Android for Work compatibility? - Zenfone 2 Laser Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've done quite a bit of searching, and input every search term I can think of, but haven't been able to find an answer to this question: Does anyone know if the Zenfone 2 Laser ze551kl supports Work Profiles for Android for Work?
*EDIT* -- I figured out a way that people can test to see if their phone natively supports Work Profiles (required for Android for Work using Google's MDM): Test DPC, Google's profile test app for developers. If you (or anyone else reading this) is able, could you download Test DPC on your ze551kl and at least go through the initial steps in setup? If the phone doesn't support Work Profiles it will through up a message saying as much (tested the app on an s4, which got that error message) in the first few steps of the setup.
All more general searches I do only bring up results for the recent firmware update that added support to the ze551ml (not the ze551kl). When I narrow the search enough to exclude that model from the results, I only get results for lists of articles or queries that have separate, unrelated posts for ze551kl and Android for Work.
It's too bad all manufacture's don't just include support for the Work Profile (i.e., the AT&T S4 I currently use issued as a work phone still doesn't support it).
So -- does anyone know the answer to this question? I'd really appreciate it.

Its got the ability to have different user profiles, but I'm not sure if that's what you're referring to. Is it an app or would it be in the settings menu somewhere?

It's a bit different than user profiles, but similar.
http://arstechnica.com/information-...r-work-dual-persona-support-comes-to-android/
It essentially creates a containerized section on the phone for Google Apps for Work. You end up with "two" hangouts, gmail, contacts, etc (which is nice, because it removes the account from switching account options in apps -- like when you share to Hangouts and it makes you select an account everytime if you have more than one). Instead of the work accounts device policy enabling it to see all apps installed on phone, have permissions to remote wipe, the Work Profile makes it so that the work account device policy can only see information in the Work Profile, and only has permissions to remote wipe the work profile.
I currently use Android for Work on my Moto X Pure 2014, and carry a separate s4 issued by work. I'd like to just put both of those sims into one phone, but I need something decent, that supports data on both sims (data connection active on both at same time not required), that also supports Android for Work.

Gotcha, I don't really see any Android for work options anywhere in mine, is there anything you had to download from the Play Store on your Moto X to get it working?

Unfortunately it's only something you can verify if you start setting up a Google apps account that can use it. Otherwise it doesn't show up anywhere.
I really appreciate you digging around for it though.

Unfortunately, we have an answer. Maybe there's hope they'll add support with the Android M update?

We can only hope. Really appreciate you taking the time to test it!
Still trying to figure out if all devices on Marshmallow (whether launched with it, or updated to it) include support for Work Profile. Seems like that's the case, but having a hard time finding a definitive answer.

That would be awesome if 6.0 supports Android for work natively, at this point it probably should.

[APP] Quiet Time for ICS - Please help me test my first App

Hey everyone. When upgrading to ICS broke my favorite app, I decided to try to make my own.
The app is supposed to monitor your calendars and automatically put your phone on silent during events/meetings/classes.
I would love it if anyone would be willing to try/test my app and let me know if you find any bugs or have any suggestions.
And if any more experienced (than me) developers would be willing to take a look at the source code and tell me how I am stupid and should do things some other way that would be even better.
Thanks for looking,
William

I just fixed two bugs and updated the apk in the first post and on the android market.
If you are actually planning to use the app, you really should get it in the market so I can push updates/bug fixes to you.
What a great app! Thank you very much!
It would be great if you could select different ringer modes for different calendars. So I could eg. have the phone muted when I'm at work and on vibrate when I'm at school.

Thinking about this more. How would you expect it to handle double bookings?
If at this moment you were supposed to be in a meeting at work as well as a lecture at school, which mode should the phone be in? Obviously it would depend on which on you were going to play hookie on. But the app obviously can't know that.
The way the app polls for events now it would be controlled by which ever one started first, and if they started at the same time, it would be random/which ever event the android OS decided to give a lower event_id. Would that feel broken?

Would it be possible to give some calendars priority over others? Or perhaps a possibility to prioritize a ringer mode over the other (eg. always use silent mode over vibrate, or vice versa).
Great idea, but you must have the do not copy feature turned on inn the market for this app. If you turn it off I will be glad to test as well.

I just checked, I do not have copy protection enabled. Why would that give you trouble anyway? The app is free on the market, why would you need to copy it?
If it is just not letting you install, are you on an Ice Cream Sandwich ROM? Your signature makes me think not. This app uses the calendar API which was introduced with ICS so it will not work on older ROMs.

If you have copy protection turned on and someone is running a custom ROM, I am, then they cannot download your app. I've had to update my only pay app with market licensing and remove the copy protection.
I'm currently running CM 7.2.

If you had not figured it out, that's why you can't install the app; CM7 is based on Gingerbread. To use this app you would need to upgrade to CM9 or some other ICS based rom.
Thanks for the update, it's great!

Sprint's new emergency alert system on any 4.1 NS4G roms

I was playing around with some different aosp roms the other day and I thought since the new emergency alert system Sprint was so kind to give us in the 4.1.1 ota update is such a great new feature to have maybe I should try to get it to work on a rom other than the OTA. Well, it turns out it 'just works' by default!! The app will not install the traditional way, but if you copy it to /system/app and change permissions to rw-r--r-- it works! FEMA wow, no way is this coming near my phone, eff that
YAY! Now I can be informed via Klaxon that rain sometimes causes flash floods. If you use this, keep your phone on mute or people in theaters and conference rooms will hate you. Personal embarrassing experience talking here.
I would be okay with it if you could shut off the alarm. Trust me, it's nothing like any other notifications else that exist on your phone. I want to know about Amber Alerts, and very severe weather events, but this appears to be all or nothing. Imagine the chaos if everyone had this on their phones and they all went off at once, which I assume must be the intent. Talk about shouting fire in a crowded theater. Not well thought out, but neither is FEMA.
for the record this was on an epic 4g touch, i assume the same behavior on anything else unless the federal govt is building device specific apps

did you not see the screenshots I posted?? There are toggles for different types of alerts. And you can turn notifications off, as well as test notifications. Also, if you don't like your alarm notification, just change it. We live in a world where rooted phones are possible and you can do these things It's as easy as swapping ogg files!
no, actually i did not, thank you for calling my attention to them. apparently pictures get cut out when i access xda from behind a firewall, literally looks like there's nothing there on pc, but tapatalk on my ns4g has them. Maybe they are getting it right, I will have to take another look at it. When I found it on my nonrooted e4gt, it looked nothing like this.

Great rom.
I tried playing around with it and for some reason it wont work.
Idk i really want to have this feature but for some reason i cant figure it out.
Lets just review.
I move the apk to /system/apps.
Then fix permissions to rw--r--r.
Reboot
Fix permissions in cwm.
Reboot check settings?
Is there something im missing?
Try accessing it from Messaging app. Hit settings.
If I can find some time this afternoon I will flash RBJ and see if I can figure out what's up
I will also look into it also but not for myself, lol. I hate the alerts.
This works on today's port off rasbeanjelly for ns4g by rustyjay. I used root explorer to move the apk to system/app, changed permissions to rw-r--r--, and rebooted. No need to go to cwm.

HoRNDIS: USB tethering driver for Mac OS X

Hi!
I spent the last week or so working on a project that I call HoRNDIS (pronounce: "horrendous") -- a Mac OS X driver that allows you to use your Android phone's native USB tethering mode.
It's a kernel extension, and requires NO software installed on your phone, and NO background apps on your Mac; if your phone supports RNDIS tethering, you're good to go! To make you salivate a little more, it looks like this when it's running:
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_download": "Download",

}
I've tested it on my machines, and a few of my friends have tested it on their machines, but it hasn't gotten *hugely* wide testing yet, which is why I'm still tagging it as a [BETA].
If you're interested, give it a shot... you can grab it from my web site, and if you're so inclined, get the source on GitHub, too.
Let me know if it works for you!

This is awesome!
This works great on my VZW GS3. Seems more stable than wi-fi tethering. Easy to set up. Been looking for something like this for a while.
Hey, this works great! I've tried hundreds of tips for my SGS and none worked until this one. Thank you very much.
I have one question, though. I'd like to tether my phone WIFI connection to my Mac (not only the 3G connection). Is it possible with this kernel extension? I tried but it didn't work with the Wifi, only with 3G.
I don't know if this is not possible at all, even on Windows, or anything else.

Fantastic. Works great on my Samsung Galaxy SII HD LTE (E120S).
i'm going to try this!! you are the man!!! thanks!!
Confirmed Working
On Sammy Galaxy S2 Skyrocket on CM10 (stable & latest nightly) and OSX 10.7.5.
If it doesn't work at first. Make sure you reboot your Mac and then give it time to connect with your Android.
Thanks for this! I hate using bluetooth for anything and I have found that hotspot really makes this particular phone get really hot. Should help out with that since it is not transmitting via Wi-FI hotspot, saving my components within the phone!
Thanks!
Works flawlessly with the Nexus 4 on the Three network (DC-HSDPA+). Received 8Mb/s d/l vs 1.2 Mb/s up. Very happy.
Hm..
Ive got a Desire HD running a port of CM10
Macbook Pro with Lion (and i doubt this is causing problems, but i have a linux partition that i installed a tonne of wireless drivers on to get it to work XD )
Anyhow, when my phone is plugged in, nothing pops up in settings or anything, i installed the Rel1 package and installed it a second time as it wasn't working. It still isn't working though :L
Also, i have the interface, 'Android Phone' alongside bluetooth, wifi etc.. but it doesn't have a data transfer icon, but a telephone icon?
Do you think this is due to port (CM10), my OS X version, or somehow connected to Linux (im not really sure how it could be, but I'm just putting it as I did have to spend a long time setting up wireless on it, and may have somehow messed up something on mac)
Thanks for the words of encouragement, everyone! I'm glad to hear that this is useful to people.

Good to hear it works for you! I'm thinking that for this I'll take a similar policy to what I did in the days of the unrevoked project; if you found this software useful, you might want to consider donating to an organization that's been fighting for years to make it possible to do this kind of work: the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Can you try HoRNDIS-n1-test.pkg? I think that this is a similar issue to what I saw on a CM9 n1; that should fix things up for you. If that doesn't, can you file a bug in the issue tracker so I can help figure out what's going on here?

Additionally, it doesn't require an 'emulation' IP stack on the phone side, so performance and compatibility may end up slightly better.
anyone know of a free sms agent?
New version should support CyanogenMod phones better (if it wasn't detecting your phone, try again), and properly complain on 32-bit kernel systems; I think this is stable enough to no longer be [BETA] (Mods, feel free to remove the [BETA] from the subject). Thanks for all the kind words from everyone.

[Q] No group MMS thread setting...

Wondering if anyone else is having this problem. I got my Nexus 4 (Yeah!), started it up, logged into my google acct, everything started downloading/restoring from google. I checked out the Messaging app and settings, and noticed a "group messages" setting. Sweet!!! But then I got a system update notification. I obviously installed it. After installing it, I used gobackup pro to restore my messaging threads. NOT THE APP, just the threads. Checking the settings again, the "group messages" setting was gone! Just gone! Not sure if it was the system update, or the thread restore, but I am perplexed. I've done 2 factory resets since, but the setting is still gone. Messaging ver. is 4.2-57622 or something like that (don't have the phone with me at the moment.) I'm guessing it had to do with the system update, and that is why it's still not there after the factory resets, but, I really have no idea. I am stock, no root, or unlocked bootloader. Stock, pure stock (the reason I bought a nexus device). Any help or related info would be greatly appreciated! I've searched everywhere, and seem to be the only one with this issue. Any screenshots of anyone else's messaging settings running that app version would help too. Thanks
Hmm, I've done the OTA update and I've still got the setting.

Same here. The OP's problem is very peculiar. OP, what cell provider are you using? I doubt this is it, but is it possible that this option isn't available on certain cell providers and Google removed it in the OTA? That is, could it be dependent on the SIM that's in your phone? I doubt it, but I'm just trying to identify some variables. I'm on T-Mobile and have the option.

You may be right, cause I am only on wifi right now. The phone is a Christmas gift, so I am only messing with it to make sure that I like it, and don't want to return it. So it would make sense that not all carriers support this type of messaging, and wouldn't show until your phone recognizes a supportive carrier. Like you said, it may not be the case, but the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. The only variable is that the setting was available pre OTA, but disappeared after the OTA.
Nexus 4 here using Tmobile. Group MMS option removed after OTA update..what is going on here this needs to be fixed
I'm not sure why this isn't getting more exposure... Fixing the group messaging was a huge step and now it appears to be broken for some.

Ok, here's the deal. I have a N4 running 4.2.
Everything was working great up until today as far as group messaging. I switched from ATT to T-Mobile last night. Now the option appears to be gone, and it's not working anymore. Is this something specific to T-Mobile's network? Do I have the wrong MMS APN settings or something?
For T-Mobile, check the APN settings.

I am still seeing this issue but on a Galaxy Nexus.. I had the group mms option on 4.2 and it worked great.. I hadn't used group mms since I got the 4.2.1 OTA update the other day but I just did and back to separate threads and the option is gone like the OP.. any ideas? I know this is a thread about the Nexus 4 but this is the only thread I could find on this issue..
I'm still on WiFi only, so I'm not sure if mine will work or not once I have a sim. I'll update my status after Christmas

Anyone got a solution? I'm on 4.2.1 on AT&T and I don't have this option.
I'm waiting till I actually get a Sim in my phone to continue this thread. It seems to come and go based on different carriers and APN'S. I will update in a few days.

Are you talking about the option to "use MMS to send a single message when there are multiple recipients"? I'm on SIMPLE Mobile (t-mobile's network) and i have the option. FWIW.
I'm having this issue still on a galaxy nexus on 4.2.1 on tmobile. As far as I know I never had the option, even in 4.2.
Ive tried wipung and reflashing multiple different roms, and even flashed a modded apk with no success at getting the option to show.
OK, so to put this topic to bed. I just got my phone setup with att, and the group messaging is back! :thumbup:It must be carrier dependent. Anyone having the issue should go tho their carrier and see if they support group messaging, and see if they can help you set it up.

I'm on 4.2.1 on a galaxy nexus with T-Mobile, no setting. My brother is on a nexus 4, same network, he has the setting. So it is not just a case of carrier dependency.
Are you guys talking about this setting?

[APP][ROOT] Scheduler for Whatsapp v2.1

ROOT PERMISSION NEEDED, 4.1 or above
Hello everyone, some days back I was searching an app to program some whatsapp messages, and I found 1 or 2 apps, but are so hard to use and takes so much time so, I made this app thinking that to create a new messages not takes a lot of time.
The app is very easy to use, you only need to pick your contact, write the message and select when you want to send the message. Take care, because the app is a BETA version for now, but I need some feedback on other phones, obviusly, you need ROOT PERMISSIONS.

Yes mate, for now is only compatible from 5.0 and above, but when it works okey in 5.0 I will make it compatible with below versions, anyway thanks for try the app
Edit: The app works okey from 4.0 and above I think, but not works always. The problem is that this app needs to reconect from internet to force whatsapp to update the messages and I can only do that from 5.0 (using internet data, not wifi).
Version 1.21, compatibility from Jelly Bean
In this new version must work from android 4.1, but take care, if at the moment to send the message you are not connected to wifi, the message will be delayed. I will fix this problem as soon as possible.
Regards!

case 1: i have data enabled and i connect to wifi without disabling data.
case 2: i have data connection disabled and i am connected to wifi only.
case 3: i haven't subscribed to a data plan, only wifi is available & connected to.
will this app work in such scenarios? or, is a running data connectivity a must? please clarify.
and, please make this facility available for sending msgs to groups also. thank you.

Thanks for this questions are very interesting.
I gonna explain the conditions, are very easy:
If you are connected to WIFI, the app turn off the wifi and reconect again in 5 seconds.
If the WIFI is off then turn off data and reconect in 5 seconds.
I think with this two conditions I maneged the comun scenarios.
I will work to add group messages.
You have any other idea to add to app?
Thanks!
Version 2.0
Hi, I'm here again, I uploaded a new version to google play solving the most popular error.
- Now if you have not the sqlite3 file, the app will automatically add it to your xbin folder.
- New design.
- Solved problem with some country phone number.
- Now you can modify manually the phone number.
If you see any error contact with me please.
Thanks!

I need some testers, some people is reporting that not works :S, but I don't know why...
New version
I found the main error with the sqlite3 file, so now must be working on all rooted phones, I hope.
Is very important to download the new version if before was not working.
Thanks.
UI interface looks nice.. Got FC on selecting contact, so haven't really got to test actual scheduled message. Running CM13 on LG G3.. Good luck with your app
