Device Name - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I looked around couldn't find anything. Is there any way to change the device name from the default? Is it possible without root?

Not sure what you mean because your post is pretty vague. You cant edit build prop without root though if that's what you are asking...

I am referring to it's network name. For example, my phone identifies itself as android-cb9aec3 on my network. On previous phones I have been able to change the device name in the settings. I can't find anything in the settings on the 6P. I'll look into editing build.prop. I imagine the value is part of the "net" class. Thanks for the tip.

Might check in developer options. I know I've seen the option there before.

Settings/Wi-Fi/(menu top right 3 dots) Advanced/Wi-Fi Direct
Looks like there is an option the Rename Device (top right).
Not sure is this is want your looking for?

I'm used to rename my devices in my router settings and that's what I need to have.
Maybe you should describe the purpose a bit more.

Thanks for the suggestion. I believe the Wifi Direct name isn't the device's network name. The network name I am referring to is the name that is included with the phone's DHCP request for an IP address.
In previous versions you used to be able to change this in the developer options. I can't find it anymore on Marshmallow.

I set a static IP address on my device and entered the name I wanted to use (nexus6p) and the IP address in my local DNS server. Did the same for my Chromecast device . I only see these names on the network. I've done this with all my wireless devices.

It still exists on cm13. I have a clean compiled copy if you want. Just pure cm source plus blobs. Nothing added.

WIFI Generic Mac Address to Actual Mac FIX!

I know that some of you are still dealing with this issue and in different roms, As I was too, but for anyone wishing to fix this the right way after installing their roms, follow below and this will fix your problem.
Disable WIFI (settings/System/Wireless & networks untick wifi. System must be rooted, use any root explorer, and navigate to your SD card location where you put the file you downloaded, and select to copy it, then navigate to system/lib. and rename the file with adding .old at the end, and paste this file into this location. Then MOVE the file you just added ".old" to your sdcard as a backup, exit out of your explorer and reboot.
And when you are back in the phone, turn wifi on, go to settings about phone then hardware information, and you now have your actual wifi mac address and not the generic.
Anyone who uses zip roms, can replace this file in there zip file before flashing. Should work without having an issue, cant guarantee every phone as I do not have every phone, nor can I guarantee every rom, but you can always try it.
If this was fixed then FML but I tried.
The attached file is not zipped, after downloading just rename and remove the .zip at the end, forum will not allow uploading of unknown extension. Initial User Testing shows POSSIBLY NOT Compatible with Gingerbread
Thanks for this. It's exactly what I was looking for!
I use NexusHD2 Gingerbread, and it doesn't work for me (it's \system\lib - no etc folder in system). It actually stopped my wifi working. It turned on for a few seconds, didn't even try to connect, and then turned off.
It's all fine after restoring the old state and rebooting though.
Thanks for the effort all the same - I hope others have more luck than me.
if it really works why dont you share this with the developers so that the new builds will come with the real mac address.
are you sure that you are getting the real MAC address.
because in the MDJ's latest kernel we get a unique MAC address but not the original one

AGarp, now I cant be 100% sure, but I can assure you that ts not the 00:11:22:33:44:55. My MAC Addy right now is: 00:90:4C:B7:CE:36 Unique or Actual I dont think matters once you have a actual valid MAC Address.
And as for sharing it with Developers, I think by posting here I am offering it to Dev's and anyone else that wants it.

It's not dissimilar to the MAC address I have on my device (not the same though). Is this just a forced value, or is it actually the real MAC address? If it's a forced value I'm just wondering what advantage there is over having the previously forced one of 00:11:22:33:44:55? Surely you'd still have the same MAC address as someone else that did the same thing on their phone.
Or am I missing something?

i think the advantage is when u try to connect two Leo phones to a same network might get conflict because of similar MAC Addresses
and some routers wont accept this "00:11:22:33:44:55" MAC Address
I did that and now my phone does not boot!!! Please HELP

Little known feature on Jelly Bean ROMS : Multiuser profiles

Little known feature built into any 4.1.1 codebase and beyond, Multi User Profiles.
Easy to enable on rooted devices:
Open a terminal emulator and type the following:
Code:
su
pm create-user <new-user-name>
(replace <new-user-name> with your desired username)
That's it! Then hold down power button until you see the power menu, there will be an option for the new username you added! This user can have it's own Google account, Apps, etc. Great when a device is used by spouses, kids, friends, etc.
Cheers!
Found an app that manages users without having to use the Terminal. HERE
AWESOME !!! This works great! Thank you!
Do you happen to know how to change the name/label of the "Primary" account? I found the help for "pm" and didn't see anything. Actually, the "create-user" option isn't even listed.
Thanks again!

Found the answer, credit goes to mandian, I'm just referencing another post, so please don't give me any credit for this:
In case someone hasnĀ“t figured out how to rename/change any username, it's pretty easy.
You only have to go to /data/system/users and edit the "userX.xml" file, where X is the user number(0,1,2,...). Then change the name between
to any other you like. For example, from guest to invitado. Save the file and reboot. It work well for me.
P.S: If you don't know which user number has the one you wanna change, check out the userlist.xml file, which has the same path above.
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
For me, it was a little different. My file names were "X.xml", not the "userX.xml" convention.
One other note: Some apps in the new profile do not run. Most do though. Not sure what's causing that.
Already heard of it, but I've never tried.
Next time I flash JB I'm going to test it.
Thanks for the command line.
Tried it last night but was very disappointed.
All profiles I created could see my google account.
This is not what I want.
The reason for having this option is for me to have real separate accounts so the kids are not buying games on my credit card.
So either I have not understood it or the implementation in 4.1.2 is not fully ready for multi user accounts.
I hope in 4.2 it will be better.
sweet thanks ^_^

[Q] How to change device network name/identifier?

Does anyone know how to change the device network name/identifier on the Nexus 4?
It currently says something like this:
android-33f3820d20717a2c.network.com
But I want to change it to something that conforms to a standard we have at the office.
Thanks in advance!

I looked around and couldn't find anything on this either. Closest thing I could come up with is to make a DHCP reservation for it and assign a name there.
You can set it in build.prop under "net.hostname". You would have to adb pull/push this line to make it persist on reboot.
Trickster MOD has a WYSIWYG interface to set it, not sure if that persist on reboot.
Some authentication processes in professional IT environments (Citrix I know for sure) will use a different field and you won't be able to spoof that.

[Q] Access Regional Carrier Menu

I know with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, you have a regional carrier menu which can be accessed using a key sequence on the dial pad. When accessed, a list will be displayed showing all the carriers which the phone supports using their 3 digit abbreviation. When you select a specific carrier and click reboot, the device will do a factory reset using the specific carrier settings you selected. I know the S4 will have the same regional menu but I'm curious as to whether or not I can access this through a dial pad sequence and if so, what the sequence would be.
Thanks in advance for any help which could be provided!
RESOLVED
Unlike the Note 3, the CSC (Consumer Software Customization) otherwise known as the Regional Carrier menu is a hidden menu within the Samsung Device model lineup. This menu will show a listing of scripts in the phone, depicted by a 3 letter code and specific to the carriers which can be preloaded on your device. If your device is unlocked and you wish to use it with one of the specified carriers, you can insert your carrier specific SIM, access this menu and "INSTALL" the specific configured script for that carrier. The question is always asked... "What is the benefit?".
Answer: With smartphones, they are mini computers and not just your typical "telephone". As such, you have multiple settings which vary among carriers. As such, by configuring your device to be carrier specific, it will modify specific settings which are proprietary to that specific carrier. As an example, it will modify the APN details, update your network settings to reflect access to specific modems such as 3G, 4G, HSPA+ and LTE and will also brand the device with specific apps which have been preloaded and configured for that specific carrier such as a "My Account" app. These are just some of the things to name a few which implementation of the proper CSC settings will provide.
Samsung realized that tech savvy people have figured out how to access these menus and this has resulted in fixes implemented in OTA updates to hinder people from being able to do this. As such, you cannot use the typical dialpad entry to gain access to the menu but do have the ability through ROOTING your device. Unfortunately, a ROOT will most likely "void" your warranty so it's at the discretion of the "end user" whether or not the warranty is important.
Thank you to all who assisted and happy trails!

What has been resolved?.I understand what you were after as in your 1st post; but your 2nd post indicates you can get the dialler menu if you are rooted.
Since I am rooted......care to tell me the code for me to test then?.
It doesnt matter if you cant, as when I insert a sim, a box normally opens up for me to select which network I want, which then triggers inbuilt settings (apn etc)......and the phone works.
Many people do not wish to "root" their device thus "voiding" the warranty. As an alternative, they can unlock their device and dependent on their OS, they can access the "CSC Menu" through *#272*[IMEI]# Should their "new" carrier be in the default list of supporting scripts installed on the phone by the manufacturer, they can install the script which will "brand" the phone to the new carrier/SIM complete with all the required settings for that carrier. Doing this will BRAND their phone to the new carrier settings without having to root and install a carrier specific ROM etc...
Is this beneficial for you specifically? Absolutely not as you have rooted your device but many on here looking for information find threads which talk partially about something and then you see a posts claiming it's been resolved with no further detail. If I solve something on my own and feel it would benefit some, not all, I may as well post my findings so if someone encounters the same problem, they can access a thread which provides a solution instead of simply saying "FIXED".
You said it best by "It doesnt matter if you cant, as when I insert a sim"... Yes, when you insert a SIM on your rooted device you have access to everything you need. That does not help someone whom does not wish to "root" their device. Maybe I'm reading into matters too much but you seem upset about my posts That being said, ignore them. I'm not bolstering my post count but if I resolve something, I may as well post it since I cannot officially delete my thread but only "edit" it. By posting it's resolved and providing details as to how, this will alleviate someone wasting their time by providing an answer while helping those who may possibly encounter the same situation.
Cheers!

No.You state in post 2 that you can acess the menu if I am rooted.....so explain how its done since I am rooted.
Also the box that opens up happens when a sim is inserted on all the unrooted samsung phones Ive had, which then triggers carrier settings etc.
So to recap, you did not answer how to get into that menu, and I cant even see how anyone would need to anyhow.
That is all
You are reading way too much into the post and it's asinine. I asked a question, received some feedback via PM and resolved my issue. As quoted from my "Post #2": "As such, you cannot use the typical dialpad entry to gain access to the menu but do have the ability through ROOTING your device." -- I am simply indicating the dial pad entry cannot be used unless you have original firmware which has not been updated. If updated, you can ROOT which allows you to brand your device using alternative methods. Reading way too much into everything...
ROOTING = You can customize your device using many methods and as per your post: "I cant even see how anyone would need to anyhow" is correct for those who are rooting.
*#272*[IMEI]# = You can customize your device to a specific carrier should that carrier be listed in the pre-installed scripts. Your device must be unlocked but this method will not void your warranty by installing a carrier ROM already pre-configured on the device.
I may also add that you're correct! If unlocking a device and not rooting, once you input a non-carrier SIM, you will be prompted for a code but the settings do not always change. Sometimes APN settings are incorrect and there is manual editing required. The suggestion I made regarding the CSC menu will allow you to configure the device to the new carrier ROM without rooting. This will also "customize" the device to that specific carrier so unlike simply features such as APN etc... being changed, you will also have pre-defined apps installed specific to that carrier such as "My Account" and other specific apps you would not obtain by simply unlocking.
I'll make it clear that you ARE RIGHT! Let's leave it at that but for those who do not read so deep into my posts, I find many of them have been helpful as have yours otherwise we would not have received the thanks we have.
Have a great one!

Enabling Tethering (Internet Sharing) if carrier blocks it

I've tested this with both Cricket and AT&T on my Lumia 1520 and it's working great. I'm assuming it will work with other carriers and phones but would need to be tested. It requires registry editing capabilities. I used the CustomPFD registry editor with it running as the Preview for Developers app. (note: I had to use this method to get registry write access)
Basically you just have to set the following registry keys. For carriers like Cricket that completely blocks tethering you'll need the ICSSVC & system settings but for others like AT&T that allow it but only on certain plans you'll only need the ICSSVC settings.
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Services\ICSSVC\Settings]

"EntitlementRequired"=dword:00000000

Hello! I have a Lumia 630 with WP8.1 Update 1 (latest available from the Previews for Developers). I'm on Crickets network and would love to enable the tether option.
Can you elaborate step by step what I need to do? I have Developer Unlocked my phone already. And I'm assuming I will need to use a computer to export the XAPs?
Thanks
Ok, so I deployed the CustomWPSystem app. I've got as far as trying to patch the target app but no matter which of the target apps I try and patch, the tool crashes to the home screen. However, the target apps still open and function as normal. This makes me think it's not even trying to patch them.
Any ideas?

I've installed the Windows 10 Technical Preview and for some reason I can't unlock the WPSystem folder. When I click Phone after Add Provider in Pocket File Manager I get a black screen. This actually happens anytime I choose Phone as a location in any app. I think it's MS blocking out any possible access to the system files during the beta stages..

nothign for users without an SD card. The insider app is fixed too so you cant do it through any of the fiddler methods too. I think someone is working on a way to bypass that. Lets hope it works or else wait till next month
Just tried this. No dice - the Internet Sharing setting says there's no data connection available to share.
I have an ATIV S Neo that was fully interop unlocked and is running Microsoft dev preview updates since GDR3, and I've updated to the latest 8.1 update available through Preview for Developers.
The SecureItems DWORD value was different (54), and I successfully set it to 176 using SamWP8 Tools. I also changed the EntitlementRequired value from 1 to 0 and rebooted. All other values in the OP were already the same on my phone. What am I missing?

I feel like it might be an APN thing, but what do I know.
If Sprint would let me tether for free, I would do it. I only use it in emergencies - it's not like I'm streaming Netflix in HD on my computer from my phone or anything.

It most likely is an APN things. Something with TetheringNAIConnection, see below from MS web page:
"TetheringNAIConnection
Optional. Specifies the CDMA TetheringNAI Connection Manager cellular connection that internet sharing will use as a public connection.
If a CDMA mobile operator requires using a Tethering NAI during internet sharing, they must configure a TetheringNAI connection and then specify the connection in this node.
Specified connections will be mapped, by policy, to the internet sharing service. All attempts to enumerate Connection Manager connections for the internet sharing service will return only the mapped connections.
Note: The mapping policy will also include the connections specified in the DedicatedConnections as well.
If the specified connections do not exist, internet sharing will not start because it will not have any cellular connections available to share
Additional requirements for CDMA networks:
For CDMA networks that use a separate Network Access Identity (NAI) for internet sharing, the Connections parameter TetheringNAI is used. The following sample demonstrates how to specify the connection"
Sprint & Tethering
I switched to Sprint almost 5 years ago when the HTC Arrive came out. I called up sprint and they said they don't offer tethering for that device. XDA came out with a custom rom that had it so I flashed and was tethering like normal. In December they cut off peer to peer stuff (which is fine with me) Then In February they sent me a nasty letter saying I was tethering and using too much data (on my unlimited data plan) In June they cut me off. So all I can say is Sprint is getting serious about not allowing tethering. Mind you my phone was 3g so..... they just dont like anyone tethering without paying for it.
Worked perfectly on my Lumia 1520 on the H2O network. Only had to change the entitlement reg key.
Didn't work for me on my 830 on Cricket. I can enable the connection settings and connect from my laptop (gets an IP and everything), but I can't connect to anything online (limited network connectivity). Any suggestions?
Nevermind, it was just my Hyper-V client IP settings. Working great now, thanks!

"Enabled"=dword:00000001
"EntitlementRequired"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Settings\{1DEF9B7D-2322-40eb-A007-16A75D5CDA6F}]
@="Soft AP"
"Location"="app://5B04B775-356B-4AA0-AAF8-6491FFEA5629/Default"
"Plugin"="{09c51652-2cbc-49d5-883e-20606f9a47ff}"
"QuickSettingsIconURI"="res://UIXMobileAssets{ScreenResolution}!actioncenter.hotspot.tier25.png"
"QuickSettingsTitle"="@\\windows\\system32\\Settings3Res.dll,-535"
"Title"="@\\windows\\system32\\Settings3Res.dll,-242"
"Type"=dword:00000001
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Settings\{69DAA7D1-09EA-4eae-A67E-56E4B0B4CA5B}\SecureItems]
"{1DEF9B7D-2322-40eb-A007-16A75D5CDA6F}"=dword:000000b0
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Settings\QuickSettingElements]
"{1DEF9B7D-2322-40eb-A007-16A75D5CDA6F}"=dword:00000007
Note: dword:000000b0 is integer 176. Also, if you change sims this will get reset and will need to be redone. I've seen vague references to some of this info but never a good writeup so hopefully this helps other people.

Got it working..... there are extra backslashes in the paths that I had to remove..... the WPTweaker app can do the edits for you but you have to remove the extra backslashes.....
@su8z3ro, you mean these values?
Code:

<value>@\\windows\\system32\\Settings3Res.dll,-535</value>

<value>@\\windows\\system32\\Settings3Res.dll,-242</value>

[UPDATE] just tested this tweak and confirm - you've right. Updated tweak.xml committed to the github.
