SD card notification won't go away - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Does anybody have an sd card notification that keeps coming back. When I click it it opens up file explorer. I can dismiss it and it comes back.

I do and asked with no response but now i know im not alone lol

I think any questions may be kind of hard to answer at the moment due to the device not actually being released until the 8th

I just clicked on it (non-expanded) and it seems to have gone away until a restart.

Many of us are TMO users with the device in hand [emoji13]

It kept on giving me the notification with a brand new 128gb PNY until it finally just didn't recognize it at all. I put in my old 32gb SanDisk and now it only shows on reboot.

Hahaha that makes me feel sad

I just swiped to dismiss it and then after it didn't show up again

Press and hold the notification, then press the I on the right and chose block all notifications, this should work in theory.

I just noticed that it is after restarting the phone so I'll try that next time.

It's only on start up or when re mounting the card for me.. if you swipe it away it stays gone

Nice work Samsung, you just released an awesome buggy phone.

It's normal for new releases to have some bugs. Samsung will probably release an update to fix any bugs.

Multiple bugs for sure. Mine does the same thing constantly and I have a 64gb Samsung card in mine. Also the stupid UAC which promtps you to allow or deny to use every app you install and also the fact that OTG cables don't work with gamepads either. I feel like I downgraded from my note 5.

I just called T-Mobile and tech support said they're getting a lot of calls about the sd slot being bad. Mine unmounts and ejects the sd every 20 minutes or so now. They're sending me a new one.

S7 Edge Verizon. No matter how many time you swipe the notice closed or turn off notifications from the system ui it KEEPS COMING BACK!!! I hate this phone because of that already. It's driving me nuts! Guess I'll call Samsung tech support I really don't want to have to resort to root and xposed to get rid of this.

Hey guys, just wanted to post a solution to the problem. All of you with this phone, that use an external SD card, are getting an annoying notification that says, "SD card For transferring photos and media," and it doesnt seem to go away. If this message appears over and over again in your status bar, the only known way to get rid of it was to previously just keep "clearing" it out or remove the SD card completely.
If you are receiving a notification "SD card For transferring photos and media" on your Samsung Galaxy S7 and you cannot get the notification to go away, please try to do the following:
1. BACKUP your sd card - plug your phone into your computer and copy off the contents of the SD card
2. On the phone, navigate to: Settings >> Memory >> SD Card
3. In the submenu, choose FORMAT
All of the data on the memory card will be formatted to the correct file system and the memory card will be reconnected to the phone for proper use. The message, "SD card For transferring photos and media" should no longer appear.
Hopefully this helped you out! Thanks!

Same. That was the first thing I tried and it doesn't make a difference.

Same issue. I used scotch tape and put 3 pieces on top of the SD card. Now the issue happens 1/day instead of 1/hour. 5 pieces of tape and it is too thick to close, or it gets caught inside the phone. I'm trying to figure out if this is a physical or software issue. The last time it failed yesterday I had dropped it (6 to 8 inches) to a carpeted floor, so I'm not sure if it was coincidence or truly a physical issue. Verizon store guy changed my SIM card, but that doesn't seem to have much of an effect (love the placebo attempt). The SD card worked fine in my S5.

[Q] Micro SD Problem

Hello everyone. I have tried searching for a fix to this problem on this forum as well as Google but have not found anything. If I overlooked it somehow I apologize in advance.
My Vibrant shows an exclamation point on the top right next to my 16gb SD card icon. I can mount and unmount the card without issues. I can retrieve data, drag & drop as well as access the card without issue. I tried reformatting, shutting the phone down and reinserting the card and nothing seems to help.
I am running everything stock on my Vibrant, no root, themes or mods of any sort. My pc does not have a card reader installed. I do all the formatting through the Vibrant.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

i suspect reason no one has responded is that it's not clear what the problem is -
you indicate "I can retrieve data, drag & drop as well as access the card without issue." which would indicate no problem
assuming you do like i do occasionally, ie speed type, and that the issue you can not retrieve data or drag & drop, one suggestion would be to ask - did you format in the FATS 32 format or NTSC
the samsung requires FATS 32
I just used the Vibrant to format the card so I'm assuming it is FAT 32.
The only problem I have is the exclamation next to the SD card icon on the top right of the screen, aside from that, everything seems to work fine. I just don't know why it's there or if it will cause trouble in the future.
Does it look like a triangle at the home screen? If so, that just means you have debug mode enabled. In general, you want debug mode enabled, because it allows you to connect the phone via ADB and PDAnet. If you want to turn it off, just slide down the notifications and select the exclamation point to turn it off.
There are probably some times you want it off, but I cannot think of any right now.
If this icon is in the notification, what does the notification menu tell you the issue is? I'm also guessing it's the red triangle with ! in it which is the debugging mode on icon.
Here is a screenshot of mine. See the top, left corner.
I do have debugging on but that's not the exclamation I'm worried about. Check out the screen.
That's not your SD, it's your SIM.
According to the manual, that icon "Displays when there is no SIM card in the phone."
I had a similar issue where my SD card & internal store (save for dedicated app space) was unreadable. This is doesn't sound like your issue. But if it is, I had to return the phone. They were very understanding.

[Q] Mirco SD Card Problems?

Just got the phone and am having a problem already. I am unable to mount my memory card onto the phone. If I mount it is just disconnects a few moments later. I have tried multiple cards and I know they all work.... gutted....
Make sure your back cover is on properly, I've noticed that when I take the back cover off the sd card unmounts and won't mount until its back on, its part of the design.

Try restarting the phone it would not recognise my SIM card until I restarted it.
cheers guys...I managed to get it working. Not sure if this is what did it but I mounted it then for the few seconds it was mounted I unmounted it; then plugged into PC which somehow recognized it even though it wasn't mounted at the time.
And ye I noticed that little white switch at the back which if you press down it unmounts the mem card.... never seen that on a phone before.
Cheers ppl
Hi!
If you have the case pulled from the phone, your SD is dismounted. Why? If yoy see your phone without case you must see a strange botton in the right of the flash, press it, if this botton is pressed, your SD works; when the case is on the phone this botton is always pressed.
Regards
Yeah that took me four hours to realize too...
Damn back cover!!!
I was just glad I read this topic before I got my play
I had 1 corner that just didn't clicked at first but I didn't notice untill I noticed no sd card was mounted.
Stupid Button
Oh my gosh, thanks guys! I have been messing with this stupid thing for hours! Why the extra little button Sony? To drive your customers insane?
I don't know why SE do a back cover control mounting SDCard..........
I had tried half an hour to find this problem when I bought the play...........
just return and exchange it!
theyve added the button so that we dont corrupt our SD cards, it automatically mounts + unmounts, thats a feature we should be happy about

32gb micro sandisk not mounting ??

hi,just tried my new 32gb sandisk & it wont stay on,i plugged it in & it says i can safely remove & when i mount it it appears as 29gb and then vanishes again, ive erased the card but still wont stay & also restarted phone ??? any ideas ? is the card a duff ?
bloody hell now my old card is doing the samething & all my data, music & videos etc are not showing ?
none of my cards will stay mounted & ive factory reset also, they just appear & disappear 16gb & my new 32gb sandisk ?
notification keeps coming up to safely remove sd card
There is a little switch that clicks down when you put the back down. Be sure the back cover of your phone is all the way one or it won’t mount.
Also once you change cards your old card will not work in your phone again (data wise).
The phone seems to marry to the card then forget the old card. I learned that the hard way when I put a smaller card in while I rooted my phone (all I did was format the other card at that point). Then I put my main card back in all my games had to be reinstalled.
You can copy all the data files from one card to the other and the phone will recognize both properly

Not that I know of. Like I said it forgot my SD after putting a new one in and formatting it. So i'm guessing one at a time.

SD card corrupted

I have a Verizon S5 with a 32gb SD card that I'm using to store media as well as apps.
Today a few strange things happened all at once:
I had an icon in my notification tray informing me I should format my SD card.
All of the applications that were installed on the SD card show a greyed out SD card icon and when clicked on they say "Application not installed".
"The check battery cover" notice keeps popping up.
I have rebooted my phone. I have removed the back cover, battery, and SD card and re-seated them all firmly. (None of this has helped).
I never remove my back cover as my phone is in a protective case and I have yet to drop my phone, so I'm not sure what is causing this behavior.
My question is, do I have to re-format my SD card or is there anything I can do to recover it. If not, is there anything I can do to prevent this in the future (without rooting my phone)?
Thanks.
Is your phone rooted? If so, did you flash any custom kernels, ROMs? If the answers to all or any of questions above is negative, than yes, you SD card is corrupted.
If you did any of the actions mentioned above, than just reverse it and see if it helps
No I'm completely stock. I guess my only choice is to format. This is my first non-Nexus and my first Samsung and so far I've been a bit disappointed.
Thanks for the reply.

Fire HD 10 (2021) "How will you use this Storage device" pop-up

Recently, I have a micro SD card that I plug in to my HD10 so I can access to media while offline. But ever since then, I keep getting these "How will you use this Storage device" question when I unlock my HD10. It is getting very annoying.
It doesn't matter if I choose "PORTABLE STORAGE" or "SET UP LATER". It just keeps on popping up after I unlock. I've installed Fire Toolbox. I don't know if it is related. Its firmware is frozen. I don't know what the OS version was but it is before the version that forced Locked Screen Ads.
Any ideas how I can get rid of that pop-up?
Choose setup your card. If you pick set it up later, it will ask you later which is the next time you turn it on. Either that or remove the sdcard, throw if across the room. If there's no card, there's nothing to ask about any more

Not sure what you mean by "setup your card". The only options are:
TABLET STORAGE
PORTABLE STORAGE
SETUP LATER
Choosing the first one means make it part of built-in storage and it will format my card. Which likely means it will format to some ext3-ish partition, lose everything I copied to the card and I cannot remove the card when I want.
Choosing PORTABLE STORAGE seems the way to go. But it does not stop the pop-up. Not at all.
SETUP LATER has the exact same effect as PORTABLE STORAGE, as far as I am concerned.
This is likely the biggest F**k up by Amazon to date. This has been an ongoing issue for ages now - I have tried pretty much EVERY potential solution to no avail. Despite the device only being a month-old Amazon suggested sending me a refurbished one.... I mean is that simply the WORST example of customer service or what. I wish I could make this scam more public!

I am not sure, could be a problem with the port(?) Why Would it be so intermittent and why, I mean WHY are Amazon getting away with such a scam whether its software (in which case fix it) or hardware (in which case recall).
Ridiculous!
After my previous reply, I decided to reinsert the micro SD card. To my surprised, I stopped getting that annoying "How will you use this Storage device" pop up for a solid 2 weeks period. Even after a reboot.
But unfortunately, it started popping up again. I now suspect it is some sort of hardware problem but no matter how I reinsert, I still get the pop-up. and I may have to bite the bullet and exchange my HD10.
Seems like the trick is that I need to format the SD card using the FireHD. After that, I can take the card out, copy files, insert it back, all that without triggering the pop-up again.
I spoke too soon. The problem came back all of a sudden and no amount of format would fix the issue. Seems like a hardware problem. I will try switching to a different micro SD card.
Switched to a different microSD card. Issue have not returned for the last 2 weeks. Fingers crossed.

The post above was my update. No issues after switching microSD card.
Oh well. It didn't last. The same SD card used for 6 weeks without issue suddenly throwing the error again. I haven't been adding any file to it in the last week. I don't know what triggered it. I am sick of this.
Hi, I've same issu
I've created another post for same problem, and about SD ebcryption too... but I had it in "Fire HD 8 and HD 10 General" that's why I didn't see your post!
My SD card is a 256GB Sandisk Micro SDXC UHS-I (V30 3U A2). what's yours?
It could be a model/type/size SD card problem.
Does someone have the same problem with a SD card set as "tablet storage" (instead of "portable storage")?
If you have no trouble with your SD card, coud you please tell us which brand/model/size is, and specify if it's set as "portable storage" or "tablet storage"?
Thank a lot for your help
Chris
I am using a AmazonBasics 256GB microSD. I posted back in Jan 5th that I ran into the problem again. But problem went away after a reboot. So far I have not experience it at all.
I think the pop up message has something to do with the SD card's timing. Seems like I am more likely to run into this problem with more expensive cards.
