Is it possible to get 128GB flash drive working as internal storage in marshmallow? I formatted my pny 128GB flashdrive to fat32 using diskpart and when I try to format it in nexus player to use as internal storage, it quits after around 5 mins saying that it couldn't format the drive. I currently have a 16gb driver as internal storage and it's running out of space. Also I'm using a USB hub with a otg cable if that helps. Any help would be appreciated.

I am using an old 250gb sata HDD via a hub with eithernet and it works. Esfilemanager will sometimes crash it requiring a hard reboot to reactivate it but do far so good.
Did you format it in Android so that you can use it as internal storage? I can plug it in as removable storage but can't use it as internal storage.
Make sure you partition as FAT 32 and Master Boot Record instead of GUID Partition or Apple Partition Mac, just to make sure. And remember that FAT 32 won't handle files larger than 4GB, so keep that in mind. If you have the need to use larger than 4GB files you can format the drive to NTFS on Mac using the Tuxera driver or any other third party NTFS driver; Android does read NTFS partitions.

I formatted it as fat 32 and MBR using partitionwizard and still having the same issue. Does anybody have any other suggestions that can fix this?
I formatted my 128gb usb stick to a NTFS files system in a windows machine and then as "internal" in the Nexus Player.
I tried with a 16gb flash drive and 1tb USB hard drive and was able to use any as internal storage. As a matter of fact, the 1tb drive had 3 partitions and the Nexus wiped them for or good and used the entire tera as internal storage.

If I try to format as a general USB storage it works, and my key become a 64GB external storage in FAT32 (but useless for me, I have to store big files > 4GB ...). So i want to use it as an internal storage.
Any ideas why the internal storage format option goes into error ?

I have exactly the same problem.
Perhaps it depends on the flash drive model ? Does people getting it working can share their flash drive model ? (I don't want to buy 50 flash drive before I can expand the internal storage ... )

There is no need as both Andriod and WM6.x can see Fat/Fat32, which I presume your SD card is formatted.
If you want to separate your media from any programs you want to install on the sd card just use a different folder.
Plugging your SD card into you TP2 is the same as plugging it into your desktop / laptop whatever the OS.
Would you partition a SD card that was plugged into your desktop ?
If you want to partition the SD, try it and let us know... however i think that it will appear as 2 storage cards in explorer.

I know exactly where you're comin' from, man. After I get a 16GB class 6 microSDHC, I intend to partition ~8.5GB as NTFS ('cause I'd like the the max capacity to hold a full DVD DL disk) to handle larger file transfers btwn desk/laptops. And, I'd still have a whoppin' ~7.5GB to be used by the tele as FAT32...'just haven't made that microSDHC purchase yet, but I'd imagine it to be plausible.

I remember some time ago on Aximsite or another older related site reading how to format NTFS and use a Compact Flash card on Windows Mobile. I did it on my Axim and Ipaq at the time, and kind of remember it working.

I know. However, if there're two partitions, NTFS @ ~8.5GB and FAT32 @ ~7.5GB, then I'd imagine that Windows would see the storage card as two drives, while Windows Mobile would see the 16GB, storage card as ~7.5GB. Anyone, please, do correct me if I'm wrong in my assumption.
This has made me wonder, too. Why does WM refer to "Storage Card 1" occasionally when inserting/unplugging memory cards...? It kinda implies that there is room for multiple cards at the same time...????

i partitioned my 16 gig hard drive and installed linksys on one partition so i can plug into my computer and dual boot from my phone...
i dont really see a reason to create multiple partitions to have the same function as folders (ie seperating media from doc, ext...)

You would not gain anything by formatting NTFS other than the ability to set NTFS permissions in Windows. A movie can be stored on a FAT/FAT32 partition with no ill affect on usability. Also, when you purchase any type of storage, the actual formatted size is usually smaller than the advertised size. So if you buy a 16GB card, you will most likely end up with around 15GB max of usable space. I would not plan on having 7.5GB of free space after creating a 8.5GB partition.

No, you'd also be able to support files larger than 2GB. And, I know it wouldn't be 7.5GB, that's why I'd said about (~). Prob more like 6.8GB, or so.

I know NTFS doesn't work on Windows Mobile. However, I would assume that if you were to make two partitions, one NTFS, and the other FAT32, the Windows Mobile device would show the FAT32 partition, while a Windows dsktp would show the microSDHC as two partitions, NTFS and FAT32. I've ordered a 16GB microSDHC Class 6, and I'll post my results after I receive, partition and format the card.
Okay. So've received my 16GB microSDHC Class 6, and have partitioned and formatted with Paragon Partition Manager Pro v9.0, and have...
Partition 1 - microSDHC N, 8.61GB NTFS
Partition 2 - microSDHC, 6.24GB FAT32
The device sees the FAT32 partition, as intended. Windows (Vista), however, shows only the 1st partition (NTFS) of the microSD, even when using the device in Disk Drive USB mode. Disk Management sees the FAT32 partition, but no matter what options I select, I'm met with

in the start search bar type computer managment then go to storage/disk management select the disk and then right click and change letter.
thats supposed to let you change the letter i have to deal with this alot at work with all the network drives and my externals

I'd tried this believing that Windows only needed to assign a drive letter, but to no avail. :\
Hello. There is one thing that doesn't really work well by me: if I plug the phone (usb) and choose the mobile archive function, windows 7 detects 2 thing:
- space volume of 12 GB (the phone?)
- MICROSD32 (the name i used when i formatted it), which is 32 GB
The problem is that not the whole microsd is mounted: from the file browser on the phone, I can see that the micro sd is there, and then there is a folder named 'external_sd', and THAT folder is the folder that is been mounted on windows.
This doesn't allow me to read/write data files on the sd (application files, savegames, and so on)....because it doesn't mount that part of the micro sd.
Is there a way to fix this? I am always forced to copy/cut/paste things from the phone file browser...to get to the micro sd root...
And BTW i have root access now. if that can make a difference with this.
I just noticed that I am wrong, and BOTH volumes belong to the same micro sd....the mobile storage 12GB is the root of the microsd, while the other 32 GB volume....is also the microsd....but the external-sd folder....why this partitioning?????
external_sd is where your 32 giga micro sd should be mounted, if you're browsing from the phone.
You should have checked the option 'usb debugging ' in menu/applications/development'. Then connect the phone to pc and you should see the both internal and external storage.

Also browsing from the phone, the mircrosd (sdcard) has an internal folder named 'external_sd'....weird.
Maybe I should reformat the card from the phone? I formatted from the computer before putting it in the phone...but it was completely empty.

i have similar problem where cwm thinks my external sd card is the inter al sd card when backing up etc. dunno what to do.

I was excited to get my Shield TV with a high speed 256 GB Patriot Supersonic Rage 2 USB stick. At first, I could neither format as external storage or adoptable. I was able to format the drive just fine as FAT32 on a Linux PC and it can read/write to it as external storage. But even then, it takes forever trying to format as adoptable Storage, then says it could not format, rendering the drive useless. So I delete the partitions on PC and format as external on the Shield. Success! So I repeat the partitions deletion and try adoptable again. No love What gives? The drive works great as external storage but I cannot format it as adoptable for the life of me. Please help

I saw a comment about creating 2 different partitions on it as I want to use part of it for app storage and the other part for file storage, The second partition would be exFAT so I can remove the card and transfer my books, music, etc. to it by attaching the SD card to my laptop as I understand that Windows would not be able to recognize the partition that would be formatted as internal storage. I did format the SD card using my laptop as two separate partitions. My Samsung Galaxy Tab A saw both partitions. I selected the 96GB partition as I wanted to use that for app storage and selected the option to use it as internal storage. Unfortunately when I did that, it appears that the system set the whole CD card up for internal storage. Does anyone have any insight on how to accomplish this - use part of the SD card for internal storage and part of it for storage that would be recognizable by Windows? Thank you very much.

After creating a bulk partition in android, move the SD to Windows and resize that partition, and create a second partition on the remaining capacity and hide it.
Now move the SD back to android and see what happens.
If android will reformat the partitions again then I can't advise anything else.
However, if android accepts the memory, then the next step is to discover the partition in Windows and recheck the SD in android.

Well, I was trying to work on that and now the Android Storage module (in Settings) keeps crashing when I open it. IDK what happened here. I've reformatted the SD card, I've removed the SD card, I've rebooted the table multiple times. I'm almost to the point of having to restore the tablet from scratch ... again.

You're trying to convert a partition in sd card as internal storage and leave the rest as an external storage. Not possible as far as I know.

Thats a bummer but that is what I was feeling was going to be the outcome. I guess I'll just go with it as internal storage then and be rlefated to wireless transfer of my books, etc. To the tablet. Any thoughts on why my Storage module keeps crashing now? Something definitely went nuts somewhere along the way here. It was running fine.. until I start poking around with this. I'll probably just do a rebuild again tonight.. if I can find my steps notes.

The reason people want a micro SD card is to be able to move it around between devices, so it is not a good idea to convert it into 'internal storage' for two reasons:
1. You can no longer move the card around (not without reformatting it again).
2. This process would significantly slow down the system if the OS starts saving apps, data and files on the micro SD card because it sees this space as internal storage.
Because of how you partitioned the SD card and tried converting only a part of it as internal storage, my guess is the process caused corruption somewhere, and the system is crashing because of that. I'm afraid you'll have to do a factory reset and start from scratch. I hope your files are safe.

You should NEVER use an SD card for internal storage. They are MUCH to slow for that purpose. Today's SoC have RAM chips mounted directly on top and are several times faster than the fastest SD card bus. And low end tablets, which includes ALL Tab A devices, use a USB bus with limited bandwidth. So using faster SD cards is pointless as they will still only be as fast as the bus. SD cards are fine for storing video, audio, text and downloaded files, but NOT for running apps. Doing so will cause the device to be laggy at best, and cause crashes at worst.

The two partitions on the USB flash drive can be seen* in Windows without third-party software.
*I don't have an English Windows interface.

Windows 10 mounts both of these partitions, assigns them letters and you can use them (read and write).

Something strange in that attachment. Since when do Android SD cards have NTFS partitions? As far as I know, the internal storage partitions that Windows couldn't read were formated as Ext3 or Ext4 and the external as either FAT32 or exFAT.

Don't suggest the volume label. Partition K: is FAT. The example shows that Windows can show two partitions on a USB stick.

Of course it can. It can show several. But NOT the two partitions created on an Android SD card because one of then is formated in a file system Windows doesn't recognize and that is what the poster was talking about.
edit: Disk Manager will actually show the partition but it won't be assigned a drive letter because Windows can't mount it.
