Looking to add a bluetooth radio for hands free calling to my old Chevy. Thought it would be cool if it did other stuff, Maps especially.
I find myself being drawn to the D766a by Xtrons. Planning to purchase a backup camera also. I have a few questions.
1: Is this a good option? Are there better units for comparable cost? ($339)
2: How Is the app compatibility? Will I be able to use Waze? Would this require a data dongle?
3: How do data dongles work? Monthly cost? One time cost?
Software and modification support is better on the rk3188 units. I would recommend you look on Amazon for either the Pumpkin or Naviskauto single DIN. I looked at the Xtrons and it had a few drawbacks. I think the only advantage was the higher res screen. One big deciding factor for me was ease of rooting the rk3188. Also the 3188 units support Bluetooth OBD, not sure if the Xtrons does.

Thank you so much for the helpful reply!
Like this one?
I had seen these, but was leaning towards the Xtron due to the better screen. If XDA stands behind the pumpkin, that really helps make the decision!
It looks like this does not come with an external mic?
Lastly, I still dont understand how the 3g dongles work... I assume I need a service contract? Id love an EL5... (Explain like I am 5)
I asked about the Xtrons here before I bought the Naviskauto, and got no response. The rk3188 based radios have much better support.
No external mic is true. I haven't had any issues with the internal one on this model. There is a hardware mod you can do for external that I presume would be similar on the single DIN, but you have to be willing to do small part soldering which I'm not.
3g would require its own line with your cell co and a SIM card. For me it was a better choice to get an LTE hotspot from my provider which I keep plugged in in the car. That way I just use the built-in WiFi on the radio which auto connects to the hotspot.

Thank you! I ordered one of the RK3188 flip up units on EBay for only $279. From my understanding the external mic just required the adapter from RCA to the universal headphone style plug? My truck has enough road noise, I felt an external mic was important. I'll let you know if it works.
My phone is rooted and can create a hotspot, I was considering the 3g dongle to avoid data overage charges. Thank you for the info!
Super excited to get this installed.
I have the Pumpkin RK3188 based flip-up unit and am generally satisfied. People that I call on the handsfree tell me that the quality isn't great due to the internal microphone. My vehicle is a noisy Sprinter cargo van. The supplied nav program works well and requires no internet connection. I use my cell as a hotspot to provide on-road internet

Looking at this unit as well for its single DIN and hide-a-way screen, how's it running now? Im looking at possibly Oenon's deck as they have 2yr warranty and costs less vs Pumpkin's. Is the faster core worth the lower resolution?
I too have a noisy truck (Volvo semi truck) so i guess i'll also have to do some kind of external microphone mod? I still have a mic from past deck, is there a way to do it with external line in?
lol this is pretty darn cool jumping from smartphones to now car decks!
I know this is an older thread, but I am playing catchup.
My 2009 Toyota Avalon has a weird non standard audio form factor, but I know people who have installed 7" flip up screens and they are good fit. (Specifically the Pioneer single din flip ups.)
I am drawn to the "universal" android style and have read some good threads on the Eonon GA1312 and it looks to be similar to the Pumpkin discussed here.
Is that still the commendation from those who are using them, or have they been super ended by something better?
Thanks!
Hi folks, I'm looking for a head unit with the following requirements as well as nice-to-haves that I don't think exists; with that said I very much would like input on the following -
Musts:
Intel Sofia-based unit
Double Din
2GB RAM
Android 6 or 7
Physical volume knob
Backup camera support (RCA or preferably digital?)
While I know the above units exist as Joying, Pumpkin, and others make these, I'd also like the following:
Nice-to-haves:
DVD player
Dashcam support (RCA or preferably digital/USB - has anyone made a real app for this yet?)
RCA and/or HDMI video output for rear screen(s)
re: screen size, I don't really care if it's 7", 6.95", or even 6.5"; if the rest of the list could be found with a 6.2" screen I guess I would probably do it...
Anyway - I can't find anything that combines the two lists, or even two of the three nice-to-haves: as far as I can tell Joying's double-din units don't have DVD or video out, Pumpkin's units have video out but no DVD player or real digital dashcam support, etc. I could live without the DVD player if the other two wants were satisfied.
I'd prefer to get the most unit for the dollars spend here at the end of 8/2017 - any thoughts on how I can best satisfy my needs and wants?
Moreover, is there a definitive list of the different HU models and their features? This seems like a real gap to me; would be happy to help create a matrix of models and features if one doesn't already exist.
Thanks!

The brand doesn't matter, they all are basically the same.
All implement your first list, NONE implement your second.
You can work around the limitation by using (1) external DVD player, (2) I saw somewhere where someone set up a dashcam recorder using a raspberry pi and integrated it with the head unit over wifi. (3) if you are using an external dvd player, you can plug your back seat screens directly into it.

Mind me asking why this is a must? I'm more of less curious since there doesn't really seem to be that much of an advantage. The platform is at the end of the road. There won't be more of these Intel chips coming in the future.

Again, I am curious of your interest in a DVD player these days. The risk of failure is so great and there are so many alternatives to using spinning media that this doesn't really seem to make sense in 2017.
What do you actually need from a dashcam perspective? Stand alone units offer more performance and better options. Also, do you really want your head unit responsible for something that could make or break your evidence of a traffic issue?
Some joying units that have DVD players also have video out. The newer units with Intel and digital amps also support output via rca. None have HDMI out.

Curious to know why you think that "the platform is at the end of the road" is of any relevance. Its still a better chip than what any other car radios have in them.
Or is this just a bandwagon thing?
Until we see car radios with qualcomm SoC's in them, this chip is still the best we have available.
https://www.intrinsyc.com/vertical-development-platforms/s820am-v2-automotive-development-platform/
But for $3300..... that's a pretty steep price for a half decent car radio.

I'm really just curious as to the specific preference for a CPU when in most cases the brand or maker is more or less insignificant.
The Intel part has some issues (like the others), but due to its obscurity and limited life there is also a much more limited interest in extending it's usefulness by the community.
Since you, ibdroid, are not the OP... perhaps the OP can let us know why they have specific interest.
Ownice c500 universal has everything on your lists except DVD player. As stated here there aren't any I've found that do.

Hi guys, fair points. I suppose when I said requirement I was leaning towards the Intel architecture because I saw indications it was more powerful, and I'd like to future proof whatever unit I get as much as possible.
Re: DVD, also fair point; it would be strictly to satisfy media for my kids but in all honesty so long as I can decode .mkvs and mp4s etc on the unit that would work great - I just want to have aux video out for a flip-down screen or something as well.
So what's out there worth owning that has the following? I saw that HDMI out was pretty rare...:
Double Din
2GB RAM
Android 6 or 7
Physical volume knob
Backup camera support (RCA or preferably digital?)
HDMI out preferred? (RCA out ok)
Rootable
The Ownice C500 looks nice (and I like the idea of TPMS etc) but doesn't have any video out so far as I can tell? Will do some more research myself.

The brand and maker is very important. Budget chinese brands cut corners, resulting in very poor performance and instability (means crashing a lot). The budget chinese brands also don't provide documentation or source code (GPL), which *is* provided by the bigger brands like Intel and Qualcomm.

I don't know what you mean by "extending its usefulness by the community". Its a CPU. The community doesn't have the ability to alter the design and run a changed version through a FAB. It is what it is. It makes no difference if the platform iterates into a new better thing, because such advancements cannot be applied to existing hardware -- its already burned in silicon.
You know exactly what I mean. There is only you and a couple of other people working on fixes for this platform. How far have you gotten? You just like to be contrarian.
What the hell are you talking about?

It doesn't have HDMI, but it has outputs for 2x external video. You need to buy the option for them to enable it though and its convoluted process on how you do that. Best just send them a message on AliExpress on what you want.

So idk if you know about this SBC, called rock64, basically made to a cheap, yet powerful and versatile HTPC, just check out their site, have basic andriod laptops for $100, just google pine64
My issue is that everyone, or everything I read on most of these cheaper Android head units, is that the DACs suck. Not to mention more specifically in my 97 M3 sedan, I'm limited to a single din solution unless I wanted to do A LOT of chopping (Heater core is right there, and would require way too much effort). So basically my only choice is the joying, and looking at what I get for the price, it just seems not worth it at all. I currently have an older pre 09-10ish Sony Xplod single din that was 50x4. I run all amped speakers/sub anyway, and have just been using RCA to aux for audio input. This is getting extremely dated, and I keep going through these rca-3.5mm cables damaging them in various ways. So what I plan on doing is recessing my existing single din, or in anyonelses case, using a cheap 50 single din as a base. and just creating a pivot point that sticks out of my dash, to attatch a 7-9" (Depending on what you want to go with) HDMI touchscreen display, 7" for Capacitive, or anything else resistive touch from buy display ; and running any custom auto orientated Android rom. End result would be ghetto rigged single din joying. Anythoughts on this? Or should I spread my cheeks for joying?
TL;DR : I'm bad at english, want to build onto an existing headunit with a cheap touchscreen and SBC that has Andriod preinstalled

If you try to use an SBC, you need an AMP chip, you need a radio chip, you need a (USB) GPS solution.
Then you need to somehow modify the Android kernel, or some system app, that controls the android part versus the hardware part (amp and radio).
It's a big challenge.
Search this forum. There are more people who did this. Also have a look at the Carjoying forum where a developer is doing this for a HiKey960 board which is, from his point of view, much more suitable for this than any other SBC. Note that it is an extremely long thread also dealing with modifying partitions, custom rooting the Joying Sofia 3GR unit, etc.
There are also "intermediate" solutions connecting a tablet via usb/bluetooth to a "simple" radio.
I have a 2007 GMC Yukon XL Denali with the premium BOSE system, factory NAV, XM, and rear flip down screen. What is most important to me is retaining BOSE, being able to use the factory backup cam, and being able to utilize the rear screen so my son can watch a DVD or video files I load on a USB/SD card. I believe with a couple of adapters, it can work if the unit supports it.
I have scoured the internet for weeks now trying to learn what I can about the cheap Chinese units. I understand there are just a few producers and 100's of resellers but all this stuff is still new and confusing . I am considering the Hizpo 7.1 unit(Android 7.1 Lollipop OS, CPU: Rockchip PX3 Cortex A9 Quad Core 1.6GHz, Nand Memory: 16GB, RAM: DDR3 2GB), amazon number B077SBX8CG. I believe these are MTCD_GS units. I want to be able to get the most out of this thing and am not afraid of using custom roms. What I don't want to do is get one that no one is modding. Is there much aftermarket support for this unit?
The hardest things to find out for me have been:
1. Can my son watch a video in the back while I have navigation running on the front screen? I think use of the RSE requires Metra GMRSAV adapter but not sure.
2. Can the unit feed my factory backup cam? I think it would require the Metra BackupCam adapter.
I would appreciate any thoughts you guys do have. I have no Android preference, just want something that runs smooth, and can be tweaked. Thanks
Anyone?
Anyone have any thoughts?

I have the same SUV. My HU is my own from a business venture where I went to China, met ODMs, and had a nice plan that simply didn't work out. The problems I get frustrated with are:
(a) Bluetooth voice quality. There is no comparison to Parrot although Xtrons new 8.0 units use (company acquired by Motorola but I forget the name). So make sure you ask WHO makes the BT. (Note: external microphones never are an improvement from my testing)
(b) Boot time. More apps = more waiting.
(c) Brightness at night is something I constantly have to manually adjust...auto is not auto.
(d) External amps are a waste - will not be worth it. The DAC sucks in these chipsets. Internal amp sound will be sufficient.
(e) Rockchip is better than Allwinner - and the old Intel Sofia units have the most customization from what I can gather.
So if I were to buy another unit I'd look at Xtrons, Pumpkin, Eonon, Joying, Ownice, and maybe LinksWell when they come out with a compatible or generic HU (they are the only one on this list with a US office.)
Also, you will need to customize a dash install kit - easy to find but I had to Dremel mine down to fit nicely. These units are slightly larger than Japanese standard size.

Thanks for the insight! I believe these are GS units so exactly the same as the Xtrons. Hard to get details on the web but will know everything when it arrives on Saturday. I bought with Amazon Prime so if anything is not to my liking, back it goes for a free return!
Lets hope its one that folks have modded before. Since I have yet to find a video of this unit in my vehicle addressing my specific camera and screen questions, I will try and do a solid review of the unit and post it here for folks.
Thanks

That should have a Ralink BC8 for bluetooth 3.0 (maybe 4.0) in which case your handsfree should be fine. They have 1.5-3.0V output on RCAs which is terrible but I'll keep my fingers crossed for you as this is standard output power for any Chinese Android HU.

Good to know! I don’t plan on running any external amps. My loud music days are over so I guess not too concerned about the RCA’s ?
Looks like it is a PX3, 7.1.2, MTCE_XRC_V2.75_1
Hooked it up after a lot of guess work because you know...no instructions. I have a low level hiss which is annoying, each turn of the volume knob gives a audible "thump" even when there is no audio playing, the unit doesn't fit in my vehicle unless the wifi antenna is NOT plugged in, and I can't seem to get BT audio to play.
I didn't have a ton of time to play today but I will tomorrow. Not sure if I have some interference with the wires in the back or if this is just par for the course and I need to return it and re-order a different unit until I get one that works the way I want it to.
I konw the title of this thread is a bit general, but I've read a few threads here and now I'm even more confused than before
First of all, hello to everyone here, I've been a reader of this forum for a while, but now I've decided to register, mostly because I need help with the matter in the thread title; I'm absolutely new to Android HUs and everyone I ask has a different opinion. My previous sound system consisted of a Pioneer DEH80PRS HU, Audison LRx 4.300 amp, Helix Deep Blue 12" sub in factory sealed box, and a pair of Audison 5x7 front speakers; the HU was an overkill for the rest of the system, but I got it from a friend that had somewhat of an SQ setup and I've heard what this HU is capable of. Now, I bought a new(er) car, 2007 Kia Ceed (better than my ex 1999 Mazda 323 Sedan), and the HU is 2DIN. I've thought about putting the Pioneer in (as I'm more than happy with its capabilities) but it would look somewhat small and silly in this interior. And if I'm going the 2DIN route I might as well go with an Android HU, for its versatility and let's be open about this, price (compared to brand name solutions). And that's where my problems start.
Since I'm new to the whole market there currently seems to be a wave of DSP units, but I've read through the DSP unit thread and there seems to be no good enough reason for me to buy any of these "DSP" units as the benefits are not that big; the sound control is an ok thing (also mangeable via an app), but everyone seems to talk about how louder it is - I don't really need loudness, I'd like to have something with a good integrated amp that gives out a good signal, it doesn't have to be at a level of my previous HU, but I'd really like it to be above the factory HU (which surprised me with its sound capabilities, but I guess that's because my 2007 car has the newest factory sound system I've had). Also, I noticed quite some people talk about sub outputs not working on some of these HUs, I'd really like to have that working so I could connect the sub out to my amp, are those problems connected to a specific manufacturer or is it just random failures?
The second thing, as this is predominantly chinese manufacturers teritory there are LOTS of them, althoug a few brands stick out. Out of those most people I've talked to tend to have Joying or Eonon, or as of recently Xtrons; Joying is out of the game for me, as of three people I know that have them all three ended up with faulty ones. I was first looking at Eonon GA2171S (because of the DSP), but I can't find any reviews or user experiences, nor can I find the specifications of the amp and/or DSP chip. Other Eonons and Xtrons look pretty similar to me, the specs and the looks, and I'd be happy to get one of them.
And this is where You come in
I need Your reccomendations, preferably based on personal experience, for a new 2DIN Android HU. My priorities are in this order :
- up to 7" screen that fits 2DIN (no overhanging 10" screens as it would look weird to say the least)
- good amp / sound output
- up to date hardware and software (Oreo, 4GB RAM, etc...)
- availability from EU (I'm from Croatia)
- moddability of software (custom roms)
- possibility of connecting factory steering wheel controls
As I've said, Eonons and Xtrons are what I looked at based on reccomendations (and avaliability from EU), but You're free to reccomend something else, I'm open to any suggestions as this is uncharted territory for me.
Tnx to everyone in advance :highfive:
I have 3 different units right now, Ownice, Eonon, and a no name generic. All three of them sound about the same to me, all are amplified with Pioneer or MTX.
I think you're better off just deciding based on features and interfaces you'll need (such as an SD slot or multi USB) and expect bugs cause they all have them
I also have 2 4 gig ram units now and I dont think they are any faster than the 2gb units i have.
