file manager for wp10 - Microsoft Lumia 950/950 XL

hi, I'm coming from android and got an issue with the default file manager for wm10. I'm searching for a file manager wich can be quick, easy to use and can create/extract zip files (or better zip and rar). I don't care if is it free or i have to pay but i want a functional app.
for example i loved android's es file explorer and solid explorer. is there something like it for wp10? i don't want an app full of ads if possibile

There's nothing nearly on the same level as Solid Explorer or ES File Explorer.
What's best on W10M really depends on what you need though. Yuki Explorer is a decent one though, and it has a free, full-featured version with no ads. It also has the benefit of SMB share support, and working with Continuum.

I'm looking for a decent file manager wich can manages zips and rars, no matter if is free or not, just i hate ads for now thanks for your suggestion, i'll try it

perhaps you should try total commander.

Metro file manager seems to be the best one I've come across so far. It can handle zips and synchronize with the cloud based file storage like Google Drive, One Drive, etc., hide files, and some more that I'm still not aware of maybe. It can handle ftp transfers like in ES and Solid after you pay for the complete package ($2 or $3, I think), which also takes away the ads. And I just found out that it has tabbed viewing

good advice! that's what i was searching for, even if was a really hard decision with yuki file explorer. Anyway due to interface language i preferred metro. Thanks

Metro File Manager eX is superb for me. With FTP sharing feature I'm rarely plug my phone to computer. Also, it supports samba network drives and have build in picture viewer, video/audio players.

Total Commander, Aerize Explorer (Pro), Pocket File Manager...

I use Total Commander and Metro File Manger. Both apps can read files from Samba shares.
But how can I play MKV/x264 from share? AVI files are working with WM10 standard video Player over Network, MKV not.
Q1: Does anyone have a MKV player which can read from SMB share?
Q2: How can I change default program / file association to open MKV in TC with VLC or Smart Player?

not sure for SMB share, but try CCPlayer for MKV files.

Metro File Manager is one of the (many) things I find superior on WP.
- Access to cloud services
-Great interface
I don't know how (and don't need at this point) to root WP10, but root access is one big drawback compared to Android file managers.

What do you think of inbuilt WM5 Utilities?

Hello
Am I the only one who has problems with the inbuilt Microsoft Crap, in particular File Explorer. When ever I use it, for example trying to open the Windows Directory, the 'Please Wait Circle' goes around and around for minutes, or it simply crashes the system needing a Soft Reboot.
However, Resco Explorer opens straight away, Gsfinder+ again opens straight away.
Windows Menu System, so slow, install Wisbar Advance and it fires up straight away. Why can't Microsoft ever get anything to work properly, yet third party developers really boost the system?
Is there any way to strip down WM5 so releasing Memory and just use third party software?
Well, you are not the only one. Not that that is much comfort.
Here is another story for you:
Transfer 5MB directory with file explorer over WIFI (from shared folder on PC) - 1min 30sec.
Same directory with Total Commander - 25sec.
And of course there are little things, like file extensions or opening files directly from shared folders on PC.
Unfortunately, you can't get rid of the built in crap because it is part of ROM. So there is no memory to be reclaimed (unless you are good at cooking your own ROMs and can substitute programs directly there).
Personally I use:
TCPMP / WinamPaq instead of WMP
Total Commander instead of File explorer.
I use TCPMP like you as it appears to play just about everything, but have you noticed that if you tap on an AVI up comes Media Player by default to tell you that it does not support the file.
Microsoft even say on http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/windowsmobile/faq.aspx#5_1
"5.3 Why can't I play a file that I copied to my device?
You are trying to play a file format that Windows Media Player 10 Mobile does not support (such as files with the extensions .avi, .divx, .m4a, .mpeg, .mpg, .ms-dvr, .ram, .wav, or .xvid)"
I thought this might be due to the supported Codecs
Microsoft MPEG-4 codec version 2.0 and 3.0.
ISO MPEG-4 video codec version 1.0.
But they appear to use the extension MP4
So if Media Player does not play AVI, why is it associated with Media Player?
It's because MS is BEEP BEEEEEEEEP BEEP.
But seriously, in TCPMP go to:
Options->Settings->Select page->File association
select all the file types you want associated with TCPMP and click OK.
This should solve the problem, and you will even see TCPMP icon next to the file names in explorer.

ASTRO file explorer smb client

hey guys i tried today to access my shares on my pcs.
1) Windows XP
2) WINDOWS 7
the astro file explorer explores the XP shares perfectly but not the windows 7...it cannot connect to the server
i tried estrongs explorer and it worked on both but does anyone know why it didn't with astro ????
in addition how can i make the ROCKPLAYER as a choice when they ask for a program to open the files (like open with) so i can play avi files from shared folders
EDIT::::
no one use astro for windows shares ??????
THE MOST important i want is the way to open avi files with the program of my choice....how can i add rockplayer as an option to menus ?????
anyone ???????
I use it but all my shares are in linux machines.Might be worth trying to set up your shares again and checking permissions win 7 is far more secure than xp
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
i dunno what the problem is with astro.......with estrongs explorer everything works awsomely.......and it found them by itself.
I'd be really interested to know how to make rockplayer or yxplayer the default player for .avi too...this way we can stream divx directly from shares but I can't find any hint...
i'm trying to do the same thing.
for some reason my Galaxy S won't play them with the native video app even though they are supported file types. i tried playing a feature film on xvid which started and froze after 5 seconds and crashed the phone. after restarting, all xvids report "invalid file type" now including the one which partially worked before.
Can't make it work in either Astro or Estrong file managers.
Any suggestions?
i don't completely understand this, but there appears to be a solution here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=733490
^oh cool! good info!

much better then non native smb through astro ... !

Getting smb to work?

it didn't work for me on 2.1, figured 2.2 would fix it. nope.
it sees my homegroup and my computer but then it just says folder empty when i open it.
ive set many folders and files to be shared to "everyone" homegroup and directly to the device and it still never sees them.
im running windows 7
Try using es file explorer, that ussualy does the trick.
Does not work for the build in video and music app, but it's a workaround to get descent file sharing till Archos fixes the smb issue.
I used es explorer to navigate to an SMB via IP and since then it has shown up in the Archos file explorer (sometimes it requires a refresh).
I had a ton of trouble getting my 101 to see shares on my Win7 machine. I have since moved all of my shared data to my Ubuntu machine and I'm able to see everything, every time through any app on the 101 (files, video, etc).
I've not found Win7 to share very nicely with anything that's not M$. Just my personal experience.
I'm on firmware 2.0.54 / Android 2.2 Update 1 and what is working for me is:
Maintenance of existing SMB Information: Settings -> Wireless & Network -> Shared Folders Setting" This provides a list of known SMB entries and their security information (e.g. username and password).
Creating: While I know some people used the EStrong ES File Explorer, I have been using the "Files" application that came with the tablet to locate the SMB entry. Once I create it, I maintain it as I mention above.
As for the EStrong ES File Explorer, I've been using it for local files, but after reading the entries in this thread will look at using it for LAN, also.
Bert Moshier
es was at least able to connect. it still didnt see all my files though for some reason. and it couldnt play any. a basic avi file it would fail on and with mkvs it would say not supported file type
Tried the Menu and Refresh in Files?
Also mkv is working but you might have AC3 sound in there and that's not supported without an additional plugin.
I also have this problem. Can see and browse all (Windows) SMB shares using ES File Explorer. Archos Files app can't find any SMB servers...
ES File Explorer can't stream video from the shares :s Can the Files app do that? (I can't remember if that worked before Froyo...)
Using Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. SMB streaming works perfectly to my HTPC (running XBMC) and my TViX box.
Same form me.
With Androod 2.1:
SMB (from XP and Linux) worked with the standard explorer. Streaming works.
ES Explorer not tested.
With Android 2.2:
Shares on XP no longer listed in the standard explorer.
Shares from a Linux based device (Dreambox) are still listed. Streaming works.
Using ES Explorer, XP shares can be accessed, but streaming does not work with ES Explorer.

I seem to have read somewhere that sharing drive root doesn't work. That's the way I traditionally share my internal files.
I set up a few sub directory shares \Video, \Photos, etc, refreshed and after authenticating, can see and stream using built in files app. couldn't before with this machine.
using XP Pro as server. works in video program, too.
A101IT-V6 - 2.2.1 - gApps, z4
AH HA!!!!
the video program is one of those that goes in and resets max CPU to 800 when running setcpu...
!!
So frustrating, largely because this was a key feature that attracted me to the Archos, and because it worked SO WELL before the "update."
I can browse the shared folders of my Windows Home Server or Win7 desktop just fine with ES, and in the Archos File explorer I can see the machine names in the workgroup, but clicking the machine name gives me "folder is empty" every time. even after browsing the shares with ES, the Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Shared Folder Settings is blank - I've never seen a profile there.
Anybody have any suggestions?
I got tired of futzing with smb and just switched to upnp, which seems to work perfectly on 2.2.1 on my A70. And I have the added bonus of being able to stream any format, since the renderer I'm using is PS3 Media Server (similar to TVersity). It also supports subtitles
see for me it's the opposite. well- I tried smb first, but it wasn't working/ so i tried upnp, and it
can't list folder content" so i screwed with smb and got it working great.
i had to turn off password protected sharing, with all other sharing options on (except streaming)
and in local security settings i allowed it to use blank passwords , not just on local machines.
and last i had to set the permissions of the drive to allow everyone read access(i gave full control)...
now it works great, streams all my vids. can't transcode obviously but that's alrite. haven't needed to yet.
I've gave up on SMB until next firmware update.
I'm using UPNP for video/audio sharing now.
I've tried xbms but couldn't browse files on A70, than I've tried Wild Media Server (UPnP, DLNA, HTTP), couldn't transcode all my media files... than I've tried ps3 and bunch other upnp media servers and almost gave up on that too
than i've tried windows media center, than added using media player my files... started sharing... and now i'm able to browse folders and see all my files (media)
I'm waiting on SMB
Also, cajl posted on his forum some news on new firmware. NTFS 1.5TB drive attached to his A70, announced ext3 support, overall performance improve, bluetooth gps support natively...

New firmware came out today. I hope it works. I'm waiting for my replacement A70 to show Monday so I can try it out.
It works.
Latest firmware fixed my problems Now I can access my protected shares and it remembers the username/password.
Streaming SD-video works great over my wireless (802.11n) network. 720p h.264 AC3 videos *almost* works, but it sometimes stutters a bit... Also, subtitles work.
I had the same problem andthe solution was that I had to create a password user on windows 7,did not have password before.

i can tell smb is at least working.
but it wont let me login with the update still.
i have my homegroup settings in win 7 set to turn off password protected sharing
also in upnp some of my files that are fine still say file is damaged or incomplete
I've managed to access SMB on vmware machine (XP), W7 is not working for me.
I see my W7 machine using files app, enter user/pass.... and nothing
XP machine was easy to access, but... I couldn't access shares on XP laptop
UPNP works

ES File Explorer

I had an old tablet that I would use ES File Explorer on and be able to connect to my home network. When I went to open anything from it, I'd get a menu pop up asking me what program I wanted to use to open the file up. My old tablet was underpowered though and couldn't really stream anything because of it.
I now have a Nook Color and I'm running CM7 on it. I've downloaded ES File Explorer, setup network access and I'm able to access my files. However, every time I try to access a file through my network, it tries opening up the file in ES File Explorer. I don't get any popup menu asking me what program I'd like to use. ES File Explorer won't let me stream any video files and I have several other programs installed and would like to try to stream through them.
Can anyone help me out here? What am I missing that would allow me to choose what program a file will run through?
Thank you!
I had the same issue awhile back. Just went back after reading your post and its no different. Since then I've been using TVersity to stream my video.
You can try to clear default action for es file explorer in the application manager under settings (sorry, my nook is in french, i haven't the real translation of menu names..)
I've been looking for a good program. I might try buying plex as it's on sale at amazon this week. But honestly, I can't give you any other advice. If i end up getting it, I'll let you know.
EDIT: Just read in it's description, not optimized for tablets or larger screen. So that's not going to work for us. Sorry.

Did it work and allow you to select a new default player? It didnt work for me
Edit: I tried deleting and re installing. It allowed me to select a new default player for local files only. Still cant select new video player for network files.
Thanks for the reply guys. I couldn't get it to work either, so I ended up just installing cifsmanager and mounting my file server. I still then have to use a different file browser to select what video player I'm goig to use, but that's not much of a big deal.
I haven't been streaming anything, but I was using ES for quite a while, and ended up trading it in for File Expert, which is a bit more polished and doesn't give me the issues ES did. I just tried, and wasn't able to stream media with Moboplayer, but File Expert did give me the option to choose an app, so maybe it would work with a different video player.
It was a little odd how it worked: navigate to video file, tap, and it prompts me to choose a web browser (?); once the browser opens, however, I get a new prompt to choose a media player. Like I said, Moboplayer failed to play the files (tried .avi and mp4), but you said you had other players that might work.

Rockplayer Lite should play those files.

You are correct, thanks I would recommend File Expert over ES in general, and it looks like it would also solve your problem, though I see you took other steps already.

TIP: Browse and copy FireTVs filesystem from your computer using FX File Explorer

I have been struggling with an efficient way to copy items to and from my FireTV. Primarily backing up the entire KODI app data folder to push to another FireTV (I like to keep them in sync this way). Previously I would use ES on the TV to copy the folder to a network location, but that always took forever to move a gig. I thought the FX web server feature might work better, and the copy is MUCH easier and MUCH faster.
I have google play services installed on this unrooted FireTV, don't know if that is required or not...
Steps:
1. Have FX and the FX+ key app installed on your device. (I absolutely love FX and have used it since it was in beta, the plus is worth the fee!)
2. Sideload both apps to your TV using Easy Fire Tools or equivalent.
3. Open FX and click File Sharing to start the web server.
a. FX doesn't work with the remote, so you need that Mouse toggle app on your TV, Vysor on the computer to click via screen share, a BT mouse attached, or some other wireless mouse remote app)
4. Type the address of the webserver into your browser on the same network, then get to it!
EDIT: In your web browser on the left drop down menu of the FX web web interface, you can enable "View Hidden Files" to navigate the Android/data folder.
One of FX File Explorer's great features. I think MixPlorer also offers this.
WebSharing Lite might also do the trick, same company that dev's FX: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.websharing&hl=en
However it has not been updated since 2014 so I'm not sure how the transfer speeds are. The pro version of that app will let you mount the FireTV storage as a drive in windows. I want to play with that feature because that would be most convenient.

Thanks for the tip on this app! MiXplorer works great with the FTV remote, and the FTP server feature lets windows mount the FTV as a network location. Speeds are kinda slow, but perhaps a real FTP client will improve that. WebDAV access works great too.
I have been using ES File Explorer (as FTP server) on FTV stick V2 with Filezilla as ftp client on windows side.
transfers have been acceptably fast for me. Doing as you suggested, coping a configured stick to windows
and then restoring to another stick over ftp.

Glad the app tip helped. Looks like MiXplorer even works over ethernet compared to FX File Explorer expecting a wi-fi connection.
