Is there a solution for any of this problems? - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a 16gb model with stock 2.1 unrooted firmware , and I'm currently waiting for another one to arrive. The one I have has a 32gb micro sd card and 2 usb 3.0 4tb external hdd's connected, I use it mainly for running kodi, and for streaming the external hdd's content to other devices at home that also have kodi installed. For my type of usage, by priority, this are the things I would like to see fixed / implemented:
- We already have suspend and reboot, but I would really like if there was a simple turn on and off / remote power off option without having to phisicaly touch the console, I don't like that the external hdd's are always working;
- Better system / app compatibility with external drives, currently I can't even make a simple kodi library backup;
- Option to auto-start a certain app after boot, by exiting that app it would go back to launcher;
- Better mouse support, those who use es explorer know how hard it is to do even the most simple actions without using a mouse;
- More theme / launcher custom options, possibility to choose only what I want and the size I want it to show on the "desktop", change wallpapers;
- More app compatibility from play store, there is a very limited number of apps currently available that are compatible with shield whitout having to use sideload launcher.
I don't know if there's already a solution for any of the things I mentioned, especially the first two, if so, please let me know, thanks!

controller/remote can already wake up the Shield.
AFAIK, the USB mass storage protocol doesn't have disk-specific instructions for spinning up and down drives. So it's up to each drive and/or enclosure (case+usb<->sata controller) to provide this functionality.

best way if you want a specific app to appear in the TV store is to contact the author of that app.
anyway this is a design/philosophy problem.
go for alternate ROM if you don't like the design/philosophy of Android TV.

True, but the current standby / sleep mode is a little like locking the screen of your phone (or even less because everything is still working, just the "screen" is turned off), I wanted the option to acctualy shut down shield with the remote, currently it can only be powered off by holding the power button on the console for about 10 seconds, after that you can't turn it on again from distance with any remote / controller.
The two external hdd's I'm using on shield are self powered 3.0 usb 4tb Verbatim Store `n` Save, when connected to any other device (wd tv, laptop, etc....) after a few minutes of not being in use, they will enter standy mode / shutdown, even if the device where they're connected to is still on, if you need to access any of it's contents (just open the hdd root folder for instance) they will power on automatically, this doesn't happen on shield and I don't think that this is any of the hdd's fault, I also don't know if it's in any way harmful for the hard drives to be on all the time...?

The reason why I want to backup kodi's library is exactly because, in order to root, I need to unlock the bootloader and, in doing so I'll loose all data...

I use a logitech k700 mouse + keyboard combo, but the mouse stops working after some time (I believe this is a known issue on shield), I don't know if this is due to leanback launcher, it does this with every mouse I tried so far...

Which launcher works best on android tv without being "sidelaunched"...? I ask this because the one I tried didn't open on shield startup, I had to open if afterwards on sidelaucher. I've also read that the opposite can also hapen, that certain launchers (xbmc launcher for instance) won't let you go back to leanback or access shield settings...

I have nothing against the design/philosophy of Android TV, I just think that if a certain app or game (Sine Mora [https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.digitalreality.sinemora] works flawlessly using the controller) is fully compatible with shield, it should be accessible without the use of sidelauncher.
Thanks for the help

im having the same hdd wake issue, only difference is mine seems fine until the satv sleeps. the hdd doesnt wake when satv does... so far my search for a fix hasnt gone well, hoping the M update will take care of it.
might give HAL launcher a try if you dont want to sideload, if you havent already. iirc it had an option in settings to be used as default launcher. i tried it about 6 months ago and went back to leanback.
there dont seem to be many good alternatives atm
and AutoStarter should work for autolaunching apps, also has a start to foreground and delayed start options, havent tried it on the satv though

you can backup your library to the cloud or a network server with ES File Explorer.
or with a PC (win/mac/linux) and adb (you dont need an usb cable, just activate debugging & network debugging in the Shield then "adb pull" the files you want to backup).

AFAIK, Sine Mora is accessible from the web play store , you don't need to sideload it but you need another device to access the web play store to push it to the Shield (or sideload a browser in the shield 1st since you have a mouse).
If Sine Mora doesn't show in the Shield Play Store it's because its editor didn't opt-in to do so. Try contacting them to fix that, some developers are just unaware of Android TV until someone ask them about it. The fix can take less than 5 minutes usually. The opt-in can't be automatic for a lot of reasons but mostly support (even more if it's a paid app).

Device Resolution

The first thing I see when the Mojo boots up is a message to the tune of change your device resolution. I'm not at all a developer, nor am I well versed in using an android device. I own one cheap Chinese tablet, dragon touch or something similar. Can do the basics, but I mostly use it as a reader. Of course I have a phone, but again I've never gone out of my way to use it for more than a phone. I'm fairly acquainted with Linux so my nephew has turned to me to help him with this. I've the male to male on order to root the system, but I doubt that's much to do with the problem. We have a hard time navigating with certain apps due to the resolution cut off, but mostly not seeing complete gauges in games kind of makes a game machine...a bit crap to say it lightly. For the money one should expect more. I can't find any solution in the setting. When I plug my tablet into my television it handles it with a secondary display GUI popping up and allowing me to choose the setting. Given the Mad Catz is using the TV as it's primary display I wouldn't suppose there'd be a clever way to trick it into thinking the TV is a secondary display? Just the only thing I could come up with I'm not married to the idea. If yous guys know how to help me that'd be great. bonus if this can be taken care of with out getting into terminal, or the android equivalent. Thanks buds.
Oh also, in the mean time while I wait on my cable. Is there a way to install games you've bought on Google Play manually through a usb stick?

Basically, you have to google your TV's make model and find how to turn oversan off.
When I use the MOJO on a PC monitor.. the resolutions drops to something like 320x320.. not sure why.. but I remove the HDMI cable, let the MOJO boot up then I plug the HDMI cable in and it's a 1024.

For free apps, install a google store alternative, ie:
http://joyofandroid.com/24-android-app-store-alternatives-for-those-who-hate-google-play/
I used Aptoide before rooting.
For paid apps, you could try backing up the apk on another device and sideload it on the MOJO.
I wouldn't bother doing either, just wait and root it.
thanks bud

Thank you! This is exactly what I needed.
Some televisions will adjust the picture of M.O.J.O. so that the edges are off screen. To change this, you should check the settings menus of your television and look for Aspect Ratio or Zoom options. Every television is different so the exact method for adjusting will differ from model to model. However, if there's a Zoom level option then setting that to 'Full' should solve it. Alternatively, if it's an Aspect Ratio menu then 'Scan Only' is the option to select.
Be sure to update the firmware on M.O.J.O. if you haven't already. The firmware update introduces a modification to the way Google identifies the M.O.J.O. hardware which allows for many, many more games to be listed and downloadable in the Google Play Store. This modification makes it so you don't have to root the device anymore, unless you want to for the other typical customization benefits that root access allows. Rooting won't void your warranty.
If you went through our "Getting Started" walkthrough, you can use "ES File Manager" for accessing any files stored in your Download folder or on a USB.

New from AppleTV-land

Hey All! So I got tired of waiting for either a root for the AppleTV3, or for Apple to man up and start allowing some of their App store love on the AppleTV. I was using both an ATV3 for Netflix and MLBTV and an old ATV1 for XBMC to stream SD content from a media server....
I got a discount on the MOJO, and it's been great, very easy setup process and rooting wasn't so bad either. Not nearly as cumbersome as the AppleTV was back in the day. Didn't realize I had an account on here from 10 years ago with a nifty Palm phone I had (Treo 700wx)... This was pre-iPhone mind you!
My challenges so far have been:
1) screen scaling - the edges of the screen are <just> off of my TV. XBMC on the appleTV had a scaling factor, and my TV doesn't have any options... I don't see anything in the App store either.
2) XBMC streaming just stops randomly from time to time, about 5 times per hour. I think it might have been the "full!screen" app. I'm going to keep an eye on it. I hope the wifi on the MOJO isn't to blame.
3) NTFS write: I have been able to unmount the stock android mount with Paragon, and then mount it back up with stickMount. But it doesn't happen automatic on startup. Maybe there's something in the startup "ini" that can turn off the stock mount? Then stickMount can run at startup...
4) "mirror" content - Rather than stream my content, I would like to setup a mirror, probably with FTP and Cloudberry backup.
But that's all gravy, basically I have been happy with the box. Happy to be here!

Glad to hear over all your enjoying it, can't remember the exact process but somewhere in the xmbc settings there is the ability to resize the display manually, I had to use it with my TV to remove the boarders properly too.

So that's interesting... If XBMC can do it, then it can be done in any other apps (or across the whole interface)... I saw another post about /sys/devices/platform/.../fb0 (http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.php?7948-SCRIPT-Modifying-Display-Scale). I checked that path on the M.O.J.O., but of course the hardware is different, plus I'm not sure if there are native methods to handle scaling. Something to look into more for sure. I'll start by finding the fb0 interface I guess...

Hi welcome,
#1 sounds like tv overscan
#2 I doubt it's a wifi issue, could be a XBMC buffering setting? (I don't use it much)

Use your PC keyboard and mouse to remotely control your Fire TV (requires root)

Setup Synergy (server) on your PC.
Sideload Synergy Android Client on your Fire TV.
The client can be setup from the Fire TV remote. Press "Right" from the empty textarea at the bottom to select "Connect".
The client will continue to run, even with the Fire TV is asleep. Just use escape to wake it, though you will have to reconnect after a restart.
I haven't found the right key combinations for Home or Menu, but ESC works for Back. I'll update this post if I stumble across them or someone posts them below.
For help setting up the server on your PC, see the Synergy User Guide.
Tip: I personally prefer to use hotkeys to switch between screens, rather than moving the mouse off screen. If you choose to use move your mouse from screen to screen, I highly recommend setting up a hotkey to bring your focus back to the main screen, for when you lose track of your mouse.
Note: An older version of Synergy is still available to download for free on SourceForge, though I haven't tested it with the android client.
I also ran across ShareKM (Share Keyboard & Mouse) in the related threads when posting this, but I haven't tested it, either.
Using a keyboard and mouse does not require root.

I haven't been able to get it to work for me. It just tells me I wasn't able to "Failed to connect to Wolvey:24800" on the firestick side. I changed the computer name to Wolvey since the previous one was the LAPTOP-;kjasdf and I was too lazy to sit there and try typing that over and over again. I restarted my computer after changing the name as well. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.
Also, I was wondering if DeskDock was tried out as well since it seems to be considered to be a more stable alternative?
Thanks

[Q] 35 tablets running at the same time

Feel free to move this thread, but I thought I should ask somewhere people know about hardware.
I own a local store which has about 35 stands for each product, and me and my team want to run slideshows (picture+video) in each one.
My guess is that I should use tablets.
Why tablets?
a) Slideshows needs a software to run them. Displays are just displays.
b) KODI (XBMC) app is a good option, as each Kodi would also run a Samba server and I could send the media I need to play to each one from one computer.
c) I looked for digital photo frames, but they don't support any kind of networking, and the few ones I've found are as expensive as tablets.
My questions are,
1) Is it fine if they are connected to AC power all day 24/7? Our local is opened 24hs. Should I take off their batteries? I don't know if tablets are prepared for that purpose.
2) Is there a difference between generic tablets and Samsung Galaxy Tabs 3? In fact, I really don't need high-end tablets, I just need to run the slideshows. But my only fear is the device-life.
When its plugged in it runs off ac power an keeps the battery's charged so as long as there is power you are good it won't hurt it. I can make a app that's a slide show for them if you want just install the app an open it an itll play. The send the videos an slide show pics an I'll work on when I can. 12 hour shifts this schedule

I appreciate your help.
I actually found out a solution to this. Not the best but fine.
I've installed Kodi and configured everything to block everything but the slideshow.
I needed to rooted them. Installed Xposed framework, and a Xposed addon to blocked hardware keys (leaving a combination to escape).
Installed Touch Blocker, to disable touch.
Installed Samba Filesharing app (running on default samba port thanks to root)
Configure Kodi to autostart Slideshow when it opens, and made a custom service-addon to auto refresh slideshow when new media is detected after 2 minutes, skipping if files are still transferring.
That took a lot more time to replicate in all 35 tablets because there is no cmw or teamwin recovery for Galaxy Tab 4 8'', or at least I haven't found, so Titanium Backup and Helium for some other stuff

Torrent app on unrooted shield

Has anyone been able to install a torrent app on a unrooted shield? If so which one because I have not had any luck sideloading any.

I use Ttorrent Pro and it works a charm. If you create a directory /Android/data/hu.tagsoft.ttorrent.lite or /Android/data/hu.tagsoft.ttorrent.pro on the usb hard drive (depending on your app version) you can select this directory as the save path in the app. I think the lite version also works.

how to fix 'file too large ( write to disk)' error message in utorrent download?
im running on lolipop rom for my galaxy note.
tTorrent works fine and has remote control support (web and Transdroid).

Anyone try sideloading this on a Sony XBR55X850D tv?
I use Zetatorrent pro on a Nexus Player with an old USB 2.0 hard drive I had lying around(HDDs still hold up best to frequent writing) as adopted storage. I keep the Nexus Player in commission just for that and let the shield go to sleep when I am not using it. Besides that I only use it for storage eating Android games that don't require a lot of processing power. You might need a mouse to deal with some of the settings but any standard USB mouse will do. I use a wireless USB mouse for gaming on my Shield(despite NVidia's best efforts to make PC games controller friendly, some still just work better with a keyboard and mouse). A Bluetooth mouse will probably work too. Otherwise, I was able to control the client with the Nexus remote which is more simplistic than the Shield remote, but I seldom even did that. Just install transdrone on your phone and enable the web interface in zetatorrent. You can now browse and add torrents right from your phone and manage everything in an interface that's very friendly. Want even more? Zetatorrent can automatically copy the files to your NAS after the torrent is completed. I absolutely love that feature for this application
