Low light quality isn't that bad.
Expectations need to be in check though.

Poor video recording compared to Moto Droid?

I've done a whole battery of video recording comparisons with my Moto an HTC droids. My main findings are thus:
1. Moto video is much smoother and the light balancing is also sm oother. I find that the Incredible videos are very jumpy and the light brightness also shifts very ruggedly. It is mildly better when I record at the 640x480 instead of 800x480.
2. The video data rates are nearly twice as large on the Moto droid (approx 3600kbps) than the incredible (approx 2000kbps)
3. Audio bit rates are significantly better on the Moto. 98kbps vs 12kbps for the Incredible.
Now, am I just crazy, or has anyone else noticed this? I mean, I almost get sick just watching the jumpy video for the incredible, but video from the Moto seems so smooth.
Sent from my ADR6300 using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
no way. the moto droid noise level is so high when recording.
I'm really having a hard time appreciating much of a difference in noise levels. What about the jumpiness I am speaking of? Trust me, I want to believe that the Incredible is better, but I'm just not seeing it. Audio is hands down better on the Moto. Maybe I can link some sample videos later if I get time.

I wonder if HTC has some work to do here. I even saw the moto droid vs DI picture article online.
I have both, so I did an informal test, and the DI has some color cast, but it has more detail to work with in Adobe CS.
I also noticed that it's not sharpening like it should. For those in the DSLR realm, take a raw file.... you have to sharpen it or basically "post process" it for sharpening.
I don't want to take these steps, hopefully HTC will step up here. Get the function down in the phone and you will have much better pics than anything out there in it's class
Good points, and I agree that photos give more detail to work with, but I'm speaking soley about the video quality.

Check out this link for a good video comparison. Seems I'm not just going crazy, but that the Motorola actually does record video better than the Incredible. What a shame.
When looking at the video, take note of how the vehicles driving by are "jerky". I can't understand why this is the case when the Incredible supposedly records at a higher frame rate. Does anyone know if this kind of thing can be addressed in a future software update??

720p
I believe that the Moto Driod does DVD Quality 720p HD in its specs, where our phone MAY have the hardware capability, but the software has not been configured that way. Hopefully when we're rooted, and someone created a custom rom, that will be fixed

Pictures

How bout we start a picture thread.. I know the camera is getting knocked in the reviews I have read.. and since using moto phones in the past with sub-par cameras I have actually been fairly impressed with the camera.
Both of these were using HDR mode.

The camera is really trash.... I have the HD and i'm getting ready to return it. Great battery life tho
The camer on the RAZR HD is better than last year's RAZR, but still not great. Has issues with auto white balance, making colors look unnatural depending on the lighting. Also, the flash isn't bright enough.
I have no complaints. This camera is MILES better than my X2. Motion shots are very impressive, and while it's not DSLR quality, it will certainly look decent for the majority of people.
Remember, it's a phone with a camera, not a camera with a phone...

Indoor pix not so good...
I have to say that picture quality is downright poor indoors. White balance is way off and there is no way to adjust it or tinker with ISO or other values. Sharpness, color reproduction and saturation are worse than on my Gnex
I currently own a HTC One X and the comparison to the RAZR HD is quite striking. I rate the ONE X as an above average shooter and the RAZR HD as very disappointing for an end of 2012 device. I am wondering whether it´s hardware or software holding it back so badly.
So far I don't have any complaints.

I will have to politely disagree with you on the comparison to the GNex.. that camera was only good in optimal situations...
here are a couple indoor shots one HDR and one just automatic.. HDR is the first one (although that should be quite obvious) These are the full image no forum resizing or anything else done
I will say that HTC normally has better camera performance and since I am verizon I never got the chance to play with the One X phone.. I am not saying that the camera is awesome and blows me away (I wish it did...) but I am also not overly disappointed with it.. I would love to have my Motorola phone with android and the iPhone camera.... but alas I cannot.. :crying:
Engadget seems to like it, CNET doesnt. All phones are a toss up. My One X could take some beautiful pictures, while it can also take some terrible ones. Im sure some of it is operator error.

Well with the one X you get a fully-featured camera app with a bevy of options to improve results. With Moto´s app there is nigh on nothing to adjust, not even white balance.
I am wondering: As JB should be around the corner...does Moto have a history of improving cameras with software updates?
You can check out the pics I took here:
http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Motorola-DROID-RAZR-HD-Review_id3157/page/3
They are better than last years RAZR, but still have white balance issue causing inaccurate colors. The Flash is also a joke.
I wonder how well third party apps would fair with the white balancing issues.

Ive notice that the stock camera app is defaulted to "widescreen 6mp" mode.
With these two pictures its 8mp, HDR mode on.
Not bad, im not used to the lack of oversaturation I was used to on the One X, but I think for a phone that lasts me 2 days without charging, the camera will do. 95% of my photos only end up on facebook and nothing else anyway. It's a dark morning here today as some storms are rolling in right now.
Distance photos are kind of dissapointing though :=/
Thanks for the heads-up.
Recently some C-Level person from Motorola stated that the new "Google" Phones will come out in 2013.
I will hold out until then. There is too much compromise involved this year.
Theres always going to be better phones in 4-6 months. This time next year that Motorola google phone will be bested by the Razr Maxx 4K HD with 4GB of ram, 4000mah battery and a pentacore processor. Its an endless cycle.

That's not what I meant although the truism of yours is of course valid. What I meant is that this years offerings are mere holiday season stop gaps and not really idiosyncratic of what Moto has been in the past or what they can be. Traces of that pedigree are all over the hd and hd maxx but it's not the real deal especially considering the price points in most territories.

I suppose, I don't see Motorola coming out with anything better in the next two months though. Maybe a quad core partially budget phone like the atrix HD but nothing ground breaking. Just imho.

It worries me that there is such a gap between the razr M and the HD. My gf wants a phone that has a good front camera, and only the HD has a 1.3m up front. Her Droid 3 has a 0.3, same as the M. But she doesn't want a mammoth of a phone, and she needs it to be built like a Moto.
Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk 2
I would have chosen the DROID M if it wasnt for the fact that its not an HD screen, and was more towards a 4.5" screen at least.

Well, this is what I about expected from a Moto camera. I have seen in the right conditions and lighting pretty good shots with it, but as a 2 phone guy, this is why I will be carrying my Nokia 928 with me for photos and Moto for ecosystem and Google services. I heard most of these inadequacies can be improved upon with SW updates. We will see.

Gotta love the Lumia cameras. Gosh I miss my 920. It was so easy to take nice shots with that phone and every phone I've had since hasn't even come close.
The camera on this and the new droids quite honestly sucks. I don't think anyone is surprised, but you would think if they were going for an "iphone" like market, they would have put a little more emphasis on the shooter. the artifacts in low light pics are plain awful:crying:
Was seriously considering this to move from the N4, but not anymore. Every single review that has posted pics just don't look good at all.
I love moto, just wish they would step their camera game up a notch and not just throw around terms like clearpixel...it clearly doesn't help.
I am interested in seeing real world shots that ppl get with it though---sometimes they differ from the review photos.
Happy Shooting Moto X folks

Well if you were planning to get the MotoX mainly for its camera, then you obviously will be disappointed. It's not leading edge right from the start, but a simple software update to tweak how it adjusts and balances the light can easily improve the quality a bit. I always view cellphone cams as means to create passable photos.

Yeah I'm not looking for a DSLR, but at least match the quality of the current flagships. They are a couple Gens behind with this cam (or so it appears). The S3 took better pics. My N4 is in the same boat...crappy cam, I've been looking for that vanilla phone with a good cam...Doesn't look like its gonna happen, might have to go back to the old root n rom method.
The Sony Honami could change that though.
Anyhow, still want to see the real world pics from the X...couple more days til we get a few samples.

Here's a quick comparison shot between the MotoX & Samsung Galaxy S4. These shots were taken about 30 seconds apart and have no post processing done other than resizing each to a width of 640 pixels. The one on the left is from the Moto X and the one on the right is from the Galaxy S4.
I haven't tested the Moto X in low light or any challenging conditions.
Initial thoughts:
- The one from the GS4 os a much more accurate colour rendition of the actual scene.
- The one from the Moto X has a purplish cast to the picture (see the colour of the sky).
- There is a lot more detail in the picture taken by the GS4.

Exactly..Like I said...this camera is generations behind the current top shooters. Its a shame, and there's really no excuse other than being ignorant and disconnected from what customers want. They even hyped the camera with this ClearPixel nonsense - please dont hype a horrible camera. I would have DEF bought this phone had it contained a good camera.
BAH
Eager to see some more shots, but they could have done WAAY better with this.

There are issues but I'm not sure whether they are due to the sensor or the processing done on the resultant image. The former would be a huge issue, while the latter is something that could be addressed via a software update.

wow, S4 makes the X look like a joke.

Performance of audio in video recordings in loud environments?

So since i'm still on the fence Moto X Pure / Nexus 5X (maybe LG G4, Xperia Z5):
I couldn't find any sample videos of concerts or clubs, does anyone have hands-on experience with this?
My N4 is bad at this, the 5X doesn't seem to perform much better either, while i could record myself drumming nearly without distortion with the Moto X 2013.
i got to concerts/shows 3-4 times a week and have been impressed with videos ive taken... they sound wayyyy better than they did with my galaxy S5... not sure if ive filmed anything with my moto camera and saved but i believe i saved some snapchats... ill see if i can upload a sample to dropbox for you...give me a little bit
Edit: that's really weird. i had never played my snaps i saved before and when i went to play them they wouldn't play(guessing bc the stock video player doesn't play mp4's?)...downloaded vlc and rebooted and all my snaps were deleted(folder doesn't even appear anymore) o_0... im going to a show saturday so i'll take some video with the camera and post if you would like/can wait till then
Of course, that would be great.
Not a lot of reasons why i prefer the 5X (one is the camera, still images are a bit better and Moto won't give us RAW ) - so that would be another + on my list.
I'll upload samples tomorrow night!
