Messenger App doesn't have Group Messaging option - X Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My service provider is Bell Mobility. My firmware is Android 6.0 (Marshmallow), and the Messenger app version is 1.7.050, which is up-to-date.
I'm intending to send out group messages as a single conversion rather than each recipient getting individual messages. I don't see the 'Group Messaging' option in the advance settings page of the Messenger App however; and my SIM does recognize my number since it's in the 'SIM status' page.
Oddly enough though, the option is present in the settings of the Hangouts app.
Any way to enable it in the Messenger app? I know there's alternatives to use other messaging apps, but I prefer to use Messenger, and want to use all the features it's suppose to offer.

My friend had similar problem on his Galaxy S5. He didn't have color changing option. So he just uninstalled the Messenger app and reinstalled it. That fixed his problem.

Gave that a shot but no dice. Also doubled check my APN to make sure all MMS settings are good.

Oh sorry I thought you meant Facebook Messenger. I didn't know about group chat feature on Google Messenger though ?

iPhone MMS not appearing on Messages but they show fine on Google Hangouts... WTH?!?

This one has me scratching my head looking for answers. I noticed this problem a while ago where my friends MMS sent from iPhones were not appearing on my Messages, I have the option for "fetch MMS automatically" and all I get is the little cloud but its blank, it only shows the time it was received, I've also tried disabling the fetch MMS automatically and even when downloading them it shows me the blank cloud. The doozy comes when I tried using Hangouts just to see what it was and to my surprise I could see all my SMS and MMS conversations from my contacts and all the pictures from the iPhone contacts were shown via Hangouts but they do not show on the stock Messages app.
Things I've tried:
1) Googling for answers only resulted in fanboyism comments and speculations that led to more fanboyism.
2) At first I tried contacting my carrier and they made me reset the APN settings to default, which I did and it was after that that I realized that it was only the iPhone MMS messages that weren't being received.
3) Tried disabling the Hangouts services via the Apps option on the settings menu. Restarted phone and still wouldn't work.
4) Been restarting my phone with each setting I change to see if it helps but no.
5) Been bugging my friends to send me MMS from their iPhones and one did get through but nothing more after that.
6) Made sure their iPhones had the setting of "Send MMS when iChat isn't available" enabled.
7) Made sure my old iPhone account was signed out of my old iPhone 4 so I wasn't receiving anymore iMessages.
I'm speculating that I either need to call my carrier again which is Claro PR and explain the situation to see if it helps, or maybe go to a store. Also, I've been thinking about Rooting my phone so I can uninstall some of the bloat, which included Hangouts but don't want to go down that path yet and I don't know if it would really help anything since I already tried disabling the service via the Apps options.
Please help me figure this out, I love this phone but this thing is bugging the hell out of me.
I have had problems with mms on hangouts and the stock app on Sprint doesn't support group mms. I have been using Go sms pro and everything works fine, including iPhone mms messages.
Hope that helps.

Hmm... interesting a replacement messaging app, I would definitely keep this in mind so thanks a lot for the suggestion. I rather use the stock apps while I'm getting used to the phone since this is my first Android device but will definitely use this if resetting to factory defaults doesn't help my problem.
*Edit*
Any other suggestions for my problem are welcomed.
LG didn't enable MMS group messaging on stock messages. My HTC One and S4 had the option in settings to enable it...LG left it out. If you haven't heard, TEXTRA is one of the best, fastest, light weight messaging apps that can handle iPhone group messages without the bloat on go sms and handcent. Look it up on the playstore...ratings are great and all my Android friends use it now. I've yet ran into any issues with group texting.

Hi and thanks for the reply, I've looked up Textra and seems like a nice alternative and has a very clean interface, I'm currently using Hangouts from Google without a problem but would have preferred the stock message app. It's weird because I went to my carrier and they did some test and everything was fine, turns out its only MMS sent from iPhones that won't show through the Message app from G2. Maybe I should try emailing them to see if I can get some answers?
Yea only the Verizon variant supports group messages. I posted a thread about this in the Themes and Apps forum. Could be the cause.
All my friends group text me all the time and send MMS using the Verizon version Messaging app and hangouts. The stock messaging app world best though.

Can't receive MMS-pulling my hair out

Hopefully someone can provide me a solution to this headache of a problem. I was on straight talk (at&t) and I stopped receiving MMS messages. I tried every APN configuration I could find and none worked. I installed a different rom and they worked for a while and stopped. I decided to try out project fi so I didn't try a new sim. I also restored to stock for a fresh start. My Fi service started today and I'm still not able to receive MMS messages. Sending them works fine as far as I can tell. I called Google and none of their solutions worked and they told me the port can take time to fully go through. While I was waiting for the port to complete I used my straight talk sim on my one plus 2 and did receive a picture during that time. Is it possible that the problem is with the phone itself? Does anyone have any other solutions I can try? Dialing some set of symbols and numbers to get into additional phone settings or anything like that? This is driving me crazy! Thank you for any advice that you can provide me!

I've heard that some add blocking apps can screw with mms. Have one of those installed?
I had a similar problem on AT&T. I fixed it by deleting any unneeded APNs and using the stock "Messenger" app. I use to use SMS Go Pro but it failed to send any MMS texts. It worked fine on my Nexus 5. Also using Google Hangouts didn't work.

I tried that with straight talk too without success. With Fi there are no APN settings. I'm using the stock messenger app as well. One other thing is that I can send myself a picture and it goes through, which is weird. I can't figure out why I can send but not receive. Thank you!

This happened to me before and I did this and restated the phone and it worked. I was able to receive MMS (I'm with AT&T)

Have you tried Textra as your messaging app? They have mms settings where the wifi turns off temporarily when sending or receiving a message. I had a little trouble with mms, and then I set my apn to Ipv4/ Ipv6 and implemented the wifi fix in Textra. There are also other settings for Project Fi in the advanced settings.

I have Android Device Manager as a Device Administrator as well and I get MMS fine. I'm on Verizon though, and I had to change the APN settings (actually, only 1 of the MMS of the many I sent out seemed to not get sent completely).

I hate to resurrect a dead thread, but I'm having this issue too. Removing ADM as a Device Admin, deleting extra APN's, adding chrome as the default browser, and only using Messenger did not help. Then I noticed that when my phone first turned on, I would send and receive any MMS messages that were trying to download or send at the time of the reboot. So I wondered if another app was messing with the MMS function. So I downloaded aSpotCat to see what had permissions to SMS functions, and went into Settings -> Apps and disabled the SMS permission from each app other than stock Google. Rebooted. Testing now. I'm going to try pulling some logcats this weekend when I find the time.
--edit--
for what it's worth, with all but the stock apps having the SMS permission blocked, after a reboot, about 15 minutes in I am able to send / receive MMS messages now. I lost the ability after about 2 minutes after boot prior to this. I'll keep testing, and re-enable the permissions later to see if I can replicate the problem and pull a logcat.
Full list of apps I had installed requesting SMS permissions (the ones in red I disabled):
Amazon Shopping
Contacts
Google App
Google Play services
Google Play Store
Hangouts
Messenger
RingPack
ROM Toolbox Pro
Snapchat
Tasker
Titanium Backup
I also had TrueCaller and AT&T Visual Voicemail Viewer, but I just uninstalled those

Textra as default SMS app, Messaging app randomly receiving texts

Has anyone seen this behavior on the V20? I have Textra set as the default SMS app and randomly, I get a notification from the Messaging app that I have a new text or MMS. The odd thing is that those messages won't show up in Textra, only in Messaging.
So far it seems to be with 1 contact, my brother who is on T-Mobile using an S6. I deleted my convo in Messaging with him when this happened yesterday and deleted his convo with me on his phone and it was fine. Just now, I got an MMS from him and happened again. Seems odd...
Anyone else?

I tried that right after I posted, actually. Seeing if it happens again.
How can I get textra to show on second screen
Will Textra send via WiFi? I have not tried the app yet.
Thanks
I'm not seeing this behavior yet. However, Textra and the Messaging app aren't showing any of my contacts. I keep syncing them, and they show up in the Contacts app, but it's like the Textra/messaging app doesn't have access to them or something.
Edit: Reboot helped.

Just in case anyone else is having this issue I seemed to have found a fix. Go to settings then apps. Select the native messaging app. Revoke permissions, block notifications, switch "message app" to No, switch draw over other apps to No. Delete Textra, restart phone, reinstall Textra, & set Textra as default app (simply go into Textra & begin to use it, it will ask if you want to make it the default). This should hopefully fix any issues anyone might be having.

EDIT: @Kief_haring
After following the steps you listed, the stock messaging app settings (permissions/notifications) reverted back to enabled.
The message app & draw-over other apps settings remained off (no).
There's some MMS settings within the Textra app that are T-Mobile specific, may need to have some trial & error to get things just right,YMMV.

You have to make sure you don't open the native app after setting everything to off. Maybe just set them all to off, delete Textra then reinstall. Don't restart phone as that may be what is enabling the native messaging app settings. I have T-Mobile as well. I enable the T-Mobile MMS over wifi option to on within Textra. Let me know if this works out, if not I'll try to troubleshoot the issue a bit more.

T Mobile wifi fix. Apologies for not being more clear about that. When you set that you can actually see wifi shut off & 4G take over when sending an MMS. Never have trouble sending a picture after setting that up.

Also with MMS Behavior, Legacy seems to be working well on the V20. Haven't had to even think about switching to System MMS.

3rd party messenger apps can't send/receive MMS

Anyone also have this problem, I can't send/receive MMS with 3rd party messenger apps like Google messenger, has anyone else encountered this or found a fix?
Check the app permissions?
Checked all permissions, everything looks good but can't send/receive mms messages, I can send SMS messages
Yes!
I've been trying to track this since yesterday. I lost it somewhere between all the flashing and customizing of EU ROM.
It definitely did work on Chinese official.
I can send SMS and MMS from 3rd party, but I can only receive SMS in it.
The incoming MMS are disappearing into thin air, that is as long as 3rd party app is handling SMS as default.
With all hair ripped out of my skull, I'm getting ready to wipe again.
Which ROM are you on ?

Damn, just made a thread for this too.
I can't send or receive MMS...I am on the Stock Chinese ROM...
I was never able to send/receive MMS on the Chinese official stable rom, and now that I'm on Lithium EU rom it still doesn't work. I have checked APN settings several times, and allowed all permissions but something is preventing MMS for sending/receiving.
I had some MMS wonkiness too several months ago with mi Mi Max (since then upgraded to Mix). I tried quite a few MMS apps, finding Textra handling all my messages, including images, just fine. I've stayed with it since and it's worked great, no issues or lost messages/images.
It is ROM dependent. Some of the ROM's do not work well because of a conflict on the locale setting vs the APN
Same problem.
Material messaging works perfect though. I guess because it has the ability to input custom APN settings
I'm having a similar problem with the google dialer. It won't list call history even though it has full permission. I've tried disabling and removing stock dialer to no effect.
me 2...
I cannot use the google messenger to send mms either. I am on 6.12.22 global rom. I tried setting all sorts of permission, won't send. I tried the Mi Mix's built in texting app, works.. hmmm...
Try
Settings -> Installed Apps -> Defaults -> Messaging -> switch to your app or switch to the xiaomi messenger app and then switch back to your app.
I had this issue with my Mix. It turned out that setting my phone to Norwegian did this when using Ice.net provider. Using English solved it, but I ended up changing provider and now it works fine with Norwegian.

Android Messenger Issues

Anyone have any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this issue -
Have Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge on Verizon. Was using Android Messenger by Google as my SMS app. About three weeks ago, my wife's texts from her Samsung Galaxy S7 on Verizon (also generated by Android Messenger) started coming in under the name "Anonymous" instead of her contact info and I could not text her (either as a reply or a new message). After some troubleshooting, we both switched to the default Samsung texting app and I can, usually, text her. However, sometimes, I get "Error 5: Other Network Error" when texting her. By waiting a while the message will go through. Android Messenger (which I keep trying to switch to) refuses to send messages to her - via the phone or Android Messenger for Web.
I can't find any discussion that this is a known issue for Android Messenger. I can't find any settings on either phone or Verizon online that says that there's some issue. Does anyone have any thoughts?
hey i had the same problem.
what i had to do was disable the samsung messaging app before setting the Android messenger app to default.

Weird. Well, it won't let me do that for some reason, but I did learn that I was behind on OTA updates by about 2 months. After doing both Aug. and Sept., it works. Not sure why. Guess we can mark this as solved.
