Looking at the Galaxy S7, I'm sticking with my S6 - Galaxy S6 General

Not being funny, but I think the S6 is a better looking phone than the S7. There are a few things going for the S7, expandable storage, waterproof, bigger battery. But I get on just fine with my 64gb S6 and think I will wait for the S8.

Waiting for the S8 as well. Hopefully samsung brings back the IR blaster.

I will go for s7 and sell my s6........and sher with you the experience.....good luck

Interesting as I'm the other way:
I have an S6 Edge (having swapped a S6 wanting it to be less wide). I'm interested in the S7 (not edge) because it is 2.74mm wide as opposed to 2.76 on the edge and 2.78 on the S6. I use Tmobile USA so their preorder promo of Netflix and VR makes the cost of upgrading attractive.
I wish the phone had a even higher screen to body ratio (73% is my target, the LG G2 is my ideal). I also wish it was more boxy a la Note 5. I also wish they would put a soft-touch plastic back on it (a la Nexus 5).
Beyond the looks, I don't see a a major reason to upgrade. No game/app/photo/competitor phone makes my S6E seem insufficient. My Gear VR experience has me thinking of future things to add, but none of those things were added to the S7 other than better cooling

I like how they removed the chrome trim around the home button. Very stealthy on the black model. I also like the increase in RAM to 4GB. I'm going to wait for the S8.

Was there an announcement of a Samsung equivalent to Apple's 3D touch? I guess the rumors were untrue.

I think you missed the most important part of the S7 that EVERYONE here in NA should be excited about: North American version uses SNAPDRAGON 820. AOSP is back!

the major reason why the s7 is better than the s6 is that there is 4gb ram on it. it makes a difference folks. I had an edge and now an edge plus and the edge plus doesn't slow down at all. the only difference? extra gig of ram. the s7 is gonna be raved in reviews and will be revived as the best galaxy ever.

the S7 is better in every category, but still it's not worth upgrading from the S6, if you had S5 then yes for sure, or even NOTE 4......but the S6 is just fine....if i would upgrade then it will be because of the battery and new camera tech....

After having the S6 I kinda see this as a neutral aspect... I like the Exynos a lot !
Lets see how the new Exynos goes with the S820 and we'll see. For someone who is not a flashaholic, I would really recommend the S6 or any other Exynos based device without thinking twice, my phone runs perfectly.
My old Z2 with a Snapdragon 801 had a lot more issues than the S6, not to mention the speed difference!

Agreed. But actually they both look good benchmark wise, almost equal. Still prefer the EXYNOS, although this time I won't mind either, as I made an effort to get exynos in the past only even if it meant importing.

They got rid of the IR blaster for the S7? I had no idea. That's a deal breaker for me.

Wow...no IR blaster?! Who is the Dr. Evil at Samsung that decided to do this after adding water resistance and expandable storage??
No IR blaster is a deal breaker for me as well...going to stay with my S6 edge, like the size of it anyways!

Not upgrading either because of this, I use the IR blaster every day, it's so much better than trying to find the remote and it even controls air conditioning, if there is no ir blaster on the s8 I might even put off upgrading even longer maybe wait till note7. Oh and I really wished they make the back plastic and removable again too, glass just sucks (plastic>>aluminium>>glass)

Now that Samsung Galaxy S7 is here, how does it effects the scope of your Galaxy S6?
Created a thread, got locked. Didn't know about this one. So, let's continue discussion here:
Well, Samsung did pull an Apple here. The launch of S7 felt like a bloated launch of iPhone 6s series. While not much changed on the outer shell of the phone, a lot of cool stuff got introduced inside the phone.
Waterproofing - IP68
SD Card is back
Insanely improved Camera with Dual Pixel auto focus and f1.7 lens
New display with Always on tech
A beastly processor upgrade - CPU/GPU brings significant gains over 7420
3000mAh of love.
IMHO, I feel that S6 was more of a pilot version on which S7 is banking with several upgrades above it.

So, are you planning to upgrade to S7 or any worthy competitor like LG G5 or maybe even Xiaomi Mi5 (awesome VFM)? Also, given the poor tracks record of Samsung with software updates, do you think we will receive all software goodness and maybe an Always-on implementation (AMOLED, should be possible)?

Samsung always makes their previous phones buggy and leave them at a terrible state after they release a new phone. this happened to my Note 3. they released a really broken android 5.0 update and they didn't even update it to 5.1 after they released Note 4.
Now same thing is happening to Note 4 after the release of Note 5. and then again, same thing will happen to S6. They do update S6 but will leave some bugs, forcing people to pay for their "next big thing". altought 6.0 was a good update for S6 but I'm sure future updates will break some stuff.
I don't consider their new processor a new success. We do not need 8 core cpu on a phone. These lazy samsung devs put more powerful hardware on their phone because their software is not optimized enough. they should optimize their software for speed improvement instead of putting 8 core or 4gb of ram.
My PC had 4gb ram and I played lots of great games with it. now a 3gb ram is not enough for these samsung phones. why? because their software is a total mess.
I liked Snapdragon's move for going back to 4 cores. again 8 core is useless.
I'm done with this company. From now on, only Nexus.

I thought there was an IR blaster on the S7, that may just ruin the deal for me.. The one the S6 is super powerful lol. I love having an IR blaster! The ones on Samsung devices are always the best ones, then the HTC ones. LG has them but they're almost useless.
By the way, this person advertised that he's creating a product and wants people to back him up. It's an IR blaster that attaches itself to phones, seems really cool: http://www.eyekickstarter.com/

You can sell your used S6 for about 300-350€ and buy s7 for 720€. so paying ~400€ is fair, for such improvements? for 400€ you have some things better on paper but in real life... i dont think so not worth to upgrade i am staying with my s6 untill s8 i guess.

Or sell s6 and buy MI 5bpro ... 400$ (375e) for 128gb snapdragon 820 ...and snapdragon killed the new exynos. Dont be like iFools to stay loyal to the company who rapes you. 4 months for an update to theirs flagship ?? Really ...

Haha. Amen. I always plan to buy a Nexus but somehow it is always ruined for me.
Nexus 5 = Poor camera and pitiful battery life.
Nexus 6 = Huge and expensive with a really poor Amoled.
Nexus 5x = Performs poorer than Nexus 5 due to its hardware encryption.
Nexus 6P = Snapdragon 810, need i say more.

[Q] Poll: Galaxy S3 US vs. Nexus 4

The Galaxy S3 is one of the best selling smartphones of all time, is there any reason to upgrade from the S3 US to the Nexus 4? and how noticeable of an improvement would the Quad Core S4 Pro be over the Dual S4 Chip in the S3 US.

I would not upgrade, you can just wait until a 4.2 AOSP ROM for the GS3 comes out. In terms of Hardware, they are not that different: both have a quad core, a similar sized HD screen, and both are just insanely fast (I believe, at least

I have a Vibrant...yes the Samsung lost abandon phone...I was thinking next phone will only be google phone ...BUT LG kinda stunk it I think. I was willing to pay as much as iphone, but
I found it has
NO 32GB,
NO External SD,
NO removable battery
NO Glonass
NO LTE (<====? Common everything is heading toward LTE now, why? why??)
Now, I'm thinking I probably go with Samsung Galaxy S III i9305 not the i9300 (it has everything and 2GB ram)

The Nexus 4 does in fact have GLONASS support, according to this comparison.
Also, LTE was abandoned because Google didn't want to partner with carriers (especially in the US) to launch Nexus devices, considering how badly Verizon handled Galaxy Nexus updates. Google's cooperation with At&t/Verizon would have reportedly made it more financially feasible to add LTE.
I am interested to hear reviews from those going from an S3 to a Nexus 4. I feel I would prefer the S3 over the Nexus 4, the Nexus 4 is just too cheap to pass up though. I currently have a Galaxy Nexus and love it. But I have spent some time with an S3 and would rather have that over my GN.
i just played with the n4 at my local store and let me say that n4 mops the floor with it..it is amazingly fast..having a ported 4.2 aosp build for the s3 is not the same as having the orginal 4.2..****, i have a hox and the n4 blows the hox out of the water..and the good thing is, google is going to release the n4 with 32gb..no source..just have been told by a google employee
Ah things get a little more interesting when the British, Aussie, European (and so on) Galaxy S3's are thrown into the mix.
Then it's Quad Core Exynos 4412 vs Quad Core Snapdragon S4 Pro
1GB vs 2GB RAM
The mobile networks around the world are quicker to provide updates than the American 'carriers'
BATTLE OF THE TITANS!!!
Yes, especially if you have the international version which has less than stellar custom ROM support.
My Galaxy S3 is the phone that single-handedly convinced me only buy Nexus phones from now on.
So what are your thoughts, those who have went from the S3 to the Nexus 4? I am curious.

Awwww. That's messed up how they didn't release a 32GB version from the start. I'm fine with 16GB, but nothing wrong with having more storage.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
As someone who has switched to the Nexus 4 from the AT&T S3, these are my thoughts.
Cons:
- No removable storage.
- No LTE (not that big of a deal imo)
- No Removable Battery (never removed my battery, so don't care)
- Nexus 4 is made of glass, and slides off almost everything.
- Screen is less sensitive (I've frequently had to tap multiple time for it to be registered)
- Better battery life on the S3 (but I haven't had my N4 for very long)
- No hardware home button on the front (this is a nice convenience imo.)
- Better Camera on the S3
- Louder speakers on the S3 (N4 is barely audible in the shower)
Pros
- N4 feels so much better than the S3. Swiping feels superb, holding the phone feels great, and the N4 looks much better than S3.
- AOSP Out of the Box (I didn't think this would be a big deal, but I've been using the phone unrooted and wow, its like everything just works how I want it to.)
- Direct updates from Google (no more waiting on custom roms and leaks)
- Better Screen (everything looks a lot more realistic and better imo)
- Faster (everything is so smooth on the N4 and I haven't seen any lag or stutter yet as I did [rarely] on the S3. This creates a better experience.)
My experience with the Nexus 4 is that it just feels better to use than the S3. Its something you have to try for yourself I guess.

IMO the design is borderline kitsch.
The 24bit/92 Khz is totally irrelevant, since no one can hear the difference, 3200 mhA is below expectations (4 hours more is, more likely than not, BS), 3 GB RAM is standard nowadays in top of the line phones, 13 MP camera unneeded and probably detrimental to low light image quality and 4k video recording irrelevant to 99% of users since 4k TVs and monitors still cost an arm and a leg.
Oh, and moving from 5.5" to 5.7" doesn't make a difference in real life use.
As for software, thank you for bringing it to the Note II also, which I intend to keep until the note IV is released.

You said that, not Samsung. The only thing Samsung said is that the three devices you mentioned will receive an update in October that will let them support the Galaxy Gear. What's in the update is pure speculation at this point. I'd also highly doubt that Exynos Quad and 2GB of RAM will be able to run all the new multitasking features shown on the S-800/Octa 3GB N3 and Note 10.1 2014. I'm also concerned about S Pen compatibility between the "old" S Pen and the "new" S Pen they were talking about at the launch. I also wonder if the new S Note app will be backwardly compatible.
Just more to speculate about and a reason for people to open another dozen new “update” threads.
Honami here I come.

COMPLETELY WRONG. Note III is the first to implement a 3 GB RAM.

Well definately its speculation but atleast we get the 4.3 and as far as your feelings are voncetned about the note2 not being able to use the multiwindows feature shown, there was nothing new just that u can launch the same app in two windows so it comes to same as launching two diftrent app just they implemented some add feautures .
And if u are so bored of threads being updated stop your speculation too that it wont support as we are keeping are hopes positive and you are on the negative end

I think they said it will have 4 more hours of video playback not 40% better battery.
EDIT:
For me note 3 seems to be a well worthy upgrade.
Larger screen while thinner and lighter and maintaining same size.
Better camera.
Better material used (the back cover does not have the glare and fingerprint problems as the glossy plastic used in all previous phones and according to most reviews it feels better)
A little bit bigger battery
Much better screen (higher resolution, looks like the gs4 screen which received very good praise)
It will have an IR blaster? (not sure about this point, but I assume it does since gas4 has it)
Better software (that launching application in a floating box looks awesome, and they can be minimized)
It has USB 3.0? Isn't that like 10x faster transfer rate?
3gb ram and better processor (not sure if that will make a difference though in practical use)
The standard space is 32GB now, that means coupled with 64gb sd card, you will have a total of 96GB, which i enough for any person I imagine.
S-pen seems to be improved, although to be fair I was never a big s-pen user.
Only thing is missing is front speakers like the htc one, then it might have been the perfect phone.

Don't generalize, many people actually can hear the difference in audio, 3gb ATM is not a standard as many of the rumored or just announced smartphone are 2gb, the 13mpx camera is a big improvement as seen in the sgs4(one of the best android camera in a phone), and 4k recording gives you a "lossless" zoom quality plus probably 4k will become a standard in some years and early support is nice, plus it have the microusb 3.0 and best display and HW announced.
I think it's a great device, probably my next one.

Now that Samsung Galaxy S7 is here, how does it effects the scope of your Galaxy S6?

Well, Samsung did pull an Apple here. The launch of S7 felt like a bloated launch of iPhone 6s series. While not much changed on the outer shell of the phone, a lot of cool stuff got introduced inside the phone. :silly:

No, actually i'm very happy with my S6, if do upgrade this year i will go for iPhone 7 if not then next year probably to S8(i had HTC and IMO LG UI's ugly)
1. only thing IMO worth upgrading to S7
2. 32gb is more than enough for me so no need for slow SD cards
3. I have DSLR for photos, phone camera is mostly used for instagram
4. It's probably only software that enables Always on display, since both are amoled
5. S6 is already pretty fast and lag less
6. Now that is awesome
I'm happy with my S6. The S7 looks nice and I'll probably update to it in seven or eight months, but for now I'm perfectly content.
I like Edge. I wanted to buy Edge+ but when i saw it in my hand poooof it was ugly IMHO! But Edge is very nice again IMO. So i stay with S6 Edge because 5.5 inch edge it is not nice.
No ir blaster is a deal breaker. Going to wait for the note 6 and pray it has one. If not then going to wait for the s8 and once again pray it has one.

Nah, I'm waiting for new Nexus, until then I will use S6 with AOSP
I think s7 is rather targeted at s5 owners, so it is not a downgrade in ip68 and sdcard for them

Done with samsung

Had to go back to my nexus 5 due to a few drops of water screwing up my s6.... Holy god and it is actually faster than the s6. Not hard video gaming but normal tasks it blows the s6 away. ....Samsung sucks. Android n has released images and we dont even have marshmellow.....pathetic

Samsung suck I have s6 didn't like it I'll go with nexus next year the thing I love about nexus is they always get new updates and this Samsung you wait 100 years to get beta and then wait another 100 years to get official LOL
We've had official Marshmallow for days though .. So much smoother.
Agreed with you OP althought I'm still sticking with my S6 until new nexus arrives.
I returned to my nexus 5 today to see if I can flash Android N images on it and it's so much smoother and faster when it comes to app opening and animations. Of course in gaming and other similiar stuff it is worse but still, clear proof that amazing hardware doesnt mean anything if you have sh** software.
I'm gonna keep my S6 until the S8 comes out. I just can't stand on the looks of pure AOSP. I've been using the MI 3 since it came out and then devs ported/cooked an AOSP Lollipop for it. Yes it's fast and feels really clean. Don't pick me for shooting AOSP though. I liked and loved AOSP, but I grew tired it. There's nothing much to do unless you're a die-hard who customs his phone a lot which can either lead to: a.) Helpful with your everyday task, b.) Just for fun, c.) Waste a lot of time. There are a lot of phone companies here in my country who uses AOSP as their main OS. It just feels so generic nowadays. Like I said, don't get me wrong, I was once a flashaholic and loved pure/customed android.
Yeah me too. Before this (S-S5) will root after 2 months of usage. Flasholic before but after I didn't even bother to root because maybe I grew old now and s6 tw already mature enough with good performance and usability

That's what I felt too. With the MM update, I think I'm very greatly satisfied with my S6 now.
I just bought a Nexus 5x - updates mean more to me than hardware that just suck the battery when idle.....Android N convinced me that i would be waiting 18 more months to get something that I can have in 3 or 4 (or now if i want bugs). Nexus from now on for me....

Hope you get the update quickly. That's not true that number of 920i are higher than 920f. From business perspective and insight in world economic zones, I will be surprised if 920i is even 10% of 920f numbers.

I'm just hoping the new nexus or note 6 will come with a ir blaster. Really the only reason why I am sticking with my s6.

I am also thinking of dropping Samsung. I really love my S6 dual sim, but its ****ing expensive and resell value is crap compared to the price you pay for initially.
Im a light user. I dont play much games and i mostly do web browsing and youtube on my phone. So maybe the nexus is a good option.
However I always end up sticking to my S6 because i am obsessed about camera quality particularly in low-light. and the S6 excels at this ( well low light is not that good but still better than other).
My question is , how does the camera on the nexus compare to the S6 ? it would be really hard to beat.
Sorry for my bad english.
so the only thing you care about is speed? and no, the S6 with MM is faster than nexus 5....it's faster than all android devices excluding the 6p....so please...if you're angry because you missed up you S6 don't blame samsung.....the nexus 5 is below midrange phone......crap camera, battery, design, screen.....
Well galaxy s7 edge is pure junk it still lags I saw mate8 and nexus 6p they don't even blink on multitasking and mate8 Is older than s7...just wait next nexus they will beat Samsung soon they will take over
Android N isn't out yet. It's at a alpha stage. Officially it will be out at the end of the year. Wait for MM and your s6 will be awesome. I know, because i have both (also 5X) phones.

TBH i have always been on Samsung for last few years. Initially with Note 2 more than 3 years and then now using S6 since launch. Sometimes i do feel lag but cant really make out as i hardly used CM on note 2 due to S-Pen features.
Just 2 days back i played mate 8 as its widely available here in China. I do have to say that the device was fluid fast and it was already on MM which i dont know when i will get it on my S6 G9200. I was mighty impressed with how the apps were could be open and app switching was fast even on the browser. Except on apps which refresh everytime you open all the other apps opened instantly where it was at the last state. Just the device was too big at 6" but i have to admit the device was damn fast. I think my device might be a nice Chinese Company since i live in China and its easier to get so might be Mi5 or Huawei product which are anyways half the price of Samsung flagships.
I'm keeping my s6 until it breaks only because I can't afford new phones very often, but my next one is definitely going to be a Nexus. **** TouchWiz, **** samsungs inability to update phones quickly. still waiting for MM on my s6 g920i

From S6 to S8. Is it worth the upgrade?

Hey guys.
I have the Galaxy S6 and I'm wondering if it is worth to upgrade from S6 to S8.
I've been using the S6 for quite some time, and now they launched Android Nougat (7.0) to the Galaxy S6, which I am currently using the official version.
But, I am wondering if I should upgrade to the Galaxy S8 (Non Plus) variant.
I'm in love with s8's screen.
If you can, please post a "reason" why I should or not be upgrading.
Thanks!

Better SOC, better graphics, better screen, more ram, more memory 64gb, sd card, better battery, better camera front and back, usb C, better performance overall......BUT if you didn't see all this already and you're still in doubt, might be that it doesn't worth the upgrade for you.
I did this. Battery almost 2x, Speed great, too.

Same here. Switched from S6 Edge. It is a major upgrade in every way, just like OP said. No regrets.

As the title says I upgraded from the s6 edge and let me tell you it is worth the upgrade! :good:
Not least of all the S8 is waterproof, having paid £250 to repair a water damaged s6 edge last year i think its worth upgrading for this reason alone.
I like the fact the finger print scanner is on the back - it never made sense to me that it was on the front in the first place.
Face unlocker is fast to react.
And I am just chumping at the bit to get a DEX like dock (however at this point not willing to pay £110 for it).
Interesting comments.
I am really tempted into upgrading it. Since my S6 sometimes struggle when I'm scrolling on Chrome or Facebook, and I'm too far down.
I think it is time for that upgrade!
Is the battery really enough? I mean.. 3000 mAH on the S8.

Battery life has been a mixed bag for me - I'm not quite seeing as good a result as I've seen many post but it's likely due to varying conditions. It definitely gets better life than my S6 - I wouldn't make it to Noon with that and I start my day, off the charger at 430am. With the S8, I get through the entire day, no problem but might need a hit from the fast charger if I do some browsing after dinner...

Well you can upgrade but i recommend waiting for another phone with the same SOC...
My dad bought the S8 and is pretty meh...Narrow design, same screen as the s6 just bigger and slightly higher res which makes it looks strange...camera is the same as an S6 on good light conditions and slightly better on dark conditions...Figerprint positioning is absurd...Battery is not that good...SOC is newer but you wont notice any difference unless you try hard...And the price is way too high for whats is worth...
I dont want to start a new thread but i am wondering the same but i am coming from a oneplus one.. again is their any bonus in upgrading.. and how is development for samsung devices
i went from s6 edge + to s8. Very happy so far. the form factor fits better in the hand, software is fine. I like the back being glass. good feel overall.
A BIG YES. I upgrade from a s7 edge and to me it was so worth it
If you like the S6 and want to stay with Samsung, I'd say yes. Otherwise, I'd say wait until more info is available on the Google Pixel 2.
It's such a large upgrade from the S6 it's silly to even have to talk about all the reasons why. For comparison, the S8+ made the S7 Edge seem very dated. There is no comparison, unless you like old, slow phones with far inferior displays, memory size, camera..... I could go on. Not even in the same ballpark. By far the best phone made to date - S8/S8+. That changes every 6 months or so with a new phone taking the crown, but right now this is the top dog.
Agree, S8&S8+ are top-of-the-foodchain!
How are the lags on the S8? Because on the S6 when I'm scrolling in chrome or facebook I get lags. Usual android thing. That's what making me wonder if I should wait iphone 8 or get the galaxy s8. Btw, I don't plan going to Google Pixel 2 because I like the Samsung devices. I've always had Samsung phones. Tried Nexus once but I'm not a fan of stock android.
Upgraded today to the Grey/silver version from S6.
Ordered awesome spigen case too.
Role on Friday.

Zero lag in anything I have done on my S8+. Smoothest, fastest phone I have ever used.
I went from s6 Edge to S8. I think it's worth it. The battery is much better. Bigger screen, not as wide so easier to hold. It's pretty better all around. If you got nougat on your s6 then the software experience will not feel drastically different. Haven't really tested the camera head to head yet.

I have to disagree with you on a few points:
"far inferior displays" - Just because the S8 has a more futuristic look with its smaller bezels and increased height over the S6 I don't see it being fair to consider the S6 to be far inferior. The S6 featured an incredible screen at its time, and compared to alot of flagships out there it still is an amazing screen anno 2017! (pixeldensity is still better on the S6 vs the S8 by the way)
"memory size" - Just because the S8 features 1GB more, it does not mean that you actually use it. Just because it looks better on paper does not make it essential in daily usage. 4GB future proof? Yes! Absolutely necessary at this moment? Probably not.
"camera" - If you are talking about the front facing camera, then yes probably you are right. The rear camera however is only marginaly improved over the S6.
Don't get me wrong, I agree with you that the S8 beats the S6 in all of those points, but I think its actual difference in daily usage is to be argued whether the TS needs to upgrade or not
From S6 Edge to S8 is a perfect upgrade at all levels. I gave S6 to dad and I am using S8
