T-Mobile s7 edge: why can't I use ONLY fingerprints to unlock my phone? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions & Answer

OK, I found one issue that might actually make me return the phone if this is the case.
I set my fingerprints to unlock my phone, but it says additional security is needed when I use fingerprints, so it's making me input a pin EVERY time I use my fingerprint to unlock. Wtf? This didn't happen on my s6. I can't figure out how to turn this off.

Mine only makes me put in my pin the first time I unlock after powering on. I don't like it but it's not too much of a bother. Not sure of the reasoning behind it. Yours is every time?

Yes. Have u tried a reboot?

Yep, just did.

Found the problem.
I'm using Nova launcher and I use the double tap screen to lock the device. When I double tap to lock it and then wake it back up, it makes me use my fingerprint and pin. If I lock it with just the power button then it unlocks with just my fingerprint. Didn't have this issue on my s6. Weird.

I have same problem with s6 after update to 6.0.1
it was after reboot not every single time.

That's the change Google made to Android. It's not a Samsung "feature." The Nexus 5X has that too and it bugs me once in a while.

What's the point in having finger print reader for security if you have to enter a pin anyway? Makes no sense to me. It would be much quicker to use pin only! What a useless feature.

As mentioned above, this is a change to Android. When restarting the device, it asks you enter your pin manually. I don't mind it, since I seldom restart my phone anyway.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk

Even iphones make you enter a pin upon restart. But only after a restart.
Don't see a problem with entering a pin once when you restart.

I restart my phone maybe once a week. This is a complete non-issue.

Agreed

Has anyone else noticed how sh*ty the fingerprint scanner is? It only works half of the time for me which is annoying. I have a Nexus 6P so I'm used to it being a seamless transition to unlock the phone. I've resetup my fingers a few times now but it's annoying how it doesn't register sometimes.

Ah, if it's only required every restart, this is not an issue for me

Christ, you really do have a hangup on this thing.
I specifically asked to try out the fingerprint scanner in the Samsung store on Sunday and, once I set it up, I spent a number of minutes locking and unlocking it using the scanner. I did this because my previous experience with Samsung's fingerprint scanner was on the S5 and that was poor. On the S7 I didn't have a single issue, not one unlock failure. Perhaps you have a faulty device?

Don't get me wrong I still like the phone, but there are several rather interesting issues I've noticed. My 6P isn't without issues either, but it happens.
I could have a defective unit; I'll have to use it more before I see if it continues. The S7E usually says place your finger on the scanner and 'wipe' which doesn't make sense because it's a touch sensor not one like the S5 had. Either way Google certainly has the best FP scanner so far until someone else makes one that's as fast and accurate.

My S7e fingerprint scanner is working great, no problems.
The device asks for the unlock code only after reboot, as previously stated. Any other time the unlock number pad shows up, my fingerprint bypasses it. Why does the unlock number pad show up sometimes? Because I sometimes turn on the screen with the power button and immediately swipe the screen before I touch the home button sensor. But if I turn the screen on with the home button, and leave my finger on it for a split second, it unlocks flawlessly.

You definitely do not need to swipe on the S7 Edge. That went away with the S5 reader. If you have the phone in a case, then your finger may be hitting the scanner in a way that it can't read it completely. Although I have yet to run into it with the S7 Edge, I had it all the time with my Note 5, and I fixed it by enrolling the same finger twice. Make sure to contact the sensor from all kinds of weird angles on the second run and you'll be fine.

Haven't had it mess up once. Seems a little faster than the s6 even which was pretty much instant for me. On s6 I found adding a second fingerprint of the same finger improved accuracy if I was having problems though.

Lockscreen unlock lag

Am I the only one who has been having issues with the lock screen locking up on unlock? had this issue before I rooted am still having this issue.
Find i have to relock (power button) a few times before it starts to work!
Haven't had this problem. It has been smooth since stock. I find it weird that you had the issue before rooting.
Do you have any custom kernels? Any homescreen widgets? Does it happen consistently?
Nope, none, no stock widgets or anything like that, about as stock as you can get.
Happens once every 10 unlocks i would say, might have to send it back!
I can confirm this issue
Face unlock is on with pattern unlock as backup
Whenever face unlock fails I try to enter pattern....pattern does not work
Phone doesn't even show pattern(like its not accepting touch input and I do have it set to "show pattern" )
Slide up to Google Now when unlock pattern screen appear and you get new unlock pattern screen.....entering pattern here works
I suspect it is related to face unlock....when face unlock fails it never locks for touch input
This error occurs 70% of the time not always

I have removed root etc done a fresh wipe and still have the unlock lag issue l, i don't use face unlock. going to try and get a swap from o2 today.
Used to have this problem when using autobrightness
Mine has hung a few times on the lockscreen and each and every time it has, Auto brightness has took a dump.
I don't recall it doing it more than one per reboot though, I'll have to monitor that.

Yes I have this exact issue and posted on it about a week ago in the Q&A forum.
I push the power button and I cannot drag the slide unlock. If I wait 10 seconds it sometimes unfreezes and lets me. I have to cycle the power button until it finally lets me slide unlock.
I've completely wiped the device and that has had no benefit.
What apps do you have installed? I've wondered if it's an app.
I use Words with Friends, IMDB, Reddit is Fun, Tapatalk, and Google News & Weather widget. I'm going to try disabling auto brightness to see if that fixes as suggested above.

I have also been experiencing this, really is infuriating not being able to unlock your own phone sometimes... Usually cycling the screen on and off a few times seems to work.
I ended up ripping off my brand new BestSkinsEver thinking it might have been the cause!
Same here. In my case, i am using PIN and sometimes it lags out while trying to enter my pin and i have to press power button to lock it and try again.

I have the same problem, and I think i have found a way to replicate the issue.
1. Turn off the screen.
2. Wait around 5 seconds.
3. Put three fingers on the screen at the same time.
4. And without moving the fingers turn on the screen.
At this time the touchscreen doesn't respond or it has some kind of lag and you have to reunlock the screen to make it work again.
Can anyone test this?
Sorry for my english.

This way the lock screen is unresponsive but I feel that it is not the same issue.
The lag I usually experience with the bug is more like the phone doesn't wake up properly and can't handle the input in (real) time
PS. I had this on my 8 GB model (sold) and 16 GB model

Are you using a double tap to turn off app for your screen? They interfere with it.

Is this happening every single time you use your fingerprint or only after a boot/reboot? It should only occur once after each time the phone has booted up.

Same problem here. Sometimes it asks for the passcode after the fingerprint. Sometimes on bottom of the screen the print sensor icon is replaced by a lock. I just had another bug where I was on chrome browsing a website and the lockscreen appeared by itself.
EDIT: I uninstalled this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.qihoo.security&hl=fr and it seems to not happen again for the moment. (I also tried to disable lockscreen security, then enable it again, registering my fingers again but it didn't solved it)
EDIT2: Oops it did it again.
Go to Security-> Device Administrator and untick all the apps. Lock your phone with power button. Now, try fingerprint.
Probably one of the apps there is misbehaving.
Sent from my Nexus 6P
Same thing kept happening to me, I realised that its because I used a screen lock widget on my home screen to lock the screen. It didnt work when i did that. But if i use the power button to turn screen off, it goes back to the normal imprint mode.

when i put my finger of the scanner it open the pattern lock

somethimes when I put my finger on the scanner instead of unlock it it ask for the pattern password and sometimes it works well.
(when I try with finger that isn't in the system its vibrate and do nothing so from this I figure that it does recognize my finger when I use the right one and it open the pattern)
what can I do
Edit:i found the problem I was used an app names screen lock that make this problem if someone have the same problem check if u use an app that have connection with the lock screen you can check this is settings security
It asks for the pattern on the first fingerprint unlock after a reboot. Could it be your case?
Inviato dal mio Nexus 6P utilizzando Tapatalk
It will do this when you first restart your phone.
Happens on every reboot, as @lomax79 and @geoff5093 said. I have also had it occasionally ask for my password for "extra protection".
do you have a lock screen replacement or perhaps you are using a launcher that has lockscreen settings enabled?
if so, that is likely the 'issue'. Try disabling it/them.
I occasionally get the password screen after attempting to unlock with a fingerprint. This is not after a reboot, just random times throughout the day. At first I thought it was random reboots while in my pocket, but the uptime clock has not been reset.
I've been getting this from day one and it seems to have good times and bad times regarding g how often it happens I could understand it happening if I was buying something.
Oh and it seems to happen more if I shut the phone down with Tap screen but if I put phone down and let it power down on its own it won't ask for password on next restart, bugs me a bit.hope Google can polish it up a bit.

It's not happen just after reboot it happen sometimes per day
It's possible your phone has been constantly rebooting. The only time it will ask for your pin or password is when you first boot up the device as an extra security layer. I've RMA'd my current device for that reason as well. Expecting a new one Monday. If the problem keeps happening I'd recommend RMA'ing

After Power ON, MUST use Knock Code first instead of fingerprint?

Anyone else seeing this behavior? On my 995, whenever I restart, or power on my phone.. I have to use the Knock Code to get into my phone, and it says "fingerprints unavailable for use" or something to that effect.
I find this odd behavior.
Its not odd behavior its LG behavior.
Unfortunately there's no way around it.
turn off secure startup in security...
Your fingerprint is encrypted and you phone can't access encrypted data until you unlock it after a reboot. So its kinda a catch 22 where you will always have to unlock with a pin after startup instead of fingerprint. Your fingerprint is biometric data and obviously can't be changed so it needs to more secure on your phone than your pin which you can change. It is this way on most phones with fingerprint readers.

It's not just LG, my Samsung S7 and Note 7 both required pin code on first log in after a reboot/boot up

It's not even Android. My work phone is an iPhone and it has the same behavior. Which drives me nuts because our work phones require us to change pin codes every couple of months and we can't recycle codes.
I turned off secure startup as I don't need kids messing with my phone and I imagine after ten attempts if wipes it?

If I'm right, the op is taking about setting the fingerprint to unlock but it still requires the pattern. You will notice this if you use a third party app or launcher to lock screen. E.g. Nova launcher double tap to lock screen. It will tell you fingerprint is unavailable.
A work around to this is to doubly tap the top part of the screen (the bar where the date and signal strength is).
This will allow you to unlock with fingerprint.
If you use the stock lg launcher then double tapping anywhere on screen shows you to unlock using fingerprint.

I'm working with a developer of Screen Lock Pro to try and find a workaround for this. Currently his app will work on Android 5 and 6 by delaying the lock for 5-10 seconds but it's currently not working on Android 7 on LG (it is working on Pixel and Nexus devices).
Hmmm... Not sure I understand this behavior. My fingerprint is much more complex than a 4-digit code that can eventually be brute-forced (phone wipe or not - in theory I mean).. so why wouldn't my fingerprint be the top-most factor in unlocking the phone? I mean.. say I'm one of those guys that uses his last four of an SSN like an idiot, and someone knows that about me.. boom, they're in my phone. Do iPhones do this for real (as stated above)?

Yup, every time I restart my iPhone, it asks for my pin number and the finger print reader is inoperable. Even when I don't restart my iPhone for a while, it will occasionally lock out the reader and require a pin to wake.

I always assume as much. Not really a bother for me. The iPhone is a work phone that I don't like carrying or touching. My personal phone is always my go to for anything unless it is work related.
I have this on my nexus 6p also. When ever i reboot the phone it requires me to use my pattern to unlock. It's a "feature" of sorts. Not going to go into my thoughts as to why but i think i may understand why they did that.
In case anyone is wondering, a few conditions that force you to use backup method are being left alone (with no smart locks enabled or active) for 4 hours, a reboot, and a failed scan 5 times in a row.
The reboot case is due to encrypted data (no matter what you do, your phone is encrypted on boot, unless you fix that, however, you phone will still treat it as such). The only reason I can imagine for the time out is in case a ninja chops off your fingers in your sleep. As for the wrong input, that seems annoying sure, but odds are if you got the fingerprint wrong 5 times in a row, it's not you.
Yeah v10 does this as well on fresh boot ups.
I'm not sure I understand the reason behind it I would think it would be less secure this way.

I'm not sure I'm following as to why encryption matters. Are you saying my fingerprint data is encrypted? If so, why isn't my PIN also encrypted?
Speaking of fingerprints has anyone run into the issue where the phone "forgets" your print? I have had this happen at random times and while the fingerprint data is still saved the phone fails to recognize my finger so I have to set it up again.

Smart Lock issues

Is anyone else having issues with smart lock? I have my phone set to unlock with my fingerprints which works perfect, and I also have smart lock set to keep my phone unlocked at home. The problem is at least half of the time when I am at home I have to use my fingerprints to unlock my phone.

I always had this issue with smart lock. Give Bixby routines a try instead. It's been much more reliable when doing things based on location.

It's Smart Lock issue itself, not device specific. It literally never worked on my HTC 10, was spotty on HTC U11 and Tab S3, and is still spotty on S10+.
Google attempted to fix location problem in SL couple times already (they even disabled Trusted Places for short time) but to no avail.
