Z5 Marshmallow update - Xperia Z5 General

Ok guys, since we're all waiting in here, seemed like a good idea to start this thread... If anyone has any 'good' news they'd like to share about the update, please do so here
Also, when the update is out, would be cool to have everyone post their comments and experiences in this thread, keeping it tight!
At this point, we don't seem to have anything set in stone on when this update is coming, I'm just hoping on a couple of good fixes with the update, like the auto brightness issue, camera optimisations, smoothness/lag issues etc..
What do you guys hope to get to see in the new update?

I hope it wont take long.

Misleading title

I'm kinda happy with my Z5 so far (I encounter bugs and issues here and there though). I'm a little bit less impressed with Sony when it comes to fixing bugs and releasing updates.
Mashmallow release date: October 5, 2015
October... November... December... 1/2 January... still no release date. I'm not talking about the actual ROM, just about a release date... (January? February?)
And I'm pretty sure they received the Marshmallow sources way before October 5th and they use a pretty-near stock ROM. What's taking so long compared to, for example, Motorola or LG (already on Marshmallow)? I mean, yeah the KitKat -> Lollipop transition was pretty steep, with a lot of new code, but Marshmallow and Lollipop are close cousins, use the same design, ART runtime, etc.
Or maybe it's just me; After using custom roms for years, and not having to wait that long after a manufacturer to update its phones, I became impatient :|

At least Sony update their phones I'm happy to wait when it comes it comes I'm tired of expecting. We had 2 year updates with the original XZ so I'm more than happy
Sent from my E6653 using Tapatalk

I don't understand why the Z3 series has the Marshmallow concept and Z5 doesn't.

Waiting is okay for me, as long as the update brings something big, like new feautres. But at least Sony should tell us when they're going to release Marshmallow - it's now a bit long time already.

I hope to see new redesigned UI as current one is really boring and these colorfull icons in menus are no longer elegant to be honest, it does not look consistent to me any longer.
Camera blur fix and low light improvements along with 4K 60fps and intelligent stady shot are expected.
Battery life for sure needs to be improved as well as lags and response of the phone.
Bug fixes please.
Dream Wishes? Old Timescape in new rewamped design

The most important is the manual camera, or at least return of iso on sony manual camera app

Marshmallow was released by google on October 5th 2015...

It's a shame because I'm waiting for the marshmallow update to see if it's worth me keeping this phone or selling and getting a nexus 6p

Sony never promised MM to release in 2015 for the Z5 lineup, according to sources the update is going to be released this month.

I'm thinking the same thing, either swapping it or selling it for either a 6P or a G4 (or even my previous Moto X Style I swapped for this device)
They need to fix and improve a lot of stuff for the device for me to keep it..

It's been reported that the new firmware bound for Sony Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z4 in Japan has been certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance, a process that is needed to for OTA software update, so hang in there folks =)

It was, like, a month ago... Nothing new.

I have marshmallow on my 6P and I tried the concept on the Z3 and it's not that much of a change. It does bring native fingerprint scanner support that hopefully Sony will bring forward with their own scanner. Also adopted SD storage with it's a bit of a mess on its own.
Another thing I've noticed, because app uptake for new versions of android is slow (right now about 5% of people are on marshmallow) there's a lot of bugs to be ironed out by devs at the beginning therefore IMHO is much better to get onto the new big releases a few months later after Google puts them out.
I think Sony does a fine job with all this. By the time they came out with Lollipop most bugs had been ironed out and they quickly brought it up to 5.1.1.

New firmware certified for the Z1 14.2.A.1.114

What is it going to bring?
hopefully camera improvements, this (at least for me) is the main area that needs further improvements. we also need white balance and the ability to move apps to the SD.

I was amazed too! I guess it will be bug fixes, which we need.
Camera improvements too! I mean, you can take great photos with Manual, but you'll need time to set it up.

White Balance definitely will be in next update.
May be we'll have better RAM management, fix some issues of previous firmware.
We have to wait til beginning of Jan to get this update.
Btw, someone in XDA have posted the way Sony named for Xperia's firmware. I don't remember, can someone re-post it please.
Wow Sony is really not slacking with their updates now!
How long did it take from when .290 got certified to it got released again?
I think we will see this update out early January

Well this might be the update that was mentioned by a Sony representative from a Sony forum that will be rolled out of the first few days of January next year and if this is it then it will include the White Balance setting. And that'd be the answer to our prayers who's suffering the yellow hue. Yay!:fingers-crossed:
4.4? I'm still waiting on the 290 update

this isn't 4.4, neither it is just a minor bug fixes. I am not expecting a big list of additional features but we might see quite good number of bug fixes and few additional features (white balance) and some improvements because the build number is quite different from what we have. just like .257 update.
One thread was already closed few days ago when someone show up with a new Firmware update which should fix all the problems with the Z1. I really hope this one will be confirmed soon as I waiting for that. The number 1 is the most important thing that mean huge improvements and changes between 14.2.X.0.XXX and 14.2.X.1.XXX.
actually, this can be a decent update, the one that just came out was maybe tested and created as a core android 4.3 with same features and functionality across for Z1, Zu and Z phones. This upcoming update is probably ZU and Z1 both newer and S800 specific update with extra features. Could be why we still havent gotten an offical change log because they are still rolling out 4.3 for Z phones and probably update the change log together with this firmware for Z1. Who knows.

Not all certified firmwares goes out and not every firmware is meant to be for each region.
I hope I'm wrong but I think it's just a test release.

Would make sense for the white balance app to arrive in this mew update, and perhaps it might also come with the 20MP superior auto for all variants. Personally would like to see a noise reduction on the 20MP manual.

yes at present it is in testing but a firmware with 14.2.A.1.XXX will come soon either the same build certified or a higher one. ( hopefully by end of this year on in early week of JAn 2014 ).
Or if you've bought an unbranded one in UK you probably won't get it before your next new phone purchase. Never known an update take so long for sim free phones.

if you guys got the japanese one, the new firmware gives white balance option and some tweak to the battery save menu.
Nothing much else though.
also still not 4.3
Just hope this version will bring the bugs fix and also the 4.4 KitKat

Aren't you afraid of not getting the updates in a reasonable amount of time?

I see we're all going crazy about the specs of the Xperia Z2, but no one here appears to be concerned about how slow sony is to roll out updates, Kitkat 4.4. was released on the 31th of October, and the Xperia Z1 , sony's current flagship still hasn't got it :/ ... 4 months after the release , they plan on delivering the update on April, 5 months, maybe 5 and a half months after 4.4 was really released and they're not making any promises of improving, what do you guys think?
That's definitely a concern of mine. Sony is worse than the major Android manufacturers (Motorola, HTC, Samsung, even LG is rolling out its Kitkat update) in terms of updates. One consolation is that Android updates aren't as big or crucial as they used to be since it is a pretty mature OS at this point, but I can't deny that I find Sony's update speed disappointing. I don't think it will stop me from getting the Z2, tho.
You have problems with 4.3?
It's incredible how people aren't satisfied, ever...
Wait and you'll get your KitKat...Sony is actually building their UI, it's not only cheap mask over Google framework - that's why they need time.
Wen you get KitKat you'll request another version...or you'll open thread to request root for kitkat...
Relax, you still have almost one whole year of support and everything will come and be released on time.

Do you really think that getting the update 5 months later is acceptable? It's not like we're getting a new UI with sony's implementation of kitkat, we should actually , I don't understand why reasonably demanding for things, makes us a**holes, should we just keep quiet and be content with what companies give us? We're on similar situation , I can't stand the awful battery life of the nexus 5 , I don't miss the SD card at all since I have the 32 gb version and that's enough for me, what bothers me too is that the 16:9 photos are 6 MP, I would like 12-13 MP photos, I don't need 20 MP photos but I'm not complaining either Haha

Some more thoughts on slower updates that might make your mind rest a little easier:
As someone else pointed out, if you take Samsung as an example, faster updates aren't always a good thing. Samsung devices are usually pretty well optimized for the version of Android they ship with, but when they update to a new major version of Android the performance can get substantially worse. I've noticed this with several Samsung devices. So giving a manufacturer the time to make sure everything works well on their hardware is a good thing. Keep in mind brand-new Android releases are often tailored to a subset of Android hardware in the latest Nexus devices, and hardware differences in other devices might take a while to perfect.
Also, new major versions of Android often have bad bugs. Look at Motorola who invested a lot of effort into getting 4.4 on the Moto X very soon after it was released. Unfortunately 4.4 had several major bugs including broken Exchange support! Moto X owners who upgraded were stuck with broken devices until Moto released 4.4.2 months later. So it is also good to wait for at least a couple of point releases before a manufacturer commits to a new version of Android.
Nexus devices don't have these issues because they can just keep releasing new updates quickly, but if a manufacturer's customized Android actually offers valuable improvements (which I think Sony's does) it makes sense to take a little longer.
I still wish Sony were faster, tho
I'm a bit worried. I honestly Sony would concentrate on one flagship per year, like everyone else. I'm on an XZ and am sick of trying to keep up. I'm considering my next phone now, but I can't say if the z2 is a slam dunk now. I do like the sound of the speakers though...
I've used Sony (Ericsson) phones for years. Late updates are a condition you either live with or jump ship. Sony has always been notoriously late with update releases.
Sent from my C6906 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Personally not worried about getting updates late but a bit worried about not getting updates at all after a while & becoming abandoned
I mean Samsung is releasing Kitkat for GS3 which is a device from may 2012, Not sure if it's the same with Sony specially with their two flagship a year strategy
I'm not. If there is not a disturbing bug in Z2, I still use it. If the new feature that roll out from Sony and Google with an update is not necessary and attracting to me,I don't change my phone to other brand.
Who cares what OS version you got? Unless there is a bug or something, I don't care if I ever get any updates. I would even prefer the older version now since they messed up the notification screen.
To be honest, Jellybean is stable enough so that we don't necesarily "need" further updates. I'm "suck" on 4.1.2 on my optimus g and don't really mind at all(And yes, LG is worse at abandoning their flagships). Got kit kat on my nexus 7 and don't really see much difference. I miss the great sony UI though. Still torn between this phone and the z1.
I buy phone - start to see if everything works - root - flash custom rom. Never worries about updates.

And tell me what features of 4.4 you so desperately need having just 4.3 ? I understand the importance of an update, but on the other and I think people exaggerate the need for them a lot...
So to answer the question - no, i'm not afraid. Frankly speaking, I don't really care, as long as it won't take a year or so.

A pretty major update in 4.4 for devices with on-screen buttons, like the Xperia series, is "immersive mode" (http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/1...go-truly-full-screen-hide-the-navigation-bar/). There are other nice updates, and maybe that one doesn't interest you, but to me it's a big deal. You never know when Google is going to throw a great new feature like that in.

This could be the time frame for all the other OEM's except motorola which might release it in december. I would call that fast. Will the Z3 be able to run ART with even better battery saving capabilities? Anyone know what features might be added? Im interested to know if there will be any major changes, or if I should just wait for a Z4/Nexus 6 that will have the latest features instead of getting a slimmed down update.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Ah, yes, but because of the frequency of new models being released, it's easy to forget that the Z and Tablet Z actually only came out about 18 months ago - so are pretty much within the '18 month' window of getting supported.
I actually don't want Android 5 / L before it has stabilized. KitKat needed 5 iterations to settle (remember all the connectivity issues up and including 4.4.3?!).
Hence, completly agree with zoomee, let Nexus users do some testing and Google do some fixes first
Meanwhile, the Z2 STILL doesn't have 4.4.4

[Not a surprise] We are getting Android 6.0 Marshmallow

According to the official Sony Mobile blog, we are indeed getting the next major release of Android:

Excited?
Fantastic news!

They probably don't want to repeat an as sloppy start as with LP, so I'd guess somewhere between Jan-Mar, but the fact that they're moving closer to Vanilla may affect that..
Personally, I hope that they will expand the theming capabilities of their current theme engine. It's already quite good but being able to theme more the official way (no rooting or modding just swapping the themes on the go) would be great.
You think that next update will be closer to Vanilla from Sony's Android™ Concept??
Kinda pity the Z1 users. Their device is more than capable to run Marshmallow. But we're not here to talk about them. I'm kinda not that excited about the Marshmallow update. I just want Sony to release a bugfree update in just one release. Is that really too hard to ask for?

You think that next update will be closer to Vanilla from Sony's Android™ Concept??

Google can't do it and you ask sony for that ? Impossibru
I don't get why Sony have to change the home circle to a house and the phone icon. I hope they keep it stock and get rid of that coloured notification bar
Should arrive around Dec 2016 then once the Networks have pissed around with it!
Always.... Complains when we hesr good news from Sony ><"
Get some of you never tired of yourself [emoji14]
Well be happy that we get Android 6.0 ^^
Just somewhere and keep positive

Classic Question: Android 8.0 or 8.1

So, does anyone have any news on when we'll be getting the update? Sony's website says, for the XA1 Ultra, that it's coming soon; that's it. Apart from that, I've had that the update was supposed to possibly roll out in January/February - but, it's now, March 1. I haven't even received last month's security update yet.
Hi
I've Xperia XA1.
Somebody says it will roll out with Android 8.1 in April for both (ultra and normal), but nothing is sure. (Sadly) we've only to wait...
The only thing I hope is to have all the features there are on other Xperias, like XZ (so better camera app and performance and battery improvements), not only a new UI.

Myself included, Faby, but if you look in the Questions/Answers section I have posted an issue with my phone. I hope it's a software issue only and that it'll be fixed with Android 8.0 or 8.1. I can't stand having horrible charging problems and a weird phone boot sequence.

Great (and official!) News! Thanks!
It's released today.
Just received and installed the 8.0 update on my G3223. Looks good so far, no issues I've noticed but I'm pretty tired and haven't really poked around in it much.
I do like the Oreo home nav circle icon better . :cyclops:
