pixels).
So the S7 GPU is moving/drawing 3,686,400 vs. 2,073,600 pixels, almost twice than the Mate 8 GPU.
Essentially, the point is if the QHD resolution is something worth to have or not...

Shouldn't matter, it's 4 gpu cores on the mate against 16 on the S7. It's just the way lagsung is. I've had quite a few and even if TW it's way better nowadays it's still not very optimized. Nothing can compete with stock Android/AOSP but some oem layers are just better than others. I'm my opinion HTC is best on optimization.

S6 edge vs note 4

Hi guys
My father bought an galaxy s6 edge and told me that if I wanted to have it he would change it with my note 4,I don't know what to do is the change worth it or should I keep my phone ?
My phone is rooted I won't root the s6 edge
If you are having to ask then my 1st assumption is that you do not have any use for the larger screen and SPen? So I would say yes, go ahead and swap

Not really both phone have there pros and cons the I'm not using the s-pen that much but I love the screen because I watch all my series and movies from my phone. I will probably keep my phone but another question performance is not that much different with both phones or?

A friend of mine has a S6 Edge, and it is a bit faster than the Note 4, but not by much.
Its certainly not enough to swap. His Note 4 was stolen at gunpoint during an attempted carjacking. He got the S6 Edge to try out while waiting for the Note5, but he is hating the S6 Edge battery life, he says it is rubbish compare to what his Note 4 could achieve.
Is your Note 4 lagging? If so, maybe try do a hard reset, see how you feel after that then decide.
IMO, the Note 4 is a far better allround device than the S6 Edge.

S6 is way faster to open apps and smoothness seems to be better. I suppose game will be a lot better on S6.
On the other side, S6 has a RAM managment problem and apps in background are killed agressively by the system. Battery life is also far better on the Note 4.

Thanks for both of your answers I will probably stick with my note 4. It is not laggy I'm really satisfied with it's performance. One last question it is not an important aspect for me only asking out of curiosity the camera of the s6 edge is a little bit better then the note 4 right?

Yep. Camera in the S6 Edge is a step better than the Note 4, although they both use the same IMX240 Sensor.

Night shot will be significantly better on S6 but in good light both are comparable.
Note that camera software is better on S6 with RAW support and more manual control.

Galaxy S6 Vs Nexus 6p

Hello Everyone,
i thought of purchasing a new mobile for my upcoming birthday...and i'm stumped between these two Beastly Devices..
here are my findings regarding both the phones:
Nexus 6p:
pros: Faster Update
Latest android version
USB type-c
Galaxy S6:
pros: Best Display and Very Crispy Display
Best Camera as per the reviews
Very Fast transfer rates
i'm from india and i need your suggestion regarding these two phones..both the phones are selling for the same rate in the market
Thank you
If you were comparing the Note 5 and the 6p it would be more difficult.
The bottom line here is the 6p is a much better phone, but it's much larger. If you don't care about it being larger, get the 6p. They are kind of in different classes.
A 5.1" phone vs a 5.7" phone, not a comparison at all. Compare it to the Note5.
FWIW I am selling my S6 for the 6P.
While the camera and display are nice, I can't find much else to like about it.
I hate touchwiz, strongly disklike a physical home button, touchwiz sucks, battery life is very mehh, touchwiz sucks, I could continue

Don't buy the S6. Samsung decided to go with their own memory management and it sucks harder than a black hole. It can't keep more than a few apps open at a time. Opening apps where data was previously entered and finding it all gone made me feel like I was using an iPhone 3G. It's the worst. Do you use Android Auto? The phone can barely function just trying to run the processes needed for that.

Being the first to get the latest and greatest Android updates from Google is probably reason enough to choose the nexus over the galaxy.

Mate 9 vs S8+/S8 strikes again!

I love this phone! Once again, due to our cpu and gpu, this phone ranks up there with the Snapdragon 835 and Exynos processor! Enjoy reading and the benchmarks.
I do know that benchmarks aren't everything but just enjoy this little piece. I love this phone and I am so glad I have kept it!

Unexpected. But I guess they will improve the performance with further optimisation of their system.

Went to play with it again side by side. S8 screen is better and surprisingly, the sound is much clearer on the s8. But I miss the mate camera. I took indoor pictures side by side and really, you can't see any difference.
More and more I think paying that crazy prices for Samsung or any Android phones does not make any sense especially they will drop in price so quickly

If you want great performance & battery, go Mate 9
If you want great display & feel, got Samsung S8 / S8+
I was using Samsung phones since Galaxy S1, and my always complaint was the performance, u take the device out of the box and it's super fast, after some months and installing more and more applications, it lags A LOT!
This year i hold both devices in my hands, IMO, S8+ looks like a 2017 smartphone, but doesn't perform like one. On the other hand, the Mate 9 design is more than okay for me, and it does perform amazing! So i chose performance this year, plus that i saved around $360 price difference, so IMO the Mate 9 is was better value for the money.
Personally I do not like the screen aspect ratio on s8. I like the pen on my note edge but performance and battery was so much better on Mate 9 I made the transition. Will probably go to Note 8 when it comes out.
Has anyone changed to the s8+ after the mate 9?
Im asking because my 6 month contract is going to the end, as i can give my current phone back and take a new one.
So im thinking about s8+ till the mate comes out in december.
And if i change ill get the exynos version not the snapdragon one.

I did, I got the s8+ and I used it for a month, I rage quit that phone. I have couple of grimes with the s8+ first the fingerprint sensor, on the mate 9 it's such an amazing thing I love it. But on the s8 makes me pull my hair.
Second the of so buggy software. I rooted and installed custom roms in hopes of fixing them. Yeah no.
I bought an al00 from China 6/128 and switched back to mate 9. I will say I miss the display on the Samsung but that's where it ends.

I still have my Mate 9 as a backup phone. I've always kept a backup for many years. I went way over to the dark side from the M9. I got a iPhone 7 Plus.
I cannot even think to replace my Mate 9. It's rock solid device with amazing performance and battery. I will stay on the bright side.
My partner got the s8+.
The screen is amazing.
Mate 9 is faster and smoother and battery lasts longer. It can take better photos if you know what you're doing - but the s8 just takes excellent photos snap after snap.
I bought the Mi6 Pro. Fastest of the bunch. But is it quick. And smooth. And great camera. Not so good MIUI, and small screen size.

I disagree with this. I have both phones and the Galaxy s8 speaker is one of the worst I've heard in awhile. It's subjective of course, but I think because they went with ip68 they had to make changes with the bottom firing speaker. I much prefer the richness of the mate 9 stereo sound even though the ear piece output is pretty weak.
I sold my mate 9 and bought an S8+. Speaker is terrible and general use of the phone was mediocre at best. The battery was truly shocking.
Ended up selling it and buying a oneplus 5. Battery life was very good, speaker was better but the jelly effect on the screen was bad once you noticed it.
Long story short I bought another mate 9 (128gb 6gb ram) and I should never have sold it in the first place. After using both the S8+ and oneplus 5 the mate 9 is just so much better. Going to take alot for me to change from this again, probably only a mate 10.

From S6 to S8. Is it worth the upgrade?

Hey guys.
I have the Galaxy S6 and I'm wondering if it is worth to upgrade from S6 to S8.
I've been using the S6 for quite some time, and now they launched Android Nougat (7.0) to the Galaxy S6, which I am currently using the official version.
But, I am wondering if I should upgrade to the Galaxy S8 (Non Plus) variant.
I'm in love with s8's screen.
If you can, please post a "reason" why I should or not be upgrading.
Thanks!

Better SOC, better graphics, better screen, more ram, more memory 64gb, sd card, better battery, better camera front and back, usb C, better performance overall......BUT if you didn't see all this already and you're still in doubt, might be that it doesn't worth the upgrade for you.
I did this. Battery almost 2x, Speed great, too.

As the title says I upgraded from the s6 edge and let me tell you it is worth the upgrade! :good:
Not least of all the S8 is waterproof, having paid £250 to repair a water damaged s6 edge last year i think its worth upgrading for this reason alone.
I like the fact the finger print scanner is on the back - it never made sense to me that it was on the front in the first place.
Face unlocker is fast to react.
And I am just chumping at the bit to get a DEX like dock (however at this point not willing to pay £110 for it).
Interesting comments.
I am really tempted into upgrading it. Since my S6 sometimes struggle when I'm scrolling on Chrome or Facebook, and I'm too far down.
I think it is time for that upgrade!
Is the battery really enough? I mean.. 3000 mAH on the S8.

Battery life has been a mixed bag for me - I'm not quite seeing as good a result as I've seen many post but it's likely due to varying conditions. It definitely gets better life than my S6 - I wouldn't make it to Noon with that and I start my day, off the charger at 430am. With the S8, I get through the entire day, no problem but might need a hit from the fast charger if I do some browsing after dinner...

Well you can upgrade but i recommend waiting for another phone with the same SOC...
My dad bought the S8 and is pretty meh...Narrow design, same screen as the s6 just bigger and slightly higher res which makes it looks strange...camera is the same as an S6 on good light conditions and slightly better on dark conditions...Figerprint positioning is absurd...Battery is not that good...SOC is newer but you wont notice any difference unless you try hard...And the price is way too high for whats is worth...
I dont want to start a new thread but i am wondering the same but i am coming from a oneplus one.. again is their any bonus in upgrading.. and how is development for samsung devices
i went from s6 edge + to s8. Very happy so far. the form factor fits better in the hand, software is fine. I like the back being glass. good feel overall.
A BIG YES. I upgrade from a s7 edge and to me it was so worth it
If you like the S6 and want to stay with Samsung, I'd say yes. Otherwise, I'd say wait until more info is available on the Google Pixel 2.
It's such a large upgrade from the S6 it's silly to even have to talk about all the reasons why. For comparison, the S8+ made the S7 Edge seem very dated. There is no comparison, unless you like old, slow phones with far inferior displays, memory size, camera..... I could go on. Not even in the same ballpark. By far the best phone made to date - S8/S8+. That changes every 6 months or so with a new phone taking the crown, but right now this is the top dog.
Agree, S8&S8+ are top-of-the-foodchain!
How are the lags on the S8? Because on the S6 when I'm scrolling in chrome or facebook I get lags. Usual android thing. That's what making me wonder if I should wait iphone 8 or get the galaxy s8. Btw, I don't plan going to Google Pixel 2 because I like the Samsung devices. I've always had Samsung phones. Tried Nexus once but I'm not a fan of stock android.
Upgraded today to the Grey/silver version from S6.
Ordered awesome spigen case too.
Role on Friday.

Zero lag in anything I have done on my S8+. Smoothest, fastest phone I have ever used.
I went from s6 Edge to S8. I think it's worth it. The battery is much better. Bigger screen, not as wide so easier to hold. It's pretty better all around. If you got nougat on your s6 then the software experience will not feel drastically different. Haven't really tested the camera head to head yet.

I have to disagree with you on a few points:
"far inferior displays" - Just because the S8 has a more futuristic look with its smaller bezels and increased height over the S6 I don't see it being fair to consider the S6 to be far inferior. The S6 featured an incredible screen at its time, and compared to alot of flagships out there it still is an amazing screen anno 2017! (pixeldensity is still better on the S6 vs the S8 by the way)
"memory size" - Just because the S8 features 1GB more, it does not mean that you actually use it. Just because it looks better on paper does not make it essential in daily usage. 4GB future proof? Yes! Absolutely necessary at this moment? Probably not.
"camera" - If you are talking about the front facing camera, then yes probably you are right. The rear camera however is only marginaly improved over the S6.
Don't get me wrong, I agree with you that the S8 beats the S6 in all of those points, but I think its actual difference in daily usage is to be argued whether the TS needs to upgrade or not
From S6 Edge to S8 is a perfect upgrade at all levels. I gave S6 to dad and I am using S8

S8 it's a bit too old phone, Mi9t is much better in speed and camera specs. So you can switch for sure.

Why worry about updates when everything just works great? Not worth for the sacrifice of anything, no matter how big or small. It's like switching bank just because they pay you 50 bucks for doing so, when in fact your previous bank was better when it came to long term usage.
S8 is a great phone, if your battery is not then replace it if you are confident enough. Not saying the Mi 9T is a bad phone but no point if you don't see any benefits apart from software updates.
i am going to do the opposite (mi 9t to S8+) after 1 month of use, the only thing that you will notice is the battery life everything else S8+ is better for sure ( i owned S8+ before) even the premium feel.
If your mainly focus is camera, I don't think it will be a great enough trade. Mi9T camera is very good in my opinion, but S8+ is probably still better. Front camera may be where Mi9T takes advantage. Battery definitely destroy S8+, there's no competition in that regard. Daily performance with normal usage and tasks will be faster and more fluid, but in heavy games S8+ will still perform better. My previous phone was a Moto Z2 Force, which had Snap 835 + 6GB RAM and performance is the same, with Z2F still performing better at heavy games. Everything else I feel Mi9T is better, specially battery.

Thank you. I get 7h sot on my S8+ so battery is not à problem. Galaxy makes gréât pictures with/without Gcam but this Last is verry slow.

If you are comparing S8 and Redmi Note 7 and Mi9t those are different devices in productivity, Mi9t is far more faster than S8 or Redmi Note 7, if you'd even compare Antutu score right now Mi9t reaches 247k which is far more than S8 or Redmi Note 7

Benchmarks do not interest me, in addition the GPU of exynos 8995 is much more powerful for games.
All I'm interested in is the camera for photos and videos.
Edit: so quoting ur post messes up my post... Dunno why
Maybe downgrade Gcam. I can see the Mi 9T being a great phone for you. You do not seem to be a heavy user which will benefit you even more in the Mi 9T due to that power efficient chip at the sacrifice of... No sacrifice. Because this thing easily plays games at high settings, although I'm the kind of guy to play on low:silly:
Apart from the cameras (S8 better is all I'm saying), it seems like the perfect phone for you, and many other people.
BUT
You are coming from a Galaxy S8+...

Unfortunately you are wrong as for the GPU
Why is Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 better than Samsung Exynos 8895?
2nm smaller semiconductor size
8nm vs 10nm
204MHz faster GPU clock speed
750MHz vs 546MHz
1 newer version of DirectX
12 vs 11
Has out-of-order execution
Supports ECC memory
The CPU speed is basically the same but the rest of the specs is much more advanced on Snapdragon 730
But all of you forgot the fact that S8+ is almost 3 years old. S8+ is more prone to having things stop working
Finally, I did it !

Time flies I guess... ( I actually forgot lol) the more prone to stop working thing isn't really something to worry about, like... I don't know how to explain this one.
Simply put, worst case scenario something stops and it makes you upgrade. Like nothing bad about it, you have already bought the phone and used it for quite a while, enough to make you want to upgrade.
Or are you implying that when that does happen its value is significantly reduced when selling it. That makes sense.

Nooo, why!! I'm joking. Man I wish I owned a S8 right now I don't know why:laugh:
Wait are you planning on selling it? Hadn't thought about that because then I would definitely say now is the time to upgrade because it is pretty much a FREE upgrade due to the price the S8 currently sells at (just checked; about £50-£80 less compared to last time I... Checked. Time really does fly lol) and you have the plus model so I'm glad you did it. Upgrading from a great phone to another.
Patience pays off
