Turn Your Old Android Into A Chromecast - Repurposing Old Devices

Turn Your Old Android Into A Chromecast
A Chromecast isn't the most expensive device in the world, but if you've got an extra Android device lying around, I would recommend saving the $25 and using it as a Chromecast. This can easily be done with just a few modifications. I'll show you how to get everything setup.
Things you'll need:
1. HDMI Cable
Most Android devices within the last few years will have an MHL compatible Micro-USB port. This means that you can get an adapter to plug your phone into an HDMI cord. You can pick up one of the adapters on Amazon for next to nothing.
Micro-USB to HDMI Adapter
2. Unwind Launcher for TV BETA
You'll want to install a launcher on the device that you'll be plugging into your TV. Unwind Launcher is my favorite and it's designed to be used on a big screen. Download this from the Play store and install it on your Android. It's free!

3. Tablet Remote
Tablet remote is an app that you'll install on the device plugged into the TV and on your everyday Android phone. This will let you use your phone as a remote to navigate your makeshift Chromecast device.
Download Tablet Remote
Once you've got everything that you need, you'll just plug in your phone to your TV and pair your two Android phones so you can use the remote feature. That's it! Now you have a fully functional Android TV device.

I've been trying to figure out how to do this except as a media (audio) receiver to use as a bluetooth dongle for use with auxiliary jack.

Great, care to show us how? Cause that's not evenly remotely linked to what you did here.
Using something like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/har...p-youmap-chromecast-receiver-android-t3161851
or this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/hardware-hacking/chromecast/app-cast-receiver-app-android-t2900726
might work (and these should work in the background along with the launcher you suggested here, meaning you get both a GUI on the TV and the ability to cast)

I had never heard of tablet remote but there's quite a few other options. I use droidmote. It's paid but I think it works best with android tv.
Agree with other posters. This isn't a fully functional chromecast. I was thinking I could cast my computer to the TV. This seems to just mimic an android tv box except you don't have a dedicated remote and most will need to buy the usb to hdmi adapter (if there old phone is compatible.)
BTW--I don't have much of an interest in this but why not use leanback launcher? Wouldn't that be better if you are trying to turn it into android tv?

Very true. I have 6 androids....not a single damn one has mhl support

I have an acer a500 tab and moto atrix hd, both having a dedicated micro-hdmi port. unfortunately tablet remote gave error-1 on both devices when I tried to setup the connection.

Some androids use slimport instead of mhl

You are right! I'm looking for chromecast-ish app for android phone. Does anyone knows something like that? I know, there is Cheap Cast but that program isn't available in google play shop and I'm not sure if it is safe.

CheapCast is no more available in Google Play but it is available here on XDA, the fact is i don't know if it still works since some users reported that it doesn't anymore, you gotta try it by yourself and, if you can, report back to its thread to help others.

I have an older Motorola Electrify M (XT901) with all the USCC stock firmware (still locked bootloader without root). It has JB Android 4.1 and a 1080p HDMI Port.
With that stated, will this this phone be able to be Chromecast repurposed?
Just wondering as to any restrictions to this.
I never bothered to try and unlock/root it since it was stored for quite some time when I upgraded to Samsung.
It still works like a charm!
Thanks!

My Atrix hd now has become android TV with kodi installed and connected to the TV by the micro hdmi port. Kodi has a remote app called kore which you can install on other phone and control it from there.

Has any one found a way to convert an old Android phone with HDMI output to become a Chromecast receiver?
I just want to press the Chromecast button of my PC browser and watch the videos on the TV. I do not want any menus nor apps on the TV/phone. I just need the phone to become a "dongle".

@DrGreenway, I also have an older Motorola Electrify that's still a quality device with an HDMI port.
It was upgraded years ago to a newer device and hasn't been in service for quite some time. It still works like a charm.
So I'd like to re-purpose this device for Chromecast...
Can it be done on this specific device?
Thanks a Bunch!
Peace and Love!

Gamepad for Official 3.1

guys what gamepad is currently working for your 3.1 acer iconia?, i tried 2 gamepads already but both of them did'nt work
ps3 controller and a generic usb gamepad
no ones using any gamepad here?
Actually this topic have been there before...
What I know is xbox360 pad work, even sony play station dual shock 2 also work
And ps3 pads that use dongles seem to work as well. No luck with official ps3 pads

i've been using a saitek cyborg gamepad, its got a usb dongle as well as a ps2 dongle on it.... works great with pc, ps2, and ps3... aaaand now my a500 love it
Hey, sorry for not reporting a controller that will work. So far I don't have one that is seen by the Iconia. I've tried a couple different wired generic usb controllers and a wireless Xbox controller with the usb adapter.
I would like to save someone the trouble of buying a usb wireless adapter for a wireless Xbox controller specifically for their A500. I've tried one, and the dongle powers up and appears to be functional, the controller won't sync to it. Works great on the pc and I highly recommend one for that.
Maybe someday, but it doesn't seem to work for now.

as a matter of fact, people should check out this thread from the past weekend, various controllers seem to be tested as well.

i know that my madcatz ps3 sf4 fightpad and 360 wireless controller with dongle does work. my ps3 controllers (sixaxis and ds3) would charge and when plugged in would not power on my ps3 or work with it.

Got any tips? Do I need to goto the settings on the A500 and do something or should it connect without any interaction on the tablet? I've been trying for 15 minutes or so and I don't get anything but rotating lights on the controller.
This is the adapter that I am trying to use. It is the official Xbox branded one.

out of curiosity, in snesoid and nesoid when i go to set any buttons other than depad i get an <unknown> when i press any buttons.... for whatever reason the dpad works fine, and in another snes emulator my gamepad works fine i can use all the buttons no problem as well in playstation emulators. Did you have any sort of weird issues like this when setting yours up?
Dang. I wish Tiger Arcade scaled correctly with Honeycomb. All Metal Slugs and tons of great fighting games would rock with a controller (duh).
Tiger Arcade scales fine on Froyo tablets but not Honeycomb. Just a tiny window.

"External" gamepads with Shield

Hi there,
let me explain my goal. I want to use my shield for all my PC gaming. Portable around the house, and that is great when the main TV is being used by other members of my family.
But also it's great to connect it to the TV when it's available. My main PC is a desktop one used for working and when I play I don't want to be there. I prefer sofa, bed, etc.
So, I wanted to have a fine console experience in my sofa in front of the tv, but wirelessly. I have these accesories for it:

USB OTG, HDMI, USB hub, USB-ethernet (the one that actually works is this: http://plugable.com/products/usb2-e1000 ), and wireless Xbox controller with the usb receiver.
Well,
I almost have it, but not 100%.
HDMI works
Ethernet works
USB hub works
Xbox controller works but D-pad does not, and that is frustrating, because every other button works fine and it's a joy to lie in my sofa to play that way. Some games need the D-pad and because of that this is not a solution.
The other way to use the Xbox controller is leaving it connected to the PC and it works good when I'm in front od the TV because my PC is just upstairs. BUT, most of the games when launched from Shield ignore the controller of the PC and only work with the Shield itself...
Is anyone crazy enough to try this way of gaming?
I know the Nyko dock would help to achieve this, but it's completely missing since it was announced...
Would a bluetooth gamepad work with all the buttons (D-pad included) for a perfect PC streaming experience???
Tomorrow I friend will let my try a PS3 controller. Let's see how it performs. I did not want to root, but I will at least to try it wirelessly.

I use an OnLive controller. I haven't tried the XBox 360 Wireless dongle, but Bluetooth works great. If you're looking for a controller that has similar build quality and characteristics, I strongly recommend the OnLive one, even without the service (I don't have the service, just the control).
I'll give the dpad a try this weekend and verify it works on my SHIELD though, since I haven't tested that extensively.

Thanks for answering.
Yesterday I tried a PS3 controllorer. I rooted my shield to use it wirelessly with the sixaxis app, and it works exactly the same as the Xbox controller. All the buttons are OK, except D-PAD ones.
It's weird, beacues the D-pad buttons work fine in the shield interface but not with PC-Steam games. It's a very small detail but if Nvidia solves this in future update would be perfect.

I didn't try streaming (I handle only the Android side of things) but I'll make sure a bug exists about it. I'll bet it'll get fixed pretty quick.
Same issue here!
I am having the EXACT same issue! Everything works perfectly except for the d-pad. I've also noticed that the right analog stick does not work like a "mouse" on the home screen like the native controller does.
If these 2 items would be fixed, I would have a veritable portable "steam machine" in my living room!
Will follow this thread and hope there is a resolution soon! I bought the Xbox 360 Receiver for this express purpose! Note: The wired 360 controller works perfectly, so was surprised about the wireless one not working.
The wired one is special, but I'd expect thus stuff to get fixed. I'll try to look into it.

What do you mean it does not work?
PC receiver for Xbox controller works fine with the shield.
You can see my setup in the picture above and it works the same as a wired one.
You need the controller receiver:
http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Windows/dp/B000HZFCT2
And a true Xbox 360 wireless controller:
http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wireless-Controller-Glossy-Black/dp/B003ZSP0WW/ref=pd_sim_vg_1
If you root your shield, the PS3 controller is a good choice too. Less cables involved because you will be using bluetooth to pair with the shield.
But as we said, it's not a perfect experience. Many PC modern games use D-Pad buttons for extra options and without them you can't play properly.
I think you're being too literal on "not working" there King Conan. Read his post, he's having the same issue with lack of d-pad on the wireless. He considers this to be not working probably because of games that require the controls. I would have to agree, I use d-pad all the time.
but he says the wired works and the wireless don't...
Both work exactly the same, that's why I didn't get him.
It's not just the wireless with the d-pad problem, wired is the same way?
Yes D-PAD problem happens wired or wireless.
The funny thing is that DPAD works fine in Android interface but doesn't in PC steam games.
Gotcha, sorry. I read the entire thread but for whatever reason I took away the problem was exclusive to wireless.
Hopefully they fix it in the next update, I just ordered a micro-HDMI cable and USB OTG adapter ;/
The wired and wireless ones report currently to Android at the low level.

What you mean exactly by replicate? Every button and stick funcion can be remapped.
I don't have an xbox controller but I imagine that the kernel has the gamepad modules so if you are rooted it should work. If you are not rooted this is also possible but I would need a data capture so I can include it on the next release.

Is it pre-rooted? Thinking about getting a stick to use with my AppRadio 3 and the app needs root access.
Also, can it get power off the USB port? Since I would be installing it in a car with one 12v power port, a DC only power supply would be a problem.

Check your power adapter that's the first thing to try.

I'm thinking of buying an android stick to watch tv on kodi. Can you tell me how good this one is for that?
Something else, after googling a bit I still can't find the price anywhere, how much does it cost?

Can you please see if this stick will work in portrait mode ? I'm working on a home arcade and would like to use android for a digital pinball game instead of windows. Most of the boxes / sticks I've looked at won't work but I've read that rooted ones will display in portrait mode. Thanks for any help

Hi you should be able to set portrait mode on any tv stick/box as long as your rooted by just Changing the ro.sf.fakerotation to false and ro.sf.hwrotation to 180 and after the reboot, its should be on Portrait you can use a build prop Editer like this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.apps.build.prop.editor&hl=en
Any RK3288 tv stick/box is easy to root with a root update zip and also any amlogic s802 is also easy to root the same way
OK so is there one that's idiot proof cause I really dont wanna screw it up.

So, you were able to replace the voice search button by context menu access? If yes, can you explain how? Many thanks

I guess I'll have to find a compatible replacement that has all the funtions (media and context buttons) that the stock remote doesn't, altough mine was for free (shield + remote bundle), it's just too limited, a simple context menu access button would make the remote much better...

The Amazon Fire Stick remote works perfect for that. It's only $15 from Amazon.

All buttons on the Amazon Fire Stick work on shield, is there a voice operated version you can buy separately?
Is this it: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Replacement...&qid=1453067606&sr=1-1&keywords=amazon+remote ?
I don't know if this Minix Neo A2 Lite (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lite-Wirele...438176?hash=item1eaa0476e0:g:t-sAAOSwpRRWmFjX) works on shield, but if it does, I would rather buy one instead, the only problem is that they seem to be more compatible with full android than with android tv...

I've read about Kodi Jarvis 16.0, the problem is that I need to backup (export) my kodi library to a micro sd card or an external hdd before I update / uninstall the current version of kodi... Any idea how to do this? I get an error saying that the destination of the backup is not writable.

Oh that's what you meant? Yes, all the buttons work great on the Shield, including the context menu button! I hate the Shield remote, it needs as many buttons as the Amazon Fire TV remote. Nvidia got too cheap on their remote.

I think numeric keypad would also be useful. As I have an harmony and an universal IR receiver Flirc I simply added another device that has much more buttons to configure and made proper assignments. I was using this device in my previous media center. With the keypad I can shortcut to movies starting by a given letter, for example if I click "2" two time I go to movies startin with B. In a big library this is quite useful. I don't know why they go cheap on these remotes with only a couple of buttons.
I accidentally (I bought it for an MK802IV android tv stick I have on other tv) found a 5 usd remote that also works on shield, it feels kinda cheap (because it really is ) but all buttons work, even the mouse and power buttons, it's powered by 2 triple A batteries, I tested it on shield with the remote's usb receiver plugged to the micro usb port in the back of the shield using an otg connector .
Here's the link if anyone's interested:

That's cool! Can you post a picture of how it's connected? So it won't work unless you use an OTG cable?

It also works connected to any of the "normal" sized usb ports, but they're being used by two 4tb external hdd's, so I connected it to the micro usb port instead, I also could've used a powered usb hub, my d-link dub-h7 works fine on shield, I guess I was just too lazy to do so . Remote size, when compared to the stock remote, is not very different, just a lot thicker (as expected, since the stock remote is really very thin), on top of the photo you can see the otg connector ("normal" size usb female to micro usb male) and the usb receiver that comes with the 5usd remote. I should mention that I only tried it on kodi, es explorer and shield menus, not sure how it does on other apps.

I just noticed that it's missing a PLAY/PAUSE button. Too bad, I use that a lot.
Agree, I wish the OEM remote wasn't so thin. It's ridiculous. I'd rather have a thicker remote that feels good in the hand and I don't have to charge as much because the battery is so tiny.

I've been searching a lot about this but, I'm yet to find a remote that's compatible with shield, is powered with batteries (that way you don't have to charge it all the time), has proper media control buttons on front, a decent keyboard on the back and can connect via bluetooth / wifi without the need of a usb receiver
MeLE F10 BT, connects via 4.0 bluetooth, is powered by 2 triple A batteries, but is missing media buttons...
MeLE F10 Deluxe version has media buttons, but needs a usb receiver to work and is powered by an internal battery...
The major problem is that, besides not finding what I want, I have no way to know if it's compatible with shield untill I actually buy and test it myself...

MHL makes a return??

I was a huge fan of MHL in the S5 so when that went in S7 i was really annoyed. But after watching DeX working on the S8, surely this operates using MHL?? I cant see anything released about this but i cant imagine Samsung reinventing the wheel when they can return to MHL and have half the DeX work done for them.
I used my S5 at work as a portable computer via the MHL adapter but with the S7 i could only use Miracast to get my phone screen on my home TV. It was a serious set back and i hope to god its returned!
Can anyone confirm MHL is back????
Simple USB-C to HDMI cable should be all you need from what I have read.
Looks like i should have done some reading up on the USB C specs. This Alt Mode looks good. I did wonder how they added a ethernet port to the DeX when the S8 only had a USB port but this Alt Mode in the specs allows for it Its a killer for MHL though. I better sell my MHL adapter before USB C becomes the norm!
So, assuming this is true, what are the odds of someone coming up with a way to get the dex OS running without a dock? I seem to remember being able to do this on my Motorola Atrix, the OG smartphone/computer.

Hard to say. Ive been looking in the system dump for the DeX apps but if they are there im yet to find them. Im pretty sure the dock will issue a command for the phone to go in to a certain mode otherwise any cable will launch DeX which some people probably wont want. For example, i sometimes used MHL to stream football on my phone which then mirrored to my TV. I wouldnt want DeX popping up all the time! Also, the dock has a fan to keep the phone cool. DeX might not launch if it cant get an rpm signal from the fan. Or maybe it wont launch unless its also charging which a standalone cable wont provide. The dock might have a chip which the app then authenticates with stopping it launching without the chip. Who knows! If i find anything i will pop it on a fresh thread
I just plugged my Continuum dock into my TV (Sony Bravia) and plugged my S8+ into the dock. I got a mirrored screen when in portrait mode and was able to get fullscreen Netflix in landscape mode. So Continuum does not trigger Dex functionality, but it can be used. I think something to try (for those that have a Dex dock) is to plug it into a system with USB-C and run USB explorer on it to see what devices it exposes. That should answer the question as to whether it's HW or SW. Hopefully Samsung is playing nice and not using some proprietary signal negotiation between the dock and the phone.

Samsung play nice? Im sure Samsung will have something thats going to force you to pay hundreds for a glorified cable! I remember how the S7 had software which blocked you using PS controllers. The nougat update reversed it luckily but that proves they try something to get you buy their add-ons. Thats how Apple make their money so Samsung want to do it too

If it is a USB device hiding in the dock, then I'd be interested in trying to use an Arduino to spoof the ID to see if that would be good enough. There are several projects out there that can do exactly that.

Worked perfectly for Dex or just screen mirroring? If you got the Dex screen without a Dex dock, I'm sure everyone here would love to know more specifics about the cable.

I don't have the Dex screen without Dex I was saying i could use Dex if my S8 didn't work with HDMI to USB Type C. I wanted to watch my videos on my TV and in mid April I didn't see anything about the S8 being able to support MHL. But all I did was hook my S8 to my HDMI to USB C cable and my phone said hdmi connected than my display came up on my TV. I was so happy, I didn't have to go into any settings or nothing!!!!!
