Nexus Imprint, double tap to wake and screenlock - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have a Nexus 6P that obviously comes with Nexus Imprint (fingerprint scanner). I am rooted and have Xposed framework installed. AFAIK, in the Android security settings it is only possible to enable Imprint if a lock screen with a pattern, pin code or password has been set. I set a pattern. Imprint in combination with swipe screen to unlock is not possible unfortunately AFAIK. As I always carry my phone with me (in my pocket) I do not care that much about security of a lock screen. In fact it only annoys me to have to enter my pattern each time I turn on my screen. To be honest I only use Imprint to turn on my phone and not as a security feature. I could live with swipe to unlock. To overcome the annoyances of the pattern/pin code/password screen unlock I applied settings that the screen unlock shall not take place when I'm carrying the phone, when I'm in trusted places, when my phone is connected to my car bluetooth device and when the phone recognises my face.
I flashed Franco Kernel that supports double tap to wake functionality and which I find extremely useful. The problem with double tap to wake in combination with the above settings is that the phone sometimes turns itself on when it's in the pocket of my pants (I carry the phone with the screen towards my leg in order to protect the screen from getting damaged when accidentally a big object slams into my leg e.g. I run into the table corner). Apparently the fabric of the pocket is so thin that double tap to wake can be applied when the phone is in my pocket. In absence of a screen lock (disabled most of the time with the above settings) this can lead to my phone leading it's own life (e.g. last night without knowing calling my wife at 2.45 a.m. with the speed dial on my home screen when I was in a bar with friends and she was asleep at home; she thought I had had an accident or something, nearly gave her a heart attack ).
So what I would like to do is:
- keep Nexus Imprint so that I can turn on my phone with my fingerprint
- keep double tap to wake
- apply as little as possible screen lock modes other than swipe to unlock
- apply swipe to unlock whenever the phone is in my pocket (or, if that's not possible, at all times), without breaking the Imprint functionality.
Is there a way that I can achieve this?
Thanks!
Jazz

When setting up imprint you can turn off the requirement for the secondary measure except for once on boot. I use only my fingerprint scanner to fully unlock my phone.

Nexus imprint vs Smart Lock

I was wondering thoughts on this I have the phone and have noticed that I am still hitting the power button to double tap the notification to unlock the phone directly to the app (smart lock and on body/trusted place enabled) and not using the fingerprint sensor because it just unlocks phone. (To the home screen or last app left open). Don't get me wrong the fingerprint sensor is amazing.
When you double tap the notification, you can use the fingerprint scanner instead of putting you pattern or pin in, even though it doesn't look like you have that option.

That's good to know thanks, but you still have to hit the power button if you have ambient display off.
I have a smart watch so smart unlock is always there. The problem is smart unlock goes into lock screen but finger print goes into home screen directly. I'm not sure if it's intentional to make more people use fingerprint.
I stopped using smartlock because of nexus imprint. Smart lock is kind of hit or miss anyways (at least on the original nexus 5) and nexus imprint is much more accurate and reliable.
Also, of your phone is lost or stolen, a criminal wont be able to unlock it by going to a trusted location or connecting to a trusted WiFi/Bluetooth source.

I still use Smartlock with my car because its mounted and I can't get to the fingerprint scanner.

Wait this thing has a power button? Lol I've have barely used the power button since I set up imprint on day 1
It just works so flawlessly (unless my finger is wet/moist) I pick up the phone and my natural finger position lands and bam it's like my phone was never in sleep mode. I ended up only setting up smart voice for the ok google function and disabled face unlock and on body detection, I never used trusted location, WiFi or Bluetooth to paranoid about losing my phone

Pin/pattern often needed to unlock?

EDIT: dkotoric has realised this is due to using the double tap to sleep function on some launchers. Locking your device with that prevents the fingerprint scanner from allowing access for some reason.
So today was my first full day with the 6P. It's a truly great device.
A whole bunch of times though when I've come to unlock the device I've had to put in my pattern because it won't accept the fingerprint scanner.
The icon at the bottom of the lock screen that should be a fingerprint is just a lock symbol. If I then lock the phone again and reunlock it works as expected.
Not sure if this is a software bug or some setting I've got wrong. Can't see a pattern for when it does it though. I've switched 'require pattern on restart' off which has made no difference.

I've experienced that on one occasion today. That was after no occurrence in a full day's use yesterday. I put it down to slightly incorrect/incomplete/inaccurate finger print scans when it's set up.
Had no issues yet, used it for 2 days.
I have a pin set for after a reboot and it will ask for pin if I accidentally use pthe power button to switch on.
So far my finger print has not failed once o. My two index fingers.
I set up my finger print with a central / top end / bottom end / left edge / right edge and its worked fine
Been super accurate for me

I recommend using your main finger on different angles rather than using 5 different fingers when setting it up. ?

I've setup each index finger once and it hasn't skippes a beat. I'd setup your finger again and this time move your finger around after every press to get different angles.

I haven't had any issues whatsoever. You could setup each index finger as 2-3 different fingers if you want to improve accuracy too.
Still waiting on my 6P, but I do have the 5X. Installed all of my usual apps when I received the phone. Set up fingerprint scanner. For the life of me couldn't figure out what the heck was going on. Every time I would unlock the phone it would go to PIN screen. I had read all of the reviews on how fantastic the FPS was. Started to get really annoyed. In fact I did a factory reset to see if this would help. This time I didnt install apps just set up FPS. Worked flawlessly. Installed apps again and what do you know stopped working again. Then it hit me, I have an app called ScreenOFF. Basically I could touch the screen and it would turn the screen off without hitting the power button. Uninstalled app and FPS worked perfectly. SO, be careful if you have any of these types of app as it seems it screws up the ability to bypass lock screen
It seems to have sorted itself over night. Hasn't done it so far today. Thanks guys.

what I notice is I use lock app and apex launcher so I have it set up to double tap on screen to lock the device. If I lock the device using this method I can no longer unlock the device with my fingerprint. I have to use the lock pattern. Then I have to lock the phone again via power button in order to use fingerprint scanner?

Holy **** you're right yeah that's been my issue the whole time doing the same with Action Launcher. Been so used to using it it didn't occur to me that's the cause. That's annoying.

I have your issue but I am not using any sort of double tap to lock apps. also I am using google now launcher.
Yea this happens when you use a third party app or launcher to lock the device via a double tap on the home screen. I set up a gesture in Nova Launcher to lock the device via a double tap on the homescreen and when I do I cannot unlock the phone via Imprint. There is just a lock symbol instead of the Imprint symbol and the only way to unlock it is using the pin. It seems that right now the only way to use Imprint to unlock the device is when you lock the device using the power/sleep button. Using any 3rd party software without root access to lock the device will only let you unlock the device via the pin instead of Imprint.
EDIT: Everything works fine with root access. If you grant the app performing the screen lock root access then you will be able to lock the screen with say a gesture like double tapping the home screen and then you will still be able to unlock the device via Imprint.
I had this issue as well where my 6P would ask for my pin after using the fingerprint scanner. It would do this many times per day.
What I have found to stop this from happening is removing the administrator rights from all the apps that uses it to lock the screen. It seems that the phone will ask for a pin when a 3rd party app locks the screen.
So I'll just rely on Android locking the screen on its own vs entering the pin so many times a day along with the fingerprint scanner.

Are you just using nova as far as root access? I'm so used to just having greenify lock the screen, but I'm having this issue

I'm actually using loads of root apps including Greenify. (Though I'm not using greenify anymore) Everything is working fine. Are you having the issue when locking via a greenify gesture? I didn't even know Greenify had a screen locking gesture lol. Or do you mean the Imprint issue occurs after Greenify puts the device to sleep automatically?

Greenify has a widget that will hibernate and shut the screen off. I ended up finding this app that will shut the screen off and allow me to use the fingerprint to wake/unlock the device. :good:
So far, the only 3rd party app that I've found that can shut the screen off without root and without needing the pin again is Gravity Screen https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree&hl=en
It has a few widgets that you can link your double tap homescreen gesture to. Specifically, I'm using Lightning Launcher and link the double tap to the "Off" shortcut. The other shortcuts will lock the phone and then you'll need the pin again instead of just the fingerprint.
However, I think the way this app accomplishes this is to first blank the screen off with just a black overlay and then set the screen timeout to around 10seconds (it sets it right back to whatever you had before by the time you wake the screen again). So far, I haven't had a problem with this since the app also has "in pocket protection" in which it will keep the screen from turning back on if the proximity sensor is covered. So if you double tap to sleep but then put it in your pocket before the 10 seconds is up, it won't turn it back on. If you have it sitting on your desk, you can double tap to sleep, but then tap again on the black screen within the first 10 seconds to see the navigation keys again. This also has the weird side effect of not being able to use the fingerprint reader during those 10 seconds, because technically the screen is still on. This was a little unsettling at first since I couldn't figure out why the fingerprint reader wasn't vibrating when I thought the screen was "off". To me, it's not that big of a deal so it's fine with me.

Turn off without using the power button?

So, the 6P is a sodding big phone and I have fairly small hands.
Switching on to an unlocked state using the fingerprint reader is easy. Switching off requires the power button, which means wrestling the damn thing into a position where I can press the button.
I've looked at a few apps that switch off the screen with a shake or gesture, but these always result in a pattern request to unlock fully when turning back on with the fingerprint reader. Looking at this thread, it seems the Nova Launcher double-tap off function results in the same secondary security challenge when switching back on.
I assume this is because the third-party double-tap/shake/gesture event is only turning the screen off, not actually locking the device as the power button would.
Any ideas/solutions?
Use pocket lock and map the nova double tap gesture to the shortcut provided by pocket lock. There is some delay before it gets fully locked but it's the best option so far.

Coming from LG G4 - have a few misc. questions

1. I liked having the dock clock activate while charging. There only seems to be a daydream clock setting and there's no where to select "while docked, while charging, either." When the 30 seconds expires to initiate sleep, screen just goes black. What am i missing?
2. Can you re-arrange the quick launch setting options?
3. I'm assuming to use fingerprint, you have to use pattern, pin, or passcode?
4. I've noticed waking the phone from charging forces you to swipe to make the phone functioning. Is there a way to not have it locked while it charges?
5. Is there any way to modify the functionality of the hard buttons?
6. Face recognition seems useless. I would think if I hit the power button and then wake the phone and show my face, it would automatically unlock and it doesn't (I end up using the fingerprint). Also, the pocket/body security featured even when enabled doesn't seem to keep the phone unlocked.
TIA!

1. Yes, in the Daydream menu, hit the 3 dot menu button in the upper right hand corner and select "When to Daydream" - you'll see those options.
2. Need you to elaborate.
3. Yes.
4. I don't know what you're talking about it needing to be swiped to make it functioning - but to the other part of the question regarding not locking when charging - not that I've seen.
5. If there were, you'd have to find a custom ROM / xposed module that would do that - I haven't seen any.
6. Personally I've never used it, and like you said, if you have the fingerprint, why bother?

Lift to wake - How does it work?

I found out the other day that this phone has lift to wake. My question is: How does it work exactly? Assuming no lockscreen security, does it work like the iPhone and OnePlus 5? i.e. Does it automatically turn on when you lift it toward you so you can interact with the screen, or does it just flash notifications? Can you just lift it up, then swipe to unlock? I'm asking because the phone has no double-tap-to-wake, which is a must-have feature for me, but this is a good compromise.
Thanks in advance.
Edit: To clarify, I'm asking if I can lift the phone and start using it WITHOUT hitting the power button.
Just like you described, lift to wake and notification wake, then you can intertact with it.
Lift it up and it wakes.
It does a black and white version of your lockscreen.
If you tap it hard enough, you can wake it btw without lifting it up.
I believe it uses either the gyroscope or acceleration sensor, or both. If you twist your phone or move it quickly, the dim display will turn on. Just like others have pointed out.
Also you can have it set up to be unlocked and ready when lifting up by setting up smart Lock. If your home your device can stay unlocked and when you lift it up it will be ready to go.
Do we know if we can enable a tap to wake or wave to wake?
Is this something we would need root for?
this function not smooth as iPhone.
