Formatting ext SD card with ext4 - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I tried formatted my 64GB card (with FAT) directly from the mobile (in settings > storage > unmounts) and then I did a file system change using TWRP to ext4... then I couldn't see my external SD Card anymore...
i´m sure the rom/kernel support this format as the internal storage is formatted with ext4, so I guess there´s something I´ve done wrong... can anyone tell me what?
(by the way its not a problem with the card itself - I just tried re-formatting to Fat and it appeared again)...

Maybe format it using your pc and a program. I don't think windows has ext4 option by default.

thanks for your suggestion but as far as PCs go I only have my office laptop which is restricted in terms of installing apps so that option isn't possible for me...

Perhaps at a friend. Or maybe there are some android apps to do it.

Remove Ext2?

I've tried a search to no avail. I don't have adb currently on my Vista machine, but I was wondering how to remove a ext2/ext3 partition from my sd through terminal. I recently got a Trancend 8GB Class 6, and I'd love to give my old stock 1GB to my wife. Sorry if this is a repeat. Thanks!

I do know what you are talking about, because i've used google, thanks. I have no computer at the moment, and have been partitioning my SD using SdSplit. Instead of telling everyone to search, how about you read? Is there anyway to do this through terminal?
No. Terminal or web do not have the programs need for this kind of function. You need to use a computer for this.
Technically, you can do it through the phone by formatting SD Card. Whenever I've had a problem with an ext2/ext3 (usually bootlooping after a ROM flash), I just backup everything on my FAT partition and go to Settings => SD Card and Phone Storage => Unmount SD Card => Format SD Card.
I'm fairly sure this method deletes the partition because df and mount don't show it...could be wrong though.

[Jan 17] [Tutorial] Format Your Windows Phone Micro SD Card

If you find this useful please click Thanks
If your having trouble trying to Format your Micro SD after flashing to Windows Phone 7,
Example: You have a 16GB card; However it reports you only have 199MB
I have attached Panasonic SD Card Formatter -
You Must Choose Full Format
Supported Operating System:
(1) For SD/SDHC Cards
- Windows 7
- Windows Vista
- Windows XP
(2) For SDXC Card
- Windows 7
- Windows Vista (SP1 or later)
- Windows XP (SP2 or later) with the exFAT file system update (KB955704)
Information:
Current formatter is beta version.
Final version will be completed around the end of March.
I have read a number of articles about not being able to reuse a sd card after it was used by windows phone 7. Does that also applied to those of us HD2 owners who are running WP7?
I have a 16gb card that is only using 4gb for WP7 because I formatted the other 12gb as fat 32 for Android.
Is there a way I can unformat the 12gb so that WP7 can use it. Or can I use the card and start all over by reinstalling WP7 and let it partition the card to use all but 200mb of the 16gb card?
Here is one of the articles I read about the sd card not being swappable:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2372732,00.asp
This is the HD2 Forum
Do a Full Format using the Utility I have attached.
Ok i downloaded the file and installed it. but when i choose format it tells me that the lock switch is on. Iv checked and rechecked but there is no lock switch on my sd card adapter.
Please help?
Hmm
I have the specific problem addressed (199Mb partition on a 16GB drive)
this program does not address it, it just allows me to reformat the 199Mb drive :-(
I will use fdisk or similar to resolve myself - but it doen't look as if this app "does what it says on the tin" ?
Try HP Low Level format tool, it always deleted my partitions on every device without problems
Hi
Thanks for this wonderfull tool, I downloaded this tool, installed in on Windows Vista, it formated my SD card wonderfully and even displayed the total space available, however now Windows refuses to recognise my SD card, and when I reconnected the SD card, neither your app nor Windows recognises the device.
Any suggestions.
thanks you just downloaded.

Windows Phone 7 uses the SDCard and the NAND memory together as internal storage, in a unique partition (like RAID for PCs, something similiar).
If you format your SD Card, you have to reset your phone.
You don't have to use any special tool, just use diskpart tool within Windows from command line (diskpart -> list disk -> select disk X -> select partition X -> delete -> select partition X -> delete -> create partition fs=ntfs -> DONE).
I have a 16 gb card, came with my HD2. I have run XBMod rom since it all came out months ago, no issues with the rom or the card.
When nodo came out, I tried another rom, phone started rebooting. I tried diskpart, cleaned the drive, recreated the partition as fat32. Let WP7 format, no help. Any ideas?
Successfully formatted my MicroSD
Just popped it in my Nikon D90 and it asked me do you wish to format. I said yes. Done in few seconds.
For others who see this, if you have used your card with WP7 mango you need a newer Nokia to format the card, as it will be encrypted, and Windows woun't recognize it!

This seems to be the only way to format the card once Mango is flashed. I have a 16GB card, but it didn't get any fat32 partitions, and it isn't recognized in any OS I try it on (Win7, Linux, OSX, Winmo 6.5, and now a new installation of WP7 doesn't see it either). If anyone finds another way, that would be awesome.

I'm trying to get my sdcard back after many failed attempts to reach Mango. Just want to go back to Android where everything is so much simpler...
How should I use the locker.cab exactly to get my 8gb sd card back ? I tried several times but always failed.
I have to push the cab while running WP7 wait for reboot then what ? I read that booting again in WP7 from there will lock it again. What should I do ??

My phone can't mount the SD card (Meizu M2 Note)

I have the Meizu M2 Note, and i have recently I bought a Samsung SDHC card 128GB.
When I first use it in my computer (with an USB adapter) i formatted it to be a NTFS (didn’t know back then that Android OS doesn’t support it), of course my phone didn’t recognise the card.
Then I formatted it to be an exFat file system and my phone couldn’t mount it either.
So I turn to use third-party softwares to turn it into FAT32 which failed as well, even tried to make partitions (4 of 32GB - FAT32) and I couldn’t do it with “Paragon” (it didn’t succeed formatting the other three partitions).
What can I do? my phone just won’t recognise my SD card!

Hi,
Are you using Windows? If yes, insert your SDHC card and format it to FAT32. If this doesn't work, you probably broke your SDHC card. But you said that you bought it recently, so I think that you still have guarantee. Good luck!

Hey, first I want to thank you for your quick reply, but I can't format it to FAT32 without using third party software (only has two options: exFat and NTFS), and when I tried to format it with the third party software it didn't work as well.
It can't be broken because it works just fine in my computer.

Hi,
If you are using Windows, you don't need third-party software to format your SDHC card. Just insert it in your computer, since you have said that your computer recognised your SDHC card. Then open Windows Explorer -> This PC -> Right-click on your SDHC card -> Click on format -> Choose FAT32 -> Choose format. This should solve your problem. If this doesn't work, go to windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/convert-hard-disk-partition-fat32-format#1TC=windows-7 and follow these steps. Good luck.

Download this tool (best partition manager for Windows): http://www.partitionwizard.com
Now select your SD Card and format the partition on it to ext4 and try on the phone.
If it does not work with ext4 try with ext3.
Remember that in that program when you make all the changes you want, you have to press the apply button.
If it still doesn't work try factory reseting (and backing up of course) and formating options ext4, ext3, exFAT, FAT32 in that order (they are from best to worst).

Does Android support ext4? I know windows doesn't right?

@Ori5800
Yes, android does support ext4.
@OnbekendV
The only reason I see to format in FAT32 is because Windows supports it. It is slower than ext4, holds smaller partition, name and any other size.
I would reccomend ext4.

No format on SD card after marshmallow upgrade

Hi, I'm trying to find how to solve this problem with no success.
I got Bliss Rom with marshmallow and i formatted my sd card as an extension of internal memory. Something that marshmallow allows.
I got back to stock system and recovery in order to upgrade officially from stock but, the system doesn't recognize the format of my sd card, suggesting to give it a format.
After that, system keeps on not recognize my sd card and I'm stuck.
Do I have to format it taking it out and accessing via a cardreader to manage file system or there's a way to solve this?
Thank you in advance...

No success. There are 2 partitions that cannot be modified. I'm stuck...:crying:
I just [RESOLVED] an issue after inserting a brand new SanDisk 128GB microSDXC sd card.
The Honor 5X will format the blasted thing to exFAT which refuses to open up in my Windows 8.1 Laptop to access folders and the like. A try to format to FAT32 did not have that available either. (Windows only showed NTFS/(default) exFAT)
So what i did was grab this SanDisk formatter
Code:
http://www.verbatim.com/includes/binary_details.php3?show=1&id=840
and in an instant my formerly exFAT transformed to the more easily PC accessible FAT32!
Now it shows up perfectly whenever plugged into any PC via USB and you can feel free to reach your SD Card contents manually to your hearts content.
No need for Huawei's (in my opinion buggy) HiSuite which i find sorely lacking and too much wasted time with Import/Export stuff.
Hope this helps someone, anyone who thinks that they absolutely must use Honor's/Marshmallow's own formatting to exFAT.

SD card for app storage

I'm using a 400GB SD card. I saw a comment about creating 2 different partitions on it as I want to use part of it for app storage and the other part for file storage, The second partition would be exFAT so I can remove the card and transfer my books, music, etc. to it by attaching the SD card to my laptop as I understand that Windows would not be able to recognize the partition that would be formatted as internal storage. I did format the SD card using my laptop as two separate partitions. My Samsung Galaxy Tab A saw both partitions. I selected the 96GB partition as I wanted to use that for app storage and selected the option to use it as internal storage. Unfortunately when I did that, it appears that the system set the whole CD card up for internal storage. Does anyone have any insight on how to accomplish this - use part of the SD card for internal storage and part of it for storage that would be recognizable by Windows? Thank you very much.
I have not tried, so take the advice as a suggestion, perhaps android can be "fooled", which I doubt.
After creating a bulk partition in android, move the SD to Windows and resize that partition, and create a second partition on the remaining capacity and hide it.
Now move the SD back to android and see what happens.
If android will reformat the partitions again then I can't advise anything else.
However, if android accepts the memory, then the next step is to discover the partition in Windows and recheck the SD in android.

Well, I was trying to work on that and now the Android Storage module (in Settings) keeps crashing when I open it. IDK what happened here. I've reformatted the SD card, I've removed the SD card, I've rebooted the table multiple times. I'm almost to the point of having to restore the tablet from scratch ... again.
Try this:

Complete app management, move to SD, clear cache, remove bloatware and more

Thats a bummer but that is what I was feeling was going to be the outcome. I guess I'll just go with it as internal storage then and be rlefated to wireless transfer of my books, etc. To the tablet. Any thoughts on why my Storage module keeps crashing now? Something definitely went nuts somewhere along the way here. It was running fine.. until I start poking around with this. I'll probably just do a rebuild again tonight.. if I can find my steps notes.
I also don't think it's possible to do what you have in mind. It's also important to remember that Windows will only mount the first partition of an SD card. It won't see any other partitions without 3rd party software installed.

The reason people want a micro SD card is to be able to move it around between devices, so it is not a good idea to convert it into 'internal storage' for two reasons:
1. You can no longer move the card around (not without reformatting it again).
2. This process would significantly slow down the system if the OS starts saving apps, data and files on the micro SD card because it sees this space as internal storage.
Because of how you partitioned the SD card and tried converting only a part of it as internal storage, my guess is the process caused corruption somewhere, and the system is crashing because of that. I'm afraid you'll have to do a factory reset and start from scratch. I hope your files are safe.

You should NEVER use an SD card for internal storage. They are MUCH to slow for that purpose. Today's SoC have RAM chips mounted directly on top and are several times faster than the fastest SD card bus. And low end tablets, which includes ALL Tab A devices, use a USB bus with limited bandwidth. So using faster SD cards is pointless as they will still only be as fast as the bus. SD cards are fine for storing video, audio, text and downloaded files, but NOT for running apps. Doing so will cause the device to be laggy at best, and cause crashes at worst.

Something strange in that attachment. Since when do Android SD cards have NTFS partitions? As far as I know, the internal storage partitions that Windows couldn't read were formated as Ext3 or Ext4 and the external as either FAT32 or exFAT.

Of course it can. It can show several. But NOT the two partitions created on an Android SD card because one of then is formated in a file system Windows doesn't recognize and that is what the poster was talking about.
edit: Disk Manager will actually show the partition but it won't be assigned a drive letter because Windows can't mount it.
