Messager vs Hangouts - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am curious what other Nexus 6p owners are doing with the default Messenger app verses Hangouts to send SMS. On my Note 4 I was using Hangouts. But I read that Google is going to be removing SMS handling from Hangouts. (link) So I am a bit inclined to not use Hangouts anymore for SMS, and just use the two applications separately. I like Hangouts. I redirect no answer calls to my GV number for voicemail, which appears in Hangouts nicely. I'll probably use it for SMS as long as I can, but was willing to try out the stock Messenger application. What does everyone else do for SMS, voice mail, etc?

Stock. Used to use QKSMS or Textra but switched to Evolve SMS all when on my Note 4.
Since switching to Nexus I just use stock. Does the job and looks good.

I use Textra for some time now and really like it.

Same. I was a Textra user on everything pre 6P but have switched to Messenger post 6P.

I currently using Textra. I was rocking stock for a while but I hate the way quick reply takes the whole screen. It's so unnecessary and annoying. I wish they would change it

i was using hangouts for a while since it started handling SMS...and really liked it BUT
once Messenger came out i switched. I wish hangouts looked/worked at smooth as messenger.... maybe in a future update in which it gets better i will....

I use messenger over hangouts for the quick reply feature. I also don't like how it takes up the whole screen, but it's better than not having it at all. I miss the old feature from PA (hover) that let you open any notification in a floating window

i'm using stock messenger as well. Never did try it with Hangouts, I just didn't feel the need

I use hangouts because:
- Chat/IM/Text/Call in one app is convenient
- I can do all the above on any device without pulling out my phone
I'll be bummed if I have to resort to a separate text app.

Wow, I am surprised so many people don't use Hangouts for SMS. I guess it was pretty buggy at first. Hmmm. I will look into Textra. But probably will try out Messenger for a while at least.

i did use hangouts, ever since they merged it, but yesterday got the 6p, thought i would give messager a go, and i found i do like how well it works.

I use to like hangouts because I liked how they integrated a lot of things and the UI looks nice. I text a lot and when I tried to delete 2000-3000 texts (group text chat) it would take forever, freeze, or never delete them at all. So now i'm using the google messenger and i'm happy with that.

I only use Hangouts! I'll beleave it when I officially see Google remove SMS from Hangouts.

Personally I'm using YAATA as my sms app. You can find it on XDA / google it. Pretty smooth app.

Is Google voice merged into messenger now?

I use Messenger because of the colorful material look and different colors per contact. It looks nice paired with Flat Style Keyboard. I also wouldn't be able to go without quick reply.

Can't see pics with chompSMS?

Does anyone know how to fix this? I have to switch to stock messenger to see the pic and then when I go back to chomp it will then show.

Try handcent SMS. I've had problems with chomp in the past and always came back to handcent. The devs are really good about fixing any issues.

Try Textra...it's made by the same people, and it's fast, fluid, and completely replaced my stock messaging app (I can freeze the stock app with no issues). I've had no issues with MMS in it, like I have with most other 3rd party SMS apps.
+1 for textra I use it as my daily SMS app. I was having problems with other 3rd party SMS apps I would take a picture but it would only send sideways it was stupid with textra it doesn't do that and its light so it makes it fast.

OK, so I'm trying out textra and have made it my default SMS. I'm not receiving notifications or the pop up. I'm getting them in the stock messaging though. Am I doing something wrong? Help is appreciated. Thanks.

It's a common problem w chomp i fixed it like so...begin by whining your application cache for chomp and stock messenger. ..
Go to your mobile settings and copy the mms settings or whatever...then input those to the chomp app...i also had to enable in the stock messenger "auto retrieve mms"....then in chomp disable that feature that says something like b preserve resolution"... Once all is done reboot and have someone send you a pic. It should work. Give it a few hours i knew mine wouldn't work right away but now it's golden.
No Textra Notification
This happened to me as well. I found that if I have any additional third party SMS apps besides Textra installed, then Textra will not notify me of a new message. Also check your stock messaging app and make sure notifications are turned off there as well.

Lucky you, I've never gotten Sliding Messaging to fully work with MMS, no matter what combination of settings I've tried. It's the reason I jumped ship to Textra (although to be honest I've been using Hangouts for my SMS lately...the only features I'm really missing are the pop-up replies and dark theme).

It works ok for me but force closes when I send MMS, on a Galaxy Note 3 on 4.3
If anyone has a workaround for the crash please share
They did a lousy job with this new version. There should be a clear distinction between Hangouts and SMS/MMS messaging, and there isn't. They have them all in a gigantic list.
Having a tiny little label for SMS is a terrible way to do this.

Hangouts V2 works great on my Note 2 running Pac-man 4.3.1. MMS works no FC's only thing is does it only send SMS to a contact that has hangouts installed too? My understanding was it would send to both sorta like iMessage?
works nice on nexus 4, only wish it had an option to customize colors of incoming and outgoing messages
I agree with many people, the Hangouts / SMS integration is a let down Many of us thought it would be similar to the iMessage integration and that was exciting.. Also, let's hope it's faster on the N5 than on my N4. It takes quite awhile to open.. :silly: Google has a long way to go with this app, but let's just hope it gets better soon Enjoying the new SMS UI anyway haha :highfive:

No, basically it's just a merge of the SMS / Hangouts app. There are 2 separate conversation lists for your SMS and your Hangout messages =\
I don't believe so. Anything over data / WiFi would just be a Hangouts message.
Works fine on Sprint HTC One...however, it doesnt notify me of messages. No sound, no vibrate, no notification icon........which kind of defeats the purpose of the app since it disables the stock messengers notifications.

A better text messaging app?

What is a good ad free text messaging app? I used to run MIUI and LOVE their texting ap. But MIUI isn't working right for me now so switched to CM11. And while I like it the lack of a good text messenger sucks.
I send lots of MMS messages because of work, and I have 3 different gmail accounts logged in on my phone, and while hangouts is boarderline ok, the fact that I get sign in issues because of the two accounts I don't use hangouts with and then the fact that I have to select what account to send the mms over, it's just a pain, and not nearly as smooth as I think it should be, or that it was.
I have tried and tried to find the APK for the MIUI texting ap so I could just install that, but I just can't find it.
Please help me find a suitable replacement. I don't mind paying the few bucks for it, but it has to be worth it without being all bloat ware, I don't care if it has 9999 different emoticons. I just want to be able to text and send good resolution MMS.
Thanks,
PS, being able to schedule text messages would be awesome too.

My favourite SMS app so far, offers quick reply popup settings as well plus themes are amazing.
Also allows sliding between conversations and a nice pull out list of convos.

If you're a Uber-texter,
Sliding Messsaging Pro:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.klinker.android.messaging_donate
Evolve is okay, But it's essentially a pared down version of Sliding Messagin Pro (even made by the same people)--except for the funky UI. It looks nice, but it's wonky to use:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.klinker.android.evolve_sms
Handcent is another beloved SMS app…It's been around for eons and is a favorite around here. It's got every feature a bacon-loving man could ever want…but it's butt ugly:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.handcent.nextsms
Go SMS Pro -- Essentially on par with handcent. But it has a downside. Even though it's one of the most customizable of the bunch….it takes hours to configure, and even then, just like GO Keyboard, it loves to place big buttons in places you don't want them, and it hides obscure details and features deep within the config and settings….which means that you'll find random numbers and other metadata in your inbox, not really understand what they mean, and then you'll spend the next 20-30 mins trying to figure out how to get rid of them. While this is probably the most-heavily-themed of the bunch, the themes are almost universally garbage. They're unpolished-- the whole lot of them. It's nearly impossible to find a theme that actually skins/themes absolutely everything. Dev's choice of colors, graphics, design is questionable at best. Lastly, the GO Dev team's relentless drive towards integration means that any day now, your app will update and you'll suddenly find out that your SMS app is now your dialer, your lock screen, your camera app, and your flashlight app. Oh…and they'll want you to pay for the "prime" version of every one of those apps-- with GETJAR Gold.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jb.gosms
Other options:
Hangouts now integrates SMS into your Hangouts inbox.
ATT Messaging App-- will integrate voicemail, SMS, MMS, and a few other things like account notifications into a single box for you…which is really, really nice…but the app is also really, really ugly.
There are also apps like SMS Popup which will give you the chance to respond to an incoming message via a notification action or popup.
Lastly, you can just find a AOSP SMS app, configure it, and then theme it with XPosed's XTheme.
Good luck.
Textra

What's your favorite text app, and why? I'm in need of something new, Samsung's app is fine, but I'm bored of it. By the time Google Allo has SMS support, it'll be completely dead.
And go!
I like the stock but wen i get bored with that i use verizon messages since it is customizable and i can set colors and tones for each person instead of one theme like stock. But i like that you can change the tones for each person in the stock app tho

I was using Verizon Messages mainly because I work in a factory, and put my phone in Airplane mode with wifi on, and I could still text with it. But now that you can text over wifi with verizon, and call over wifi, I use the stock Samsung app, works really well, and like the nice touches in this beta.
Textra...receive and reply works over lock screen, must have feature for me.

Textra hands down. Use it for a couple weeks and you will find yourself disappointed going back to samsung messenger. Fully customize look, non annoying delivery receipts sms/mms, and tons of other features.

Samsung Messages or Google Messages

Just got my S10+ this week, and have been busy playing with settings, etc..I'm coming over from the Note 8 (AT&T).
Question for everyone. Do you prefer the built in Samsung Messages app, or Google Messages. I like both, especially now with the dark them more readily available.
What makes me lean more towards Google Messages is the ability to get messages on the web/browser. Was using it all the time on the Note 8.
Wanted to ask if anybody has switched back/forth between the two messaging apps, and if they have encountered any issues? I had switched from Google Messages back to Samsung's message app on the Note 8, and my messages were being sent to the wrong person. That's not a good situation to be in. I ended up switching back because of that.
Also, I noticed there is an updated apk for Samsung messages. My S10+ is using v 10.0.10.111. Looks like they are up to v 10.0.20.37. Anybody install that apk? Any good/bad things in there?
TIA
Coming from an S7 edge i was forced off Google Messages due to the handling of group messages. Sometimes it would work but other times texts that belonged in a group would come in separately. I would then have to click to download the text before it popped back into the group. Other times those texts would show up as expired (even though i just received them) and i would never see what it was. Needless to say i couldn't use it anymore so i ended up using Samsung Messages which never has that issue. Now that i'm on S10+ i'm tempted to try Google Messages again in hopes that it works the way is should as i do prefer it over Samsung Messages just due to the look and of course the web messages.
I've been flip-flopping between: Textra, Google Messages, and Samsung messages.......I've decided to stick with Google Messages.
The Samsung app, feels dated.... I do like the notifications I get when sending to other (At&t) users using the Samsung messaging app (tells when read, or they're replying...ect...), but I only have 1 person out of my 200+ contacts that it's worked on (my 17yr old son, who hates the Samsung messaging app). Plus, it just feels dated. No swipe to delete and long messages require you to "read more".
Textra is the lightest of the bunch, and I've been using for the past 4 or 5 years..... It's also the most customizable. But, Google has upped their game on the last release and incremental updates. It just feels "native" to the phone now. I also like the fact when you receive a PIN number, it recognizes this and copies just the PIN for you.
Google Messages gets my vote
BTW: No issues with group messages for me on the Google Message app
I like the Google messages app very much, but since the update to OneUI I have been using the Samsung version as it's good enough and themes the same way as the other Samsung stock apps, which I like a lot.
I prefer Truecaller messages because of its spam feature..
I love Google messages over Samsung. It worked perfect when i was with ATT. Now that i'm with Verizon I've had issues with google messages. They would come through late or not come at all. Switching to Samsung messages seemed to clear this issue up, as far as i know. No one has said they texted me and i didn't reply. Although that doesn't mean its working correctly, i may not have been aware of missing texts.. Anyone else had any issues with Verizon? i read somewhere a while back that Verizon text messages only worked right when using Verizon messages app. Not sure why that is... Or if it's true. If anyone can shed any light on whether there is, or is not an issue with Verizon messaging if not using Verizon app.

I prefer Android Messages over the stock one.
I love google messages but 2 minor things why I don’t use it on my s10 .
1. Wish google messages had schedule send sms feature . I use that quite a bit . No where in google messenger can I find this option .
2. The notification doesn’t have a pop up view bubble, quick read notification come on the top of the screen when I receive text . Couldn’t find a way to get google messages to do that like stock app notification does .
If there is a fix for both I’d switch back to google messages.

I prefer Samsung over Google mainly because of the ability to pin conversation and star message, the pop up bubble.
If Samsung had scheduler that would be awesome.
There's Qsms which is quite good but I don't want additional apps installed when Samsung messages works atm .
I use Samsung messages at the moment. But the one thing I really miss from Google messages is swipe to archive conversations...I liked to be able to hide conversations I don't use a lot without having to delete them.
