You don't need wifi to update to marshmallow. Just sideload ota. And you will be OK.

Do you have custom recovery? Is your system partition completely stock? If you ever had root then you system partition is no completely stock. Its an easy fix. I just downloaded the LP firmware but just flashed the all the system partition files and then did the OTA. No problems. I literally did that about half an hour ago. I had a rooted MPXE on 5.1. I flashed stock recovery and the system partition then took the OTA.

So why does it do an error when I download ota marshmallow while installing and fails?

Because your system partition isn't completely stock. That is why you have to reflash the stock system partition.

TWRP is custom recovery so you do need to flash stock recovery.
On that page click on the button under 5.1.1
Then click on the button under XT1575 Firmware

OK so after I download that I flash it by wiping my phone with custom twrp and putting the file in the backups folder and restoring it? I disregard those fastboot commands you told me? After restoring it and when I boot into the phone. When it tells me to download marshmallow, I install it but when its installing it gives me an error. What do I do from there if that happens?

No you download the firmware and then you do the fastboot commands. The fastboot commands will install stock recovery and the stock system paritition. The OTA won't work with TWRP. You can install TWRP after the OTA. Also if you wan't root make sure you use the systemless root not the regular SuperSU. If you wan't to do that we can discuss it after you do the OTA.

Yeah, just to make things more... confused!
We have Z, Force, Play, single sim, dual sim, Verizon's, unlocked, etc... we *really* need confused codename and product codes to help us on this...
Anyway @motorola they are surely fans of The Griffin's series..... Sheridan is the surname of the series' director...

Keep in mind depending on the region you're flashing you may have a different number of sparse chunks (I think VZW has like 16, where as stock has like 13) You just enter the amount of sparse chunks you need to flash.

:/ Ok; try as I might I cannot seem to get my Moto Z to boot if I have SuperSU installed. My bootloader is unlocked, and I've been able to flash different ROMS with no problem. But if I try to install SuperSU (v2.78-SR1) to a working ROM, or install JanJan's pre-rooted US ROM, then Android simply never boots. I just downloaded the three more recent versions of SuperSU to give them a try, but does anyone have any suggestions of what I might be doing wrong here?

Flashed wrong Rom

Hi, i have a Moto x Play XT1562, and i was trying to flash a stock rom and i accidentally flashed a wrong rom on it (moto g3 stock rom). I only realised it when i reached the sparsechunk 8 file. I then tried to flash the actual moto x play stock rom but am unable to do so since. Everytime i try to flash any of the files of the rom i get the following error.
(bootloader) preflash validation failed
What should i do?
Any assistance would be of great help.
Is bootloader locked ??

What was your last stock rom? 5.1, 6.x, 7.0?
I am suspecting a radio version issue here... try flashing the latest factory image via fastboot for your variant and boot fully. Do not use images from Moto, get the latest ones from https://firmware.center/firmware/Motorola/
After that, only use TWRP 3.1.1-0, then wipe system, data, caches, then flash ROM only and boot, if successful, flash Gapps and/or SuperSU (if recommended by dev of ROM) and test boot again.
If the very first boot fails, I would want to see the output of a "fastboot getvar all" and the recovery logs of the ROM flashes after you have tried the factory image flash.

There isn't flashable working custom rom at stock nougat.

Unroot it and use magisk v13(magisk hide &/or core only u need).
Work : fastboot oem lock begin

fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin

fastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn

For 6.0.1 xt1572 should be more:
...
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.10
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.11
...
fastboot flash bluetooth BTFM.bin
...
I'm having the same problem. I had updated to stock 7.0 and now I just can't update to any other 7.x roms, but 6.x roms do work

[Getting Error while installing OTA]

I received an update Oreo, when I tried to install it failed and displayed a message "Error" and restarted. Help me to update my mobile to latest version. I cleared cache partition, still no luck.
I have unlocked bootloader and on latest stock ROM.
Screenshot attached !!!

Flash the complete stock rom using fastboot and lock the bootloader and then update the device through OTA.

Facing the exact same issue here.I think the latest stock oreo needs locked bootloader to flash
No need to relock the bootloader, but you must revert back to unmodified stock firmware on your device before updating. Without seeing what error it is, it's difficult to say. A locked bootloader strictly enforces having the unmodified stock furnace, which is why an OTA update is more likely to work.
Try this:
1) download the NPJS25.93-14-18 firmware from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/how-to/stock-rom-npjs25-93-14-4-march-1-t3608138
Only use this if you have not updated to Oreo and you are still on NPJS25.93-14-18.
2)unzip the fastboot ROM, delete any old stock ROMs from your ADB folder and copy the stock ROM over.
3) assuming you had NPJS25.93-14-18 already on your device, flash the firmware with the following instructions - no need for the GPT/bootloader. Ensure you have your data backed up, as you may have to factory reset if you encounter instability.
Code:
fastboot flash logo logo.bin
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash dsp adspso.bin
fastboot flash oem oem.img
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.0
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.1
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.2
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.3
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.4
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.5
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.6
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.7
fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
fastboot erase modemst1
fastboot erase modemst2
fastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot
That should get your device into an OTA friendly state without erasing your data. If that doesn't work, I suggest waiting for the Oreo fastboot ROM.
I've custom Oreo installed on my phone. Which firmware package should I install?

At the moment, we only have the stock Nougat firmware to revert to - Oreo firmware doesn't seem to be out yet. However, flashing stock Nougat over custom Oreo may appear to come with some risk of losing IMEI, so be careful. You could try the TWRP flashables, be aware the stock ROM is only 32 bit.

What is best way to update Security Patches on rooted / Unlocked G7?

What is the safest way to apply the newest updates? I am still on April, been afraid to do anything without asking first.
Is there a simple way, and will I still be able to unlock/root again?
Same question. Accent being on 'safe'.

Either flash a custom rom that's been updated with the latest security patch
Or flash an official stock firmware but remember the chances of it being the latest security patch is slim
Obviously if your device is not bootloader unlocked you can't flash custom roms - you can flash official stock firmware via fastboot but I wouldn't bother as you will already be on the latest available firmware so just wait for the next ota update to arrive

See this thread ...
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g7/help/ota-rooted-phone-t3956012
I copied out the important parts..
1. Download the latest firmware.
2. Install adb & fastboot
3. Flash with these commands:
Code:
fastboot getvar max-sparse-size
fastboot oem fb_mode_set
fastboot flash partition gpt.bin
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.img
fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
fastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn
fastboot erase modemst1
fastboot erase modemst2
fastboot flash dsp adspso.bin
fastboot flash dtbo dtbo.img
fastboot flash logo logo.bin
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.0
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.1
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.2
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.3
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.4
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.5
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.6
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.7
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.8
fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.9
fastboot flash system_b system_b.img_sparsechunk.0
fastboot flash system_b system_b.img_sparsechunk.1
fastboot flash system_b system_b.img_sparsechunk.2
fastboot flash vendor vendor.img_sparsechunk.0
fastboot flash vendor vendor.img_sparsechunk.1
fastboot flash vendor vendor.img_sparsechunk.2
fastboot flash oem oem.img
fastboot flash oem_b oem_other.img
DO NOT RUN THIS ONE ---- fastboot erase userdata
fastboot erase DDR
fastboot oem fb_mode_clear
you will then need to patch boot with magisk again.

The latest for the xt1962-1 retail is the August security patch. That's pretty good considering Lenovomoto.
I hit the notice for the June 1, 2019. Failed to install. Tried using the Lenovo Moto Smart Assistant and it bricked my phone. Now have to wait on Motorola to send a replacement. Very frustrated right now. WTF an OTA failed and the LMSA bricked the phone. SMH...
Don't try to apply the updates or LSMA without locking the bootloader (again) first. Afterwards unlock and reroot using same method as before. I'm sure there will be plenty of full wipes so back up accordingly.

Locking the bootloader is not a cinch either.
Makes you wonder if the safest course might not be to just ignore the updates and stay with the android version you have.
Which is more dangerous, staying with the 'not-updated' working phone or trying to update and risking a bricked phone?

From my understanding, you need a signed/original boot.img that of which if you didn't make a backup of yours before rooting, than the LSMA can help. I'm thinking removing Magisk and full factory resetting will be necessary as well.
As for obtaining a copy of a signed/official boot.img

Head on over to https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds101291 and download the tool, after installed put your phone in bootloader/fastboot mode and go through the rescue steps up until the firmware is downloaded, do not click rescue after the firmware is fully downloaded just head on over to C:\ProgramData\LMSA\Download\RomFiles and open the downloaded firmware and take the boot image from there and copy it to your fastboot tools folder and flash that boot.img check that the firmware matches the version installed on your phone before flashing the boot.img.

The trick is to run `fastboot oem lock` 3x (not 2x) before flashing boot.img, and then run `fastboot oem lock` one last time after this is done.

I can't give you a definite answer, but the way I perceive this is;
Should I keep a version of my OS that does not have the most recent security updates but has been rooted?

Phone was locked and not rooted. It's now FUBAR and Moto is sending me a replacement.
